(WT020321-01) 19 LUGANA, CA' MAIOL  $16.99
02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13%; trebbiano di lugana; limestone soil, clay subsoil. The fruit is intense. Seems a pretty bulky Lugana. The clay talks./ On the palate, even more fruit clarity and volume. The fruit and terroir material is there. The more this breathes, the more impressive it becomes. 16.6+.

02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes

(WT020321-03) 18 LIOCO SONOMA CHARDONNAY  $21.99
02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 13.5%; mainly from Russian River Valley; fermented on lees for 8 months without stirring; complete, natural malolactic. Clear, fresh fruit for the most part. More about lees than oak, for sure./ Round with malo, and cut through with good acidity. It's not one of those 'buttery' malo takes. Versatile at the table. 16.4.

(WT020321-04) 19 DOLCETTO D'ALBA, CANTINA DEL PINO  $16.99
02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 12.5%; 35-70 year old vines; unfiltered. Varietal accuracy, 19 freshness, levity of both. Black cherry, eau de vie. Super lovely fruit/ Old vines intensity. Quite a bit of tannic grip upon opening. Not bigger than its boots, thank goodness. The curtains of tannin seemed to part after aeration, and the group agreed this would be lovely to drink now. 16.5.

(WT020321-05) 18 WILLAMETTE VALLEY VINEYARDS FOUNDERS' RESERVE WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR  $23.99
02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (U.S. WEST COAST) 14%; Dijon, Pommard, Wadenswil clones; 9 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. A consistent winner of late, it features deep fruit verging on purple--unusual for pinot. And oak augmentation without dominance. Complex, sophisticated./ Well married fruit and oak presentation. Both oak and fruit tannins. Good acid. Lays right; nothing askew. Though it will be suaver after another year or two in the cellar. Well priced. 17.0+.

(WT020321-06) 18 CHATEAU BEAUMONT, CRU BOURGEOIS SUPERIEUR, HAUT MEDOC  $21.99
02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; at Cussac; 53% cab sauv, 42% merlot, 5% petit verdot in Gunz gravel, 12-14 months in barrels, 1/3 new. Proof that cru bourgeois tiers have returned. New oak is a recent feature at Beaumont. It's a plus in this abundantly fruity vintage. Gives framing as well as aromatic range./ Wonderful 18 fruit coupled with barrel flavor and structure contributions. Both rich and elegant. Young claret well poised for cellaring. Best Beaumont vintage in memory. The group was wildly enthusiastic. 16.8+.

(WT020321-07) 18 CHATEAU TOUR LEOGNAN, PESSAC-LEOGNAN  $24.99
02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; Ch Carbonnieux's second wine; half each cab sauv, merlot; vines under 12 years old; aged a year in barrels. Graves earthiness and lightly green fruited aspect of young vines produce. But, then, the Grand Vin has often shown me these characteristics too./ Yeah, it's just not as ripe as it should be in 2018. Green tannins.. 15.8+.

(WT020321-08) 18 CROZES HERMITAGE SILENE, J. L. CHAVE SELECTION  $28.99
02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; The vineyards for Silene are hillside vineyards located in Larnage and Gervans. 50% of the Crozes comes from a parcel of young vines planted in 2003 and owned by Domaine Jean Louis Chave. The parcel is on the rear east-facing flank of the Hermitage hill. It is rare for Crozes to come from hillside granitic soil as most Crozes is situated on the alluvial valley floor. The grapes are vinified at the Domaine using indigenous yeasts and aged for 18 months in 600 liter oak casks. Wine Spectator 92/100, and, it fills the bill. Spectacular range and intensity of northern Rhone syrah attributes./ 2018 suave. Complex flavor array. Fine acid and tannin. Super flavorful, long, fine. Keeper. The group was impressed. 17.4+.

(WT020321-09) 17 AGLIANICO DEL VULTURE GRIFALCO, AZ. AGR. GRIFALCO DELLA LUCANIA  $25.99
02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (ITALY) 13.5%; vines 25-40 yrs old in volcanic soil; aged 6-12 months in once used French barriques. The flagship wine; not the Gricos. Good as that is, this one has more concentration and depth. Oh, and that cherry, tar, and roses spread that marks this the Barolo of the South./ Barrel aging adds to the complexity. Young and tannic still, especially for 2017. One ambitious, cellarworthy aglianico. 16.8+.

(WT020321-10) 17 PRIORAT MAS DEL BILLO ONA, CELLER CECILIO  $18.99
02/03/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (SPAIN) 14%; 40% garnatxa, 40% syrah, 20% carinyena in llicorella schist at Grattalops; unoaked. The fascinations of Priorat: so many terroirs and noble grape variety combos. I appreciate the unwooded approach here. It puts grapes and terroir to the fore. A beautiful spread and concentration of all three varieties' strengths. In a word: complex./ The sweet fruit is on full display in the revealing 2017 vintage. Good acid, fine grained tannin. Managed force. No reason not to put this right to use with hearty winter fare. 17.0+.

- (APERITIF) 18%; from the cabernets & merlot; aged 5 years in oak cooperage. What it is: a red fruited pineau. A good source as indicated by well aged cognac component and a nice, custardy verjus sweetness. Beaulon is a pineau destination. Very popular with the group. 17.2.
