INTRODUCTION
WINES OF THE YEAR - 2017
Here's a compilation of available wines that have earned Top 100 or Year's Best distinction from three of our favorite wine publications: Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and Wine & Spirits. Given such notoriety, these wines sell out or change vintages quickly, so you snooze, you lose.

s1123-102. 13 K VINTNERS KING COAL STONERIDGE VINEYARD WASHINGTON RED
Wine Enthusiast 95 - Top 100 Cellar Selections: 'A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Syrah, brooding aromas of ground stone, herb, brown stem and black fruit give way to dense layered blackberry flavors. It shows great focus, poise, texture and exquisite length. Best from 2021 to 2027.'
How Many: 99.95 each

s1123-103. 14 DE LILLE D2 COLUMBIA VALLEY RED
Wine & Spirits 94 - Year's Best American Cabernets: 'Merlot leads in this elegant, Bordeaux-inspired red; cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc fill out the blend. Its initial scents are savory: cedar and tobacco leaf; the flavors more given to spiced cherry and plum—merlot-driven in their nimble, succulent, light-toned fruit. As is the acidity, the wine pulsing and vibrant, a clean expression of Bordeaux varieties to serve with steak. $48.'
How Many: 44.99 each

s1123-104. 15 AIRFIELD ESTATES YAKIMA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 91 - Year's Best American Cabernets: 'This lean cabernet shows off the cool side of Yakima in its conifer scents and dark inky color, with an elegant line of black-currant fruit supported by a firm spine of tannins. Serve it with a black-and-blue steak.'
How Many: 17.99 each

s1123-105. 13 ANDREW WILL CIEL DE CHEVAL VINEYARD RED MOUNTAIN RED
Wine & Spirits 94 - Year's Best American Cabernets: 'Chris Camarda’s Ciel du Cheval bottling is often dominated by merlot (56 percent in 2013, the balance cabernet franc). It is often his richest as well, and this wine doesn’t disappoint, with scents of cedar, red plum and plum skin. The flavors are unabashedly intense in a Red Mountain mode, the radiant heat of the place lending uncharacteristic power to a merlot-based red, with the lasting tannins for beef tenderloin. $64.'
How Many: 59.95 each

s1123-106. 14 CANVABACK RED MOUNTAIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 91 - Year's Best American Cabernets: 'A faint, intriguing scent of mint and violets leads in this compelling red, a wine drawn from purchased fruit as the Canvasback team waits for its own vineyards to mature. With air, it takes on a dark fruit tone of black plums and cherries, lined with cedar, limned with chalky tannins. Stuffed with good components, this needs time to knit. $40.'
How Many: 37.99 each

s1123-107. 13 ANDREW WILL SORELLA CHAMPOUX VINEYARD HORSE HEAVEN HILLS RED
Wine & Spirits 95 - Top 100: ?Inky and dark when first poured, Chris Camarda's top selection in 2013 feels massive at first pass; it's mostly cabernet drawn from the old-vine blocks at Champoux. With air its flavors turn a corner, as much savory as dark-fruited, leaning toward crushed pink peppercorn and ground sumac, with textures that seem to reflect that vine age in the finesse of their suave tannins. Those tannins carry a dusty minerality that is saturating but not heavy in the least. Cellar, then serve with beef tenderloin.?
How Many: 84.95 each

s1123-108. 15 CANOE RIDGE THE EXPEDITION HORSE HEAVEN HILLS CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 92 - Year's Best American Cabernets: 'A remarkably expressive and complex red and a remarkable value, this has a fine herbal tinge to its flavors, a scent of mint and cedar that frames the fruit, with an oak component that’s firm but not obtrusive. Buy it by the case for pot-roast Sundays. $16.'
How Many: 14.99 each

s1123-109. 15 DUCKHORN DECOY SONOMA CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 90 - Year?s Best American Cabernets: ?A satisfying prime-rib wine, this is lean and bright, with simple black-cherry freshness that lasts. The overall impression is tangy and clean, focused on fruit clarity. $25.?
How Many: 22.99 each

s1123-110. 14 ST. FRANCIS SONOMA CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 90 - Year?s Best American Cabernets: ?A rich cabernet with black-fruit gentleness, this feels integrated even if it's big and firmed up by smoky oak. Soft, cushioned and round, it's ready for seared filet mignon.?
How Many: 21.99 each

s1123-111. 13 GEYSER PEAK WALKING TREE ALEXANDER VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 91 - Year?s Best American Cabernets: ?The middle of this wine is big and warm, with chocolate gentleness to its tannins. The frame is firm, wrapping that supple core into an elegant, clean and dynamic wine that's remarkably easy to drink. Pour it with thick-cut lamb chops. $30.?
How Many: 21.99 each

s1123-112. 14 LANCASTER ESTATE ALEXANDER VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine Spectator 94 - Top 100: 'A big, rich Cabernet, with firm, structured tannins that are powerful and edgy, framing the core of blackberry, black cherry, plum and espresso flavors. An impressive effort. Best from 2019 through 2029. $75.'
How Many: 59.95 each

