(WT082620-01) 19 DOMAINE DAULNY  $23.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 13%. There's a lot of lift here, more than in some recent vintages. A fruity, straight forward presentation that entices./ The palate is cool, calcareous, and juicy, showing the welcoming ripe fruitiness of 2019. Bitter streak at the finale keeps it honest. 16.3+.

(WT082620-02) 19 RIAS BAIXAS ALBARINO, BURGANS  $14.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 12.5%; from Val do Salnes; Eric Solomon selection. Some reduction under screwcap. Varietal basis under./ At opening, reduction suppresses the fruit. Once the group got it after aeration, it began to show its stuff, such as citrus, minerals, and sea air-borne saltiness. Crisp acidity and ever-growing flavor. 16.2+.

(WT082620-03) 19 MINHO ALVARINHO, NORTICO  $15.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (PORTUGAL) 13%; Ole & Obrigado selection. Upon opening, nose accurate but still low key. Nice little tingle to it./ Yeah, dry, dusty, understated. This has been a steady favorite but likely not tasted this young before. Pleasing astringency. This one opened up well for the group too, showing bright varietal character, tropical fruit overtones, and attractive acidity and minerality. 16.4+.

(WT082620-04) 18 BERGERAC BLANC SEC, CHATEAU LES MIAUDOUX  $14.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13%; 50% sauvignon, 45% semillon, 5% muscadelle; Becky Wasserman selection. Well , look what an extra year in bottle does! Wisp of H2S departs to reveal attractive Bordeaux area sauvignon assets. Lemongrass sauvignon, lemon curd semillon, touch of muscadelle green mango./ Semillon roundness, sauvignon bright acidity. Full flavor spectrum. Pleasing texture and length too. Semillon waxiness, sauvignon minerality. Orange blossom afterglow. Widely enjoyed by the group. 16.6.

(WT082620-05) 18 CHATEAU TREBIAC, GRAVES BLANC  $18.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13%; proprietor Arnaud de Butler at Portets. 80% semillon, 20% sauvignon. Understated. Just shipped. Probably should have waited a couple of weeks. Graves material evident, semillon weight but a much aroma yet./ I like the semillon weight, the feel, the balance. Seems to have it all together. Just not pumping out the flavor yet. Let's see how this shows when the group tries it following aeration. Well, it had more to offer later, including terroir, complexity of varietal characters, flavor, balance, and length. Particularly the next day! 16.6+.

(WT082620-06) 18 ALTO ADIGE PINOT GRIGIO, CANTINA TRAMIN  $16.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13%; Leonardo LoCascio selection. Valid, full bodied, evolving pinot grigio. Taking on a nutty patina./ Apple and peel, some citricity, and nuttiness of a maturing white wine. A lot to offer here in terms of flavor, body, balance, character, minerality, and depth. Enjoyed by the group. 16.1.

(WT082620-07) 18 COTES DU RHONE BLANC RESERVE, CHATEAU MONT REDON  $17.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%; grenache blanc, clairette, bourboulenc, roussanne, picpoul. Light sulphur under screwcap still present in its third year. Admirably traditional southern Rhone dry white encepagement formed of non aromatic varieties. Good heft./ Yes, rightly formed classic emphasizing body over perfume. Thus exceptionally versatile at the table. 16.6.

(WT082620-08) 19 CHINON ROSE GOUTTE DE ROSE, DOMAINE DE LA NOBLAIE  $14.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 13.5%; Jon-David Headrick selection. Light mercaptan under screwcap seems to suppress cabernet franc rose aromatics. With aeration, elegant, subtle aromatics peek out./ More flavor than aroma. Dry. Some astringency, even tannin and bitterness. Quite a full rose, made for the table. 16.0+.

(WT082620-09) 17 SAVIGNY LES BEAUNE LES PIMENTIERS, DOMAINE ARNOUX  $34.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%. Well, I'm getting the same bountiful 'griottes' Savigny pinot aromas I got last week. (That bottle later turned corky.) Full, penetrating, tactile sensations too./ Juicy flavor of small, wild cherry concentration. Barrel time adds savory complexity. An enormous group favorite. Orders taken. 17.4+.

(WT082620-10) 16 ALTO ADIGE PINOT NOIR, CANTINA TRAMIN  $18.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; Leonardo Locascio selection. A completely different breed of cat. Crisp, racy, high altitude pinot of the proper degree of ripeness, so no green fruit issues./ Pinot's relative roundness in Alto Adige's pantheon of red varieties. True tart cherry flavor and acidity. Most meal-worthy. The sleeper of the tasting so far. Somewhat controversial with the group--and, admittedly, the Savigny was a tough act to follow. Yet, admirers of this sort of pinot noir styling were huge advocates. 16.6.

(WT082620-11) 16 RIOJA CRIANZA ARIENZO, MARQUES DE RISCAL  $10.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 14%; 95% tempranillo, 5% graciano; 18 months in American oak barrels. Good color saturation for a Rioja of this age./ Sweet fruited, yet with solidity, with form. The oak is well engaged. Looks like Riscal has finally learned how to make an appealing YOUNG red wine./ Proper crianza amalgam of fruit and oak. Fine fruit tannin. Well balanced in all respects. Another sleeper. Kudos. The group had some detractors to the modern styling. Everyone agreed the price was right. 16.7.

(WT082620-12) 18 CHATEAU PERTHUS, COTES DE BOURG  $12.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14%; mostly merlot.. Dark color/ Black fruited 2018 Bourg. Not overripe but kinda syrupy at 14% concentration./ Yeah, the power carries a burn with it. Let me stop a minute and declare that hay fever may be shutting down some of my sensory prowess, and certainly making the back palate sensitive to alcohol. Seems like a claret designed to attract California-wine fans. Good if not traditional. The group, mainly Europhiles, found this a bit too New-Worldish. 16.2.

(WT082620-13) 17 COTES CATALANES CARIGNAN VIEILLES VIGNES TESSELLAE, FAMILLE LAFAGE  $14.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; Eric Solomon selection. Warm, large, rich, abundant Lafage styling that Eric Solomon so admires (and uses as a model to craft other French and Spanish wines). Well this is sweet cherry and pepper carignan carried to a logical conclusion./ Big, bold, hot, stalwart, insistent. BBQ match. Not the group's favorite style of French wine. 16.3.
How many:

(WT082620-14) 18 COTES DU RHONE RESERVE, DOMAINE DE LA JANASSE  $15.99
08/26/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; near Courthezon; 55% grenache, 25% syrah, 10% carignan; 5% ea cinsault, mourvedre; Eric Solomon selection. A surprising degree of reductive coolness to this, all for the better. May be the vintage talking. Plenty of fruit, the darker varieties making their presence known./ Both body and balance. Wears its spirit well, though there is some heat in the back. Very wide ranging and abundant flavors. Another worthy vintage of this. Conversely, this one seemed to shut down the more it aired, so many in the group thought it needed cellaring. 16.7+.
