(WT071421-01) BERNARD GAUCHER RESERVE BRUT CHAMPAGNE  $34.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPARKLING) 12%; RM at Arconville, south of Bar sur Aube; 90% pinot noir, 10% chardonnay; 2 years en tirage; 10 g/l; Jeff Welburn selection. Finish cork swells quickly upon opening; doesn't seem to have been in the bottle very long; that's good. Well, that's Aube all right. Pinot rich, pastry bottle bouquet. Champagne of place. Tells the tale./ The mousse is fine. This Champagne from the south is richer and lower in acid than those from the classic zones. If relatively unsophisticated, it is generous and satisfying. 16.8.

(WT071421-02) 20 LUGANA, SOC. AGR. OTTELLA  $14.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 12.5%; of turbiana, relative of verdicchio; chalky clay soil. Aromatic and spot on definition of the varietal and zone. A spread of white fruits and even some citrus fruits in the mix. Crisp but not sharp. It's well filled too./ Oh, the flavors are even more intense and wide ranging. Very juicy fruit acidity. Plenty of textural spiel. And length. Doesn't get any better than this. 17.4.

(WT071421-03) 19 COLLI TORTONESI PICCOLO DERTHONA TIMORASSO, LA SPINETTA  $29.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13%; estate bottled; indigenous variety on the rise; 25 year old vinyard on marl; native yeasts; cryomaceration; lees aged; initial vintage; rhino label by Albrecht Durer. This has plenty to say also. More subtle stone fruit and flowers aromas, deepened by the extra bottle age. This is also very expressive of its variety. Very attractive in its third year./ Flavorful. Airs of Provencal herbs as well as fruits. More minerality to this one. Good acid too. Very long finish. 16.7.

(WT071421-04) 18 PFALZ ESTATE SCHEUREBE MC TROCKEN, WEINGUT MULLER-CATOIR  $27.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (GERMANY) 12.5%; from gravel soil near Gimmeldinger Mandelgarten Grosse Lage; Terry Theise selection. I promised to open these screwcaps early in the day and then forgot this morning, so there's a little sulphur sting and suppression to this right off. No masking the black currant, lime, and orange blossom characteristics of scheu though./ Flavor wise, not very forthcoming upon opening. Seems in a trough. It's dry, but the acidity is a bit mild given vintage and varietal. Reserve final judgment. 16.1+?

(WT071421-05) 20 MINHO ROSE, NORTICO  $15.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ROSE) 12.5%; 40% ea alvarelhao, pedral, 20% vinhao; vines average age 40 years, on schist and granite; Ole & Obrigado selection. Smells as pretty as it looks. Strawberries and cream. These are first class, aromatic varieties here. Really aims to please./ Palate confirms the pink fruit and adds some floral highlights. Wisp of banana on the finish yet. That will evolve in a matter of weeks. 16.6+.

(WT071421-06) 19 DOLOMITI PINOT NOIR PRENDO, WILHELM WALCH  $17.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 12.5%; est 1869 at Tramin; aged in large Slavonian oak casks. A pleasingly lean and tart take on pinot, which is the usual from these parts. Certainly not severe. There's plenty of varietal character and even an attractive measure of fruit sweetness after aeration. Reads high altitude pinot./ More power, texture, body, and flavor ripeness and intensity than the nose suggests. Filling and lasting. I'm impressed. 16.5+.

(WT071421-07) 17 NUITS SAINT GEORGES VIEILLES VIGNES, DOMAINE DE BELLENE  $64.95
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; vines average 68 years; native yeasts; aged in barrels, 50% new; no fining; Nicolas Potel, winemaker. Well, this is putting on a much better show than last week's NSG dud. Surprisingly racy demeanor. The lighter bodied vintage dilutes its old vines concentration to an extent. AOC validity here; the barrel aging doesn't muck it up. An intriguing, mentally stimulating nose./ Young, shy, more vinosity than terroir at this stage. Good acidity; very light tannin. With some cellar time, I'll bet this will be jumping through hoops. 16.9++.

(WT071421-08) 18 DOMAINE VIRGINIE THUNEVIN, BORDEAUX  $16.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; at Lalande de Fronsac; daughter of Mauvais Garcon Jean-Luc Thunevin; all merlot, vines average 40 years; aged 11 months in barrels, some new. Well, the garagiste Thunevins make 'em big. No holds barred here. All the extra fruit bounty of 2018, tempered and complexed some by barrel aging and by power./ Thoroughly modern claret, New World big and bold. Tannin and astringency need some aging for resolution. 16.4+.

(WT071421-09) 18 CHATEAU CARONNE STE GEMME, CRU BOURGEOIS, HAUT MEDOC  $23.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13.5%; est 1648; at Saint Laurent, west of Pauillac; 60% cab sauv, 34% merlot, 6% petit verdot vines average 30 years; aged a year in barrels, 30% new; owned by the Nony-Borie family along with Ch Labat. Now that's a more refined take. Stature of cabernet, more barrel complex. Even in fruit laden 2018, the sleek, linear composure of a Nony claret comes across./ There's framing to the rich fruit core. Good acid and fine tannin. Exceptionally ageworthy 2018 Left Banker. 16.8+.

(WT071421-10) 19 LANGHE NEBBIOLO MARTINENGA, TENUTE CISA ASINARI DEI MARCHESI DI GRESY  $25.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; est 1797; Martinenga is one of Piemonte's largest monopole crus; from vines 15-40 years old; no barrel aging. This greets me with some relief after a pair of 2018 clarets. The elevation, the variety, the vintage: all support uplift. Plus this guy makes stylish wines. Classic tar and roses aromas./ Tannin masks a lot of that appeal on the palate. Di Gresy is also known for well framed wines. Tannin resolution and bouquet development each call for cellaring. 16.6+.

(WT071421-11) 19 SAINT GUILHEM LA DESERT CARIGNAN VIEILLES VIGNES, LA DOMITIENNE  $14.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; IGP covering a sector of Languedoc north of Montpellier and encompassing Pic St. Loup; on blue marl and fossil deposits; Jeff Welburn selection. Oh, that's a sweet and old vines concentrated, black fruited take on carignan. Black cherry, black pepper, black licorice./ Sweet fruit on the palate too; not pandering though. Accurate and agreeable, if not particularly complicated. Good acid and balance. Won't vie for attention at the table. 16.3.

(WT071421-12) 85 DAO PORTA DOS CAVALEIROS, CAVES SAO JOAO  $44.99
07/14/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (PORTUGAL) 12.5%; est. 1920; 40% jaen, 20% each alfrocheiro, preto de mortagua, 10% each tinta roriz, baga; granite and schist at 1500'; library release. Looks like it was recorked upon release. Dark color./ Dry and brooding, granite saturated Dao classic. Deep, wide, complex and wholly classic. Everything last week's 2010 Rioja wasn't./ Mouth coating, mouth filling. Complete flavor and texture presence. No tannin to resolve. The framing is supplied by dry mineral extract. I suppose this will prove timeless. Pair well, and there's no need to wait though. A privilege to taste. 18.4.
