WT053012-04. 10 VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO, VAGNONI - (ITALY) 13.5%. H2S stink. Too bad./ Sulphur shuts it town. Dull. Bites. Not much better half an hour later. Aerate the hell out of it. Try a blender. 9.5++.
WT053012-05. 11 SALMON CREEK CALIFORNIA PINOT NOIR - (U.S.) 12.5%. Bright and real pinot. Crisp 11 style. Right./ 11 tart yet adequately fulfilled. Tart cherry. No tea, tar. All fruit. Not for beginners like a riper vintage. Good food wine though. 15.7+..
WT053012-06. 09 SANTENAY, JOSEPH DROUHIN - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%. Well, thereís a basis of good Burgundian pinot and 09 grandeur lurking down inside, but this wine too is marred by H2S. Blots out the village ID./ Hard, hard, hard. From sulphur and what else? Itís not too tannic. Itís not peels astringent. Just extremely obdurate. Drouhinís is a firm style, but this is excessive and soís the sulphur. 14.0++.
WT053012-07. 10 CHINON LES MORINIERES, JOSEPH MELLOT - (FRANCE LOIRE) 12.5%; on clay and limestone. 10 tight and crisp. Loire cool take on cabernet franc. All fruit though; no veggie./ Tight and crisp. Tart berries. Needs time. Popular with the group. 15.6++.
WT053012-08. 09 CHATEAU BARTHEZ, HAUT MEDOC - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13.5%; at Le Pian in the south; partner with Chateau de Malleret. Good oak and bright, woodsy fruit of southern Haut Medoc cabernet. 09 fruit quality. Upscale for Barthez; best Iíve had since the old days./ Dry and closed. Quite a bit of tannin to shed.. Needs time. The nose foretells a good future.16.3+.
WT053012-09. 10 GUENOC VICTORIAN NORTH COAST CLARET - (U.S.) 13.5%. Good, full oak and fine North Coast cabernet expression. Subtle toast and caramel barrel notes. 10 offers good restraint and gives claret-like posture to a cuvee that traditionally stresses moderation and elegance anyway./ Kinda on the 10 crisp side; nonetheless, accomplished. A pleasing vanilla note. More Euro than usual in 2010. Attractive and meal-worthy. 16.3+.
WT053012-10. 08 COTES DE PROVENCE - SAINTE VICTOIRE, DOMAINE HOUCHART - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%; owned by the Quiot family of Chateauneuf du Pape. Cool, fresh, ventilating Provencal herb notes, including rosemary. Some 08 darkness, tarriness./ Yeah, 08 tight and black. Needs time to mellow out. Will likely never be as plush as the 07. Thatís OK. Chacun a son gout. 14.0+.
WT053012-11. 09 CHIANTI CLASSICO, CARPINETO - (ITALY) 13%; 90% sangiovese, 10% canaiolo; aged 6 months in oak casks. Lovely, ideally balanced dried fruit and oak. Perfect composition./ Again, that perfect marriage of dried cherry and oak. Good acid, fine tannin. A hallmark example of Chianti Classico. 17.0+.
WT053012-12. 09 LA MANCHA TEMPRANILLO, BODEGAS CAMPOS REALES - (SPAIN) 13.5%; from the heart of the La Mancha plateau. Sweet, spicy, baked, rangy./ Sweet and ripe fruit. Palate generous if less rangy than the nose. Really delivers for the price. 16.0..
WT053012-13. 10 COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES CUVEE DES SEIGNEURS, DOMAINE DU VIEUX CHENE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN ) 14%; half each grenache, syrah. Firm and a bit reduced. Tight laced as usual./ Sweet but tight. Always that way in youth. I guess it will fill out; have never tasted an older bottle. 15.8+..
WT053012-14. 07 JUMILLA MONASTRELL-SYRAH ALCENO, PEDRO LUIS MARTINEZ - (SPAIN) 13.5%; 60-40; aged 4 months in French and US oak barrels. Full. Nice treacly aroma of barrel age. Very suave and enticing. Sweet oak./ Again, lovely oak and time in barrel influence. Nice and alluring. Good price. 16.7.
WT053012-15. 09 WINE GUERRILLA SONOMA ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) 14.5%; by David Coffaro. Brilliant display of raspberry, peppercorn, and oak seasonings. Just right Sonoma zin. Crisp fruit edge./ Again, a big burst of classic Sonoma zinfandel flavors. Wow! Great buy. 17.4.
WT053012-16. 06 VOUVRAY LA LANTERNE DEMI-SEC, GUILBAUD FRERES - (FRANCE LOIRE) 12%. Lovely chenin quince. And late harvest Vouvray macaroon! Yes! Very fresh, with just a light veneer of bottle development. Astonishing freshness for 5+ years of age./ Yes, semi sweet and enticing. A unique touch of wild cherry candy in the back. Amazingly youthful, and well poised for full bottle bouquet development. 17.0+.
WT053012-17. DOWíS FINE WHITE PORTO - (FORTIFIED) 19%; since 1798. Good and full and strong and nutty. Just right. Lovely served cool. Much fresher than some of the Portuguese brandsí versions./ Yeah, sweet and strong and nutty. Perfectly balanced. Wow! Best white porto Iíve tasted in a long while. 17.2.

