And the old meal, grain, and cow piss nose of a white Burgundy fifty years back./ Yeah! Mealy Meursault type. Old fashioned. Viscous, strong, unique. Big time material. 17.0+

WT032812-05. 10 VENEZIE PINOT NOIR DUE TORRI, CESARI - (ITALY) 12.5%. Pinot sweet, cool, and pretty. Cranberry and purple plum notes of a cool zone and vintage. Now some sweet pinot cherry coming forth./ Wow! Black and white pepper as well as sweet fruit. Complex. Good acid. This is special! And another bargain! 16.3.

WT032812-07. 10 CHATEAU PICAU PERNA, SAINT EMILION - (FRANCE) 14%. Still 2010 firm and inelegant. Full of 2010 material though. Some barrel time contributes toast and caramel notes./ Yes, firm, but not overly tannic. Rounded by glycerol and oak vanillin. Good mid term ager. 16.4+.

WT032812-08. 09 PAUL DOLAN MENDOCINO CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (US) 14.5%; organically grown. Strong, dark, and 09 firm. Peels, including some green peels. Vanilla oak out of synch with the fruit./ Sweet fruit plus warm spices. Good Mendocino acidity. A bit fluid. The 07 was better. Not tannic, but narrow. 16.2.

Lavishly embellished with open, sweet oak. Love cherry fruit tones too. A bold monastrell from the deep south./ Yeah, warm spices and other empyreumatic delights including treacle and brown sugar. Big time, demonstrative, bold red wine. 17.0+.

WT032812-12. 10 SHENANDOAH VINEYARDS SPECIAL RESERVE AMADOR ZINFANDEL - (US) 14.5%; blackberry, cherry, cocoa. The usual light, sweet red fruit display. Cranberry. Easy going. Primeur style./ Sweet and readily flowing. One of the richer, riper renditions. Spicy too. Cooling aftertaste. Too easy! 16.1.

WT032812-13. 09 CARTLIDGE & BROWNE LAKE COUNTY ZINFANDEL - (US) 14.2%; blackberry, cherry, baking spices, leather, sweet oak. Green fruit. Doesn’t read Lake County zinfandel. Dark, strong, and harsh. Some oak caramel./ Narrow, low in fruit concentration, hard. Hopefully, this will broaden out. 14.0+?

WT032812-14. 10 FLONHEIMER ADELBERG SILVANER, WEINKELLER ERBACH liter - (GERMANY) 10%. Some H2S reduction. Appley silvaner fruit under. Sweet nose. Baked apple./ Sweet and clear of sulphur on the palate. Well balanced. Plenty of fruit expression for silvaner. Easy to like. 16.1+.

WT032812-15. 10 MOSEL RIESLING MONCHHOF, ROBERT EYMAEL - (GERMANY) 8%; since 1177. Bright, crisp 2010 showing some malic acid green apple. And some evolution already./ A bit sweet and thick and off balanced. Mushy apple taste. May be at a bad stage. 15.9+?

WT032812-16. 10 RHEINGAU RIESLING, WEINKELLER ERBACH liter - (GERMANY) 10.5%. Like the Flonheimer, some H2S under screwcap. Clears quickly to show golden Rheingau sweetmeal aromas and mineral race. Then goes deep and even more minerally. One of the best years of this./ Again, some H2S to start. Rich and well etched texture. Well balanced and full of richness. Good year here. Give it plenty of aeration for full appreciation. 16.4.

WT032812-17. 08 MOSEL RIESLING BUTTERFLY HALBTROCKEN, ZILLIKEN - (GERMANY) 11.5%. Rich and well bouqueted. Honey and gorse./ Dry palate; must be low in the halbtrocken sweetness range. Maturing. The early 08 grip has loosened now. 15.7.

WT032112-01. 10 BOURGOGNE ALIGOTE, DOMAINE GOISOT - (FRANCE) 12.5%. Fresh and right. Less extract than the 08. Similarly styled northern aligote./ Softer than the 08 but not without grip. Good example. 16.2+.

WT032112-02. 09 SAINT BRIS FIE GRIS CORPS DE GARDE, DOMAINE GOISOT - (FRANCE) 12.7%. That sneaky intensity of 09. Gooseberry and some stone fruit. A sauvignon gris confident of its future./ Full with gris stone fruit and...wow...a dash of fresh ground white pepper. Unique and attractive. 09 beguile. 16.7+.

