A little sharp and lean for now. Will soften and broaden over the weeks to become richer like the 2010. Well liked by the group. 15.9+.

A valid aglianico. Still firm./ Yes, dry and tannic yet. Needs time to develop the breadth and depth of taste of the 2010. Good poise. 16.0+.

Not a lot of give, depth, charm, enticement at this early stage. Little garrigue showing. Needs time. The Bouches’ wines often do. 15.5+.

They were tasted at later stages of development./ Good wood and sweet fruit. Some warm-fruit jelly-jam. Woody aftertaste. 15.8+.

Perfect image of the appellation. Total summer refresher. Best vintage of this yet. Couldn’t ask for more. 16.5.

WT072314-06. 06 CHATEAU LACOMBE NOAILLAC, CRU BOURGEOIS, MEDOC - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13%; 47% cabernet sauvignon, 45% merlot; 5% cabernet franc, 3% petit verdot. Good 2006 development–finally. Softer at last. Even buxom. Lush cabernet sauvignon cedar, currant, berry. Plus an oak complex. A very pleasant surprise./ The dry tannin of 2006 is still noticeable. Will develop, soften, and fill out further. Still, it’s mighty useful with food right now. 16.3+.

A lot of cabernet sauvignon blackberry plus light oak dressings. Much more revealing than it was at an earlier age./ Still pretty tannic for 2009 and five years’ age. Progressing logically and showing good promise. 16.3+.

With all that merlot, is it on clay? A classic Moulis bruiser./ Very severe, dry, tannic still. Needs lots of cellar time. 16.0++.

Super class as usual. The oak, the fruit, the flowers, the regal perfumes. All about finesse at this Chateau. Always./ Lots of aromatic allure, joy. There’s the 2010 firm framing too. Such class, elegance. Full, fine tannin, so will greatly reward cellaring. 17.1+.

Not reductive like the 2008 was for a long while. Lovely raspberry, white pepper, white flowers./ Oh, boy, the flowers! The cracked pepper! Cool and racy northern Rhone syrah–there’s no substitute for it. 17.0+.

Spices, including peppercorns, and a gamy note./ Rich, savory, voluminous, sweet, fulfilled, satisfying. So much more accommodating on the palate now, so much more like the great 2011. A player, and a comer. 16.5+.

With aeration, black fruit of mourvedre and syrah are revealed. And Right Bank cool grenache. Needs time./ Powerful, ripe, and earthy for a Right Banker. Out of character. Worth cellaring. Could be a sleeper. 15.9+.

Palpable extract, etch, swelling./ Again, the full extract, textural sensation. Dab of halbtrocken sweetness to balance. Satisfying body. Yes, great balance to bring to the dinner table. 17.0.

WT071614-06. 11 CAHORS MALBEC CEDRE HERITAGE, CHATEAU LE CEDRE - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13%. Earthy, bretty. Not the usual Cedre elegance. Light oak. Some cherry, tar, and even Cedre charm as it airs./ Dry and tannic. 2011 slimness seen more often in the vintage’s clarets than its Cahors wines. Less earthy than nose. Full 2011 acid. Good power, but lean on fruit. Sends mixed messages. 15.4+.

WT071614-07. 10 MADIRAN CUVEE CHARLES DE BATZ DOMAINE BARTHOUMIEU, DIDIER BARRE - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.2%; 90% tannat, 10% cabernet sauvignon; aged in new oak; Charles de Batz is the real name of musketeer d’Artagnan. Wow! Great oak and tannat dark, compact definition. Creosote. Cool power; I mean, the alcohol is cool rather than hot. Great nose./ Yes, grand oak and tannat character. Cool, dark, powerful. Lucid. Awesome. Fine tannin. 17.5+.

WT071614-09. 12 VENTOUX CUVEE DES 3 MESSES BASSES, LES VIGNERONS DE MONT VENTOUX - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14%; 50% grenache, 30% carignan, 20% syrah. Dry and earthy as usual lately. Reductive funk./ Fresh relief. Flows. Vinous, good acid. Easy, if reduced on nose. 15.9.

WT071614-10. 12 PLAN DE DIEU COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES, DOMAINE DE L’ESPIGOUETTE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; proprietor Bernard Latour. Narrower and firmer and more reductive than the 2011. Sweet enough but more of 2012's straight forward fruit display and less garrigue./ More garrigue on the palate. A bit fluid. Not the best vintage in the series. 16.2.

WT070914-01. 13 VINHO VERDE LAS LILAS, ADEGA DE PONTE DA BARCA - (PORTUGAL) 10%. Yes, as with the previous vintage, this cuvee clearly incorporates the superior, aromatic grape varieties. Full of fruit and flowers./ Indeed, the fruit is rich and distinctive. Plenty of lift too. The real deal in Vinho Verde. 16.6.

Broad, upscale grechetto basis, some trebbiano levity, and light malvasia airs. Quality and value./ Rich, distinguished grechetto flavor and texture. Gives and gives. Works hard at pleasing. 16.5.

WT070914-03. 13 SANCERRE RESERVE DURAND, DURAND - (FRANCE LOIRE) 13%; at Les Epsailles, Crezancy. Fine and concentrated aromas of gooseberry and lime./ Appealing, juicy flavors of gooseberry and ruby red grapefruit. Good acid verve. A lot of zing, really. Impressive for both flavor and texture. 16.8.

WT070914-05. 12 FOUR VINES NAKED UNOAKED SANTA BARBARA CHARDONNAY - (U.S.) 13.9%. Open knit and taking on some bouquet already. Warm grains and dried orange peel./ Well developed now. Not very refreshing, despite the racy Santa Barbara acidity. Age has brought on a certain heaviness. 15.7-.