WT052312-04. 10 VOUVRAY DEMI-SEC, GUILBAUD FRERES - (FRANCE LOIRE) 12%. Very fresh melon nose, with apple and lime too. Sings. Soars./ Semi sweet. Well balanced. Delicious melon, lime, and apple flavors. Right 16.7.
WT052312-05. 11 TAVEL, CHATEAU DE TRINQUEVEDEL - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%; vignoble Demoulin. Good and big and sweet and fruity. A champ in all respects./ Full. Some peels grip of youthful Tavel. An ager. 16.7+.

A little sulphur hindered. Fine youthful carignan cherry finale. Air and age; itís worth the effort. 16.0+

Sweet and ripe, glycerol coated grenache of 10. Warm strawberry scent comes on./ Hints of garrigue forming. Young. Good acid, fine tannin. 16.3+.

Wow! Deep and sweet and racy red fruit. Fabulous take on cinsault rouge./ Wow, sweet and full and flavorful. Fruit and spice. 16.7+.

WT052312-14. 09 CRISTOBAL 1492 MENDOZA TORRONTES - (ARGENTINA) 13%; less 30% = $5.94. Maintains varietal character and intensity. Lovely lady at mid age./ Yes, fresh, and floral, fruity. Nice and useful. Orange juice aftertaste. 16.1.

WT051612-01. 11 COTES DE GASCOGNE, DOMAINE DES CASSAGNOLES - (FRANCE - BORDEAUX ) 12%. Colombard, ugni blanc, gros manseng. Full, fresh, and right. Some sauvignon blanc like aspects. Grass, gooseberry, pear, mango./ Nice sweet-tart play. Very flavorful. Lots of acid spiel. Long and juicy. Best in memory. 16.8.
WT051612-02. 10 LUGANA LIMNE, TENUTA ROVEGLIA - (ITALY) 12.5%; Limne is a Ďpremier cruí zone mentioned by Roman poet Catullo 2000 years ago. Lime and tangerine. Tingle and edge. Good and concentrated while remaining cool and refreshing./ Rich and full as Luganas go. Really concentrated. Yet thereís plenty of raciness too. Long and well balanced aftertaste. Fine. Clearly one of the best of its genre. 17.1.
WT051612-03. 08 SUTTER HOME CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY - (U.S. ) 13%; since 1890; less 30% = $4.54. Some grain, cow piss, citrus peel of aging New World chardonnay. Still useful./ Soft but not sweet. Smooth. Balanced. Yes, useful. 14.7.
WT051612-04. 10 GREENHOUGH NELSON SAUVIGNON BLANC - (NEW ZEALAND) 13.5%; since 1991. Yow! Total grapefruit and basil. Intense, brisk, fresh, full. Really, I wouldnít want to see this any younger. It might ring my bell instead of my chimes./ Yes, total flavor concentration and vigor too. Dry yet padded with glycerol. Long aftertaste with ringing acidity. The ultimate. 17.6.
WT051612-05. 11 RIOJA ROSE, BODEGAS MUGA - (SPAIN ) 13%; since 1932. Rich and strong as usual. Strawberry grenache rose aroma. Big, frank, forceful, and lovely. For food./ Yes, full berry flavor. Still some banana fermentation flavor. Great acid and astringency. Long. This will carry through winter. 16.6+.
WT051612-06. 10 A TO Z OREGON PINOT NOIR - (U.S. ) 13%; founded by former Ann Arborite and VC customer, Bill Hatcher. Leafy and tea like. Bright and true. Some tar./ Tarry, leafy, tart fruited. Needs some time to fatten up. 14.0+.
WT051612-07. 10 MARK WEST CALIFORNIA PINOT NOIR - (U.S.) 13.8%; since 1978; aged 8 months in French and Hungarian oak. Much sweeter than the OR pinot. Cherry and nut, with bright 10 acidity. A good vintage for this./ Sweet cherry and nut. Some oak caramel. Some inland sweet fruit as well as coastal acidity. A little less intense than the 09. Satisfies though. Takes the best of 10. 16.2.
WT051612-08. 10 VARNER FOXGLOVE PASO ROBLES CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S.) 14.5%. Itís always crisp, dry, and clarety for Paso. In 10, itís extremely crisp. Raw black currant./ High acid is the initial impression, followed by a core of sweet inner fruit. Racy. Fine tannin. Well crafted in the house and vintage style. Paso delivers ripe enough cabernet fruit in 2010. 16.2+.
WT051612-09. 09 NAPA CELLARS NAPA VALLEY ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) 14.5%; blackberry, strawberry jam, cinnamon, black pepper, sweet oak. Sweet black and red fruits. Oak toast and butterscotch./ Full of both fruit and oak expressions. The usual sweet, bold style. Calls for sweet BBQ sauce. 16.7.
WT051612-10. 11 ROBERTSON WINERY SPECIAL LATE HARVEST ROBERTSON GEWURZTRAMINER - (SOUTH AFRICA ) 12%; since 1941. Sweet and rosy. Some reduction yet under screwcap still but less so than 2010. Ginger and tonic too./ Yes, sweet and honeyed. Some botrytis. Mild acidity of gewurz but good light gewurz astringency as a foil to the sweetness. Very good now and will get better as it airs and ages. 16.7+.
WT051612-11. PEDRO ROMERO FULL DRY OLOROSO SHERRY - (FORTIFIED) 18%; since 1860. Wow! Full dry. Extreme nuttiness. Powerful, penetrating. Sweet date-nut. Long in cooperage. Near perfect./ Dry, with nut, wood, glycerol, quality spirit. A food sherry for sure. The best under-$12 bottle of wine Iíve tasted in a long, long while. 17.8.

