WT042016-2. 14 LAURENTIDE LEELANAU PENINSULA PINOT GRIS - (U.S.) 12.0; Best of Show - International Eastern Wine Competition. Oh, yes, a sweet nose of cool apple, pear, quince. Full./ Full and sweet fruited on the palate, with acid to balance. The padding of pinot gris modulates the acidity. Delish. 16.7.
WT042016-3. 14 L'ECOLE NO. 41 OLD VINES COLUMBIA VALLEY CHENIN BLANC - (U.S.) 13.5%; est 1983; vines planted in 1970s. A bit rustic. Pear and melon richness, apple crispness./ Suave, smooth chenin with light melony sweetness. Altogether wholesome palate with good juiciness. 16.2/16.6.

Ideal raciness./ Yes, attractive white cedar wisp of bottle development. Near dry. Racy, flavorful, on the spot. Wine of place. Not Grosses Gewachs gripping. 17.0.

WT042016-6. 14 PIEMONTE BARBERA OTTONE I, CANTINE SAN SILVESTRO - (ITALY) 13%. Very fresh and breezy in cool 2014. Barbera darkness, spicy cherry. Good vintage of this./ Yes, 2014 raciness plus barbera's sweet glycerol feel. Light and lively. Flavorful middleweight. 16.2.
WT042016-7. 11 MADIRAN CUVEE CHARLES DE BATZ, DOMAINE BERTHOUMIEU - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14%; 90% tannat; 10% cab sauv. Wow! Good wood and barrel time. 2011 open and revealing. Toasted cherry poptart. Sweet, tarry, deep, loaded./ Yes, barrel earned savors, sweet cherry fruit, and overall balance of tart acid, light tannic grip, and rounding glycerol. A three dimensional Madiran with a long finish and a promising future. 17.7+.

Spicy barrel earned savors, plus 2011 elegance. Fabulous. Yes, 2011 flow, fruit elegance. Fabulous acid, race, all. Barrel elevated. Yikes! 17.4.

WT042016-10. 13 STEPHEN VINCENT NORTH COAST CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S.) 13.8%. Starts out 2013 tight, even severe. Hiding stuff. Not overly spirituous. Grows as it airs to reveal Mendocino dark fruit, Alexander Valley fullness, Lake Co. flow./ Yes, improves with air. More dimension, expression. Good oak toffee taste. Sweet Alexander cabernet. Will improve. 16.2+.

Dark oak. McLaren like. An amazing surprise what lurks within given the whimsical comic book label./ Deep, sweet, spirituous Aussie that sports balance. Finds a sweet spot. Ready to enjoy. 17.0.

Deep, with light reduction bulb flower sensation. Young./ Young and still encased in baby fat. Tender gewurz and southern acidity. Good body, plumpness. 16.3+.
WT042016-14. 14 SANTA JULIA TARDIO LATE HAVEST MENDOZA TORRONTES half liter - (ARGENTINA) 8%; 130 g/l residual sugar. Very sweet as well as solidly built. Lots of mineral savor. Dense, young, super concentrated./ Oh, sweet and savory, total. Citrusy acid to cut through the thickness. Dynamite wine, and it's just getting started. 17.7+.
WT042016-15. CALEM DACOSTA RUBY PORTO - (PORTUGAL) 19.5%. Sweet, nutty, powerful classic. Everything fits together./ Yes, grip, power, depth. No tame young ruby, this seems more like a reserve. Great value. 16.9.

WT041316-3. 14 CHABLIS, DOMAINE JEAN-PAUL & BENOIT DROIN - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%. Oh, full of calcaire, stone, terroir. Plenty of body, oomph./ Very full. Volume and roundness. Pushing Premier Cru dimensions. 16.9.
WT041316-4. 15 COTES DE PROVENCE ROSE IMPATIENCE, CHATEAU DE BERNE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 12.5%. Nail polish remover. Very strong smell./ And taste. Premature. Some pink fruit. Astringent, bitter. 13.5+.
WT041316-5. 15 FRANCAIS RAISINS GAULOIS, MARCEL LAPIERRE - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%. Dry, pinched, and austere for this ripe vintage. Symptoms of youth, I suppose./ Light bodied, and lightly sweet. Gentle acidity. Minor proportions for now. Will likely fill out, as did the 2014. 15.0+.
WT041316-6. 13 BOURGOGNE EPINEUIL PINOT NOIR, DOMAINE MOUTARD DILIGENT - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12%. Tart cherry juice. Vigorous. Sweet core./ Sweet cherry and herb. Good vigor and glycerol. 16.6+.
WT041316-7. 14 CHATEAU DU HAUT QUERAY, BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 12.5%; Martine Bordiere at Petit-Palais-et-Cornemps north of Lussac Saint Emilion. Well, sweet and nutty. That cherry-nut sundae aroma of perfectly ripe merlot. Plus 2014 claret's innate elegance./ Yes, juicy cherry flavor with nutty overtone. Full-flavored. Light tannic grip. Pure and dazzling merlot cherry aftertaste. 16.6.
WT041316-8. 13 LIRAC, CHATEAU DE MONTFAUCON - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14%; 60% grenache, 30% syrah, 10% cinsault. Deep and romantic Lirac. Spicy, fruity, barrel broadened. Strong, sweet, full, vigorous./ Flavorful. Lirac grace. Sweet fruit, melted tannins, harmony, all. A thorough representation of Lirac. 17.0+.

