- (SPAIN) 12%; est. 1768; highest estate & vineyard in Penedes at 1400 ft; parellada, macabeo, chardonnay, malvasia de sitges; aged on fine lees. Some graininess of maturity. Plus seckel pear. Quite full./ Full of body, richness, and expression. Good acid, mineral, and lees effect. The maturity is flattering on the palate. Long, 'chewy', satisfying aftertaste. Dinner wine with poultry. (WT070721-02) 19 CRETE ASSYRTIKO, SOC. AGR. ALEXAKIS  $16.99
07/07/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (GREECE) 13.5%; largest family-owned winery in Crete; at Heraklion; high elevation vineyards; aged 3 months sur lie. Not much aroma or presence on the nose upon opening. The group reported this blossomed after aeration./ Quite large in the mouth. That Chablis like calcaire resemblance. More textural than aromatic properties. Which makes it versatile at the table. Long, savory finish. 15.8

(WT070721-03) 19 BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY VIEILLES VIGNES, JEAN CHARTRON  $26.99
07/07/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; est. 1859; vines planted between 1944 & 1991; aged 6 months in barrels, 20% new. Oh, this has body and character. Old vines chardonnay intensity. Admirable barrel extras, as Jean Chartron is so skilled at interweaving among the fruit and terroir strands./ Quite full bodied thanks to old vine and barrel extract support. Good acidity and balance. Large for the vintage. Overachiever. Wine of the night for me and several others. 17.4.

(WT070721-04) 19 NAHE RIESLING TROCKEN, WEINGUT KRUGER-RUMPF  $21.99
07/07/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (GERMANY) 12%; from Munsterer Kapellenberg & Dautenpflanzer; vines 15-25 years old; Terry Theise selection. Speaks riesling in lower Nahe language. That is, it's not a keen sort. The roundness of the richer terroir. Well crafted./ Lime and apricot flavors. Some terpenes forming, and they're positive. Brisker acid than the nose suggested. That's Kruger. Well textured thanks to dry extract. Long, burnished finish. 16.7.

(WT070721-05) 20 COTES DE THAU ROSE, DOMAINE MONTMASSOT  $14.99
07/07/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ROSE) 12.5%; cinsault, grenache from slopes above the Etang (lagoon) de Thau SW of Montpellier. Sweet and bountiful Med fruit, not without an acid edge to keep it crisp, Well, this is the third screwcap, and sulphur hasn't spoiled my day./ Yes, sweetly fruity and flavorful. Strawberries. A little banana on the back taste yet. That won't take long to process. 16.3.

(WT070721-06) 15 NUITS SAINT GEORGES, LAURENT DUFOULEUR  $59.95
07/07/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; est. 1830; natives of NsG; vineyard north of the village, near AOC Vosne Romanee. Quality cork and top fill./ A bully, black fruited NSG with the body and warmth of the vintage despite the modest alcohol statement. A bit inelegant at this stage, not exactly spreading a peacock's tail of fruit and terroir definitions./ Flavors are modest and blurred. There's full, fine tannin. Dark cherry and plum well up on the aftertaste. This is likely in a developmental trough. 15.8+.

That's a bountiful 2018 merlot nose with black-fruit cabernet bracing. Well crafted./ Yes, sweet 2018 merlot dominant claret. Some cabernet blackberry and cassis on the back taste. Fine tannin. I can see the medal. Good value. 16.3.

(WT070721-08) 16 CHATEAU LABAT, CRU BOURGEOIS, HAUT MEDOC  $21.99
07/07/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13%; est. 1648 at St. Laurent; half each cab sauv, merlot; owned by the Nony-Borie family along with Ch. Caronne Ste. Gemme. This rings with gravel spawned cabernet vitality. Black currant and blueberry. Good 2016 framing and sleek texture./ Upon opening, quite a bit of tannin postpones the full performance. After it airing a couple of hours, the group reported it more expressive flavor and texture wise. A well balanced, well bred, complicated claret. Another wine of the night on several score sheets. 17.0+.

(WT070721-09) 18 CAHORS MALBEC LE GAMOTIN, CLOS DE GAMOT  $29.99
07/07/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; est. 1610; Famille Jouffreau; all malbec of a unique clone; vines 40-120 years old on the 2nd & 3rd terraces above the Lot; aged 18+ months in large cooperage; Alain Junguenot selection. Wow, that's deep and black Cahors. But not stodgy. The fruit is 2018 sweet. It's just that there's so much material here./ Yes, substantial, sweet, tannic, and altogether well balanced. A singular (not 'modern') Cahors that's serviceable now and will perform new tricks as it matures. 16.9+.

(WT070721-10) 18 BANDOL, LA BASTIDE BLANCHE  $28.99
07/07/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; est. 1972; 72% mourvedre, 20% grenache, 6% cinsault, 1% each syrah, carignan; aged 18 months in cooperage; unfiltered; Peter Weygandt selection. Oh, that purple black color and purple fruited mourvedre classic, redolent of boysenberry. The fruit amplification of 2018 is wholly flattering to this wine. Bandols can be resistant in youth, though seldom Bastide Blanche./ The tannin is coated with sweet fruit. The acidity, however, performs a balancing act. As does a secret core of mourvedre concentration that has a positive astringent property. 17.4+.

(WT070721-11) 18 PRIORAT LA CARTUJA, VINOS DEL ATLANTICO  $19.99
07/07/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 14.5%; single vineyard on llicorella slate at 800 ft; 70% garnacha, 30% mazuelo; aged 6 months in foudres; Ole & Obrigado selection. One of the darkest-faced grenaches I've nosed. Still, it's not compact. It has grenache sweetness, power, breadth./ Oh, a juicy, red fruited grenache flavor, plenty sweet too in 2018. Fine tannin draws out the finish. Everything here is up to snuff. 17.0+.

Good cork, barely stained. Dark color of 2010 despite the lengthy barrel sojourn./ Quite the woody and evolved bouquet. A pitchy core of oak. Singular./ Oaky and well bouqueted. Casting disparate signals. I don't know that I'd count on it much longer. 16.5+/-.
