A well assembled set of area grape varieties, perfectly new at age two. 16.6.

(WT021721-05) 18 CHATEAU GRAND TRAVERSE LIMITED OLD MISSION PENINSULA GAMAY NOIR  $14.99
02/17/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (.U.S. MICHIGAN) 12.7%; est. 1974; barrel aged 4 months. Valid gamay; always is. Lacks some of the pizzazz of a top Beaujolais though./ Yeah, the cherry-berry flavors; suggestion of barrel time. Nice and spicy finish. All around good guy suggested to service with lightly smoked meats and at a summer cookout. 16.2.

- (ITALY) 14%; est 1524; at Greve; 90% sangiovese, 10% canaiolo; aged 20 months in cooperage, Wine Enthusiast 91/100. A fine example of barrel aged Classico. Not woody, just rounded out and fulfilled in aromatic development./ Sweet cherry flavor mellowed and complexed by barrel time. 2017's relative ease at age three, enhanced by its cooperage sojourn. Delightfully fulfilled and tannin-less for current enjoyment. Well liked by the group. 17.0.

(WT021721-07) 16 RIOJA CRIANZA, BODEGAS LAN  $16.99
02/17/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 13.5%; est. 1972; 96% tempranillo 4% mazuelo; from Alta & Alavesa; 12 months in barrels with French oak staves & American oak heads. Dark, deep, significant, impressive fruit intensity and non-blatant barrel influences. A rightful crianza. For its type, usually a poor relation to the reserva and gran reserva in the Lan pantheon, but 2016 is up to snuff./ Flavor-wise too. I enjoy the dual oak contributions and the glycerined richness against the fine tannins. Champion Lan crianza vintage here. Enjoyed by the group. 17.0.

(WT021721-09) 18 STOLLER ESTATE DUNDEE HILLS PINOT NOIR  $23.99
02/17/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 14.1%; est. 1993; from all the estate's clones; mainly whole bunch fermented; aged a year in seasoned French oak barrels. That pretty, pretty Stoller take on Oregon pinot that rides the line between crispness and richness. Spot on harmony./ Rich, round, and full in the mouth. No mistaking this for the richer, riper California pinot style though. It has structure, coolness, and vibrant acidity. Perennial winner, at a reasonable price. 17.0.

(WT021721-10) 18 CHATEAU FRANCS MAGNUS, BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR  $11.99
02/17/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; in the Fronsac area; 90% merlot, 10% cab franc; Suckling 92/100. Really pumps out the 2018 fruit extravagance. This is 2018 merlot to the max, in a humble Bordeaux Superieur at a humble price. In tune with the Chateau style and quality lately./ Soft, lush, round, and ready to serve. Good acid, framing, and light tannin keep it from getting sloppy. If claret is ever to appeal to the younger generations, it will be via this route. 16.5.

Whoa, a big step up in pedigree of origin and barrel impact. Hard to believe this is a mere Montagne second wine. Soaring, complex, thorough./ Full bodied, well balanced, rich in flavor and fine grained tannins. This too is 'modern', in the best sense. Masterful winegrowing here displays Bouard family genius. 17.2+.
