Wine & Spirits 93 - BEST BUY: ‛The partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and Catena, launched in 1999, produces this 'second' wine with a higher proportion of malbec and less time in oak barrels than the flagship wine (also recommended here). In 2017, Amancaya is the more elegant of the two. The blend includes 33 percent cabernet sauvignon and spends a year in barrels (20 percent new): It's smoky, dark and earthy, with fine cocoa-powder tannins giving the violet-scented fruit a lithe line.‛

Nicely concentrated, plush and elegant, and very fresh for a wine from Vistalba (I would have guessed that this wine included some Uco Valley fruit). This captivating Malbec finishes with firm but suave tannins and a solid structure for mid-term aging.'

SAM-1494. 13 FABRE MONTMAYOU RESERVA MALBEC
How Many bottles/singles: 15.99 each

SAM-1495. 13 FABRE MONTMAYOU GRAND VIN MENDOZA RED
Parker 94: 'The top of the range is the 2013 Fabre Montmayou Grand Vin, which is a blend of mostly Malbec from Vistalba, with a little 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot from the old vines around the winery, their oldest vineyard. This is a classical Bordeaux blend with superb balance and elegance, with very good acidity and some spicy oak from 16 months in French oak barrels. The palate is medium to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. This is ready now but has great concentration, freshness and balance for a slow and positive development in bottle. $45.'

SAM-1511. 15 ZORZAL EGGO TINTO DE TIZA TUPUNGATO VALLEY RED
Parker 94: 'The one blend in the Eggo range is the 2015 Eggo Tinto de Tiza, which mixes Malbec with 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon fermented in 2,000-liter egg-shaped cement vats where the wine matured for almost one year. This feels quite complete and balanced, with good ripeness while keeping the balance and poise. The palate is juicy and fresh, with fine-grained tannins and a bittersweet finish akin to sour cherries. Very tasty and long. Super. Incredible for the price. Drink now-2021. $28.'

How Many bottles/singles: 15.99 each

SAM-1513. 18 FAMILIA ZUCCARDI Q PARAJE ALTAMIRA-VISTA FLORES VALLE DE UCO MALBEC
Parker 92: ‛There is a sense of purity in the 2018 Q Malbec that seems common to the whole portfolio here-wines that show precision, are clean and show no excess in any direction: ripeness, extraction or oak. It comes from Altamira and Chacayes, where 2018 was very balanced, and this is an exercise of blending over 100 components, as they ferment by soil even within the same vineyard. They fermented with different amounts of full clusters depending on the plot, perhaps 30% on average, and they fermented in concrete and with only 30% of the wine matured in used barriques. It's floral, expressive and perfumed, with a medium-bodied palate where the tannins are fine and there's some grip. The wine is serious but easy to drink. They want the wine to have a similar style to the top range: freshness, purity, cleanliness and texture that says it's from the Valle de Uco. Drink now-2022.‛
How Many bottles/singles: 18.99 each

SAM-1514. 15 FAMILIA ZUCCARDI CONCRETO ALTAMIRA MALBEC
Parker 94: 'The second vintage of this unoaked, groundbreaking Malbec, the 2015 Concreto Malbec was produced with grapes from Paraje Altamira that fermented in cement vats with indigenous yeasts (a constant in Zuccardi nowadays) and matured in concrete vats--hence the name--until it was bottled in December 2015. Here they use grapes that only come from parts of their vineyards that have less than 20 centimeters of soil and the calcium carbonate content is the highest they have, as they want this to be pure expression of chalk. The nose is a little reticent, not explosive, a little backward, transmitting a sense of seriousness and harmony. But, the palate is electric, you really feel like you're licking the limestone-covered stones that you have in the vineyards. The nose comes back slowly after time in the glass, with a cocktail of flowers and wild herbs, what you smell when you walk the countryside, especially after it has rained. This is a noteworthy follow up to the groundbreaking first vintage of this wine, possibly with one extra degree of precision and clarity, ending with a dry, dusty sensation, avoiding sweetness at all cost. This is all texture and salinity. Maybe not for all, but I loved it. Drink 2017-2023. $38.'
How Many bottles/singles: 27.99 each

SAM-1515. 19 BODEGAS CALLIA M SAN JUAN MALBEC

How Many bottles/singles: 10.99 each

SAM-1516. 18 BODEGA COLOME AUTENTICO CALCHAGUI VALLEY MALBEC
Tasting Panel 94; Vinous 93: ‛Bright ruby. Pungent, high-toned aromas of blackberry, minerals and licorice. Thick and mouthfilling but leavened by terrific penetrating acidity. The dark berry, wild herb, licorice and chalky mineral flavors are complemented by a chocolatey ripeness. Sweet, plush tannins saturate the entire palate, with the finish displaying explosive length. Very strong, very pure and very smooth; expressive and unique. The Davalos family, owners of Bodega Tacuil, also owned Colome before selling the property to Donald Hess in 2001. (this wine, made without any oak contact, represents a tribute to the old RD bottling of Bodega Tacuil). Drink now-2028.‛

