FORTIFIED

RFS-2936. ST. JULIAN SOLERA MICHIGAN CREAM SHERRY half liter
2017 and 2018 Michigan Wine Competition Double Gold Medal, Best of Class Trophy. On his ten-day visit to Michigan's vineyards in 2002, Master of Wine Tom Stevenson paid compliments to many of the wines. In his followup article in April's Decanter Magazine, he awards the highest rating, 5 Stars, to four wines, including this one. He comments: 'It has the colour of a genuine old fino, the nose and palate of an extremely fine, genuinely old amontillado, albeit a tad sweeter, and amazing length and elegance, but it is its crystal-clear brilliance that entrances.'
How Many bottles/singles: 14.99 each

RFS-2937. HIDALGO LA GITANA MANZANILLA SHERRY half liter
Wine News 98: 'Clean, pure, fresh appley nose. Clean, crisp, delicate and charming with nutty almond flavors, lovely mouth-feel and long, salty, green olive finish. Ethereal; a whisper of the sea.' From a complex 17-stage criadera, manzanilla doesn't get any better than this. Now marketed in smart half-liter bottles. Manzanilla is delicate; its qualities are fleeting. After opening, refrigerate it, and consume within a month or you will lose many of its ethereal beauties.
How Many bottles/singles: 19.99 each

RFS-2938. LUSTAU SOLERA RESERVA PAPIRUSA MANZANILLA SHERRY
Decanter 95: 'Mid-gold. Smoky and toasty on the nose. Palate is satisfying, full and spicy with a typically clean, long finish. Ripe apple fruit lies underneath and there's a delicate, smoky saline charm. Moving to a fino style rather than the delicacy of a manzanilla, showing more texture.'
How Many bottles/singles: 18.99 each

RFS-2939. RAINERA PEREZ MARIN LA GUITA SANLUCAR DE BARRAMEDA MANZANILLA SHERRY
Oh, this is clean as a whistle. And fully alert. Total, textbook manzanilla./ Yes, lithe and pure. Almond, green olive, and sea salt. Definitive. And well priced. Got to have some of this in my fridge. 96/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 15.99 each

RFS-2940. CESAR FLORIDO CRUZ DEL MAR CHIPIONA FINO SHERRY half bottle

How Many bottles/singles: 14.99 each

RFS-2943. GONZALEZ BYASS TIO PEPE FINO EN RAMA 2016
Wine Spectator 90; Wine Enthusiast 90: 'Pine resin, apple and sea brine aromas set up a plump palate with a slick mouthfeel. Dry slightly bitter melon and salty flavors finish long and briny, which is standard for a well-made fino like this.'
How Many bottles/singles: 29.99 each

RFS-2944. LUSTAU SOLERA RESERVA JARANA FINO SHERRY
Parker 90: 'The brilliant quality of Emilio Lustau's sherries is indisputable. Sherry remains the world's most underappreciated and undervalued beverage. Certainly the Fino, Dry Amontillado, and Palo Cortado would be amazing with Japanese sushi or rich soups. The crisp, pungent, potent Jarana is redolent of the smells and flavors of roasted nuts.'
How Many bottles/singles: 18.99 each

RFS-2945. PEDRO DOMECQ LA INA VERY DRY FINO SHERRY
Totally dry. Light, fresh, ventilating sea breeze aroma. Salted almonds. Green olive, sea salt./ Mellow, nutty, even lightly 'woody' like a Lustau fino. Appropriately fuller bodied than a manzanilla. Very dry indeed. The salt, the almond--just a wonderful thing. Tells the fino tale 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 14.99 each

RFS-2946. VALDESPINO INNOCENTE SINGLE VINEYARD FINO SHERRY half bottle
15%. Very pronounced and assertive flor aroma. Singular./ Full in the mouth. Yes, unique and pungent in character and texture. Yow. 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 14.99 each

RFS-2947. DELGADO ZULETA FINO SHERRY
Est. 1744 at Sanlucar. A good full and fresh fino. Classic, classy, big. Forget the finesse./ Big body and flavor. Fresh, new. Yes. 91/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