WT041316-10. 13 TOSCANA LAGONE, AIA VECCHIA - (ITALY) 14.5%. Hot, powerful, well extracted, woody. Vanilla note. Age further for full integration./ Yes, ripe, oaky, spirituous, sweet. Modern style. 16.5+.
WT041316-11. 11 RIOJA CRIANZA, BODEGAS LAN - (SPAIN) 13.5%; all tempranillo; 1 yr in barrels of both American & French oak. Dry, long in cooperage. Both oak and fruit are subtle. More a product of barrel aging than of either of these components./ More sweet fruit and oak revealed on the palate. A balanced, temperate crianza that's versatile at the table and has plenty of aging potential to boot. 16.2+.
WT041316-12. 11 ALENTEJANO PEDRA BASTA, SONHO LUSITANO - (PORTUGAL) 14.5%; Richard Mayson, MW; 30% ea trincadeira, aragonez, alicante bouschet; 10% cab sauv. Very ripe, almost syrupy in 2011. Very powerful. Shows warmer upbringing than the previous vintage, and so it is./ Sweet fruit warmth. Powerful, pungent, and garrulous Alentejano. 16.3+.
WT041316-13. 12 CAMERON HUGHES LOT 464 OLD VINE LODI ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) 13.9%. Strong and straight on Lodi zin. Not at all sticky like some. Light and good wood application./ Sweet and attractive wood. Elegant, dashing. No Lodi issues. Sweetness, flow, ease. A gulpable zinfandel. 16.4.
WT041316-14. ITALIA BIANCO JOYVIN, RASHI VINEYARDS - (KOSHER) 5.5%; mevushal. Good and crisp. Good acid. Clear and pleasing muscat aroma, more floral than stone-fruity./ Fizzy, with sweet fruit. Nice and elegant, racy. Fabulously well crafted. 17.0.

WT040616-1. 15 LANGHE ARNEIS, ELVIO TINTERO - (ITALY) 13%. A good noseful. Some fermentation residuals yet./ Dry and fragrant. Talc. Good acid. Well rounded texture. Better in a couple of months. 16.3+.
WT040616-2. 15 CLIFFORD BAY MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC - (NEW ZEALAND) 13%. Sweet and enticing pink grapefruit, lime, and mango./ Sweet and juicy fruit. Uncomplicated.. Good amplitude, strength, follow through. 16.3.
WT040616-3. 14 BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY, COLIN BAROLLET - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%. Genuine if understated to start. Light oak, terroir. More aromatic range and intensity after aeration./ Soft, and shy on flavor and texture interest in the beginning. Builds more interest over time. The benefits of breathing. Will prove a good value if cellared. 15.9+.
WT040616-4. 15 COTEAUX D'AIX EN PROVENCE ROSE, COMMANDERIE DE BARGEMONE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 12.5%. Banana and berry. Still in formation. Lithe as usual./ Premature in regards to aromatic development. The usual good form and elegance. This will start to please by May. These roses are arriving too early this year and are not ready for prime time in March/April. 15.9+.
WT040616-5. 15 PIC SAINT LOUP ROSE, CHATEAU DE LANCYRE - (FRANCE ROSE) 13.5%. Fuller, stronger, redder, drier–as usual. Less banana./ Full, strapping cold weather rose, dinner rose. This has power in 2015. Always shows stamina and promise to fill out into the fall. 16.0+.
WT040616-6. 13 BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR, COLIN BAROLLET - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%. Discreetly sweet Bourgogne pinot nose. Ripe enough for 2013. Good framing and material./ Meaty, pulpy, sweet pinot taste. Plenty of fruit bulk. From the Hautes Cotes? 16.6+.
WT040616-7. 14 CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE, LOUIS RAYNALD - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%. Good ripeness and volume. Valid, and surprisingly large this cool vintage./ Yes, a full bodied 2014 Chateauneuf. Without the complexity of the top renditions, it certainly offers plenty enough Chateauneuf pleasure for the price. 16.6+.
WT040616-8. 13 ROOT 1 COLCHAGUA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (CHILE) 13.5%. Sweet and hot and strong./ Oak and power. Fine tannin. Sweet. In your face. Preferred the 2012. 15.9.
WT040616-9. 11 DOURO, QUINTA DO TEDO - (PORTUGAL) 14%. Sweet, forceful, singed, young Douro tinta of a hot year./ Yes, hot and aggressive still, strong. A bully. Dry. Young. In need of cellaring. 15.8+.
WT040616-10. 14 MCMANIS FAMILY LODI ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) 14.5%. Sweet, strong, and Lodi syrupy./ Simple, sweetish, mild textured. Raspberry jam aftertaste. 15.6+.
WT040616-11. 14 NAHE RIESLING HOOKED!, RUDI WIEST - (GERMANY) 11%. Some wet wool SO2. Fruit enclosed, enveloped./ Dull and plain at this stage. Needs air and age to unshackle its sulphur bonds. 15.0+.
WT040616-12. PATRAS RETSINA, PATRAIKI - (GREECE) 11.5%. Well, this has a lot fresher base wine than last week's Retsina, and more resinous personality too. Not so much pine pitch as bayleaf, bay rum./ Less like evergreen than herbs. Well, maybe some fitzer; certainly not pine. So it's different, not classic. Expressive though. 15.8.
