WT103112-01. 11 TREBBIANO D’ABRUZZO DA MA, MARRAMIERO - (ITALY) 12%. A fine and full trebbiano, up to the quality and amplitude of the 2010. Deep apple and peel scents./ Rich taste and feel. As full as it gets, short of Valentini’s $75 version. Nice touch of cream at the end. The group was impressed. 16.4.

WT103112-03. 11 SANCERRE, DOMAINE DAULNY - (FRANCE LOIRE) 12.5%. Wow! Extreme gooseberry. Totally fresh. One of the best vintages of this. Sooo bright!/ Gooseberry and flowers. Just lovely. So crystal clear. Such a precise definition of Sancerre. The group loved it. 17.3.

The right Vinzelles lift and weight./ Nice toast and grain oak and Burgundy chardonnay flavor. Latour fruit and frame and style. Good acid and grip for food. 16.9+.

Real pinot character and plenty of it. The mix of regions talking, adding complexity and entertainment. Long and sweet and lovely finish. Bravo! The group was impressed. 16.7.

So much sweet black and blue fruits, such a complex. And spicy oak too. Wow! Lots of goodies here!/ Young, full, tight, right. Well balanced. Aeration and bottle age will work wonders. 17.0+.

WT103112-13. 09 RIBERA DEL DUERO TEMPRANILLO TAMIZ, BODEGAS REYES - (SPAIN) In the afternoon, firm RDD style even though the bottle was opened yesterday. Good, clear RDD tempranillo expression comes through thanks to no oak excesses. Later, in the evening, lovely, perfectly ready to enjoy bouquet. Sweet fruit and oak./ Yes, sweet fruit, good form, fine oak. Open hearted, rangy, forthcoming. Well balanced. The virtues of aeratrion. 16.9.

WT101712-04. 10 ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS WETZEL FAMILY ESTATE ALEXANDER VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S.) 14%. Romantic, perfumed. Sweet berries and potpourri. A complete 2010 beauty./ Some American oak still floats on top. Plenty of fruit support under. Will merge over the coming months. Both oak and fruit tannins. Good sweet-acid balance. Long finish. Well liked by the group, even the Europhiles. 2010 sports Euro-style lines. 17.1+.

Same lines as the 2008 I love, but at an earlier stage of development of course. Good stuff./ Yeah, sweet and elegant fruit and fruit cremes as in the 2008. Balanced and long. Lovely. 16.6+.

WT101712-06. 09 DOURO BARCO NEGRO, FRANCOIS LURTON - (PORTUGAL) 13%. Hearty, husky, and firm as usual. Less of a bear than the 08. Douro sweetness, singed fruit./ Sweeter and softer than usual this vintage Appealing mouthfeel. Aromatics still nascent. Sweet aftertaste. Final vintage of this. 16.0+.

WT101712-07. 09 TOSCANA LAGONE, AIA VECCHIA - (ITALY) 15%. Plenty ripe. Frank and powerful. Full oak expression. Finesse is not a descriptor here./ Good oak seasonings accompanied by sweet fruit as usual. The nose is riper than usual, the palate in tune with the series. Lovely balance of fruit and oak. Long finish. 16.5+.

WT101712-08. 08 SALICE SALENTINO RISERVA, LEONE DE CASTRIS - (ITALY) 13%; since 1665; Salice made since 1954; 90% negroamaro, 10% malvasia nera. Sweet and scorched and right. Long in barrel riserva complex. 08 dark fruit. Sweet, spicy oak./ Yes, dried and sweet fruits, zesty oak, time in barrel development–breadth, depth. Just right. In fact, terrific. 17.1.

WT101712-09. 11 COTES DU ROUSSILLON VILLAGES LES VIGNES DE BILA HAUT, M. CHAPOUTIER - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%. Reduced. Southern Rhone Chapoutier wines often are. And this one’s under cork, not screwcap./ Reduction keeps it pretty flat, lacking in depth and texture. Some good fruit evident, including whole bunch fermentation fragrance. Has hopes for more interest after aeration and time in bottle. 15.8+.

WT101712-10. 10 JIM BARRY THE LODGE HILL CLARE VALLEY SHIRAZ - (AUSTRALIA) 14.5%. Very big, firm, oaky. The oak is attractive. I like its power, poise, and promise./ A complex of ripe fruit and spicy oak. Large presence. Unique and exciting. Good future. And good now with steak off the grill. 16.7+.

Full color and concentration./ Full flavored. Cedar, peach, apricot. Good acid and good fruit confite coating. A complete Mittel Mosel Qba. 17.0+.

WT101012-01. 11 BOWERS HARBOR OLD MISSION PENINSULA PINOT GRIGIO - (U.S.) 12%. Oh, boy, ultra crisp and northern...while conveying some of pinot gris’ innate plumpness too. Apple and pear. Fabulous./ Yeah, both racy and plump. You CAN have it both ways. 16.7.