RFS-2948. DELGADO ZULETA DRY AMONTILLADO SHERRY
Wine Spectator 92; Wine & Spirits 92 - TOP 100 BEST BUYS: 'Light in body and nearly stabbing in acidity, this is dominated by marine flavors that bring to mind smoked oysters in their depth, richness and complexity. The acidity seems to accelerate through the wine, stirring up notes of spice and toasted almonds as the flavors last. $16.'
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

RFS-2949. DELGADO ZULETA MEDIUM DRY AMONTILLADO SHERRY
Sweeter than the DZ dry amontillado of course; more fig paste./ Again. Good power. Really, what most people want in amontillado. Good, dry, and nutty aftertaste. Yes. 91/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

RFS-2950. GONZALEZ BYASS VINA AB AMONTILLADO SHERRY
Wine & Spirits 93: 'This is the youngest Amontillado from Gonzalez Byass, with four years of aging under flor and another four years in oxidative aging. True to form, it is a delightful wine, graceful and elegant in its fine balance between acidity, minerality and a soft, almost delicate body. It takes on surprising force with air, a sense of limestone in scent and flavor that propels the wine toward something rich, like grilled sea bass.'
How Many bottles/singles: 27.99 each

RFS-2951. LUSTAU SOLERA RESERVA LOS ARCOS DRY AMONTILLADO SHERRY
Parker 93: 'The non-vintage Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Solera Reserva reveals a medium amber hue along with a nutty, honeyed, dry personality with great acid.' My notes: Dry and distinguished. Not a bit of youthful stickiness. This is all about sophistication of age: wood, nut, toffee, time in cask bouquet./ Yes, full dry, good acidity, good spirit. Perfect weight. Wood, nut. All in pleasing harmony. Fine craftsmanship. 93/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 18.99 each

RFS-2952. GONZALEZ BYASS LEONOR 12 YEAR OLD PALO CORTADO SHERRY (End of Bin Sale-- 30% off)
Wine Spectator 92; Wine & Spirits 92: 'Here's a terrific example of the classic Palo Cortado style: One side of this wine is sweet and unctuous, the other more delicate and dry. The two come together in a wine that balances a figgy richness with herbal and mineral notes that last until the very end, leaving a refreshing sensation.'
How Many bottles/singles: 21.99 each (30% off this price)

RFS-2953. LUSTAU PENINSULA PALO CORTADO SHERRY
Parker 92: 'One of my favorites among the drier, lighter-styled Sherries is the non-vintage Palo Cortado Peninsula. Medium amber-colored, with great balance, intensity, and acidity as well as a scorched earth/roasted nut character, it is a stunning, flavorful yet light, crisp Sherry.'
How Many bottles/singles: 27.99 each

RFS-2954. BARBADILLO FULL DRY OLOROSO SHERRY
Oh, boy, what a sophisticated nuttiness! I mean, it's mixed nuts. Some filbert, some brazil, some walnut. Wow! Lots of subtle intricacies. Some sweet woodiness too, a subtle caramel layer./ Truly dry. Sleek, with just the right weight. The flavor goes through and through and lasts a long time. Steal of a price. If only American consumers were more receptive to the obvious mealtime applications of sherries like this. What bargains they're missing! 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

RFS-2955. GONZALEZ BYASS CRISTINA ABOCADO OLOROSO SHERRY
Wine Enthusiast 91: 'The core aroma on this semisweet Sherry is maple syrup, but overall the nose is fresh and vital. Although creamy, this is balanced as a whole. Flavors of mixed nuts and toffee are familiar, while the finish hums along with no faults or bumps.'
How Many bottles/singles: 27.99 each

RFS-2956. GONZALEZ BYASS SOLERA 1847 SUPERIOR SWEET OLOROSO SHERRY
Wine Enthusiast 91: 'Another impressive Oloroso from Gonzalez Byass. This is a sweet, dark, brooding Sherry with prune and other sweet fruit aromas. The palate is rich but has good flow, while dark flavors of dulce de leche and burnt brown sugar are wonderful. Sweet but balanced by mild coffee-like bitterness on the finish.'
How Many bottles/singles: 29.99 each

