WT111319-03. 18 COTES DU RHONE BLANC, DOMAINE DE L'ESPIGOUETTE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13%. Zesty, peppery, snappy, ringing. If there's viognier here, it doesn't perfume up the aroma much. The other, low key southern Rhone white varieties hold forth. Apple, acacia./ Yes, a classic southern Rhone white varietal set stressing vinosity over perfume. 16.5.

Retains good freshness while beginning to show the spread of bottle bouquet./ Yes, elements of freshness and development combined with full body make this a natural at the table. Plenty of texture too. 16.4.

WT111319-06. 18 MOSEL ESTATE RIESLING OLD VINES, WEINGUT NIK WEIS ST. URBANS-HOF - (GERMANY) 11%. Sulphur; H2S, mercaptan to start./ Yes, sulphur on the front palate too. Doesn't scratch though. After aeration, sweet riesling fruit wells up, and good acidity is apparent. Decant vigorously before serving. 12.0

Firm, fine tannin. Great acid. Balanced. Enjoy now with food, and cellar some a few months for complete tannin resolution. 17.1.

More intense than the fine 2016 even./ Yes, lush and velvety, intense and thorough. Fine tannin. Full texture and flavor. What a noble grape variety in the right hands! 17.1.

WT111319-11. 17 GNARLY HEAD 1924 LIMITED EDITION DOUBLE BLACK BOURBON BARREL AGED LODI CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S. WEST COAST) 15%. Sweet, and a bit thick and murky. Big though./ More clarity on the palate. Big time oak contributions: vanilla, char, bourbon leachings. 16.0/16.6.

WT111319-12. 16 RIOJA TEMPRANILLO COSECHA VINA ZACO, BODEGAS BILBAINAS - (SPAIN) 14%. Say, this is much more intense and fully packed than anticipated. Deep, dark, rich fruit and plenty of barrel time impact./ Yes, great concentration, varietal character, and barrel suavity, complexity. Yes, back to the old basics here. 16.7+.

WT111319-13. 15 LISBOA RESERVA CONFIDENCIAL, CASA SANTOS LIMA - (PORTUGAL) 13.5%; Wine Enthusiast 91/100. Fresh, firm, medium bodied. Not as sweet and oaky on the nose as the 14. Strange, since 15 is the riper vintage. Probably because sampled at an earlier stage. Plenty of intensity and presence nonetheless./ The palate is sweeter and woodier. Great flavor, texture, balance, give. And length. 16.3

WT111319-15. 07 CATALUNYA GRAN RESERVA, ALTOS D'OLIVA - (SPAIN) 14%; 45% tempranillo, 40% cabernet sauvignon, 15% garnacha. Wonderful rich fruit and bottle bouquet savor. Deep, complex, and sweet fruited. Age has not dried it up a bit./ Nice combo of freshness and age. Not as advanced as the 2005. This will carry on. 16.7+.

WT110619-02. 18 VOUVRAY CUVEE DE SILEX DOMAINE DES AUBUISIERES, BERNARD FOUQUET - (FRANCE LOIRE) 13.5%. Quince, lime, and melon aromas of Loire chenin. Calcaire etches the nostrils. Spot on./ Near dry. If there is a touch of 'sec tendre' residual sweetness, it's well buffered by racy acidity and clinging extract. Another winner in this series. 17.0+.

WT110619-04. 17 MOSEL RIESLING KABINETT TROCKEN CAI, IMMICH-BATTERIEBERG - (GERMANY) 10.5%. This is very full for a Mosel, dry and slatey in the estate style./ Surrounding a tender, sweet-fruited riesling core is a lot of slate derived extract giving a walnut husk impression. This really is a big Mosel riesling, classic to the Immich style. 16.7+.

WT110619-05. 17 CHATEAU FONTAINE LEELANAU PENINSULA PINOT GRIS - (U.S. MICHIGAN) Good, northern pinot gris tingle with just the right degree of peels extract. Cool, and lightly padded. Well done./ Yes, flavors of melon, peach, and nut. Light residual sweetness countered by racy acidity. An easy quaffer. 16.5.