WT050912-01. FREIXENET CORDON NEGRO SELECCION EXTRA DRY CAVA - (SPARKLKING) 12%. Pleasant, doughy bouquet. Fine mousse./ Attractively soft and really pretty dry for Ďextra dryí. This is much improved and a pleasant surprise. 16.2.
WT050912-02. 10 ELK COVE WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT GRIS - (US) 13%. Full melon, apple, nut, peach./ Viscous. Melon, apple, both peels, and nuts. Good body, glycerol. Well balanced. Continues the tradition. 16.5.
WT050912-03. 10 VOUVRAY, CHAMPALOU - (FRANCE LOIRE) 12.5% Good quince nose of dry Vouvray chenin. Young, well composed, well poised./ A really dry vintage of this, or itís Champalouís trend. Not much Ďtendreí to this at all. Lovely structure, makeup. Long melon and quince aftertaste. 17.0+.
WT050912-04. 11 VAL DE LOIRE SAUVIGNON BLANC DESTINEA, JOSEPH MELLOT - (FRANCE LOIRE) 12%. Wow! Really catty. Thereís basil too./ Fresh, crisp, young. Rightly aggressive. Bitter yet. But it hurts so good! 16.3+.
WT050912-05. 09 FAIRVIEW LA CAPRA COASTAL REGION SAUVIGNON BLANC - (SOUTH AFRICA) 13.5%; less 30% = $7.69. Full, dried citrus peel aroma of mature sauvignon blanc. Fresh acid on the nose. Useful./ Yes, cool. This is good and mealworthy. 15.6.
WT050912-07. 11 MONTSANT MAS DONIS ROSAT, CELLER DE CAPCANES - (SPAIN) 13%; 80% grenache, 10% each syrah, merlot. Lovely, sweet grenache strawberry, with syrah raspberry and merlot cherry in the supporting cast. Fabulous./ Flavorful. Good dryness. Some peels bitterness at the end makes a nice twist. 16.1.
WT050912-09. 09 BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR, PAUL BOUCHARD - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%. Sweet but tight and real 09 style of Bourgogne pinot. Some H2S still, so it lacks 3-D./ Yeah, sulphur still an issue Peels extract too. 15.4+.
WT050912-10. 09 24 KNOTS CENTRAL COAST PINOT NOIR - (US) 13.4%. Sweet and clearly California. The pinot cherry is real. Some oak./ Sweet and smooth California style. Some Central Coast green herb and cool climate tart cherry. OK, but the price is a little high. 15.9.
WT050912-11. 10 COLUMBIA CREST H3 LES CHEVAUX HORSE HEAVEN HILLS RED - (US) 14.5%. Nice sweet oak to complement WA crisp black fruit, making for a balanced presentation. Well crafted./ The oak is caramelly and up front. Will be popular. Kudos. 16.6.
WT050912-13. 11 COTES DU RHONE, CHATEAU DE SEGRIES - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14%; Henri de Lanzac, proprietor; at Lirac. Young and a little underripe, though, surprisingly, others thought overripe. Close and tart. Time?/ Yeah, tart and lean. Released before its time? Probably should take another look at this one in a month or so. 14.9+.
WT050912-14. 09 BONNY DOON CONTRA OLD VINE FIELD BLEND CENTRAL COAST RED - (US) 13.5%; mainly carignan. Sweet and rugged carignan with glycerol too. Legit for the price./ More fruit and force to the palate. Good acid, balance. Overall good palate that makes a fine food wine. 16.3+.
WT050912-15. 09 MONTSANT MAS DONIS OLD VINES BARRICA, CELLER DE CAPCANES - (SPAIN) 14%; 85% grenache, 15% syrah; aged 9 months in French and American oak barrels. The right high altitude coolness, grenache sweetness, nice oak seasoning. Perfect posture./ Young. Good acid. Good balance of fruit, oak. Monsant restraint. 16.5+.
WT050912-16. LAMBRUSCO DELLí EMILIA DOLCE, UMBERTO CAVICCHIOLI - (ITALY) 7.5%; since 1928. Fizzy and a bit edgy./ Sweet and straight-forward, common fare. 14.0.