RFS-2957. GUTIERREZ COLOSIA EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA DRY OLOROSO SHERRY

Parker 94: 'If you are looking for a dry sherry made in a slightly more oxidized style, the non-vintage Dry Oloroso Don Nuno Solera Reserva is your choice. Again, a nuttiness (in this case, walnuts) intermixed with a hint of Chinese black tea combine with salty, caramelized flavors make for a delicious glass of sherry.'
How Many bottles/singles: 27.99 each

RFS-2959. PEDRO DOMECQ RIO VIEJO DRY OLOROSO SHERRY

How Many bottles/singles: 16.99 each

RFS-2960. WILLIAMS & HUMBERT DRY SACK AMOROSO SHERRY
Amoroso: an oloroso sweetened to a lesser degree than a cream. Sweet and nutty. Dried fruit, oak, wood, and spirit. Everything works in tandem./ Nice, even-handed approach featuring sweetness, nut, fig, sultana, wood. Certainly drier than a cream. Quite powerful and spirited. Serve cool or on the rocks as the label advises. 91/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 19.99 each

RFS-2961. ALVEAR CREAM MONTILLA
Parker 91: 'Its dark amber color is accompanied by sweet, nutty, milkshake-like aromas, tremendous precision as well as intensity, and a marvelous finish.'
How Many bottles/singles: 15.99 each

RFS-2962. BARBADILLO FULL RICH CREAM SHERRY
Sweet, nutty, powerful, dry nose. Not pasty like a young, commercial cream. This is a product of long solera aging that shows maturity and sophistication./ Balance of strength and sweetness. Fig, date, raisin. Good acidity too. Huge value. 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

How Many bottles/singles: 21.99 each

RFS-2966. LUSTAU SOLERA EAST INDIA SHERRY
Parker 96: 'The dark amber-hued non-vintage East India Solera is essentially an old Oloroso blended with an old Pedro Ximenez, which gives it a sweet character. It offers more mature notes of maple syrup, brown sugar, spice box, raisin and chocolate beer nuts, and its terrific balancing acidity cuts through the sweetness. This delicious effort is best drunk after the meal.'
How Many bottles/singles: 28.99 each

RFS-2967. 13 ALVEAR PEDRO XIMENEZ DE ANADA MONTILLA half bottle
Parker 93: 'This 2013 Pedro Ximenez de Anada wine is made from 100% hand-harvested Pedro Ximenez grapes that are dried on mats in the sun, and then fermented in stainless steel, with the fermentation being halted by the addition of liquor. It is then aged six months in 500-liter American oak barrels. A medium amber color is followed by notes of maple syrup, brown sugar, honeysuckle, Chinese black tea and marmalade. This sweet, rich, heady, after-dinner wine should drink well for a decade or more. $25.'

RFS-2968. 1927 SOLERA ALVEAR PEDRO XIMENEZ MONTILLA half bottle

It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer.'

RFS-2971. GONZALEZ BYASS NECTAR SUPERIOR SWEET PEDRO XIMENEZ SHERRY
Wine Spectator 93; Wine & Spirits 92: 'Behind the waves of sweetness, of candied walnuts and dried plum aromas, you can feel a saline nerve, a freshness that is later confirmed in the mouth by acidity that seems to surf the caramel, giving a touch of balance. This PX was aged for nine years in botas.'

2011: Wine & Spirits 94 - Top 100 Best Buys: 'This offers more immediate pleasures than the vintage Dow's declared in 2011 -- it comes across as an idealized LBV rather than a baby Vintage. Formidable in its black density and red spice, fragrant with persimmon-like scents and tannins that have the grit of stone-ground chocolate, this is compellingly drinkable and delicious. $25.'