SAM-1517. 18 ALFREDO ROCA FINCAS LA PERSERVERANCIA & SANTA HERMINIA SAN RAFAEL PINOT NOIR
2017: There it is again: that smoky throw-back to Burgundies of yore. Smoked cherry. Unique in its field, year after year./ Pleasing body. Special combo of ripe and tart pinot fruit elements, and that smoky-gamy aura. Perfect old time Burgundy cherry and earth. Sweet pinot with cherry fruit, leaf, tea. Fine tannin. Juicy, flowing finish. Old reliable; no other pinot like it. 91+/100.

SAM-1521. 18 DOMINIO DEL PLATA CRIOS MENDOZA TORRONTES
Vinous 90: ‛Very pale, bright silver. Very subtle, fresh scents of lime blossom and orange peel. This inexpensive Torrontes stands out for its inner-mouth tension, dryness and salty minerality, partly due to the strong calcaire influence of some fruit from vines in Altamira (about 50% of the blend). Notes of citrus peel, menthol and licorice carry well on the finish. Susana Balbo told me that she likes ‛the greenness, orange peel and flowers‛ added by Torrontes grown in Mendoza, which she describes as more elegant than the Cafayate version. $15.‛
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

SAM-1522. 19 TILIA SALTA TORRONTES
2018: Oh, lovely citrus, rose, ginger, and stone fruit aromas. Salta's the spot for torrontes, and it doesn't get any better than this no matter how much you pay./ The same wide aromatic spectrum on the palate. In great intensity. Some torrontes wines lean toward muscat, others gewurztraminer. This has it all. And a proper amount of glycerol for smoothness. Bargain. 93/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 10.99 each

SAM-1523. 19 FAMILIA ZUCCARDI SERIE A SALTA TORRONTES
2015: Parker 90: 'The 2015 Torrontes Serie A is produced with grapes from Cafayate in Salta, in collaboration with Jose Luis Mounier, a Mendoza winemaker who moved to Salta a long time ago and turned into the Torrontes guru. It fermented in stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts. There are perfumed notes with hints of talcum powder and dry roses, spices with citric hints and closer to a Gewurztraminer than a Moscatel. This is sharp and elegant, harvested early, without much maceration, and a tasty, almost salty finish. A noteworthy Torrontes.'

SAM-1546. 13 MATETIC CORRALILLO WINEMAKER‛S BLEND SAN ANTONIO VALLEY RED
Parker 91: ‛The good climate blend 2013 Winemaker's Blend Corralillo is Syrah-based and then there is some 33% Malbec and 18% Cabernet Franc from their El Rosario vineyard, where they have the older plantings, plus a pinch of Petit Verdot. The grapes are destemmed and crushed and put in one open-top tank by gravity. There is a seven-day cold soak and then fermentation starts. Malolactic is in barrels where the wine matured for 16 months. The blend is done at the end, before bottling. They look for hillside vineyards as they get the expression of Syrah with more red fruit and less black olives, fresher, which goes better with the floral aromas of Malbec, and the chocolate and tobacco notes of Cabernet Franc. The nose is very showy, floral, aromatic, intense and clean with integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and the freshness of place, as well as the 2013 growing conditions. There are not that many cool climate blends. I liked this very much, and believe it should develop nicely in bottle. $26.‛

SAM-1547. 14 MATETIC CORRALILLO SAN ANTONIO VALLEY SYRAH
Parker 91+: ‛The first Syrah I tasted was the 2014 Corralillo Syrah, which is sourced from two hillside parcels planted on granitic soils with differing clay components, both biodynamically farmed. It fermented in open vats with different degrees of destemming, crushing and full clusters, but always with indigenous yeasts. The wine was transferred to French oak barrels for malolactic and completed an elevage of 14 months before it was bottled. Both Syrahs were quite closed at first and needed some time to open up, so decanting in advance might be a good idea. Even so, the nose is rather shy, and the aromas are subtle. This is consistent with the house style, as the wines are more about the palate; and they are more about the place than the different varieties but with the logical varietal character in the background. It has good freshness and tasty flavors, with very fine tannins. $26.‛

SAM-1556. 20 PRISMA CASABLANCA VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC
Wine & Spirits 91 - BEST BUY: ‛Ricardo Baettig makes this wine from two estate vineyards in Lo Ovalle, a valley in the coastal range of northwestern Casablanca. It's pungent with passion fruit and green lime flavors, plump and silken in texture, smoky in the end. Whitney Asher of Brava in Lenox, Massachusetts, compared it to underripe pineapple-‛It doesn't taste sweet, but you know there's sweetness there.‛ Then he suggested the almond-skin savor in the finish would work with fish in a nut crust.‛