WT050212-01. 10 GAVI DI GAVI, LUIGI TACCHINO - (ITALY) 12.5%. Nice floral overtones. Sage too. Understated. Not overtly fruity./ Great acid ring. Sage and other Mediterranean herbs. Lots of texture, fine grip. Long finish. 16.9.
WT050212-02. 11 NAVARRA VIURA-CHARDONNAY VEGA SINDOA, BODEGAS NEKEAS - (SPAIN) 13%; 75-25; from the northernmost winegrowing district of Navarra, half an hour south of Pamplona. Still some SO2. Viura fruit and perfume under./ Too much sulphur for full pleasure. Constricts the palate. Air and age. Others enjoyed it, so maybe aeration was already doing its work. My sensitivity to sulphur and the work of the Taster glass
always accentuate it. 14.0++
WT050212-03. 10 MACON CHARNAY FRANCLIEU, JEAN MANCIAT - (FRANCE) 14%. Lots of 10 peel extract and coolness, and also lush Villages intensity. Light oak?/ Yes, oak vanilla, toffee. A little much for the fruit component at present, but pleasant enough overall. And it will settle in over the coming months. Soft on the approach as 2010s go. Some malo undertaken? 16.5.
WT050212-04. 07 SKETCHBOOK MENDOCINO CHARDONNAY - (US) 13.5%; less 30% = $11.19. Oak and the citrus peel sign of aging California chardonnay. Still a good drink./ Yeah, this works yet. Oak, fruit, buttered toast. Balanced. 16.1.
WT050212-05. 10 CHATEAU DUCASSE, BORDEAUX - (FRANCE) 12%. Either some sulphur still or semillon going into its mid age funk. Thereís not a lot of fruit on the nose at this stage./ Good, rich semillon fruit on the palate though, with sauvignon edge. Great texture, extract, and fruit follow-through. Give it some time to settle its aroma affairs. 16.2++.
WT050212-06. 11 SHERWOOD MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC - (NEW ZEALAND) 13%. Big charge of mango and grapefruit surges forth./ Yow! Sweet and tart and vigorous and lively. Great follow-though. 16.9+.
WT050212-08. 10 RODNEY STRONG RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY PINOT NOIR - (US) 14.5%; toasty vanilla, rose petal, red cherry. Fine, cool 10 tea and dark cherry. Great year for this. Fine oak toast. Wow!/ Yeah, cool, crunchy cherry taste. Light toast and caramel. Great acid. And length. 17.0.

WT050212-10. 09 BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR RESERVE, BOUCHARD PERE - (FRANCE) 13%. So much sweeter fruit than the 08. Tense and crisp. Deep and classy. Well framed./ Good structure and rich filling. Bourgogne pinot cherry and rose. Full bodied, well textured. 16.6+.

WT050212-12. 08 BLACKSTONE WINEMAKERíS SELECT CALIFORNIA MERLOT - (US) 13.5%; less 30% = $6.99. Advanced prune and raisin smells./ However, the palate is OK. Good oak and fruit sweetness. Yes, an enjoyable palate. 13/15.
WT050212-13. 09 PIC SAINT LOUP, CHATEAU LA ROQUE - (FRANCE) 13.5%. Oh, boy, big, black syrah like fruit, with peppercorn, spices, and garrigue. Dynamic young Pic Saint Loup./ Full texture and flavor. Well balanced. A lot to offer right now and plenty more in reserve. 17.0+.
WT050212-14. 07 BAROLO, VILLA ROSA - (ITALY) 14%. Old time baked nebbiolo aroma, well evolved already. Long in cooperage. Sweetness and glycerol. This all works, actually./ Traditional, baked, sweet, and valid. High acid of nebbiolo. Full but fine tannin. Yeah, this works. Valid form of Barolo, and price-worthy. 16.6+.
WT050212-15. 09 CASTLE ROCK MENDOCINO ZINFANDEL - (US) 13.5%; blackberry, raspberry, plum, pepper, spice, earth. Fine apple-raspberry-cranberry zinfandel set like many a Dry Creek Valley version./ Very sweet, especially for Mendocino. I like it. 16.3.