s1123-113. 13 MURPHY-GOODE ALL IN ALEXANDER VALLEY CLARET
Wine & Spirits 91 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?Based on cabernet from the Terra A Lago vineyard in the Mayacamas foothills and merlot from the Geyserville bench, this is a chewy yet sophisticated red, carrying a black earthen flavor in its tannins, even as they're smoothed by oak. It feels properly ripe, its sails full of red fruit, hinting at higher-toned floral aromas and a woodsy savor that speaks to hillside fruit.?
How Many: 22.99 each

s1123-114. 14 JOSEPH PHELPS ESTATE INSIGNIA NAPA VALLEY RED
Wine Enthusiast 96 - Top 100 Cellar Selections: 'This fine vintage of Insignia combines 87% Cabernet Sauvignon with 9% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc. Soft, supple and seamless, it offers rich but balanced cassis and milk chocolate flavors, with supportive and complementary oak. It should do well in the cellar and will be best from 2024–2034. $250.'
How Many: 239.95 each

s1123-115. 14 REVANA NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine Spectator 96 - Top 100: 'This is a thrilling wine, from the opening vanilla bean scents to the pure, rich and deep core of blackberry, currant and black licorice flavors. Folds in espresso and cedar notes amid the long and persistent finish. Best from 2019 through 2038. $165.'
How Many: 144.95 each

s1123-116. 13 SILVERADO ESTATE NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 93 - Year?s Best American Cabernets: ‘Jon Emmerich blends this wine from three estate vineyards-Stag's Leap, Mt. George and Oakville Station. It's a deeply mineral-inflected wine, with chipped-stone tannins that are neither pushed nor heavily extracted, but gracious in their taut structure. The purple fruit may be concentrated, but it also has a pretty side, hinting at redder tones and green-olive salinity underneath. Probably best enjoyed over the next five years, this is built for roast lamb. $50.’
How Many: 42.99 each

s1123-117. 13 STICKYBEAK NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 90 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?This wine's broad, rich, cherry-scented fruit has cabernet's varietal notes of tobacco and red bell pepper. The tannins are gentle, saturated with sweet fruit, a little heavy in the end. Built for braised beef. $25.?
How Many: 21.99 each

s1123-118. 13 INGLENOOK RUTHERFORD CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 95 - Year?s Best American Cabernet s: ‘This is the wine formerly known as Cask. In 2013, it benefited from the viticultural work Philippe Bascaules and his team undertook to help the vines ripen their fruit more efficiently. Presented as a selection of the best lots that remain in the cellar after the blending of Rubicon, it ages in a combination of French (90 percent) and American oak, half of it new. It's a remarkably gracious 2013, elegant and bright, with crunchy cool fruit that feels supercharged by the Rutherford tannins, a gravelly growl of energy. Those dark tannins shade the brightness of the fruit, even as the fruit adds tension and verticality to their richness. If you collect Napa Valley cabernet, this is a wine to cellar, especially at the price.’
How Many: 79.95 each

s1123-119. 12 INGLENOOK RUBICON RUTHERFORD RED
Wine & Spirits 95 - Year?s Best American Cabernets: ‘Philippe Bascuales worked for two decades with Paul Pontallier at Chateau Margaux before coming to Inglenook in 2011 (since Pontallier passed away this past spring, Bascuales has returned to Château Margaux, and is now directing both the Bordeaux property and this Rutherford estate). The pace at which he has transformed the wines is nothing less than astonishing, as if the force of this great Napa Valley site had been waiting to be unleashed. It’s not that the wines were troubled in recent vintages; more that they followed the contemporary Napa Valley story of quality being the pinnacle achievement. The 2008, for example, was ‘sweet, firm and juicy,’ with tannins that cushioned the fruit, earning 93 points when I tasted it for the magazine. Bascaules has begun to bring back the voice of the property, a collection of vineyards in the western benchlands of Rutherford, reassembled by Francis Ford Coppola in the pattern of Gustave Niebaum’s original estate. This is the kind of land that made Napa Valley famous. And this is the kind of wine I want to drink. It has the freshness of ripe cabernet sauvignon, with none of the darker, dimpled tones of hyperripe fruit, presenting a delicate red berry scent and the gracious refinement of Rutherford tannins. Some of our tasters reacted to the new oak on the wine, the touch of creaminess French oak brings to the texture, even as they admitted that it was handled with restraint and that the wine showed some tension. The oak is not an issue for me, as the youthful fruit sings through any vessel used to age it, with the message of great vintages to come. $210.’
How Many: 189.95 each

s1123-120. 13 HOOPES OAKVILLE CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 93 - Year?s Best American Cabernets: ?The Hoopes family farms ten acres in the flood plain of the Napa River, at Oakville’s southern border with Yountville. Those rich soils delivered a 2013 that’s succulent, with the juiciness of fresh raspberries and the ripeness of cherry jam. It has shape, even as the tannins are soft and gentle, like spiced chocolate. This is clean and easy to love. $75.?
How Many: 64.95 each

s1123-121. 13 SMITH-MADRONE ESTATE SPRING MOUNTAIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 95 - Top 100: ‘The Smith brothers hit a home run with their 2013, their mountaintop vines producing a cabernet that rises far above the grapey purple fruit and chocolate-oak richness of so many wines of the vintage. Instead, it tastes like freshly picked raspberries, their bright flavor structured by mountain-grown grape-skin tannins. There's a pear-like shape to the wine, plump and delicious as it fills the mouth with flavor. Here's a Napa Valley cabernet to make you smile, whether you open it now or any time over the next ten years.’
How Many: 49.99 each