WT032112-03. 10 MEDITERRANEE ELICIO, RAPHAEL TROULLIER - (FRANCE) 13%; passion fruit, lychee, sweet pear, citrus. I get the sweet pear and citrus; not the first two. Behind a sulphur veil./ Still some fermentation banana aroma. The wine is aromatic but nebulous at this stage. Certainly no terroir. 15.7+?

WT032112-04. 09 COTE DE BEAUNE VILLAGES, ROUX PERE - (FRANCE) 13%. Well, now here’s a bellringer. Light-medium color./ Then the nose. Shows why you never judge a pinot noir by its color. Abundant and real Beaune pinot reddness, richness, softness. And depth./ Cherry, pit, peel edge. Flows and entices. Fine, fine tannin. Good acid. This is real Burgundy pinot noir the likes of which is inimitable. 16.9+

WT032112-05. 09 CHINON, DOMAINE DES FAMILLE ROUET - (FRANCE) 12.5%; 6-generation family estate at Chezelet - Cravant les Coteaux. Deep color./ Lightly reduced nose. Good posture. Sweet, purple, northern cabernet franc fruit./ Grip and tannin apparent right on entry. Then sweet, cool, northern fruit. Fine tannin and good acidity. I like its poise and future. 16.4+

WT032112-08. 09 BEAULIEU VINEYARD NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (US) 14.5%; since 1900; blackberry, ripe plum, chocolate. Well, this is a treat. Deep purple color./ All the label descriptors fit. Plus there’s oak and smoke. Forthright American oak. Vanilla, cocoa, ripe fruit, power. Bright and sweet plumminess./ Sweet and spicy oak. Fabulous ripeness and acidity. Has it all. Wow! Best vintage of this in years. 17.4.

WT032112-10. 10 PIEMONTE BARBERA MATI, SCAGLIOLA - (ITALY) 13.5%; Mati is a nickname for Mathilde, frequently used for both girls and dogs in Piemonte. A fresh, friendly, cuddly barbera aptly named and labeled. No rusticity. All fruit and cookie dough./ Yeah, sweet and easy. Really user friendly. 16.3.

WT032112-11. 09 PEDRONCELLI BUSHNELL VINEYARD DRY CREEK VALLEY ZINFANDEL - (US) 15.2%; since 1927; Bushnell has been a Pedroncelli source for over 50 years; jammy blackberry and plum, spice. Full, deep, classic upper DCV with raspberry, bramble, peppercorn./ Spice and tannin edges. Sweet, flavorful fruit core. Really fine acidity. Great future. 17.0+

WT032112-12. 10 PFALZ RIESLING SAINT M, VILLA WOLF - (GERMANY) 11%; owned by Ernst Loosen. Good Pfalz riesling grain, power, dryness. An especially good vintage of this./ Yes, nice extract, acid, dryness. Grosses Gewachs direction, if less powerful. Certainly a best buy. 16.4+.

WT031412-02. 10 FRASCATI SUPERIORE, FONTANA CANDIDA - (ITALY) 12.5%. Fresh, crisp, appley, right. Concrete and mineral. Not at all fat like the 09./ Yeah, tight and minerally. Some sulphur to lose. 14.5+.

WT031412-03. 10 HAUTERIVE ROUSSANNE DOMAINE LA BASTIDE, GUILHEM DURAND - (FRANCE) 13%. Understated at present. Sulphur? Not a bit peachy./ Yeah, perhaps still under sulphur influence. More like young marsanne than roussanne. Hint of peach at the end. 14.8+.

WT031412-04. 10 BOURGOGNE BLANC CHAUMES DES PERRIERES, RAYMOND DUPONT-FAHN - (FRANCE) 13.5%. Young, tight, crisp 10 style. Good oak. Not as fully extracted as 08 nor as ripe and abundant as 09. Has its own character./ Full and dazzling, vivid display of fruit, oak, acidity, and Meursault grain, nut, autumn. Will go and grow. 17.6+.

WT031412-05. 07 ANABA SONOMA COAST CHARDONNAY - (US) 14.2%; named for an anabatic wind (I think it’s really a Bronx pronunciation of Ann Arbor); less 30% = $16.09. Clear, focused, and hefty. Really quite Meursault like also, with its nuts and grains and fine oak./ Attractive, sweet lemon taste. Good acid. Good oak. Large and fine. 16.7.