WT110619-06. 15 ALSACE PINOT GRIS IM BERG DOMAINE SAINT REMY, EHRHART - (FRANCE ALSACE) 13%; at Wettolsheim. Fuller, more powerful, more aged. Very pungent indeed./ Full bodied. Lots of peach, melon, nut. Plenty of texture. Will improve. 16.7+.

WT110619-07. 13 ALSACE PINOT GRIS IM BERG DOMAINE SAINT REMY, EHRHART - (FRANCE ALSACE) 13%; dry. More mature, earthier phase of pinot gris./ Glycerol countered by a nice grip of acid and extract. More good things to come here too. 16.3+.

WT110619-08. 18 FIRESTEED WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR - (U.S. West COAST) 14.1%. Very crisp style of the maker. Sweet enough Oregon pinot though. Very snappy and spicy./ Well, the palate betrays unintegrated oak, suggestive of the use of oak chips. This renders it awkward . Some heat on the finish. Too bad after a promising nose. 16.3/15.4.

WT110619-09. 17 LA MANCHA TEMPRANILLO SANGRE DE TORO, TORRES - (SPAIN) 13.5%. Smooth, gentle, middle of the road negociant's La Mancha tempranillo. Pleasing enough, but the local estates' tempranillos have more character and distinction./ Sweet southern tempranillo with some rustic tannin at closing. Good enough. 15.5.

WT110619-10. 17 LANGHE ROSSO, AZ. AGR. G. D. VAJRA - (ITALY) 13.5%; nebbiolo, dolcetto, barbera, albarossa, freisa, pinot nero. Sweet, involved, complicated presentation of multi Piemonte varieties that all work together adeptly. One of those 'whole greater than sum of the parts' things./ Great acid for food. Dash of VA for verve. Some fine tannin for texture. I've enjoyed many vintages of this. I think this is the first one I've presented to my weekly panel. They enjoyed it immensely. 16.5.

Robust, spicy, warm, pushy, sweet smelling. As intended./ Yes, sweet and strong. Good balance of all the elements. There's certainly a market for this, especially to serve with meat off the grill. 16.3.

WT110619-12. 18 VAL DU CHARRON APHAEA CELLARMASTER'S RESERVE WESTERN CAPE RED - (SOUTH AFRICA) 13.5%; 44% syrah, 28% mourvedre, 22% grenache, 8% tinta barocca. Cool, racy black fruits. Sweet fruited and rangy thanks to the mix of varieties./ Appropriately medium bodied. Spiced meat accents; a range of peppercorn colors. Hint of rosemary. Wide appeal here. 16.1+.

One large scaled Plan de Dieu from the hands of a Gigondas estate's winemaker. Zesty peppercorns and warm spices./ Sweetness, ripeness, and power met head on by vigorous acidity. Young and ambitious. 16.7+.

WT110619-14. 17 ARTEZIN OLD VINE MENDOCINO ZINFANDEL - (U.S. WEST COAST) 14.8%; aged in French oak barrels. Extremely dark fruited paean to Mendocino zinfandel. Sweet fruit and plenty of barrel seasonings. In form./ Oh, boy, and total Mendocino zinfandel acidity too. Full, rich, flavorful, balanced. Spot on example as always. 17.0+.

WT110619-15. 17 ANCIENT PEAKS SANTA MARGARITA RANCH ZINFANDEL - (U.S. WEST COAST) 15%. Wow, full Paso sweetness, with a vigorous impact of spices. Loaded, powerful, full of Paso fruit goodness./ The power is balanced by the fruit sweetness. Light oak influence. Overall, a high impact zinfandel. Great to have this pair side by side. Zinfandel definitely reflects its terroir, as Ridge Vineyards discovered decades back. 17.2+.
