(WT062321-01) LETE-VAUTRAIN 204 BRUT CHAMPAGNE  $39.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPARKLING) 12.5%; RM at Chateau-Thierry; est. 1960s; acquired by Baron-Fuente in 2011; 50% pinot meunier, 25% ea chardonnay, pinot noir; 3 yrs en tirage. Apple blossom and bread dough: meunier leads the way. Meunier sweet fruit aroma and full revelation of en tirage toasty bouquet./ Full, flavor, body, yeast autolysis character. Not a lot of finesse; this is not Premier Cru terroir. Will be enjoyed more at the table than as an aperitif. 16.9.

(WT062321-02) 19 ALSACE PINOT BLANC, ANDRE SCHERER  $14.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE ALSACE) 12.5%; at Husseren les Chateaux, high above the Alsace plain; Peter Weygandt selection. Very cold sample. Nose understated yet valid. Clear and green pinot blanc fruit with no rough edges. I like it./ Warms in mouth and expands in flavor. Textbook varietal character without frills and fancy stuff. Proper acidity level for the variety. Dry, smooth, well balanced. Wide applications. 16.5.

(WT062321-03) 18 CHABLIS, DOMAINE DES GENEVES  $24.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNCY) 12.5%; est. 1973 at Fleys; Jeanne-Marie de Champs selection. Shows more age for sure. There are still funky sulphur issues here, so I'm not getting a clear picture of the terroir./ As usual, less sulphur on the palate, so I can read the fruit at least. Hope it lifts more with airing, and the group can give me fuller revelation. Indeed, it improved into the next day, displaying calcaire, green apple, and lees aging, ultimately earning a 16.3 rating.

(WT062321-04) 18 PAESTUM FIANO PIAN DI STIO, AZ. AGR. SAN SALVATORE HALF LITER  $36.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; 'Grand Cru' vyd at 1800 feet on the Stio plateau in southern Campania; Wine & Spirits 93; Parker 92. It's not as splashy at age 2.5 as earlier vintages we tasted at younger ages. Again, very cold sample./ More flavorful than aromatic, thanks to warming in mouth. Another wine that improved for many hours after, showing fruit, acid, freshness, extract, richness, layering, and serious length. 17.0+.

(WT062321-05) 20 CHINON ROSE, DOMAINE DOZON  $18.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ROSE) 12.5%; south of Chinon on the left bank of the Vienne; from vines under 30 yrs old; Michael Corso selection. Finally, a full, come hither aromatic profile. Red raspberry, strawberry, bramble patch./ Just a vestige of bubble gum to banish via a few weeks' aging. And accompanying astringency. Regardless, this has a lot of presence, persistence, abundance. One of the fuller bodied Chinon roses. Belies its modest alcohol statement. Wants food. Popular with the group. 16.7+.

(WT062321-06) 18 RIBEIRA SACRA PEZA DO REI, ADEGA CACHIN  $21.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 13%; vineyard on 60% incline south-facing slope of slate terraces; 85+% men cia plus three local varieties; unwooded. What an intriguing nose! Yes, there's a suggestion of the usual mencia reductiveness. That will blow off. So much more here as well. A potpourri of spices that suggest barrel aging, but no such thing. Deep, dark, secretive, almost menacing./ Sweet, round 2018 fruit and all those extra feels and flavors. Indeed, complex. Fine tannin to help it to full fruition. I crave uniqueness, and this wine has it. 16.9+.

(WT062321-07) 18 BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR, CHANSON PERE  $24.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; est 1750; bought by Bollinger early this century, which brought in Gilles de Courcel to manage the winery and Jean Pierre Confuron the vineyards; from estate lands in Cote de Nuits and southern Cote de Beaune; whole cluster fermented. A beautiful black fruit pinot statement that has Nuits leanings. So do Santenays, so that could be the other component./ Fruit clarity, lots if material. Full, fine tannin, both fruit and oak derived. Most cellarworthy. Seems things have changed around sleepy old Chanson! 16.6+.

(WT062321-08) 18 EUGENE WINE CELLARS STRINGTOWN WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR  $21.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 13.5%; named for bygone towns strung out along the Oregon Trail; EWC is a grower and manager of hundreds of acres of OR vineyards since the 1970s. No SUS, but mighty quiet, aromatically. Valid pinot cherry and spice./ Round pinot palate with good power, acid, texture. Fine tannin. The foundation is here. Cellar further. Or aerate. This blossomed into quite the popular pinot later in the evening, remaining subtle, while opening a peacock's tail of complexity. 16.5+

(WT062321-09) 18 VALPOLICELLA RIPASSO CLASSICO SUPERIORE, CANTINA DI NEGRAR  $21.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; made the first amarone, in 1936; 70% corvina, 15% corvinone, 15% rondinella; aged 12-18 months in cooperage. This is real ripasso. Power, presence, and dried fruit impact. Dark as its name./ Yes, balance of sweetness and force. The oak is an important player too. Big time, mouthfilling ripasso player with a lasting aftertaste. Writes the book on ripasso. For full fare, or the cellar. Popular with the group. 17.1+.

(WT062321-10) 18 ROSSO DI MONTEPULCIANO, AZ. AGR. POLIZIANO  $18.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 14%; est. 1961; 80% prugnolo gentile, 20% merlot; half aged 10 months in large French oak casks. I thought this might be the wrong order, but no. This is a whopper of a Monte rosso. All the ripe, rich fruit of the vintage, a positive measure of that thanks to the merlot, I'd venture./ Yes, this surpasses the norms of the DOC, whether you like it or not. I like it for what it is. Really powerful and succulent. Big time mouth presence here too. Wow. 17.1+.

(WT062321-11) 18 GEHRICKE RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY ZINFANDEL  $29.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U. S. WEST COAST) 14.9%; Heavy Bottle Award; 5% petite sirah; from Ponzo Vineyard old vines; 14 months in French oak barrels. Purple black color./ Show Wine. Ample oak spice potpourri. Full power. Succulent old vines fruit. Yet there's still an unescapable measure of RRV zinfandel elegance, class. It's no Joe Palooka./ All of that, all at once. The fruit concentration, the oak spice spectrum, the power, and the class. Lengthy, complicated finish. Pretty awesome stuff. 18.6.

(WT062321-12) 18 PFALZ RIESLING FEINHERB, WEINGUT MULLER-CATOIR  $26.99
06/23/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (GERMANY) 11%; est. 1744; from lower slopes of several estate vineyards; Terry Theise selection. Screwcap, so I opened this early to taste. Quite a lot of spritz, so I wasn't sure if that or SO2 was tingling my nostrils. So shook and left stand open awhile. Now, I still get some sulphur suppression but more Pfalz riesling fruit and terroir than earlier./ Sweeter than the feinherb norm; glad I placed it last in the set. Not as extract saturated as I expect in an M-C. Vintage talking? 16.6.