s1123-122. 13 MT. BRAVE MOUNT VEEDER DISTRICT CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine Enthusiast 95 - Top 100: 'The mountain appellation speaks loudly in this wine, contributing juicy blackberry, tar and leather, all within a forested context of wild truffle and crunchy leaves. Concentrated and robust in body and ripeness, it unwinds slowly in the glass, imparting jolts of black pepper as it goes. $75.'
How Many: 69.95 each

s1123-123. 14 DOMAINE EDEN SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 92 - Year?s Best American Cabernets: ?Jeffrey Patterson blends this wine from five Bordeaux varieties-mostly cabernet sauvignon-and from five vineyard sites, including Mount Eden, Domaine Eden and three other growers in Saratoga. It's a silken 2014, with tannins that are as dark and tight as wild blueberry skins. Those tannins give it a youthful savor, though they don't detract from its immediate drinkability, offering a delicious and distinctly Santa Cruz Mountains cabernet. $40.?
How Many: 34.99 each

s1123-124. 14 JUSTIN JUSTIFICATION PASO ROBLES RED
Wine Spectator 94 - Top 100: 'Smooth-textured, graceful and refined, with a tenderness to the texture and tannins. Features a warm, inviting mix of red and dark berry flavors and subtle shades of licorice, light mocha and savory herbs, revealing floral scents and a long, persistent finish that echoes the core essence. Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Drink now through 2035. $50.'
How Many: 47.99 each

s1123-125. 13 CHAPPELLET NAPA VALLEY CABERNET FRANC
Wine Enthusiast 94 - Top 100 Cellar Selections: 'This is an impressively well-crafted, and beautiful wine, blended with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Malbec, the main variety mountain-grown on Pritchard Hill. It shines in big, bold and powerfully built black fruit and leather. Dusty, firm tannins and a taste of graphite, coffee and tar are also highly evident. The finish is tart and seasoned in white pepper. Best enjoyed 2023 through 2033.'
How Many: 84.95 each

s1123-126. 14 KEN WRIGHT BRYCE VINEYARD RIBBON RIDGE PINOT NOIR
Wine Enthusiast 96 - Top 100 Cellar Selections: 'This riveting wine displays the exceptional finesse and precision that fruit from this AVA can deliver. It's Pinot Noir expressed in the most subtle and demanding way. Beautifully orchestrated red fruits, sappy acids, lush spices, perfect balance and an immaculate mineral-soaked finish are all on display. Drink 2018 through 2030. $63.'
How Many: 57.95 each

s1123-127. 14 MARIETTA GIBSON BLOCK MCDOWELL VALLEY SYRAH
Wine Enthusiast 94 - Top 100 Cellar Selections: 'Deep color and intense, deep fruit flavors along with a good tannic structure mark this full-bodied wine as one to appreciate and age. The texture is fine grained, dry and layered, with concentrated black cherry, smoke, clove and cedar flavors that unfold slowly on the palate and finish. While tempting now, this will be best after 2022. $36.'
How Many: 31.99 each

s1123-128. 14 J. LOHR ESTATES SOUTH RIDGE PASO ROBLES SYRAH
Wine Enthusiast 91 - Top 100 Best Buys: 'This bottling offers gingerbread cake, baked blueberry and smoked pork on the nose. It's soft on the palate, with finely polished tannins imparting a plush texture. Black plum, strawberry and a touch of mint mark the palate. The structure shows itself just enough on the finish.'
How Many: 14.99 each

s1123-129. 16 STOLPMAN PARA MARIA DE LOS TECOLOTES SANTA BARBARA RED
Wine Enthusiast 93 - Top 100: 'This Syrah, which is enhanced by 15% Petit Verdot, is one of the better wines from the region on the market for less than $25. Awesome aromas of pepper, blackberry and charred beef are intense and deep, while the palate is lifted by bountiful acidity and flavors of boysenberry, white, black and green peppercorns, incense and sagebrush.'
How Many: 21.99 each

s1123-130. 14 K VINTNERS THE BOY WALLA WALLA VALLEY GRENACHE
Wine Enthusiast 94 - Top 100: 'A blend of fruit from Northridge Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope and Powerline Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley, this pale colored wine delivers vibrant, complex aromas of strawberry, brown stems, fresh flowers, green olive, smoked meat and moist earth. The cranberry and smoked meat flavors are soft and sumptuous, leading to an extended fruit and savory note finish. It's all about elegance but the purity is dazzling. $50.'
How Many: 47.99 each

s1123-131. SOKOL BLOSSER EVOLUTION WINEMAKER'S BIG TIME AMERICAN RED
Wine Enthusiast 90 - Top 100 Best Buys: 'Like the Evolution White, this nonvintage blend is labeled by edition, this being the fifth. The blend includes Syrah, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and a splash of Evolution white. It's built for quaffing, and would be just as comfortable in a camp-friendly bota bag as on your dinner table. Cranberry fruit underlined with a strong streak of slate keeps it fresh and lively.'
How Many: 14.99 each