WT031412-08. 09 MAIN STREET LOS ALAMOS VINEYARD SANTA BARBARA PINOT NOIR - (US) 13.5%. Direct, sweet, and fruity. Santa Barbara coolness too, with tea like tones./ Sweet-tart Santa Barbara style of pinot. Some pinot barnyard too. High acid demands food. Good with meaty fish. 16.1.

WT031412-09. 10 PALO ALTO RESERVE MAULE VALLEY RED - (CHILE) 13.5%; 60% cabernet sauvignon, 25% carmenere, 15% syrah. Deep, dark, and ripe. Dark fruits, chocolate, coffee./ Yes, great oak character brings out the empyreumatic notions. Plenty of berry fruit. Good acid. A winner every vintage. 16.9.

WT031412-14. 08 BARBERA D’ALBA, AZ. AG. RIO FAVA - (ITALY) 13.5%. Good and bold, with ripeness approaching rancio. Really big, forceful, insistent, generous. Plenty of spice and vigor./ Glycerol, spice, oak, acid, depth, balance. Yes! Every bit as good as the 09. 16.9.

WT031412-15. 10 COTEAUX DE L’ARDECHE MARSELAN, DOMAINE DE COURON - (FRANCE) 14.5%; a cross with cabernet and grenache parentage. Inky purple color of marselan./ Deep purple reduction on the nose due to youth and recent shipment./ Good and juicy purple fruit flavors. Young and undeveloped.. Worth holding a few more weeks. Then likely good served cool. 15.5+.

WT031412-16. 09 COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES, DOMAINE DE COURON - (FRANCE) 14.5%; syrah, grenache, mourvedre; at Saint Marcel in the Ardeche. Good high altitude style of an Ardeche rouge. Villages size. Firm at present; many 09s are./ Good texture, strength, depth. Firm but still 09 fullness and power. Plenty of fruit packed down in there, and good Ardeche acidity. 16.6+.

WT031412-17. 09 TEIRA SONOMA ZINFANDEL - (US) 13.9%; named after daughters Thea and Keira. Some fruit sweetness, but mainly an understated sort of Sonoma County appellation zinfandel. 09 firm. Some oak extras. Not bad./ Firm and narrow young 09 style of zin. Might improve.15.0+.

WT031412-18. M. LAWRENCE GREEN EXTRA SEC - (US) 11%; from vidal and cayuga. Fresh, with vidal like cool, green orchard fruit and cayuga floral notions./ Plenty of fizz. Plenty of acidity. Very dry. Nature like. Good charmat product. 16.5.

WT030712-02. 10 SOAVE DANIELI, FATTORI - (ITALY) 12.5%. Oh, good and full garganega character! And 10 gives the acid cut. This is not cake frosting Soave like the 09, as enticing as that was./ Yes, there’s fine acidity as well as garganega peachiness. Well, this will be my current go-to Soave. 16.4.

WT030712-03. 10 VENEZIE PINOT GRIGIO GREGORIS, FATTORI - (ITALY) 12.5%. Good apple and nut grigio character plus varietal body. Real fulfillment for the vintage./ Rich nut and cream flavors. A winner, and well priced. 16.4.

WT030712-04. 10 COTES DE GASCOGNE SAUVIGNON BLANC-COLOMBARD, DOMAINE DE BALLADE - (FRANCE) 12%.Sweet meyer lemon aroma. And colombard chimes in with the green citrus tone of lime. Well, and here’s some tangerine too./ Juicy and large. Persistent citrus peel hard candy engagement and a creamy center. Expressive aftertaste. This satisfies. 16.4.

WT030712-05. 10 CHATEAU DES TOURTES, BLAYE - COTES DE BORDEAUX SAUVIGNON - (FRANCE) 12.5%; 80% sauvignon blanc, 20% semillon; citrus, grass, flowers, minerals. Love the full semillon base and the Blaye blanc body. In tune with the theme, for sure./ Sauvignon race at entry. Plenty of semillon padding in the plush middle. This is classic Blaye blanc. Hallmark vintage. 16.4.

