(WT071520-01) 2019 MACON VILLAGES VIEILLES VIGNES, DOMAINE JEAN TOUZOT  $12.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%. Upon opening, very green appley. Plenty of malic acid. Still on the sharp side in youth./ Yes, acid edge to the extreme. I'd like to give this a chance to round out some. Takes crispness to the limit. Long aftertaste. Well, apparently, this rounded and filled out further after aeration, because, an hour later, the tasting panel gave it the high marks. Orders taken. 16.3+.

(WT071520-02) 2019 CHEVERNY, DOMAINE DE SALVARD  $17.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 13%; 85% sauvignon blanc, 15% chardonnay; Kermit Lynch selection. Well, quite an expressive nose. Lime and passion fruit. I suppose the chardonnay gives it some cushion./ More citrus and soft tropical fruits. As well as white peach. Really great acidity. And great length. Delicious. A panel favorite. 16.6.

(WT071520-03) 2018 MUSCADET KATHAROS LOUISE CHEREAU, CHEREAU CARRE  $18.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 12.5%; 'sans soufre ajoute'. That usually raises a red flag for me, but other than being pretty dull and relatively high pH, there are no issues./ Where's the flavor? Where's the texture? Underlying suggestion of oxidation; no surprise. The panel was not amused. 13.2.

(WT071520-04) 2019 SAVOIE JONGIEUX ROSE, DOMAINE EUGENE CARREL  $12.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 12.5%. Cheery, pleasant, innocent in youth. Hasn't reached fruition yet./ Yeah, just a bud. The 2018 tasted just a month back was all about what this wine should be. Wait out the 2019. 15.5+.

(WT071520-05) 2019 TOSCANA ROSE TM, TENUTA MONTETI  $14.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY ROSE) 13%; 80% merlot, 20% cabernet franc. Fuller, rounder, richer nose. Hints of merlot red cherry and cabernet franc red raspberry. Distinct differences marked by encepagement, latitute, and altitude./ More power, more give, more voluminous mouthfeel. Still somewhat strapped in for youth. Overall very satisfying and worthy of taking to the table now. 16.4.

(WT071520-06) 2018 COTEAUX BOURGUIGNONS GRANDE RESERVE, LA MAXIMUS  $9.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13.5%; 85% pinot noir, 15% gamay; Gold Medal - Gilbert & Gaillard. This does the job. Rich, round pinot noir suggestive of fruit from both northern and southern limits of the region. I mean, there's a crisp edge and plush center. And the gamay supplies additional vivacity./ Wow, bright and spicy cherry and clove flavors. Anything but traditional; everything about delightful. Deal! 16.3.

(WT071520-07) 2012 CHATEAU PETIT FREYLON CUVEE SARAH, BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR  $12.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13%; 75% cab sauv, 25% merlot. Dark fruited, firm centered 2012 claret, with the cabernet majority furthering both causes. A patina of bottle bouquet, but by no means into a fully mature state at age seven plus./ Rounded with age. Well balanced. But in something of a through, aroma/flavor wise. If I had it in my cellar, I'd keep it there at least another couple of years. Nonetheless, when the panel tasted it after an extra hour's aeration, it put on a full display and was one of the favorites of the evening. 16.4+.

(WT071520-08) 2014 CHATEAU ROLAND LA GARDE TRADITION, BLAYE COTES DE BORDEAUX  $12.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; 80% merlot, 20% cab sauv; eleve en futs de chene. A little reductive stinky to start. Surely more power and depth here. A degree of 2014 surliness persists./ More fruit pleasure on the palate, with that tough 2014 tannin hanging in there. Good cellar prospect. 16.6+.

(WT071520-09) 2016 LUBERON, CHATEAU VAL JOANIS  $17.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14%; syrah, grenache. Well, this is more open armed and has a wider spread. Younger than the last two, but more southern. Seems to be at a sweet spot, aromatically./ Syrah dark berries, grenache red fruit and peppercorn. Harmonious, well crafted, as always here. Tannin yet, including a little green tannin. That's Med 2016. Nose says go, palate says wait. 16.5/16.3+.

(WT071520-10) 2016 CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA SER LAPO, SOC. AGR. MARCHESI MAZZEI  $34.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; 90% sangiovese, 10% merlot. Rich, complex, intriguing range of varietal and barrel impacts. This is one sophisticated, upscale CCR./ Yes, on the palate it spreads WAY out and entertains with multi flavors and plenty of textural range. Tannin under control. Long, complicated finish. Eminently well crafted, balanced. Take it to the table. 17.5.

(WT071520-11) 2009 RIOJA GRAN RESERVA, BODEGAS RAMON BILBAO  $39.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 14%; 90% tempranillo, 5% ea mazuelo, graciano. Geez, deep and complicated. Multi-faceted barrel and bottle bouquets. Richness and ripeness of 2009. Barrel time over obvious oak extracts./ Sweet 2009 fruit balanced by good acid and light fruit and oak tannins. Very, very long finish. Deal. 17.6.

(WT071520-12) 2018 COTES DE GASCOGNE L'ETE GASCON, DOMAINE DE PELLEHAUT  $14.99
07/15/20 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 11%; 80% gros manseng 10% ea chardonnay, petit manseng. The reward! The relief! Oh, what a sumptuous range of peach, apricot, pineapple , lemon custard, and vanilla aromas./ Yes, with great acid to supply lift and refreshment. Less sweet and powerful than, say, Sauternes, this is its own thing. A 'secret' category of wine--sweet Gascogne--that I adore for style and for value. Flavor range confirms aromatics. What a lithe treat in its vernacular. 17.3.
