(WT032421-01) 18 WACHAU DURNSTEIN GRUNER VELTLINER, PICHLER-KRUTZLER  $27.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (AUSTRIA) 12%; formed in 2006 after a marriage of two winegrowing families; one of Wachau's top family estates; Peter Weygandt selection. That's gruner apple and legume. Big time concentration and depth./ A steely ring. Don't run into that often. Very dry. Quite the statuesque gruner veltliner. Long finish. Cellarworthy? 16.9+.

(WT032421-02) 18 WACHAU LOIBNER GRUNER VELTLINER FEDERSPIEL, F. X. PICHLER  $34.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (AUSTRIA) 12%; Austria's greatest white-wine maker; federspiel is a Wachau term for a wine from grapes ripe enough to achieve 11.5% to 12.5% alcohol when fermented dry; Peter Weygandt selection. Whoa! Way more spread. Transcends mere gruner fruit definitions. Depth, intricacy, allure, nobility./ This is a softer wine. No metal, more give. More in keeping with the vintage nature. Long, flavorful aftertaste that spells the varietal. 17.3.

(WT032421-03) 19 TOURAINE SAUVIGNON LE GRAND VINCENT, LES VIGNERONS DES COTEAUX ROMANAIS  $12.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 13%; cooperative of 20 winegrowers founded in 1957 at St. Romain sur Cher. Cher neat take on sauvignon. Cool, racy, penetrating. Lime and green mango. I appreciate its Euro discretion./ Flavors not yet as forthcoming as aromas when the bottle was first open and very cold. Later, they began to fill out. Acid on th3e gentle side. Appreciated by the group at its price point.. 16.5+.

(WT032421-04) 18 HERAULT BLANC DESIR, LA CROIX GRATIOT  $12.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13%; night harvested grapes, 70% viognier, 15% chardonnay, 12% roussanne, 3% muscat; generations-old estate at Pinet that began bottling its own wines in 2004. The cork smelled of viognier right away. The nose is viognier dominant. Chardonnay body, filler. Roussanne fatness. Muscat sneaks in at the end./ Flavors and textures unassuming upon opening, then built in breadth and intensity over the coming three hours. Shows viognier and roussanne glycerol viscosity. 16.4.

(WT032421-05) 16 BROUILLY GRAND CRU, DOMAINE ANNIE ET BERNARD LONGEFAY  $23.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; southernmost Grand Cru; vines 40-110 years old; in 2000, the Longefays established a long term lease of 18 acres of the best vineyards of Chateau de la Chaize; whole cluster fermentation; no barrel aging. A very suave and savory Brouilly at this stage. Aromatic, broad, sweet, well textured. All 2016 early resistance has faded away./ Medium bodied. Flavors rather muddled and acid kinda mild. The nose is at its peak; the palate may be a bit past. Or in a trough. 17.0/ 16.1+/-?

(WT032421-06) 17 VAR PINOT NOIR DOMAINE DE VALMOISSINE, LOUIS LATOUR  $16.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13.5%; clay and limestone soils of the Coteaux du Verdon at 500 meters' elevation in Haute Provence; 15 year old vines yielding two tons per acre; harvested at the same time as Latour's Cote de Beaune vineyards. A unique take on pinot noir thanks to special terroir. It's pinot noir all right, sweet and cherry scented. And really quite rich for the vintage, perhaps due to very low yields./ Medium bodied as always. Good flavor, acid, balance, length. Attractive dab of tar that low latitude pinots can carry. Fine tannin for bouquet potential. Bravo. Keep it up, Louis. 16.6+.

(WT032421-07) 16 CHIANTI RUFINA, VILLA DI VETRICE  $14.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 12.5%; 11th century roots; sangiovese, canaiolo, colorino; aged 6 months in barrels. Oh, that's fresh and Rufina black, cool, racy. Deep seated fruit concentration too. And the vintage's satin texture and bouquet potential./ Yes, another winner in the series, playing well above its price level. Definitely shows the 2016 style versus the riper, more forward 2015. Now or later. 16.6+.

(WT032421-08) 19 CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE LES DEMOISELLES, CHATEAU DE LA FONT DU LOUP  $39.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; 80% grenache, 20% syrah; on the north side of the La Crau plateau; sandy soil yields elegant wines; a young-vines cuvee. In style. Cool, elegant, peppery, and brown-spicy. First time I've had this cuvee. It certainly delivers heart on sleeve sweet-strawberry grenache allure, despite being the youngest Chateauneuf I've ever tasted./ Sweet and smooth and flavorful. No resistance to current service. Fully justified cuvee. Congrats, An ne-Charlotte! 17.4.

(WT032421-09) 19 CLOS DE NAPA OAKVILLE CABERNET SAUVIGNON  $28.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 14.5%; 75% cab sauv, 25% merlot; aged 15 months in French oak barrels, 60% new. Plenty of 2019 flash and countering Oakville discretion. Paradoxical, but true. This is really well bred Oakville cabernet given the subtle, spicy oak embellishments it deserves. 2019 fruit soaks it all up./ Sweet fruit, spicy oak, Oakville distinction, true harmony. Now or later. Actually, a sleeper for the cellar. 17.2+.

(WT032421-10) 13 TRINITE ESTATE ACAIBO SONOMA RED  $64.95
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 13.9%; project of Gonzague & Claire Lurton; 24 acre estate in the Chalk Hill area; 56% cab sauv, 34% merlot, 10% cab franc; 12-18 months in new French oak barrels. About the most powerful and concentrated California cabernet vintage this century. This shows ripeness, strength, intensity, and barrel and bottle bouquet at age seven. The oak has fully merged. Euro winemaker inclinations keep it from going over the top./ Ripe, rich, full bodied, mouth-coating. Still some tannin to shed. Enjoyed--and respected--by the Europhiles in the group. 17.7+

Merged and mellowed after seven years. Bottle bouquet well formed now./ Yes, well along in bouquet and suavity. Put it to use with a fish and tomato stew. 16.3.

(WT032421-12) 15 TAYLOR FLADGATE LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORTO  $23.99
03/24/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FORTIFIED) 20%; bottled in 2020, marking the 50th anniversary of Taylor's pioneering first LBV, the 1970. Black, sweet, and very powerful in a Taster glass. Taylor through and through. Almost as statuesque as a Vintage but less tannic and more along for extra time in cooperage./ Sweet and strong. Taylor black fruited all the way. Though made to be put to use, I suspect this will become more complex and revealing with additional bottle age. 17.0+.