WT030712-06. 10 SEBASTIANI SONOMA CHARDONNAY - (US) 13.5%. 10 crisp fruit and no oak excesses. Just right, taut, clear, citrusy, and inviting./ Quite a bit of oak up front. Toast and warm spices. This will settle in. A bit top-heavy at this stage. 16.0+.

WT030712-07. 09 SIDURI CHEHALEM MOUNTAINS PINOT NOIR - (US) 14.1%. Oregon coolness, plus rich and ruddy oak toast and earthy cherry./ Sweet and smooth. Accomplished 09 Oregon pinot. Great acid. Really delivers big time for the price. 16.6.

WT030712-08. 08 COMTE TOLOSAN MALBEC CEDRUS, LE CEDRE - (FRANCE) 12.5%. Oh, ripe and rich and dark and saucy. Still, it retains that French rigor and form. Dark and deep. A big-time overachiever./ Good balance, acid, fruit. This delivers. 16.4.

WT030712-10. 09 WOLF BLASS YELLOW LABEL SOUTH AUSTRALIA CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (AUSTRALIA) 13.5%. Sweet and strong, roasted. Simple, straightforward, more predictable than usual./ Good acid though. Not sweet Barossa at all. Good balance. Tasty. 15.7.

WT030712-11. 07 DONATI PAICINES CLARET - (US) 14.6%; merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc. Sweet and San Benito warm and deep and empyreumatic. Good, ripe fruit and wood...melded./ Yes! Harmonious, and eminently meal-worthy. Lovely stage of fruit and barrel aged development with just the right oak seasoning. 16.7.

WT030712-12. 07 TOSCANA, AVIGNONESI - (ITALY) 13%; 40% prugnolo gentile, 30% each cabernet sauvignon, merlot. Ruddy and muddled. Not exactly burned out, but dulled–possibly by storage conditions. Not bad though./ Suave and well developed. Good acid. 07 glycerol. Lacks flair. I mean, it works, but lacks pizzazz 15.7.

WT030712-13. 08 VERONESE RIPASSO CAMPOFIORIN, MASI - (ITALY) 13%; the original ripasso, made since 1964 by re-fermentation of new wine with semi-dried grapes, a process known as ‘appassimento’; ripe cherry, sweet spices. Relatively 08 tight and tart, but there’s that ripasso ripe core, good fruit, and largesse./ Yes, rich and ripe for the vintage. A success. Good acidity. Well, this is in tune with the series and reflects vintage nature. 16.5+.

WT030712-14. 10 GNARLY HEAD OLD VINE LODI ZINFANDEL - (US) 14.5%; 35-80 year old vines; dark berries, spice, plum, pepper, vanilla, toasted oak. Honest, sweet, direct Lodi zin with 10 dark fruit and restraint. Roasted berry quality–good vintage here./ Yeah, sweet raspberry and cranberry. Good astringency. Unique taste this vintage, and I like it. 16.1.

WT030712-15. 05 PRIORAT SALANQUES, CELLER MAS DOIX - (SPAIN) 15%. Yes, full bouquet, with developed fruit character, oak, and aged in oak complex. The oak is well integrated. Classic, mature Priorat./ Full and well elevated! Wow! All the bottle bouquet and barrel bouquet you could want. Power, grip, texture, complexity. Huge range of flavors and feels. 18.0.

WT030712-16. 10 MOSEL RIESLING, CLEAN SLATE - (GERMANY) 10.5%. Aromas surge forth. Full, crisp, penetrating, large, extracted. Wow!/ Light sweetness balanced by 10 acidity and extract. Take it to the table.. Sweet finish. 16.4.

WT030712-17. 11 DOMINIO DEL PLATA CRIOS MENDOZA TORRONTES - (ARGENTINA) 13.8%. Wow! More powerful than usual, but not too much. Just big on the nose. Classic. Leaning more toward muscat than gewurz, but, really, a torrontes through and through. Glycerol, astringency, power, and a succulent core. Long aftertaste. A complete torrontes that surpasses even its own high standards. 17.2

BONAL GENTIANE-QUINA DES MONTAGNES DE LA GRANDE CHARTREUSE - (FRANCE) 16%; mistelle (barely fermented wine fortified with brandy) infused with quinine, gentian, and herbs of the Grande Chartreuse mountains. Sweet, young, a little sticky. Sercial madeira like aspect./ A sweet foundation cut with quinine bitterness. Monastic herbal flavors. 16.3.
