(WT030321-01) 17 CREMANT DE BORDEAUX BRUT, CALVET  $17.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPARKLING) 12%; 70% semillon, 30% cabernet franc; 11 months en tirage. An engaging degree of fruit on the nose. No shortage of lees autolysis influence./ Flavorful. More leesy than fruity on the palate. Agreeable; versatile. Good value. 16.5.

03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 13%; name refers to fog; at Condado do Tea; 75 yr old vines on slate instead of the usual granite. Some sulphur under screwcap at first. As it lifts,, albarino tropical fruit, stone fruit, and flowers evident beneath./ Flavors confirm aromas. Plus citrus notes and fresh acidity. 16.3+.

(WT030321-03) 20 BABYLONSTOREN CANDIDE SIMONSBERG-PAARL WHITE  $14.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SOURH AFRICA) 13.5%; chenin blanc, viognier, chardonnay, semillon; all but the chenin lees aged for 4 months in seasoned barrels. Fresh, fruity, well crafted. The first two contribute aromatics, the others, filling. Viognier is properly measured so its floral qualities do not overwhelm chenin's quince, lime, and melon. Lees play a leavening role./ Crisp, fresh, even crunchy. One of the liveliest Cape whites I've tasted. Superb balance. Kudos. 16.7.

(WT030321-04) 17 POUILLY FUISSE LES ROBEES, DOMAINE FABRICE LAROCHETTE  $25.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13.5%; 40 year old vines in the Chaintre sector, south-facing and always the first to be harvested; lees aged. Lees and additional bottle age give this a certain graininess that creates something of a barrel-aged impression. Full body of the appellation. Classy and elegant./ 2017 soft and accommodating. Needs no further aging, really. 16.5.

(WT030321-05) 19 DOLCETTO D'ALBA, AZ. AGR. PAOLO SCAVINO  $14.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; 50+ year old vines. Stunning red violet color./ And blue fruit aroma. Scavino fruitiness, suavity, varietal definition./ Burst of black fruit flavors. Black cherry, plus dashes of anise and orange zest. Well textured. Surprising measure of tannin, albeit fine grained. Gives it an unexpected chewiness that will play well at the table, so there's not obligation to age this. 16.7+.

(WT030321-06) 19 MOULIN A VENT VIEILLES VIGNES, DOMAINE DIOCHON  $26.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; unfined, unfiltered; 50-85 yr old vines adjacent to the windmill itself; aged 6 months in seasoned foudres.. Oh, my goodness! Let the games begin! A monster MaV sporting a complex range of intense aromatics. Cherry, plum, violets, wet stones, rare earths./ Maybe a tad less body than the Parker 94/100 2018. Still, it's plenty full enough. Chewy tannins, fine acidity, plenty of material, dry extract. This one deserves cellaring. 17.4+.

(WT030321-07) 17 WILLAMETTE VALLEY VINEYARDS FOUNDERS' RESERVE WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR  $23.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 13.5%; Dijon, Pommard, & Wadenswil clones; 9 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. This shows the extra year of bottle maturation versus the 2018 tasted last month. It's softer; and there's the beginning of bottle bouquet coming on. Deep and intricate melange of fruit, oak, and barrel age./ Yes, rounder and softer on the palate too. Remarkably engaging flavor and texture range at this stage. Enough acid to preserve balance. I'd put it right to use. 17.0.

(WT030321-08) 11 COPERTINO RISERVA, CANTINA SOCIALE DI COPERTINO  $12.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13%; in Salento; 95% negroamaro, 5% malvasia nera; 2011 was just released. Must have been bottled recently. There's no red stain on the cork at all. The ruby color suggests a much younger wine. Credit negroamaro./ Ah, but the bouquet is readily evident. Along with a much greater freshness than the 2010 showed last year. Cooler vintage so less roasted fruit./ Intricate in bouquet and taste. Broad, round, and so inviting for current drinking. Long, suave aftertaste. I suspect it was aged in large, neutral vats of some sort. Deal! 17.0.

(WT030321-10) 18 SAINTAYME, GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION  $28.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; owned by ace consulting oenologist Denis Durantou; 98% merlot 2% cab franc; at St Etienne de Lisse; aged 14 months in barrels, 30% new. Near black color concentration./ Full 2018 fruit abundance tempered and complexed by barrel effects, including new barrels. Thoroughly modern claret in the best sense, as you'd expect from this maker./ Prominent fruit richness conquers the oak, which adds an underlying layer of taste and tannin. Very, very long finish. 17.4+.

(WT030321-11) 18 SAUMUR CHAMPIGNY TERROIR DE CRAIE, DOMAINE DE LA PERRUCH E  $18.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 15%; cabernet franc; terroir of perruche stones on chalky tuffeau at Montsoreau. Full color./ Oh, that's a bright--even brilliant--S-C cab franc red raspberry nose. And peppery seeds. No herbs in ripe 2018. The special elegant take of an S-C cab franc. Haven't had one in a long time, but I can't forget it./ Sweet and juicy ripe fruit shows the combo of vintage and northern latitude. Lingering ripe acidity and very fine tannin. Textbook S-C. I suspect the alcohol statement was to avoid the tariff last year. Doesn't smell and taste like a 15% wine. 16.9+.

(WT030321-12) 17 COTES DU RHONE CUVEE MACLURA, CHATEAU PEGAU  $18.99
03/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; 60% grenache, 25% syrah, 10% mourvedre, 5% cinsault; 50 year old vineyard at Sorgues bordering Chateauneuf du Pape. Now back to a sensible degree of ripeness after the freakish 2016. Big, rich, and powerful. Syrah and mourvedre provide a lot of black fruit aromas. This runs old vines deep and complicated./ Yes, grenache levels of alcohol and glycerol balanced by the firm black fruits of the other major players. Tannins melted, so useful now. Solid vintage of this. 16.9+.