WT101012-02. 11 MERRYVALE STARMONT NAPA VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC - (U.S.) 13.5%. Both sauvignon crisp and California sauvignon full, as usual./ Yeah! Fabulous display of grass and gooseberry; no grapefruit. Not that I don’t like the grapefruit oriented sauvignons. I just enjoy a departure from this common theme once in awhile. Full and right. No excess alcohol, power, or heat as in many a California sauvignon. Even the Europhiles were impressed. 16.9.

WT101012-03. 10 BOURGOGNE, BERTRAND AMBROISE - (FRANCE BOURGOGNE) 13%. Under screwcap, this starts out reduced. Aeration works wonders. Now full fruit, full pinot character./ Yes, fruity, spicy, smoky, tarry. Good oak. A most fulfilled 2010 Bourgogne pinot noir. Good future too. 16.8+.

WT101012-04. 07 LANGHE ANNA, BOROLI - (ITALY) 13%; 51% barbera, 37% nebbiolo, 12% merlot. Working into a mellow maturity. Good, dark fruited barbera constitution with dab of nebbiolo tar./ An harmonious balance of the constituent varieties. Sweet, vital, very bright in flavor and texture. Will continue to improve. 16.6+.

WT101012-07. 08 TERRA ALTA LUDOVICUS, CELLER PINOL - (SPAIN) 13.5%; 35% garnacha, 30% tempranillo, 25% syrah, 10% cabernet sauvignon; vineyards at 1200 feet. Lovely warmth of development. Fine oak complex too. Sweet, suave, savory fruit complex./ Wow! Rich and savory fruit and oak. Good acid. Retains a great deal of freshness and brightness as it evolves to bouquet and mellowness. 16.9.

Classic Espigouette!/ Oh, boy, peppercorn and garrigue all over the place. With fine acid and tannin. Out of sight. 17.4+.

WT101012-09. 10 NINE STONES BAROSSA SHIRAZ - (AUSTRALIA) 14%. Ripe, dark, spicy, oaky, sweet, deep, smoky. This is Barossa shiraz./ Yeah, smoky and ripe fruit of 2010. Well balanced. Classic Nine Stones Barossa cuvee. 16.6+.

WT101012-10. 07 CARAVEL OUTCAST NAPA VALLEY ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) 14.3%. Ripe and sassy. Not Napa elegant; too big and bold for that. Powerful, roti fruit. Good oak./ Sweet vanilla oak. Sweet and good fruit. Not typical Napa zin. Made for fans of big zins. Long, powerful, textured. Fine tannin. Great follow through. Fulfills its intended role if not its terroir. 17.2+.

WT101012-12. MACKINAW TRAIL MICHIGAN STRAWBERRY - (U.S.) 12.5%. Sweet, syrupy nose. Not very intense in strawberry aroma. But a genuine fruit aroma, not a lab generated one./ An odd tarry component. Lacks fruit purity and intensity. Not what I’m looking for. 13.5.

Stone and tropical fruits presented in a subtle manner. Full bodied./ Yes, full, nutty. Poached peach. Full texture and range. At a good stage. 17.0.

WT100312-03. 10 LANGUEDOC BLANC, DOMAINE DE NIZAS - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%; 40% roussanne, 36% rolle, 18% viognier. Good form and fragrance. Each of the three aromatic varieties makes a statement. This works./ Some viognier and rolle (vermentino) bitter relief. Full. Dry. Made for food. 16.1.

WT100312-05. 10 CUPCAKE CENTRAL COAST PINOT NOIR - (U.S.) 13.5%; cherry cupcake with currant coulis. Nice and racy 2010 Central Coast pinot without tea, herb, or tartness. Cherry and toast. Pie crust./ Flows nicely. Sweet enough pinot fruit coupled with 2010 race. Love it! 16.3.

WT100312-06. 10 J. LOHR FALCON’S PERCH MONTEREY PINOT NOIR - (U.S.) 13.5%; cherry, rose petal, white pepper, toasted oak. Classic Monterey cool cherry, tea, and tar. Nice oak toast. Sweet as a nut./ Good race, coolness, astringency. Vigorous and balanced. Works. 16.4+.

WT100312-07. 10 CHATEAU ST. JEAN SIGNATURE CALIFORNIA RED - (U.S.) 13.8%; cabernet sauvignon, merlot, zinfandel, petite sirah, syrah, malbec; blackberry, mocha, spice. Oak stands out. Suggests oak in wine rather than wine in oak. Sweet fruit support–especially sweet for the vintage. Some tart fruit in the background too./ Yeah, this is woody, but not overly. Some wood tannin. Sweet and tart fruit. OK juice. Better after the oak settles in. 15.9+.

Round and sweet and alluring. Just right./ Good fruit sweetness, oak toast, 2011 acidity. This carries itself well...right to the table. 16.3.

A great face of 08 and barbera. Tar, peel, and anise accents. Lovely./ Rough and rugged 08 barbera texture. Great acid, feel, audacity. Right for the table. Lovely value! 16.5.

Sweet Midi syrah leads the way. Some peppercorn and bouquet development./ Open armed, sweet, spicy. Some garrigue herbs. Good stuff. 16.4.
