(WT061621-01) 13 IRON HORSE ESTATE GREEN VALLEY CLASSIC VINTAGE BRUT  $36.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 13.5%; 68% pinot noir, 32% chardonnay; Green Valley is a very cool sector of Russian River Valley.. For a California sparkler of this age, very 'new' smelling. Nose spells the proportions of red and white fruit. The bottle bouquet is admirable./ On the high side of brut (or low side of acidity)--a California vs Champagne situation. Lots of leesy, toasty bottle bouquet personality. Delivers. 16.7.

(WT061621-02) 19 BASILICATA GRECO - FIANO PIPOLI, VIGNETI DEL VULTURE  $19.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 12.5%; 60 - 40; bush trained vines at 1600-2000 feet, planted 1985-1990; greco harvested late Nov; 6 months sur lie. Upon opening, mercaptan aura takes some delving to get beneath it. The goods are there: the greco fruits and florals, the fiano honey. A worthy amalgam./ Very racy fruit acidity really sets this up for food. A certain salinity on the lips. This became more of a showoff after additional aeration, revealing a potpourri of fruits and flowers, and it became a group favorite. 16.5+/16.9..

(WT061621-03) 18 CHABLIS MONTEE DE TONNERRE 1ER CRU, DOMAINE SERVIN  $39.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; arguably the top Chablis Premier Cru; adjacent to the Grands Crus hillside; Vinous Media 93+/100; Peter Weygandt selection. Bold. Full measure of MdT weight and grandeur. 2018 stacked. More about bulk and presence than about aromatics./ Good 2018 extract. The necessary acidity for balance. A shame to serve now; there's so much more to come. 17.4+.

(WT061621-04) 18 FLORINA MALAGOUZIA TURTLES VINEYARD, ALPHA ESTATE  $19.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (MACEDONIA) 13%; in NW Macedonia; vyd at 2100 feet, facing northwest; 2 months sur lie. Upon opening, some scratchy SUS still. Hopefully, this will blow off in time for group enjoyment. Varietal depth, race, and distinction down inside./ Much greater flavor magnification on the palate. No scratch. A noble white varietal, worth saving. The one we had a few weeks ago was more-ish. Also cost 1.5 times more. 16.2+/16.5+.

(WT061621-05) 20 BANDOL ROSE, DOMAINE LA BASTIDE BLANCHE  $25.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ROSE) 14%; 71% mourvedre, 14% grenache, 12% cinsault, 3% clairette; Peter Weygandt selection. Full, rich, round, noble, generous. The early harvest brings this to fruition sooner than, say, the 2018. Just saturated with strawberry and pink peach./ Well, the palate is still a little reductive. Not as expressive in flavor as in aroma. A couple of hours' aeration will likely take care of that. And it did. Very popular with the group. Orders taken. 17.1/16.7+.

(WT061621-06) 12 BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR, MAISON L'ENVOYE  $26.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; from 3 growers near Beaune & in the Hautes Cotes; including fruit from Savigny Marconnets; aged a year in seasoned barrels. Medium to medium dark; a little ruddy./ Sweet pinot fruit. Some 2012 reluctance remains. Surprisingly unevolved./ The palate remains a mystery too. Close and tart and well framed 2012 style. Structurally young, aromatically betwixt and between. Enigmatic. Opened up more over the next couple of hours and earned fans. 16.2+.

(WT061621-07) 18 DOGLIANI, PODERI LUIGI EINAUDI  $21.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; dolcetto from crus San Giacomo, San Luigi and Madonna delle Grazie; Neil Empson selection. Former president of Italy, and a dolcetto master. Not an easy going style. While 2018 provides good fruit sweetness, there's plenty of evident framework here too./ Yeah, he really knows how to extract a lot of serious material out of dolcetto. Not without dolcetto lift now, but don't be afraid to cellar it; much more to come. 16.9+.

(WT061621-08) 17 MONTSANT L'EFECTE VOLADOR, JOSEP GRAU VITICULTOR  $17.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 14%; family estate; garnacha, samso, & syrah; 30-50 yrs old; on slate & granite; half aged in French foudres & barriques. Seems to be pretty well along in bouquet development in early maturing 2017. An accommodating style of Montsant./ Well, the palate has a large measure of freshness and vitality I wasn't expecting to find. And a measure of tannin too. One unique, serious, and adventuresome Montsant. Totally mealworthy. Popular with the group. 16.3/16.6+.

(WT061621-09) 16 CHATEAU BOUTISSE GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION  $39.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; from the clay-limestone plateau; barrel fermented & aged; 70% merlot, 20% cab sauv, 5% ea cab franc, carmenere; aged in barrels, 40% new. Dark red violet./ Merlot richness, cabernet blackness. More cab sauv on the Right Bank now, what with higher temperatures. Barrel aging shows too. And a modicum of bottle bouquet. 2016 linear style./ Very 2016 sleek. Oak weavings. Well tailored, fine-grained tannins. Good acidity. Flavor- and texture-wise, well balanced. Good cellar candidate. A group favorite. 17.3+.

(WT061621-10) 15 GIGONDAS, DOMAINE LA HAUTE MARONE  $25.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; 75% grenache, 13% syrah, 12% mourvedre on steep, terraced vyds; half aged 21 months in 2nd, 3rd, & 4th yr barrels. Bold, sweet, powerful 2015 Gigondas. Fits the pattern to a T. Some bouquet starting to form./ Oh, yes, there's a mellowness coming on with bottle age too. Plus barrel aged nuttiness. Right fair price, I'd venture. 16.9+.

(WT061621-11) 18 DURKHEIMER NONNENGARTEN RIESLING KABINETT, WEINGUT DARTING LITER  $19.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (GERMANY) 10.5%; est. 1780; estate bottling since 1989; Helmut Darting apprenticed at Muller-Catoir; Terry Theise selection. Some SUS. Also a hint of bouquet formation. Nothing particularly striking about this perennially well priced bottling. Just old reliable./ Yeah, there's the sulphur vying with bottle bouquet, the latter gaining the upper hand on the palate. Adequate acidity for balance and refreshment. 16.3.

(WT061621-12) 18 AYLER KUPP RIESLING SPATLESE, VOLS  $39.99
06/16/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (GERMANY) 9.5%; from the legendary Altenhofen estate, purchased by Helmut Plunien in 2009; on blue slate; Terry Theise selection. Well, there's even stinkier SUS here. This week, we've reverted to same old, same old: whites compromised by sulphur. Which persisted throughout the evening in this spatlese./ As usual, it's less oppressing on the palate. Some unique terroir statements suggest themselves, including white peach and tangelo. Fully sweet Saar spatlese; likely auslese must weight.15.0++/16.6+.