s1123-132. 15 PAUL DOLAN MENDOCINO ZINFANDEL
Wine & Spirits 91 - Top 100 Best Buys: ‘Grown organically on hillsides above the Russian River, this is everything you'd hope to get in an inexpensive Mendocino zinfandel (or an expensive one, for that matter). It smells a bit jammy but turns out to be deliciously spicy and brambly, its lush blue fruit taking on a vibrant, floral-tinged length. It's a ripe, sunny wine that's hard not to love.’
How Many: 14.99 each

s1123-133. 14 DRY CREEK VINEYARD OLD VINE DRY CREEK VALLEY ZINFANDEL
Wine & Spirits 94 - Top 100: ?Tim Bell made this 2014 primarily from four centenarian vineyards, including Beeson Ranch, a relatively cool east-facing site planted against Dry Creek's western hills. This seems to draw quite a bit of its character from the petite sirah component of the blend, which mostly comes from Beeson's old vines-the oldest date to the 1880s. The result is a zin with a tooth-staining purple color, the structure firm and tannic. It's cool rather than jammy, maybe because the dry, early vintage was untouched by any blistering heat waves, maybe because the old dry-farmed vines tempered the effects of the drought. The intense blue fruit-wild blueberry amplified by juniper and cassis-seems to want to explode into sunny juiciness, yet feels pulled back by the soil-scented cool of the tannins. This feels fresh, intense and balanced to age-cellar a case to watch it evolve over the next two decades. ?
How Many: 31.99 each

s1123-134. 14 FOUR VINES OLD VINE LODI ZINFANDEL
Wine Enthusiast 90 - Top 100 Best Buys: 'This beautiful wine has aromas as ripe as dried figs, flavors as deep as blackberries falling off the vine, and a welcoming, broad texture that begs for another sip. While full bodied, it's easy to relax into.'
How Many: 14.99 each

s1123-135. 16 ROCHIOLI ESTATE RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC
Wine & Spirits 95 - Top 100: ‘If you've never been blown away by a California sauvignon blanc, you owe it to yourself to taste this wine. Over half of the fruit comes from an old vineyard that Joe Rochioli, Jr., planted in 1959; it's now farmed by his son Tom. Old vines, as well as the sunny, temperate climate and stony soil along the banks of the Russian River, drew the fruit to a precise, focused intensity in 2016. You'll find ripe, luscious flavors of papaya and peach-even redder tones of wild strawberry-tied to a profound sense of mineral depth. For all of its power, the fruit remains vivid and mouthwatering, as pure as spring water.’
How Many: 42.99 each

s1123-136. 14 SIXTO UNCOVERED WASHINGTON CHARDONNAY
Wine Spectator 94 - Top 100: ‘Dynamic, yet sleek and refined, driven by a core of minerally acidity that meshes with the delicately complex apple, Meyer lemon and spicy yeast accents that linger long on the finish. Drink now through 2021.’
How Many: 37.99 each

s1123-137. 15 GARY FARRELL RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY CHARDONNAY
Wine Enthusiast 95 - Top 100: 'A scent of French butter offers an immediate invitation to this excellent wine. Austerity on the palate gives way to a juicy core of invigorating tangerine and white peach flavors. The gravelly minerality on the midpalate finishes softly and with ease.'
How Many: 34.99 each

s1123-138. 15 TALLEY OLIVER’S VINEYARD EDNA VALLEY CHARDONNAY
Wine Enthusiast 95 - Top 100: 'Plump aromas of lemon mousse, meringue, wet limestone, white flowers and ripe key lime show on the nose of this excellent bottling. The palate bursts with flavors of cool cream, sea salt and lemon pith, set against a chalky texture. A mysteriously compelling experience. $38.'
How Many: 34.99 each

s1123-139. 16 DRY CREEK VINEYARD DRY CLARKSBURG CHENIN BLANC
Wine Enthusiast 91 - Top 100 Best Buys: ‘Orange-marmalade aromas set the stage for a rather full-bodied, dry and flavorful wine. Floral and fruity elements are counter-balanced by a tangy texture and subtle mineral accents. A classic of the type, it has a lot of personality, a great presence on the palate and a lingering finish.’
How Many: 14.99 each

s1123-140. 15 RAPTOR RIDGE WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT GRIS
Wine Enthusiast Top 100: 'A pretty light gold hue, this wine shines brightly from the first sniff to the last sip. It's clean and dense, with notes of bee pollen and lemon oil, flavors of apple and pear, and a touch of vanilla cookie.'
How Many: 21.99 each

s1123-141. 16 CHATEAU STE. MICHELLE COLUMBIA VALLEY DRY RIESLING
Wine & Spirits 90 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?A terrific wine for the price, this riesling's best feature is its freshness; it's a high-toned, leesy white leading with scents of apple blossoms and a hint of lime. The flavors are at once crisp and round, supple and generous, with the body to pair with seafood, like octopus or squid.?
How Many: 9.99 each

