(WT080520-01) 19 VOUVRAY, LE PEU DE LA MORIETTE, DOMAINE PICHOT  $21.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 12%; est. 1770; 'slightly dry'; Daniel Haas selection. Melon, lime, quince, calcaire: the whole package. Harmonious presentation./ Definitely off dry. The acid is coated, but it manages to break through as the wine lengthens on the palate. Very young, but well positioned. 16.6+.

(WT080520-02) 18 MUSCADET SEVRE ET MAINE SUR LIE LE FILS DES GRAS MOUTONS, DOMAINE CLAUDE BRANGER  $15.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE ) 12%; est. 1915; vines average 36 years. Dry and discreet. More about form than fragrance. Good 2018 build./ Rightful sur bois flavors define it Muscadet. Old vines grip. Acid and proper tender core. A classic, really, if slightly understated at this stage. Turns out all it needed was a couple of hours' more aeration to pour its heart out. A big group favorite.16.5+.

(WT080520-03) 18 CHABLIS, DOMAINE JEAN-PAUL & BENOIT DROIN  $28.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; Eric Solomon selection. Big and bold. Shows why some call Muscadet the 'poor man's Chablis'. This is monstrous by comparison. Really lots of nostril-filling dry extract and calcaire./ Ample mouthful of feel and flavor to confirm the nasal impressions. Steely acid. Very, very satisfying bulk. Popular with the group. 17.2.

(WT080520-04) 19 RIOJA ALAVESA ROSADO, BODEGAS OSTATU  $15.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 13.5%; est. 1908. Full scarlet color./ Well, isn't this pretty in pink. Strawberry chiffon. Vanilla-dipped strawberries./ After the gentle nose, surprising brisk and racy on the palate. Unique and harmonious. Sandy Alavesa is great rose country. Very popular with the group; case orders taken. 16.6.

(WT080520-06) 18 BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR, FRANCOIS CARILLON  $27.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; Daniel Haas selection. A lively, round, red-fruit oriented Cote de Beaune pinot. Carillon's well measured approach. Fruit deepens with aeration. Material and harmony./ Oh, the fruit turns deep and dark on the palate. Wonderful extract, fine tannin, flavor concentration. On and on. The palate is superstar material. Very popular with the group. 17.0+.

(WT080520-07) 11 BEAUNE LES GREVES PREMIER CRU, JEAN-CLAUDE BOISSOT  $34.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 11-14%. Beaune pinot's indescribable village definition. It seems to speak for the whole Cote at once. Premier Cru full and more than ample than the average 2011. At a mellow stage of maturity./ Yes, well along. No grey hairs, but no sense in keeping it into 2021. However, it never failed during several hours of aeration, so maybe it's good for a longer run. A gracious Beaune. 17.4.

(WT080520-08) 15 LA BECASSE, LISTRAC  $27.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13.5%; half each cab sauv, merlot. Very elegant for Listrac. Must be from the gravelly section closer to the estuary. Best La Becasse I've tasted, benefitting from the vintage's warmth yet also establishing its own elegant style./ Good Listrac earthy substance and grip, all the while featuring innate La Becasse charm. Real success. Fine tannin promises longevity. However, it took a turn for worse when it was presented to the group a couple of hours later. Not well received. Lucky me. 16.9+.

(WT080520-09) 15 CLOS DES MENUTS, GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION  $32.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14%; 85% merlot, 10% cab sauv, 5% cab franc; Gold Medal - Paris. Fine contrast. Merlot and Saint Emilion abundance. Signs of barrel aging add to the fruit complex and Grand Cru terroir. Writes a book on Saint Emilion./ Dark, dense, sweet, round merlot with good complement of acid and tannin. Splendidly well proportioned and representative of its AOC and classification. Well liked by the group. 17.3+.

(WT080520-10) 17 VACQUEYRAS CUVEE DES DEUX FRERES, CHATEAU DE MONTMIRAIL  $23.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; J. C. Mathes' original container-assemblage site. Wow, Mr. Big! Alcohol fills the nostrils and carries along a rich, ripe compote of fruit complexes. Montmirails used to be meeker. Today's are full blown./ Fully ripe and powerful, without going over the top. For hearty fare, no doubt. 17.0+.

(WT080520-11) 18 ARTEZIN OLD VIN MENDOCINO ZINFANDEL  $16.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 14.8%. Never falters. Always Mendocino black fruited, black peppery. Full bramble sweetness and concentration./ Carries over on the palate; the sweet fruit, the brambly seediness, the peppercorns. Balance of sweetness and power. Old reliable. 17.0.

(WT080520-12) 17 URZIGER WURZGARTEN RIESLING SPATLESE, WEINGUT LOSEN-BOCKSTANZ  $17.99
08/05/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (GERMANY) 8%. Nostril etching acid and extract. Really zingy. Not especially Wurzgarten 'spicy'. More about texture than aroma./ Certainly has fruit sweetness, but mineral extract is to the fore. The acid is a little coated in youth. This has plenty of presence and potential. 16.7+.