WT070914-06. 13 VENTOUX ROSE LA VIEILLE FERME, FAMILLE PERRIN - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%. Sweet smelling red fruits and berries. Wide appeal. A strange, hoppy sort of overtone I associate with sorbates./ Soft and sweetish. Near anonymous. 15.0.

WT070914-07. 13 PARKER STATION MONTEREY-SANTA BARBARA-SAN LUIS OBISPO PINOT NOIR - (U.S.) 13.5%; 62-24-14; by Fess Parker. Fresh, young, wholesome fruit that is a feature of both 2012 and 2013 California reds. Gold Dust Twin vintages. Sweet fruit with coastal cool demeanor. No herbs, no tea of an underripe vintage. Rather, nut-sprinkled cherry sundae. This will turn out as good as the 2012./ Sweet and easy on the approach, with good Central Coast fruit acid to temper. Spice-tinged finish. Appealing balance of padding and race. 16.5.

Real RRV pinot class./ Yes, full flavor and texture breadth and depth of fruit, oak, spice, and sweet savories. A three-dimensional pinot at a bargain price. 16.9+.

WT070914-09. 12 CHIANTI COLLI SENESI, TENUTA DI TRECCIANO - (ITALY) 13%; 40 acre estate 10 miles southwest of Siena; all sangiovese. Oh, the sweet ripeness of a Colli Senesi Chianti! Rich and concentrated. Deep sweet and dried cherry tones. Really very intense and deep seated./ Fruit sweetness, great fruit acidity and fine fruit tannin. Wonderful flavor and texture displays. Has it all. As good as the 2011...at least. 16.8+.

WT070914-10. 12 ROSSO DI MONTEPULCIANO, DEI - (ITALY) 13%; estate bottled by Maria Caterina Dei. Fine, deep, rich, concentrated and ripe prugnolo gentile version of sangiovese. 2012 purple-black fruit./ Deep and intense, uber Rosso concentration. This doesn’t deprive it of Montepulciano beauty, grace, silky texture, gossamer style. A hallmark example full of class and generosity. 17.0+.

WT070914-11. 13 BAJO ARAGON GARNACHA VINAS VIEJAS MONTE LA SARDA, BODEGAS LECERANAS - (SPAIN) 14.5%; 46+ year old vines; 15-20% whole clusters. Fully ripe grenache typical of this warm zone. Sweet and full delivery of old vines intensity./ Full of sweet strawberry, raspberry, and cherry ripe grenache flavors. A complete Bajo Aragon tinto. 16.7+.

WT070914-12. 12 DASHE DRY CREEK VALLEY ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) 14.5%. Coincidentally, featured in Eric Asminov’s ongoing wine-class feature in 7/9's NYT. Deep, powerful, ripe and dried raspberry DCV zin fruit. Class oak in a support role./ Yes, in tune with valley and winemaker. Especially fine example in this top vintage. Sweet and strong fruit dominance. Good oak seasoning. Fine tannin. Ideal balance. 17.1+.

WT070914-13. 13 COTES DE GASCOGNE GROS MANSENG RESERVE SELECTION, DOMAINE DES CASSAGNOLES - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 12%. Fresh. Not as much late harvest character as the other Gascogne reserves. Or the 2011 version of this one. Sauvignon blanc like grass and citrus./ Off dry. More like sauvignon blanc than gros manseng. Good, and well priced. I’d like to see it again in a few months. We sampled the 2011 at a later stage of development, and it had more varietal character. 16.3+.

WT070914-14. 13 KIONA WASHINGTON RIESLING - (U.S.) 12.8%; medium sweet on the riesling scale. Some sulphur to start. Clears pretty quickly. Not much aromatic expression, varietal expression. Rather boring nose./ Hoppy, grainy, seedy tastes. Boring from both flavor and texture standpoints. Sweetish, without enough acid to match. After a long and successful run, the last two vintages of this have been disappointments. 14.1.

WT070214-02. 13 MUSCADET SEVRE ET MAINE SUR LIE LE FILS DES GRAS MOUTONS, CLAUDE BRANGER - (FRANCE LOIRE) 12%; from a parcel of vines averaging 36 years. Oh, god, an enormous display of green fruits and botanicals. This one goes to eleven./ Full volume, flavor, stuffing. Small crop and old vines bring about one of the most intense Muscadets I’ve tasted. 16.8.

WT070214-03. 12 CHABLIS CHAMPS ROYAUX, WILLIAM FEVRE - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; the estate covers 125 acres, half in the Premiers and Grands Crus. Full, classic calcaire, apple, citrus and peel. Complete village Chablis./ Full texture and flavor. Pure and classic. Running on all cylinders. I’m glad they skipped the oak. Terroir rules. 17.0.

WT070214-04. 13 CHATEAU SUAU, BORDEAUX BLANC SEC - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 12%; in Cadillac Cotes de Bordeaux; 50% semillon, 35% sauvignon blanc, 15% sauvignon gris. Full semillon body, sauvignon zip, and, well now, the sauvignon gris really stands out for its wax and nut aromas./ The full varietal spectrum spreads out on the palate. Full and rangy, richly textured. 16.8.

WT070214-05. 13 LANGUEDOC BLANC BERGERIE, CHATEAU DES KARANTES - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%; 65% bourboulenc, 35% marsanne. Spices, hops, hyssop, bay-laurel. Boy, I’ve never experienced this much aromatic range and exotica from bourboulenc before. Plus marsanne supplies the bulk. This gives and gives./ Rich and powerful, mouthfilling, flavorful. Really delivers. No fish dish too spicy for this guy. 16.6.
