(WT111820-01) 19 DUCK POND WILLAMETTE VALLEY CHARDONNAY  $16.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 13.5%; est. 1993; aged in seasoned, lightly toasted French oak barrels. Pleasing fullness. Mellowness of barrel age without much if any oak extraction. Very, very pleasant creaminess without any lactic notions./ There's a dash of oak spice on the front of the palate. Adds complexity. Good acidity, and light oak tannin for a balanced presentation. I'm impressed! Ordered pinot gris and was sent this. Glad I kept it. 16.8.

(WT111820-02) 19 TOURAINE SAUVIGNON LE COEUR DE LA REINE, DOMAINE JACKY MARTEAU  $14.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 14.1%; 4th generation estate on the south bank of the Cher. Oh, that's a pungent tangelo, mango, and passion fruit aromatic set. Piercing./ Equally demonstrative on the palate. What tang and flavor! Long, detailed aftertaste. 17.1.

(WT111820-03) 20 BEAUJOLAIS PRIMEUR GRIOTTES DOMAINE DU VISSOUX, PIERRE-MARIE CHERMETTE  $14.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13.5%; 5th generation estate; 25 year old vines; Peter Weygandt selection. That's fruity. And fulfilled thanks to an early harvest. No reduction, no sulphur. Red and black fruits and berries./ Suave, even, accomplished. Very good acidity in balance with the fruit richness. 16.6.

(WT111820-05) 19 COTES DU RHONE, DOMAINE SAINTE-ANNE  $12.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; at Saint Gervais in the upper Gard; 60% grenache, 30% syrah, 10% cinsault. The beat goes on. We've seen three vintages of this in twelve months, and none is premature. Cool, racy, upper Gard presentation, with plenty of garrigue, peppercorn, and racy red and black fruits./ Surprisingly full in the mouth. Of course, it IS 14.5%. No heat though. Well rounded, well balanced, and accomplished for current service. 16.6+.

(WT111820-06) 18 VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE RAFAEL, SOC. AGR. TOMMASI  $15.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 12.5%; est. 1902; 60% corvina, 25% rondinella, 15% molinari; 15 months in Slavonian barrels. Full 2018 fruit display. A complex of corvina black fruit and the others' red fruit. It's rich, yet it has no ripasso aspirations, thank goodness./ Appropriately medium bodied. 2018 fruit forward and flavorful, with good acidity, balance. Yes, there is still room in this world for a 'medium bodied' red wine, though when I use the term in my notes it's a red flag to the 'bigger is better' crowd. A group favorite. 16.7.

(WT111820-07) 18 BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR, DOMAINE MATROT  $31.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12%; 15 yr old vines at Puligny and Meursault; 100% destemmed; aged 15 months on lees in barrels, 10% new. Oh, my goodness, what a PURE pinot noir fruit display here in 2018. You won't find the likes outside of Burgundy./ Yes, silken texture, finest of tannins, and ultimate Cote de Beaune pinot expression. 17.1+.

(WT111820-08) 18 MARANGES VIEILLES VIGNES, DOMAINE MATROT  $37.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; southernmost Cote de Beaune village; 30 yr old vines; same winemaking procedures. Long natural cork. More volume and weight here, but also more sullen, backward./ Yes, youthful and enclosed just after opening. Though it blossomed to degree when the group tasted it following a couple hours' aeration, it really didn't begin to express itself fully until the next day, whereupon to took the lead over its Bourgogne cellar mate. This deserves cellaring.

(WT111820-09) 18 MERCUREY, DOMAINE FAIVELEY  $34.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; est. 1825; vines planted in 62, 78, 81; aged 12 months in barrels, 10% new. Well, this is back to the flashy, fruity, forward 2018 style of the Matrot Bourgogne. It's almost syrupy, which is diametrically different from the rock hard young Faiveleys of decades back./ Yes, Mercurey black plum and cherry fruit that's more like Nuits pinot than Beaune. Sassy fruit acidity. Good acid and fine tannin. It's not at all syrupy after all. Clinging aftertaste. 17.0+.

(WT111820-10) 17 LE DUC NOIR SONOMA COAST PINOT NOIR  $29.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 14.5%; mainly Russian River Valley; aged 12 months in French oak barrels, 20% new; Parker 91/100. By the Boisset family of Burgundy, this pinot is clearly of a warmer setting, yet it can't be easily dismissed as a pandering sort of California interpretation. There's RRV race as well as CA sweetness. There's the toasty embellishment of barrel aging, not to excess. There's acid as well as power./ It is indeed lush, conveying even a degree of RS. Ample, flavorful, and lasting, it's a lot of pinot for thirty bucks. 17.2.

(WT111820-11) 17 CHATEAU ROCHER-CALON, MONTAGNE - SAINT EMILION  $16.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; 95% merlot, 5% cab franc. Tough act to follow, but it stands up. How did it achieve its alcohol content in this cold, wet vintage? Who cares? The fruit ripeness, the power, and the volume are there, coupled with Saint Emilion fruit generosity./ Unbelievable fruit sweetness for 2017. A completely accomplished Right Bank claret that lasts and lasts. 16.9+.

(WT111820-12) 15 WILD HOG NOVA VINEYARD LAKE COUNTY ZINFANDEL  $27.99
11/18/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 15.5%; at Cazadero, 1400'. Boy, it's more than zinfandel raspberry. There's cassis here too. Racy, edgy, deep./ Sweet and powerful, with daring level of VA as always, that doesn't go over the edge. Fabulous, mouthfilling volume, textural acid. Marches to its own drummer. 17.4.