RFS-3023. 11 FONSECA LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORTO bottled 2014
Wine & Spirits 94: 'David Guimaraens blends this wine from Fonseca Vintage lots that do not make the final cut, along with wines initially designated for LBV. He bottles the wine unfined and unfiltered, intending it to be decanted. His 2011 is remarkable: It has the succulent fruit depths of the Fonseca style, and the intensity of a Vintage-level wine. You could quibble and say the tannins are not Vintage quality, with some rhubarb-like astringency, or the wine is too big and powerful for an LBV. But you're not likely to find many LBVs with this full-on ripeness, extraordinary lusciousness and complex flavor length.'

2009: Parker 91: 'The 2009 LBV was partly aged in pipes. The 2009 is a little closed on the nose. It is very pure and defined with fine tension. This is very harmonious with blackberry, black olive and a hint of soy. It is very focused, very precise and although there is not enormous persistency, this LBV is just suffused with class. The tang of orange rind and cumin is lovely.'

RFS-3029. 04 WARRE'S TRADITIONAL LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT bottled 2008
2003: Parker 93: 'The 2003 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a traditional Douro field blend, bottled unfiltered in 2007 with a real cork. It comes in at 105 grams per liter of residual sugar. Fresh, lively and quite rich, this is a Porto with a chocolaty finish, plus fine focus and precision. The delectable flavors make it a bit on the decadent side, but its sunny disposition means that it is never cloying or syrupy. Moreover, it is denser than it first appears. It's not jammy, but it is tightly wound with surprisingly fine mid-palate concentration. It takes awhile (it's better on Day 2) to open up and become more expressive. This seems young, with a long life ahead. It is far, far better on Days 2 and 3. This is pretty fine.'

Parker 92; Wine & Spirits 92: 'This is not your typical non-vintage Brut. The Aubry brothers include ancient indigenous varieties, which make up five percent of the blend; pinot meunier accounts for 45 percent, the balance in equal parts pinot noir and chardonnay. Nearly half of the blend is reserve wine, half of that coming from a solera made up of vintages going back to 1998. If all that seems complicated, the wine is not. Instead, it tastes like an essential Champagne, with scents of chalk, oyster mushroom, pear skin and lemon pulp creating a bold surround-sound of flavor. There's purity to the expression and a healthy weight to the wine. Pour it with sea bass roasted with chanterelles.'

30% each pinot noir, pinot meunier, chardonnay; 5% each petit meslier, arbanne. 36 months en tirage. Terry Theise: ‛Curious how this relatively ‛classic‛ wine is often the ultimate Aubry-rugged, uncompromising, rural. 2009's robust holler suits it better than `08's sleek polish. It's named for the Archbishop who laid the cornerstone for the Reims cathedral.‛

RFS-3115. BARNAUT BOUZY GRAND CRU GRANDE RESERVE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
From the Montagne de Reims, Barnaut's Grande Reserve consists of 2/3 pinot noir and 1/3 chardonnay. Barnaut keeps a 'solera' of reserve wines which contribute to the extraordinary bottle bouquet of this cuvee. Roasted nuts; peanuts in the mix. Red fruit: cherry and currant. Red grapes and grapeskins. Bouzy weight and volume./ Big-scaled, toasty, weighty, rich, thick, concentrated red-fruit impressions. Long. VOLUME! Thorough Bouzy. Pinot noir on steroids. Invite it to the table. 94/100.

100% pinot noir. Full, rich blanc de noirs styling. Fabulously full black-fruit concentration. Hallmark Bouzy. Huge nose of toast, nuts, and biscuity yeast autolysis bouquet. Pinot noir strawberry and cherry subtleties./ Bursts with toast and red fruit. Bouzy through and through./ Wow1 Lots of character. Real giving bdn, no doubt. Got the stuff. Rich, classic Bouzy fullness, ripeness, plumpness. Full squared; mouthfilling. Everlasting finish. Mr Big. A pleasure to drink now. Nonetheless, I'd advise 'losing' a few bottles in the cellar for a couple of years. 97/100.

