(WT031021-01) 19 FRIULI AQUILEIA PINOT GRIGIO, TENUTA CA' BOLANI  $14.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; 999 cypress trees frame the estate. Sulphur, apple, and melon. Pretty fair body./ Padded acid. Wet wool. This is going to need further aeration. It continued to suffer from sulphur issues through two tasting panel sessions, the second 3 hours after it was opened. Yet the attendee who took the remainder home with him reported it revealing and delightful with dinner. How many us can wait that long?! Come on, winemakers, lighten up! 15.5+.

(WT031021-02) 19 ALTO ADIGE TERLANO SAUVIGNON WINKL, CANTINA TERLAN  $29.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; produced since 1956; Winkl is on sand and porphyric gravel; lees aged 6 months. Soaring lime peel and mango aromatics. Persistent, penetrating., cool. What give!/ Lime, tangelo, and mango. Proper level of acidity for balance and refreshment. What a taste treat! Flavors go on and on. No other sauvignon quite like it. Very popular with the tasting panel. 18.0.

(WT031021-03) FRANCAIS GAMAY RAISINS GAULOIS, MARCEL LAPIERRE  $18.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; vines under 20 years old, most all within the Morgon AOC. A very lithe, pretty, and pure gamay nose. I can see the Morgon statement, lightly spoken by intent./ Not as much flavor and texture as expected. Medium bodied. Some earlier versions have been more-ish. I probably should have cooled this down for refreshment; I don't think that will retard the nose much.. 16.4/16.0.

(WT031021-04) 16 JOSEPH SWAN CUVEE DE TROIS RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY PINOT NOIR  $36.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 12.8%. Wow! There's not another pinot like it...except another from Swan! This has less rusticity than some earlier vintages. The varietal statement is purer, and more precise. The elevage has added exciting complexity and detail. It's deep, tarry, spicy./ Yeah, pedigree of origin, brilliance of upbringing. All that and moderate alcohol to boot. If you're tired of same-old, same-old (actually 'new') California pinots, open a bottle of this legend. Very popular with the tasting panel. 17.5.

(WT031021-05) 18 VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO LUCCHINE, AGR. TEDESCHI  $15.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13%; Lucchine = vineyard name; 25% Corvina, 25% Corvinone, 30% Rondinella, 10% Molinara, 10% Rossignola, Negrara, Dindarella. One may have questioned my serving order, but this Valpol doesn't back down. The black fruit aromas are strong and forthcoming. While retaining the proper level of moderation./ Plenty of richness, body, and flavor for a Valpol without dried fruit added. Yet these don't exceed my norms for classic, old time Valpolicella. With juicy acidity. Thoroughly satisfying, and versatile at the table. 16.9.

(WT031021-06) 15 VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO RISERVA, CARPINETO  $31.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; 90% prugnolo gentile, 10% canaiolo; aged 2 years in cooperage and 1 in bottle before release. Deeper and more robust than the Vino Nobile norm in balmy 2015, which invites plenty of barrel influence to temper and to spread out the fruit surge. Deep, broad, and totally complex. Vino Nobile and a Half!/ Oh, boy, exceptional body for the DOCG, and still plenty of fine fruit tannins. Lengthy, unrelenting. Awesome! Wine of the Night on many a panel scorecard. 17.5+.

(WT031021-07) 18 ALENTEJANO TOURIGA NACIONAL, HERDADE ROCIM  $16.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (PORTUGAL) 14%; fermented and aged a year in French oak barrels, 1/3 new. Whoa! An aromatic fanfare! Touriga nacional purple and black fruits amped up in lush 2018. Want the definition of the varietal? Here it is, front and center./ Equally lush and sprawling on the palate. Regional warmth plus high altitude, cool night acid foil. Show wine. At a modest tariff (oh, please not to mention that name!). 17.1+.

(WT031021-08) 18 L'HERTRE, CASTILLON COTES DE BORDEAUX  $34.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; 95% merlot, 5% cab franc; owned by the Thienponts of Vieux Chateau Certan and Le Pin; barrel aged 15 months. Well, this is good Castillon terrior (an eastern extension of the Saint Emilion cote) and Grand Cru Classe elevage. Folks are going to have to learn that Castillons nurtured in this fashion are worth over thirty bucks. Ripe 2018 fruit and intricate barrel nuances./ Full of 2018 merlot richness and savor. And so finely imparted barrel embellishments. I'm in awe. 17.6+.

(WT031021-09) 18 BABYLONSTOREN NEBUKADNESAR SIMONSBERG-PAARL RED  $31.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SOUTH AFRICA) 14.5%; 50% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 15% cabernet franc, 7% petit verdot, and 3% malbec; aged 23 months in new French oak barrels. Wow, a lot of heavy hitting reds for a relatively warm day. High was to be 61 when I picked these; it's well exceeded that. The power and fruit material here is enough to absorb all that new oak impact. There's a successful merger here; no overt oakiness on top./ Yes, sweet and ripe and strong fruit of its Paarl origin leavened by barrel time and extracts. Big, big wine for hearty fare. And balanced through and through. 17.5+.

(WT031021-10) 19 COTES DU RHONE CUVEE VINCENT, DOMAINE DE CHATEAUMAR  $17.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; all syrah; 45+ year old vines in two parcels bordering Chateauneuf du Pape. Gads, when are we going to stop putting the pedal to the metal? Yet another large and insistent nose. It's big, black, old vines southern Rhone style syrah to the max./ Yes, mouthfilling and coating. Well tempered power. Good acidity. Very fine grained tannins. I can see the popularity of this cuvee. 16.9+.

(WT031021-11) 17 LIRAC, CHATEAU MONT REDON  $25.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; grenache, syrah,, mourvedre; aged 18 months, 1/3 in piece, 2/3 in vat. Come on now, not another big boy! Black color./ Husky build for a Lirac rouge. Runs deep, firm, Mont Redon traditional. Barrel age influence without barrel leachings./ Yeah, large scale Lirac, still with the cooler set of varietal interpretations that Right Bank appellations offer. Admirable in all respects. Worthy for both table and cellar. 17.0+.

(WT031021-12) 18 MOSEL RIESLING SPATLESE MOSEL SLATE, WEINGUT MONCHHOF - ROBERT EYMAEL  $27.99
03/10/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (GERMANY) 8.5%; from steep slopes above Erden and Urzig. Some fitzer aroma of bottle development doesn't obscure the terroir statements of Erden slate walnut husk and Urzig 'spiciness'. There's a bit of SUS (sulphur under screwcap) too./ The panorama is on view on the palate.. The acidity is bright, the spatlese level of sweetness right. Will achieve harmony and fulfillment after a couple of more years in the cellar. By the second session, much of the sulphur had aired off, and the wine was well appreciated. 16.6+.