s1123-142. 15 HOGUE LATE HARVEST COLUMBIA VALLEY RIESLING
Wine & Spirits 88 - Best For $10 or Less: ?Simple and totally compelling, this halbtrocken riesling has a baked-apple scent with hints of fennel and celery leaves. The flavors are simple and satisfying, making it a generous white for sipping in the afternoon.?
How Many: 9.99 each

s1123-143. 15 DR. KONSTANTIN FRANK DRY FINGER LAKES RIESLING
Wine & Spirits 91 - Top 100 Best Buys: ‘This dry white has an intriguing pine-tip freshness to its scent, and a breadth of wheaty lees and sweet apple flavor that’s firm on the back end, tightened by a splash of lime.’
How Many: 15.99 each

s1123-144. 14 BODEGA NORTON PRIVADA MENDOZA RED
Wine & Spirits 94 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?Privada, Norton's flagship, used to be a big wine, concentrated in ripe fruit and well oaked, but this new vintage shows a new direction for the company, one of the largest producers in Argentina. A blend of 40 percent malbec, 30 percent merlot and 30 percent cabernet sauvignon from different areas of Mendoza, this is crunchy and vibrant in its ripe red fruit flavors, the mineral tones giving it depth and dimension. Radiant and young, with firm tannins and acidity, it will stand up well to grilled steak with chimichurri sauce. $26.?
How Many: 23.99 each

s1123-145. 16 SANTA JULIA (+) MENDOZA MALBEC
Wine & Spirits 89 - Best For $10 or Less: ?Radiant in red fruits, with notes of violets and spice, this is a refreshing example of a new-wave malbec, more focused on fresh fruit than extraction or oak. Pour it now with lasagna.?

Wine Enthusiast 92 - Top 100 Cellar Selections: 'Spicy aromas of balsam wood, tobacco and sawmill work well with ripe but reserved red-berry scents. Tight, tannic but also fresh as opposed to drying, this Cabernet from a cool year delivers a classic set of herbal berry, plum and wood spice flavors. A ripped finish is dry and oaky now, with core fruit resting for the future. Drink 2018–2028.'
How Many: 25.99 each

s1123-147. 14 VINA SANTA CAROLINA RESERVA DE FAMILIA MAIPO VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 94 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?The structure of this wine is unusual for Maipo, where it's rare to find such a stony, intense and powerful cabernet. This has an herbal side, and it is filled with minty and red fruits, but its main aspect is its verticality. It comes from the alluvial soils of Mariscal, on the northern bank of the Maipo River, one of the prime growing areas in the Maipo Alto zone. A wine to lay down for five years, this should evolve well. $20.?
How Many: 17.99 each

s1123-148. 15 VINA SANTA EMA RESERVA MAIPO VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine Spectator 91 - Top 100: 'Dark plum and dried red berry flavors dominate this muscular red, with plenty of minty and savory accents. Medium-grained tannins support chocolate and cream details on the finish. Drink now through 2021.'

Wine & Spirits 90 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?Round and supple, this sauvignon has intensity and richness to its flavors, pumped up by toasted-lees notes, even as fruit holds to the crispness of green apple skin. The apple and lees notes merge in a clean, juicy, vinous wine with tight length of flavor.?
How Many: 14.99 each

s1123-151. 16 MATUA MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC

How Many: 17.99 each

s1123-154. 15 PARINGA SOUTH AUSTRALIA SHIRAZ
Wine Enthusiast 90 - Top 100 Best Buys: ‘This is the sort of stereotypical Aussie Shiraz the haters love to hate. It's full-bodied, warm and plush, oozing with blackberries and plums and loaded up with vanilla and mocha. Yet it's well done, inexpensive and just plain delicious. Drink now-2020.’
How Many: 11.99 each

s1123-155. 15 YALUMBA EDEN VALLEY VIOGNIER
Wine & Spirits 91 - Top 100 Best Buys: ‘A dynamic, peppery viognier, one taster related this more closely to the Rhone than the New World. The heady flavors of kumquat and peach are generous while still having some cut. For a springtime pasta tossed with butter and fresh peas. $20.’
How Many: 17.99 each

s1123-156. 14 CHATEAU PALMER, 3ME GRAND CRU, MARGAUX
Wine Enthusiast 97 - Top 100 Cellar Selections: 'It's easy to call this a beautiful wine—it's dense and lush, with great layers of black fruit and acidity. The first fully biodynamic vintage from this estate has certainly yielded impressive ripe fruit, with structured tannins and dark berry flavors that linger long. It has enormous potential, certainly not be ready to drink before 2027.'
How Many: 319.95 each

s1123-157. 14 VIEUX CHATEAU CERTAN, POMEROL
Wine Enthusiast 97 - Top 100 Cellar Selections: 'This is a rich, finely structured wine. It is highly perfumed, packed with black fruits and has a dark, firm texture. s1123-158. 14 CAHORS, CHATEAU DU CEDRE
Wine Enthusiast 93 - Top 100: 'This wine is ripe in spicy black-currant aromas on the nose and intense in juicy black fruit on the dense palate. The rich, generous layers of fruit perfectly balance the tannins that build up to a harmonious whole. Still young, it will be best from 2019.'

