One of our favorite wine suppliers is Veritas.
Founder Paul Antonelli, has not only built a
great portfolio but also has been a strong supporter
over the years of both the
Detroit International Wine Auctions and
A Night for Sight wine auctions,
both terrific fundraisers for their causes.
I'll never forget, in our salad years,
working back stage at Lovett Hall with Paul for an early DIWA.
This sale began 21 years ago thanks to the
encouragement of Spanish wine supplier Jorge Ordonez.
As Veritas' Iberian wine portfolio grew, the
January special offer program began to include wines of ace
Wines of Portugal importer Bartholomew Broadbent and other
Iberian wine importer specialists as well as Ordonez's selections.
Unfortunately, while we're presented with a larger and larger
list of wines each year, all discounted, notice keeps coming
later and the order deadline sooner.
We've learned to cherry pick the list with increasing
scrutiny so as not to impinge on our customers' attention span.
Here, then, in our 2025 version, are
34 of the BEST OF THE BEST selections.
We think you'll prefer our Iberian Express to the
weatherman's Siberian Express!

s0120-35. VINHO VERDE, BROADBENT 91/100
Broadbent's non vintage table wine propensities make for a bit of a selling issue, although I can usually judge their relative freshness from tasting and relate same in my notes. And this one, likely 2023, is plenty fresh enough, as well as a pleasing value. Yes, ideal combo of plumpness and acidity. Flavor interest suggestive of at least some of the superior varieties in the cuvee. Consistent. 91/100.

s0120-36. 20 DOURO, BROADBENT 91+/100
Tinta roriz, tinta barocca, touriga franca, touriga nacional; aged in vats. Fresh and sweet, led by roriz. Abundant too. Again, sweet fruited, Douro warm. There's a light measure of tannin grip in back. Well textured, balanced, priced. Broadbent knows Portugal. 91+/100.

s0120-37. 19 DOURO ESTEVA,. CASA FERREIRINHA 92+/100
Powerful; almost port like. Great extract. Seems some barrel influence. Did I get the price right? Checked the price book; yes, I did. Yeah, quite the whopper of a Douro for the price. Dry Ferreira style. Needs food. 92+/100.

s0120-38. 22 DOURO PAPA FIGAS TINTO, CASA FERREIRINHA 92/100
Dark maroon. Encouraging. Sweet, red-black fruit aroma. Large presence. Inviting, with further encouragement. Plum and elderberry ruby port like flavors without the sweetness and power. Well balanced, well textured, flavorful. I'll be stocking. 92/100.

s0120-39. 21 DOURO VINHA GRANDE, CASA FERREIRINHA 92+/100
Like appearance. The freshness of the 2021 vintage. And the fruit style and intensity of the Papa Figas. Here though barrel aging adds a special measure of complexity. Another winner. Dryer for the barrel time and wood tannin. Needs some cellaring. Worth stocking too. I don't think I've ever tasted this range, just read about it. 92+/100.

s0120-40. 21 DOURO CALLABRIGA, CASA FERREIRINHA 93+/100
Touriga nacional, tinta roriz, touriga franca. Very dark, dense appearance. TN to the fore, black, deep, forceful. Reminds me of a Taylor Fladgate port. Rich, full bodied and textured, great acid, fine grained tannin. Lots of material here. Chewy finish. Deserves to be cellared. 93+/100.

s0120-42. 21 DAO PORTA D'ARMAS, SOC. AGR. RAVASQUEIRA VINHOS 92/100 *
Wine & Spirits 91/100. Solid granite foundation. Nice and dry and neat in cool 2021. Not as overtly fruity as the 2020. Sweetens up on the palate though. Less tannin and more acid than the delicious 2020. Same winemaker's hand, different growing season conditions. Very long, balanced finish. A worthy successor. 92/100. Liked by many attendees and considered ready to drink.

s0120-43. 20 DAO BRANCO, BROADBENT 91/100
Bright, minerally, granite based white Dao. I had a different one from the same vintage a couple of days ago, and it spoke the same language. White Dao sustains. Tangy, lemony flavor and good acidity. Well balanced wine at this stage begging for food. 91/100.

