(WT081220-01) 19 PENEDES BLANCO CUVEE SELECTION GESSAMI, FAMILIA GRAMONA  $16.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 11%; half sauvignon blanc, plus muscats frontignan and alexandria, and gewurztraminer; vines 35-50 years old; organically grown; Eric Solomon selection. What it intends to be. Sauvignon blanc grassiness to the fore, backed by floral and stone fruit aromas of the other players./ Super aromatic and delicious. Sauvignon acidity cuts through muscat richness and gewurz viscosity. Gewurz bitterness sweeps the palate clean at the end. Very popular with the group. 16.3.

(WT081220-02) 18 SANCERRE, CHARLES DEBOURGES  $24.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 13%. 2018 concentration. Seems to have lost its youthful pizzazz. Going heavy now./ No longer showing much sauvignon spunk. At least it's well textured for mealtime use. 15.2.

(WT081220-03) 18 CHABLIS, SIMONNET-FEBVRE  $25.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%. Those nice, clean lints that mark a Simonnet Chablis. Minerally, almost steeling in its cold and calculated approach. Chablis is about winemaking choices as wella s terroir./ Greater soft ness and roundness on the palate than the nose suggested. Still, it retains the house style. Very clean finish. 16.5.

(WT081220-04) 18 MACON VILLAGES, DOMAINE HENRI PERRUSSET  $21.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; at Farges; Kermit Lynch selection. Culture shock. South versus North Burgundy. Rounder, softer, riper fruit presentation. Faithful to Maconnais chardonnay's apple-citrus melange./ Markedly softer than the Chablis. Reasonable flavor and texture spreads. Faithful to the vernacular. 16.3.

(WT081220-05) 19 BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES ROSE, CHATEAU THIVIN  $18.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; Kermit Lynch selection. Very pretty and precise gamay rose strawberry aroma. Persists and builds as it airs. Good crisp edge./ Yes, this just keeps filling out Expansive texture and flavor that end up fully satisfying. Juicy aftertaste. Would love this with saddle of hare. This continued to blossom throughout the evening and was a big group favorite. 16.7.

(WT081220-06) 19 COTES DU LOT MALBEC ROSE COUTALE, DOMAINE PHILIPPE BERNEDE  $12.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE ROSE) 14.5%; Kermit Lynch selection. Softer, broader, and more powerful. Penetrating, cool aromas. Kudos for its generosity./ Power countered by richness. Malbec peels pepperiness. Nothing held back; all about give versus finesse. Needs food though. Nice value. How many heady roses are out there? Well, Gigondas for one, but it's twice as expensive. This is a true winter rose. 16.5.

(WT081220-07) 18 COTE DE NUITS VILLAGES, DOMAINE GACHOT-MONOT  $34.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE GURGUNDY) 13%; at Corgoloin, south of Nuits St. Georges; 40-45 year old vines; Kermit Lynch selection. Deep, dark, plummy Nuits pinot nose. Well extracted./ Large ih the mouth. Flavors restrained by peel tannins. Altogether power packed Nuits pinot requiring cellaring. This continued to expand throughout the evening, becoming a group favorite. 16.8+.

(WT081220-08) 18 CHATEAU BLOUIN, BORDEAUX  $11.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; chateau bottled; proprietor Isabelle Valbom, at Arveyres. Sweet and abundant 2018 merlot-rich claret. Euro restraint and reserve nonetheless. The cherry fruit runs deep./ Fully confirmed on the fruit-rich, tannin-controlled palate. A well balanced, flavorful presentation. 16.3+.

(WT081220-09) 15 BARBARESCO, ALASIA  $29.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 14%; by Cantina Araldica; aged two years in large Slavonian oak casks. The usual old time restraints of this are loosened by 2015 ripeness and abundance. Plenty of fruit up front and still the tarry mass in the background. Not a modern nebbiolo despite the ripe vintage./ Classic cherry, tar, and rose suggestions. Like a port, there's that 'grip of the gob', the core of fruit, tar, and tannin. Especially ample for Barbaresco. Destined for the cellar. 16.6+.

(WT081220-10) 13 CHATEAUN EUF DU PAPE, DOMAINE BERTHET-RAYNE  $34.99
08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14%; 65% grenache, 20% mourvedre, 10% cinsault, 5% syrah; organically grown. Long Cork Award. Not as advanced and bouqueted as the other 2013 Chateauneufs we've had on occasion over the last three years. Actually, pretty autistic./ Yeah, lack of bouquet development and retention of tannin upon opening. As the evening progressed, aeration proved its benefits. The bouquet became more expansive, showing a complex of cracked pepper and spice box notes. The texture became more savory. Widely liked by the group, especially at its price point. 16.3+.

08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 14.5%; vines planted in 1881. Heavy Bottle Award. More power than the label suggests. Old vines depth and concentration. That Amador singed fruit quality. American oak char, vanillin, and dill nuances./ Ample mouthful. Super ripe, rich, and long lasting. Youthful, muscular, finely tannic. Definite cellar candidate. 17.0+.

08/12/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13.5%; at Preignac. Honied sweetness. Drying effect of a good level of botrytis. That 2016 Sauternes 'sass' quality./ Yes, deep honey, citrus, pineapple, and tinges of botrytis tea and tobacco. Fine sweet-acid balance. Highly desirable 2016 Sauternes. A big group favorite. 17.1.