s1123-159. 15 CAHORS MALBEC PIGMENTUM, GEORGES VIGOUROUX
Wine & Spirits 91 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?A blend from the best parcels of Georges Vigouroux's three châteaus, this is polished, modern Cahors. But under all its smoky, sweet fruit, there's a tense acidity that leads the wine into more delicate territory, where red strawberry notes light the way, and herbal notes bring freshness. It's a terrific bargain at the price, a red to play off of rosy slices of duck breast. $12.?

s1123-160. 12 MADIRAN CHATEAU MONTUS, VIGNOBLES BRUMONT
Wine Enthusiast 94 - Top 100 Cellar Selections: 'The wine comes from the grand showpiece estate of Madiran. A blend that is dominated by Tannat produces a wine that is still so young. Bold fruits and firm tannins are right to the fore, along with acidity and a strong mineral texture. It's a powerful and impressive wine that also manages elegance as well. The wine will take several more years to soften. Drink from 2020. $35.'

s1123-163. 15 FRANCAIS BOIS ROUGE, AGNES & RENE MOSSE
Wine & Spirits 93 - Top !00 Best Buys: ?Mostly cabernet franc, with cabernet sauvignon and gamay, this grows in a mix of schist gravels. The Mosse family farms their vineyards and makes the wines under biodynamics, and you'd be hard pressed to find a wine that smells more like a rose garden, recently fertilized with manure that drove the flowers into full bloom. The dark fruit arrives if you're patient, opening to a delicious earthy coolness that wraps dark berries up with beets and what one taster described as roasted bits of meat. Decant it if you open it now, to serve with steak frites.?

He ferments and ages it in stainless steel, bringing out the Bing cherry brightness of his cabernet franc, its mineral aspects reading as sun on stone. Exuberant, rich and fresh, it calls out for rillettes or duck confit.?

s1123-165. 14 MOREY ST. DENIS VIEILLES VIGNES, LIGNIER-MICHELOT
Wine & Spirits 95 - Top 100: ?This Morey was the find in our recent Côte de Nuits tastings. It may carry a humble village classification, but it delivers pure Burgundian bliss, a wine of powerful concentration and effortless charm. The dark fruit and velvet texture share depths of umami-associate editor Deanna Gonnella described it as ?when you sear a steak in a cast-iron pan.? It builds from meaty black-cherry bass notes toward celery root and nori, cilantro and thyme. Sunny and cool, this is a beautiful wine to decant now, or to stash away for a few years in the cellar.?

s1123-167. 14 CHABLIS, VAL DE MER
Wine & Spirits 92 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?Patrick Piuze makes this wine in a partnership with Moutard-Diligent, using different vineyards and a different winery than for his own brand. He produces this from three parcels, fermenting it in stainless steel without added yeast, capturing the clean fragrance of a young Chablis in high notes of orange citrus over a deeper soil imprint. It's fresh and vibrant, singing like wind through wheat. Buy a case to enjoy as it develops over the next four years.?

s1123-168. 11 COTE ROTIE CHATEAU D'AMPUIS, E. GUIGAL
Wine Enthusiast 94 - Top 100: 'The essence of the appellation smokes out from the glass, offering hints of cracked pepper, bacon, clove and leather. It's reasonably full-bodied for Cote Rotie, with feral, smoked-meat flavors, ample spice and plenty of the concentrated plummy fruit. Tannins are silky, making this approachable now, but likely capable of aging well for at least 10–15 years.'

Wine & Spirits 88 - Best For $10 or Less: ?Olivier Hillaire runs La Part des Anges, a brasserie in the town of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This wine, a blend of grenache, carignan and syrah from vineyards about 19 miles west of town, seems designed with brasserie fare in mind: It's dark-berried and spicy, with a rustic growl of tannins that accents the wine's savory side and fresh, brisk acidity that keeps it lively.?

s1123-171. 14 CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE, BERTRAND STEHELIN
Wine & Spirits 94 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?The Stehelin family is most known for its Gigondas wines at Domaine Paillere & Pied-Gu, which they've run for five generations. Bertrand, who began making the wines alongside his parents in 2001, launched his own label in 2004, slowly acquiring 22 acres of vines across the southern Rhone, including some old vines in Châteauneuf. Mostly grenache, with just two percent syrah, entirely destemmed and aged in stainless steel, this is sappy and spicy: wine as a vehicle for garrigue, sun and wind. There's nothing fancy about it, winning instead on its purity and grace, the way it evokes both the flesh of a cherry and the chew of its skin, and the clean earthiness of freshly turned soil.?

s1123-176. 14 DOURO DUAS QUINTAS, RAMOS PINTO
Wine & Spirits 90 - Top 100 Best Buys: ‘Spicy schist notes greet you when you first smell this wine, the gentle warmth of sun on stone that captures this wine’s fruit at a fine moment of ripeness. Designed as an estate blend from a warmer schist site near the river and a cooler, high-elevation granitic vineyard, this vintage of Duas Quintas is impressive for its jasmine-scented purple fruit and lasting spice. s1123-180. 05 RIBERA DEL DUERO UNICO, VEGA SICILIA
Wine & Spirits 96 - Top 100: ?The N-122 runs like a spine across Ribera del Duero from east to west, separating the Vega Sicilia winery from the Unico vineyards across the road. Those vineyards face north, on undulating slopes rich in chalk, and give wines that can live for decades. That's the case for this 2005. The concentration of this vintage was so great that Vega Sicilia held the bottles back an extra couple of years; now, that patience has been rewarded with a beautiful, enchanting complexity of aromas and flavors that encompass earth, spice, roses, black fruits and minerals. It still feels tense and energetic, a lively, radiant Unico that will continue to develop for at least a decade in bottle-even though now, sitting in front of a half-empty glass, it is difficult to imagine how it can be better. It can. $505.?