Wine Enthusiast 92/100. My notes: 30% each aragonez, trincideira, and syrah, 10% cab sauv. Properly modern, warm and robust tinta of Portugal's southeast interior. This has some extra depth and range compared to the regional standard. Thanks to a compelling and compatible assembly of grape varieties. Bright fruit flavors and acidity. Wears its alcohol well. Not a sultry sort. Kudos to the maker. I can see the rating. Long and even keeled aftertaste. 92/100.

s0120-46. 23 RIAS BAIXAS ALBARINO O FILLO DA CONDESA, JUAN GIL 91/100
Nice and pointed, penetrating fresh lemon scent. Milder acidity than the 2021 of course, but perfectly adequate for refreshment. Spot on and well priced. 91/100.

s0120-47. 19 RIOJA CRIANZA ANDEN DE LA ESTACION MUGA (92/100)
90% tempranillo, 5% each garnacha, mazuelo; aged a year plus in mainly American oak barrels; Decanter 92/100. The greater bouquet formation thanks to an extra year's aging and in likely newer--and certainly frank--American barrels. Suave, expressive, complex. Suave again, very suave. Fine craftsmanship. The harmony of oak and fruit is crianza ideal. Dusting of wood and fruit tannins in back doesn't preclude current table service. 92/100. Judged Red of the Night by attendees. Mix of old and new styles. Prominent allspice.

s0120-49. 19 RIOJA CRIANZA, RAMIREZ DE LA PISCINA 92+/100
All tempranillo; vines 25+ years old; aged 15 months in French and American oak barrels followed by 5 months in tank and at least 8 months in bottle. Good crianza wood-fruit relationship. There's plenty of Rioja crianza bound up in this one. Yes, the proper proportions of wood and original fruit plus a Rioja Alta structure. Some wood and fruit tannins to shed yet. Works for me. 92+/100.

s0120-50. 19 RIOJA, SAN VICENTE 96+/100
Aged 20 months. In tune with the series and with the 'Super Rioja' modern cosecha style. Lots of positive oak influence as usual. And big, packed in fruit. Wow. All over again. Oak and fruit in spades, and, in balance. Super sized indeed. The tannin is manageable. 96+/100.

s0120-51. 15 RIOJA RESERVA, BODEGAS SIERRA CANTABRIA 93+/100
Suckling 93/100. My notes: Well, there's sure reserva barrel extracts and evolution. The open and ripe 2015 style. A voluminous and classic reserva. Wow, complex. Magnified on the palate. The fruit sweetness of 2015, the oak textural and tannic assets. Big time aging potential. 93+/100.

s0120-52. 12 RIOJA GRAN RESERVA, BODEGAS SIERRA CANTABRIA 94+/100
Parker 93/100. My notes: Deep and black 2012 character persists after all its barrel stint. Solid. Grand indeed. Confident in itself. Yes, black fruit concentration of 2012 takes up all the barrel influence that can measure. Grip and potential. A wine for the next generation. 94+/100.

s0120-54. 23 RIOJA BLANCO, BODEGAS EL COTO 91/100
Est. 1548; from the estate's Finca Carbonera vineyard; viura, verdejo, sauvignon blanc. Very pungent, forthcoming, coordinated, and convincing trio of varietal scents. Yes, crisp, brisk, minerally, in addition to being flavorful. Acid a little on the soft side up front but rallies in back. 91/100. WOTN for one attendee. Positive notes from others. 'Lemon drop on the nose.' 'Full fruit, complexity, good body and length.' 'A worthy bottle.'

