(WT051221-01) 20 PICPOUL DE PINET, JADIX  $12.99
05/12/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%; on chalky clay embedded with fossilized oysters, quartz, and gravel; picpoul has been grown on the plateau above the Thau lagoon since Roman times; 'picpoul' = 'lipstinger'. This is right. This has max personality for this often prosaic, understated grape variety. Pushes out those green apple and legume things that brings to mind a gruner veltliner./ Flavor intensity confirms. Blind, I'd say I was drinking gruve. Except the acidity is higher and gives it a lot of textural play. Earns its name. Long, expressive finish. 16.6.

(WT051221-02) 19 DAO BRANCO SELECAO DO ENOLOGO PEDRA CANCELA, JOAO COELHO GOUVELA  $14.99
05/12/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (PORTUGAL) 12%; 40% encruzado, 30% each cerceal branco, malvasia fina. That's a unique aromatic set. The terroir and first two varieties give it distinct soil inflections. Malvasia contributes certain floral overtones./ Plays out the same on the palate. Pretty heavy-weight table white. No aperitif, that's for sure. This continued to fill out into the following day. 16.3+.

(WT051221-05) 18 PUGLIA PRIMITIVO CALX FUSO21, CANTINE POLVANERA  $16.99
05/12/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 12.5%; limestone soil; unfined, unfiltered. Medium to medium dark./ The producer's intention is to make a bistro style of wine, and he's nailed it. Red rather than black fruit, and inviting freshness and lift./ Medium bodied and fully fruity. Good acid. Long and flavorful finish. Rangy mealtime options. Near absence of tannin, so could probably be cooled down a bit for additional refreshment. 16.2.

(WT051221-08) 18 MONTEPULCIANO D'ABRUZZO, AZ. AGR. TIBERIO  $19.99
05/12/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 14%; massale selection vines averaging 56 years; at 1200 feet. Dark red violet color. Impressive!/ A beautiful and intense montepulciano nose, replete with that cherished but elusive aroma of violets. Wow, this is really well concentrated!/ Blockbuster palate, dense and deep, flavorful, tannin laden. This is pushing Pepe and Valentini at a fraction of the price. Good cellar potential. 17.0+.

(WT051221-09) 17 CHIANTI CLASSICO, CARPINETO  $21.99
05/12/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13%; 90% sangiovese, 10% canaiolo; minimum 6 months in oak casks. Quite open and mature going into age four, thanks to time in cooperage and 2017's forward nature. Sangiovese transformed by oak aging./ Yes, the palate has mellowed nicely. Good acidity and still considerable fine grained tannin. Spicy nuances. Needs another year or two to peak out. 16.6+.

Dark ruby./ Wow, big time fruit intensity and exceptional oak endowments for the second wine of a Bordeaux Superieur Chateau. Grand and ambitious stuff./ Abundant fruit and oak concentrations. Tannin on teeth. Broad, deep, complex. A sleeper for the cellar. Very popular with the group. 16.9+.

(WT051221-11) 13 RIOJA RESERVA, MARQUES DE RISCAL  $21.99
05/12/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 14%; at El Ciego in Alavesa; 96% tempranillo, 4% graciano; aged 2 years in American oak barrels. Had to do a Durand save on this cork after my table-mount opener pulled the center out of it. No issues with what's in the bottle though (other than the cork!).Sweet and gentle, uplifted Alavesa style of reserva. Alavesa is higher altitude than Rioja Alta and has a lot of sand./ Yes distinctly Alavesa and Riscal. The wines are not particularly demonstrative in 'youth', but oh how well they last and improve in the cellar. Full faith in this well balanced 2013. 16.7++.