s1123-212. 15 GRAHAM'S THE STONE TERRACES VINTAGE PORTO
Wine & Spirits 96 - Year's Best Ports: 'The arid conditions and early-season heat of 2015 favored north-facing sites, like one of the three parcels at Malvedos that make up the Stone Terraces. The other two parcels face east and west, spared from some of the heat of May and June. The summer was less intense, but no less dry, until substantial rains fell on September 15, resuscitating the vines and allowing for more complete ripeness when harvest resumed several days later. This second release of Stone Terraces combines the energy of its powerful tannins with the voluptuous richness Malvedos can give in the best years. It has the green esteva note of great young Porto—a scent close to Thai basil—and has a purity to the structure that makes it feel grand. $200.'

There's spiciness to the finish, close to mace or allspice. This is 60 percent pinot meunier, and it takes what can sometimes be a rustic variety toward refinement.?
How Many: 59.95 each

s1123-220. 08 BARON-FUENTE MILLESIME BRUT CHAMPAGNE jeroboam
Wine & Spirits 93 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?This wine performs far beyond its price, offering a floral, red-fruited wine that turns from its meunier flavors of peppery strawberries and darker raspberries to pale chardonnay tones. It's luscious and brassy in the middle, then graceful and crisp in the end. Pour it with a shellfish tower of bulots and crab.?
How Many: 174.95 each

s1123-221. BARON-FUENTE DELORES ROSE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 92 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?Though this is 60 percent chardonnay, the red grapes have more presence in the blend-in fact, it's almost a red wine, with its broad, vinous richness and savory, woodland mushroom tones. The umami depths make it a rosé for fall or winter, to serve with tea-smoked duck. $39.?
How Many: 34.99 each

s1123-222. BRUNO PAILLARD PREMIERE CUVEE EXTRA BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 93 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?One-fifth of this wine fermented in barrels, further enriched by reserve stocks in the blend. The finesse of the bubbles creates a cashmere feel out of that richness, layering toasty notes of age with a spark of freshness in the wine's lime and limestone savor (it has the fossilized oyster-shell impression of a great Chablis). Deliciously complex, it may make you hungry for an oyster. $50.?
How Many: 42.99 each

s1123-223. BRUNO PAILLARD PREMIERE CUVEE ROSE EXTRA BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 94 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?A masterful blend based on pinot noir from Mailly, Verzenay, Bouzy and Les Riceys, this includes reserve wines going back to 1985, as well as a little chardonnay for freshness. It opens with spicy apple-blossom scents followed by a cascade of flavors-juicy hints of strawberries, cherries, raspberries and watermelon-in a bright, complex and dynamic finish. Tiny bubbles help bridge its richness to elegance. $70.?
How Many: 62.95 each

s1123-224. CHARTOGNE-TAILLET SAINTE ANNE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wiine Spectator 92 - Top 100: 'A bright, finely meshed version that shows beautiful harmony throughout, offering flavors of Gala apple, spring forest, almond pastry and lemon curd riding the creamy mousse. Lasting, spiced finish.'
How Many: 49.99 each

s1123-225. DOSNON RECOLTE BRUTE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 93 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?With his vineyards in the Côte des Bar, not far north of Chablis, Davy Dosnon takes a vinous approach to Champagne. He ferments and ages his wines in used barrels from Puligny-Montrachet, blending this wine from pinot noir (70 percent) and chardonnay. It's red fruited from beginning to end, ripe rather than sweet, with oak adding to the wine's savor. Supple, generous and lasting in its deep flavors, this combines power with elegance. $55.?
How Many: 39.99 each

s1123-226. DOSNON RECOLTE ROSE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 93 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?This is all pinot noir, and yet it's significantly more delicate than Dosnon's Brute. The blend includes 40 percent reserve wines and it still emphasizes freshness-floral notes of strawberries, violets and wildflower honey-with some maturity coming through in scents of rose hips, dried fruit and black tea. A clean, fragrant ghost of Burgundy, this is a rosé for roast squab with cranberry stuffing.?
How Many: 54.95 each

s1123-227. J. LASSALLE PREMIER CRU PREFERENCE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 92 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?Focused on pinot meunier (60 percent), the balance equal parts chardonnay and pinot noir, this is aged four years on the lees; this current release includes the 2010 and '09 vintages. It has the freshness and clarity of fragrance that runs through all the Lassalle wines, with a brisk mineral direction to its flavors, finishing firm and clean. $48.?
How Many: 38.99 each