RFS-3117. BARNAUT BOUZY GRAND CRU ROSE AUTHENTIQUE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Barnaut makes its rose by the 'saignee' method whereby color is 'bled' from pinot noir grape skins early in the winemaking process rather than by the addition of still red wine at the end -- a modern development. That's beautiful. Character, quality, pink fruit by the original method. So not gussied up. Not young pink fruit. Not apart from the rest. At the same time, not overly dry. The fruit is still pink, not orange, or blanched. Just as classy as always. Lots of pink fruit, lots of Bouzy bounty./ Oh, yeah! Freshness, pink fruit, bottle bouquet. What more could you want? That's got it! 95/100.

It gave us great pleasure as an opener at Ann Arbor Tasters Guild's April 18 Old Bridge Cellars dinner. RFS-3182. 12 MOUSSE FILS TERRE D'ILLITE BLANC DE NOIRS BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Terry Theise 2 Stars: 'This is Cedric's best wine to date, and gives a thrilling glimpse of what lies ahead for this outstanding vintner. This is 100% from Cuisles, which a local broker calls ‛The Grand Cru of Meunier,‛ and with this wine you can clearly see why. It's actively minerally -- Meunier! It has the most intricately non-fruit profile I've ever encountered from this variety. Salty, long, fascinating, the core of Meunier that's hidden below the pretty stuff. A dignity. It's para-sensual, beautiful and serious, with herbal notes and spelt bread.'

RFS-3192. 12 PIERRE GIMONNET PREMIER CRU CUVEE GASTRONOME BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 94; Terry Theise 2 Stars: 'This is often my great favorite, for times when I want a slender minerally Champagne with character and length. Didier's goal is to create a Champagne for the table -- thus it has 4 rather than 6 atmospheres of pressure, and a silkier mousse. That said, we're all starting to realize that most Champagne is fantastic with food. It's 50% Chouilly Montaigu and Rond Buissons, both in the 55-65 year old range, 21.5% Cuis, 15.5% Cramant and 13% Oger. Maybe it's that Oger or perhaps it's the 2012, but this is a fabulous iteration of this (I bought it immediately for my cellar), textbook, a paradigm, the best in years. Long and rich, but incisively thready and chalky.'

RFS-3193. JEAN LALLEMENT VERZENAY GRAND CRU BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine Spectator 92; Parker 92; Wine & Spirits 93: 'Everything about this wine feels natural, from the heirloom apple and apple blossom savor to the Montrachet richness. Fine bubbles lift that deep, savory richness and sustain the flavors for a minute or more after each sip. It's elegant and mouthwatering, more a wine than a Champagne, to serve with Chatham cod roasted in a chorizo crust.'

RFS-3196. PIERRE MONCUIT HUGUES DE COULMET BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 94: 'From the Cote de Sezanne, this wine is essentially a single vintage. It's immediately bold and fragrant, with hints of strawberries and green apple over a layer cake of chalk. The purity of the wine is compelling, with scents of fossilized oyster shells that could make it seem like a fine Chablis with bubbles. Vinous and rich, this performs far beyond its price. Grab a case for the holidays.'

RFS-3202. R. H. COUTIER AMBONNAY GRAND CRU BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Parker 93/100. My notes: One third of the Coutier estate is in chardonnay, planted in 1946. Chardonnay is unusual at Ambonnay, on the Montagne de Reims. This has a lovely signature aroma of barely cooked apple alongside an almost pinot character, testimony to its terroir. Full style of a Montagne de Reims chardonnay. Toasty. Nutty. RFS-3284. NINO FRANCO RUSTICO PROSECCO DI VALDOBBIADENE SUPERIORE BRUT
Wine & Spirits 92; Parker 90: 'The NV Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Rustico is a rather exuberant yet steely, powerful Prosecco. White peaches, crushed rocks, smoke and flowers are some of the nuances that flow from this large-scaled, important Prosecco. A rich, textured finish rounds things out nicely. The Rustico is far from an easy-going cocktail wine, and is sure to be better at the table than on its own. Nino Franco is one of the top names in serious Prosecco. At their best, these wines will make readers reconsider the conventional wisdom that Prosecco is a simple, straightforward aperitif wine.'
