(WT072821-01) BARON-FUENTE GRANDE RESERVE EXTRA BRUT CHAMPAGNE  $36.99
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPARKLING) 12.5%; NM at Charly sur Marne, Aisne dept; stone vs chalk cellar; 60% meunier, 30% chardonnay, 10% pinot noir; .6 g/l dosage. Very dry and dusty./ Rather heavy yeast autolysis effect. Just doesn't sing. The wrong dosage and en tirage time for meunier? I had this at a trade show 2 yrs back and wasn' t enamored of it. Thought I'd better give it a second chance, since I like the brut and demi sec. Nothing's changed. 15.8.

(WT072821-02) 18 FRANKEN SILVANER TROCKEN, SCHIEFERKOPF  $15.99
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (GERMANY) 13%; braille label marks its association with Chapoutier; est. 2009; on shell limestone. Screwcap. SO2 at 10am so I shook it & let to stand open a couple hrs. Much improved now if not totally cured. Good, earthy silvaner nose approaching age 3./ Real silvaner flavor (along with sulphur). Relatively mild acidity of variety and vintage. Take to the table. Two hours later, the group reported the sulphur had cleared totally. 16.2.

(WT072821-03) 19 ROERO ARNEIS SERRA LUPINI, ANGELO NEGRO  $21.99
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13%; est. 1670; 20% cryomaceration; 4 months on lees, with stirring. Good intensity of stone fruit aromas. Angelo scores again./ Flavors further amplify aromatic set. Good glycerol roundness cut through by admirably ripe fruit acidity. Textbook, and a joy to savor. 16.9.

(WT072821-04) 19 POUILLY FUME LES PENTES, DOMAINE SERGE DAGUNEAU  $25.99
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 13.5%; I visited this burly ex-rugger some 35 years ago; today, his daughter runs the show. Cold sample not exuding a lot of aromatic personality upon opening. Properly lower keyed than a Sancerre./ Not much flavor either. Or texture. Later, the tasting group noted it more evocative, if still somewhat short of expectations. 15.5+.

(WT072821-05) 20 MEDITERRANEE ROSE LA CROIX, PEYRASSOL  $17.99
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ROSE) 13%; est. 1204; 'second' wine of this Provence cru; 50% grenache, 40% cinsault, 10% grenache. Sulphur gauze at opening. Pretty pink fruit evident beneath./ Some BBG up front. Can't really get to the heart of this. Nail polish remover finish. Not ready for prime time. After a couple of hours' aeration, the group reported a pleasantly fruity rose wine. 15.0+.

(WT072821-06) 20 GEVREY CHAMBERTIN CLOS PRIEUR, DOMAINE FREDERIC ESMONIN  $52.95
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; winegrowers for generations, the Esmonins began bottling their own wines in 1988; vyd on the south side of the AOC, near Mazis; aged in barrels, 20% new; unfiltered. Full red-black color for burgundy./ Luxurious, well padded pinot with purple and black Nuits cote fruits and not a small measure of oak's warm spices./ Sweet and enticing. Good acidity. A measure of very fine tannin. At 12.5%, I'm not getting a lot of Gevrey power and stature. Regardless, this guy may be on to something. A pleasure to drink now, really. Quelle surprise! 17.4+.

(WT072821-07) 18 AGLIANICO DEL VULTURE PIPOLI, VIGNETI DEL VULTURE  $21.99
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; est. 2009; 50-60 yr old vines at 1300-1800'; 40% aged in 2nd year barriques. Proper dark red violet color./ Power, depth, range, reserve. It does have Barolo stature, if suggesting a warmer clime. Impressive bulk./ Oh, there are barrel supplements too! Flavorful, spicy, complex, and rangy. No harsh tannin obstruction to current drinking with hearty fare. Warrants one of my top compliments: LOADED. Bargain price for all this delivers. 17.6+

(WT072821-08) 18 COTES DU RHONE, CHATEAU DU TRIGNON  $17.99
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%; in the Quiot family for 125 years; 20 year old vines; grenache, syrah, mourvedre. Incredible charm and finesse like I'm not used to experiencing in a CdR, or even a previous Trignon vintage. Its character marks why this was a Robert Mayberry favored source./ Carries over to the palate. Cracked pepper and garrigue. Great equilibrium for current enjoyment. 17.0.

(WT072821-10) 16 CHATEAU MAYNE VIEIL, FRONSAC  $19.99
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; all merlot; 35 yr old vines; 10% barrel aged; Gold Medal - Paris. That's really sleek, purple, linear merlot claret of 2016. Fronsac solidity, forthright-ness. Barrel modulation too./ Yes, this all adds up. Full Fronsac tannins as always in this Chateau's wines. Reveals everything that makes up its background, Wine of place, time, variety, upbringing. Mentally stimulating. Sensual gratification postponed. 16.8+.

(WT072821-11) 15 VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO, FATTORIA DEL CERRO  $19.99
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 3.5%; largest private estate in Montepulciano; 18 months in cooperage; Suckling 92/100. Through all the 2015 fruit ripeness and power, the lift and flair of Vino Nobile gets across. As well as the cherished violets./ Indeed, it's an amalgam of vintage and DOCG, the vintage kinda winning out with its ripe and powerful palate presentation. If not classic, certainly priceworthy and mealtime satisfying. 16.6.

(WT072821-12) 17 MARTIN RAY STAGS LEAP DISTRICT CABERNET SAUVIGNON  $54.95
07/28/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 14.8%; Heavy Bottle Award; all cab sauv; aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% new; Suckling 95/100. Fine Cork Award. Well, the creator and winemaker really lay it on here. A frank, powerful, amply oaked Napa cabernet while, all the same, coming from one of the valley's cooler red-wine AVAs. Very, very splashy nose./ Sweet and spicy vanilla oak. Ample fruit that's not so ripe as to exceed SLD parameters. If you like the style, there's value here, as you could spend multiples of this price and get the same Napa cabernet demonstration. 17.4+.