s1123-228. J. LASSALLE PREMIER CRU ROSE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 95 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?This is made in the traditional oeil de perdrix style, prevalent in Champagne before Dom Prrignon and his contemporaries began sorting out the press fractions. The blend includes 85 percent pinot noir, almost all of it direct pressed, producing a wine with the kind of pale pink color that's hard to resist. There's a whisper of tangy, forest-fresh wild strawberries in a brisk, cool springtime scent. The texture is delicate, with creaminess that's light and ethereal.?
How Many: 69.95 each

s1123-229. 02 KRUG MILLESIME BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 100 - Top 100: ?This has the stamina of the 2002 vintage from the first scent, a fragrance like pear skin and butterscotch, and something fresher, like meadow flowers. All of that fragrance comes in a wine that's expansive and dry, almost austere in the power of its acidity. Over the course of several days, the wine remains impervious to the fraying of oxidation, instead building on its flavors, deepening to scents of white truffles. Initially, the power of the acidity not only cleans up after the wine's substantial flavor, but also seems to lash all those notes together and rocket them through a buzz of energy that lasts for minutes. That energy, undiminished four days later, when the bubbles have finally gone, takes on a gentler power, presenting the harmony and elegance at the center of the wine. The 2002 may well be the greatest vintage wine Henri Krug produced during his four-decade career.?
How Many: 259.95 each

s1123-230. L. AUBRY JOUY LES REIMS PREMIER CRU BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 92 - Top 100 Best Buys: ‘This tastes of pure, pale white limestone transformed into crisp yellow apple. It's appetite inducing in its zesty freshness, bright white floral notes and clean, lively length of flavor, especially if there are oysters nearby. The Aubry brothers maintain a reserve wine blend composed of vintages going back to 1998; that blend provides 50 percent of this Brut, with the other half from 2013. The varietal composition is also distinctive: pinot meunier makes up 45 percent, with chardonnay and pinot noir each providing 25 percent and the remaining five percent made up of traditional local varieties including arbanne, petit meslier and fromenteau.?
How Many: 42.99 each

s1123-231. 09 LOUIS ROEDERER PHILIPPE STARCK BRUT NATURE CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 95 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?Musky and muscular, this wine starts out with unforgiving acidity, yielding to the fruit as the structure mellows with air. It's a Champagne to decant or, if you're opposed to losing bubbles, to stopper and revisit as it develops over the course of hours and days. The wine's austerity fills out in notes of almond and honeysuckle, salt and citrus. This is a collaboration between Roederer and French designer Philippe Starck, a blend of pinot noir, meunier and chardonnay grown in the clay soils of Cumières, harvested and fermented together. It's a wine that requires a sunny vintage, as it's produced without malolactic and without dosage.?
How Many: 89.95 each

s1123-232. 11 LOUIS ROEDERER ROSE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 94 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon grows some of the most beautiful rosés in Champagne, focusing on pinot noir in the clay soils of Cumières, and on the careful and precise extraction of color from the skins of the grapes. This is a wine that's discreet in its ripeness, delicate in its fragrance, hinting at roses and the blossoms that will become red fruits. Even so, it's formidable in its flavor depth, and an able partner for rillettes, whether made from salmon or duck. $80.?
How Many: 69.95 each

s1123-233. MARC HEBRART MAREUIL SUR AY PREMIER CRU CUVEE DE RESERVE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 93 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?As Michael Engelmann of The Modern in NYC said, ?If you know about wine, or don't know, this would make you happy. Maybe it's more on the winelover's side.? Maybe that's because it's refreshing: spicy, open and gently brisk. It seems like the perfect oyster wine as it tastes of the sea in the soil. A touch of pink grapefruit, a hint of green spice, an essence of pinot noir (77 percent of the blend).?
How Many: 49.99 each

s1123-234. MARC HEBRART MAREUIL SUR AY PREMIER CRU SELECTION BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 93 - Year?s Best Champagnes: ?A hint of butterscotch over lime pith predicts the richness of this wine. While round and satisfying, it remains youthfully tight. A wave of fruit develops, carried along on powerful acidity, ending in quiet complexity that will only be furthered by age. Refreshing with clams or Belon oysters on the half shell.?
How Many: 54.95 each

s1123-235. PIERRE MONCUIT LE MESNIL GRAND CRU MONCUIT-DELOS BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 94 - Top 100 Best Buys: ?Nicole Moncuit makes this wine from a single harvest in her Mesnil vineyards, fermenting it in stainless steel and allowing it to undergo malolactic fermentation. We tasted the current vintage, 2012, blind, on the same panel with the 2004 Salon, and though the wines were separated by 17 others, these were the two standouts and I retasted them side by side. The Moncuit showed length and delicacy, if not the same grandeur and complexity. As one taster noted, 'It's Mesnil-y.' That might translate into a floral lemon, Kaffir lime and chalk character, presented as density of flavor without weight. The wine's precision and effortless integration make it a steal at the price.?
How Many: 52.95 each

s1123-236. 06 SALON LE MESNIL GRAND CRU BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine Enthusiast 100 - Top 100 Cellar Selections; 'This new release from a great vintage for Chardonnay in Champagne is a perfect blanc de blancs, showing a wealth of intensity from the crisp, chalky, mineral tones to the perfumed apple notes. The aromas hint at developing toastiness that adds depth and complexity. The wine is still young and it will age for years. Drink from 2020. $617.'