s0120-55. 21 CAMPO DE BORJA VERATON, ALTO MONCAYO 94/100
This is always one of my favorite CdBs, and this wine confirms the love affair. The oak is such an asset and always in perfect harmony with the ripe, old vines garnacha fruit. This may be my favorite vintage to date. Oh, yes, there's complexity, balance, savor, and length. Tannins not obtrusive. Take it to the table this winter. 94/100.

s0120-57. 21 CAMPO DE BORJA GARNACHA MONTE OTON, BODEGAS BORSAO 91/100 *
From 15-25 year old vines in three vineyards at 1200'-2400' on slopes of the Moncayo range. Medium dark red violet. Sweet and spicy Borja grenache nose. Really delivers range and forcefulness for the price. Sweet tasting grenache strawberry and raspberry. Peppery spiciness on the palate. My favorite of the value end of Borsao's range. Long, flavorful aftertaste. The alcohol level is met and measured throughout the tasting experience. 91/100. Positive comments from attendees. 'Earthy, peppery nose; raspberry grenache palate.' 'Fresh and juicy; decent structure.'

s0120-58. 21 CAMPO DE BORJA GARNACHA TRES PICOS, BODEGAS BORSAO 93+/100
35-60 year old vines; yields of under 2 tons per acre; aged 5 months in new Bordeaux barrels. Heavy Bottle Award. Also high altitude but much farther south from the Navarra garnacha that preceded it, this is one high octane garnacha..always is. Big time concentration thanks to old vines and low yields. Sweet and round and rich, enough to assuage the high alcohol, which gives body and stamina. Mouthfilling and lasting. Steakhouse garnacha. 93+/100.

In Calatayud, Aragon, birthplace of garnacha; iron rich red and black slate soils at 3000+'; old clones; vines planted 1965 ? 1990. Dark red violet. Plenty of presence on the nose but not much aroma forthcoming. Sweet fruit coats the high alcohol. Works. A grenache of place. Well textured. Well balanced. Lingering. Good price. 91/100. Positive comments from attendees. 'Black cherry in dark chocolate and spirit. Palate goes black raspberry and cherry cordial. Baked black soil.'

2021: 30 year old vines at 2000' elevation. Fresh, vigorous, crisp noseful of warm climate tempranillo generosity. Sweet, spicy. More complex and rangy than usual. Cool year helps temper the power and ripeness. This is black fruited and very racy on the nose. Yes. Again, cool year scores. the fine acidity of 2021 makes it mouthwatering and mealworthy. Get it. Great flavor spectrum feel, lasting finish. Yeah, full bodied, full flavored, mouth coating, lasting. Helluva lot of wine for the money. 91/100.

Parker 92: 'Like with the other 2021s, I found the 2021 Juan Gil Red Blend more harmonious, elegant and integrated. It feels a bit young and the palate is still a bit aggressive. It should get polished with some more time in bottle. Drink 2024-2029.'

s0120-63. 21 JUMILLA TINTO SILVER LABEL, JUAN GIL (93/100)
Parker 93: '2021 is a cooler and fresher year than 2020, even though both were very good. The 2021 Juan Gil (silver label) feels more harmonious, complex and deep than the 2020, as I noticed in most wines when I tasted both years; it's longer and more elegant, very clean. It has similar parameters but the perception is fresher. It matured in French oak barrels. Drink now - 2029.'

Parker 98: 'The NV Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 is non-vintage, but does have some 1927 material in it. This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer.'

Est. 1887; 40% xarello, 30% each macabeu, parellada; disgorged 9/22. All good white fruit. None of the heaviness of red fruit cavas. Delicate bottle bouquet, less forthcoming than the 2018. I suspect this will improve with more bottle age. More prominent autolysis flavors and decided textural elements of the same. Impressive as usual. Ideal balance and surprising weightlessness for a cava. This is the top zone and a top producer. No way it could be confused with one of the cheaper cavas from the Big Three Penedes producers. 92/100. Elicited positive remarks from attendees.
