(WT012021-01) 13 CONDRIEU, DOMAINE DE BONSERINE  $44.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14%; formerly Domaine Gerin; bought by Guigal in 2006; Europvin selection. Golden honeysuckle and sweet-meal bouquet. An attractive stage./ Apricot flavor, glycerol feel. I could use a little more acidity. A surprise in cool 2013. Maybe it's just glycerol coated. 16.5.

(WT012021-02) 18 SANCERRE LES CREOTS, FAMILLE THOMAS  $24.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE LOIRE) 14.5%; est. 1670. Quality cork./ Moving from lemon-lime to orange with bouquet development./ Good body of 2018, and roundness. Plenty lively acidity along the way. A pleasing mouthful, if a little further along the development curve than I prefer. 16.4.

(WT012021-03) 15 SANTENAY BLANC, CHAMPS PERRIER, JEAN CHARTRON  $31.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; est. 1873. Full bodied. Gathering a nutty-mealy-grainy bouquet./ Full in the mouth too. I expected relatively low acidity in this warm vintage, but it's actually up to the task of balancing the wine's richness here, so the finish does not cloy. Attractive oak throughout, especially on the aftertaste. 16.8.

(WT012021-06) 16 MORGON GRAND CRU, DOMAINE DES GAUDETS  $16.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; on the Cote du Py; barrel aged a year. A lusty Cote du Py ripe cherry nose. There's characteristic 2016 form, restraint, and tailoring too./ Four years has rounded this out nicely. Plenty of cherry flavor. Powdery dusting of tannin only adds to the textural adventure. 16.6+.

(WT012021-07) 15 MORGON GRAND CRU, DOMAINE DES GAUDETS  $16.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 13%; on the Cote du Py; barrel aged a year. Well, riper still, as would be expected of 2015. Sprawling Cote du Py cherry character, the softer aspect of 2015 and a year more in bottle./ Good tarry concentrate too. Seems more powerful. This pair pretty much defines Beaujolais 16/15 vintage contrasts. 16.8.

(WT012021-08) 14 SAINT ROMAIN, DOMAINE ALAIN GRAS  $34.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) 12.5%; 35 year old vines; aged a year in barrels, 15% new. Oh, that lusty, in-your-face Gras style, even in the restrained 2014 vintage. And backwater Saint Romain no less! But that what he does! This is approaching the body and aroma ambitions of the 2015./ Broad and complex thanks to old vines and barrel aging. The tough 2014 tannins are definitely mellowing out now. More bouquet to come, yet this has dinner time applications this winter too. Boeuf bourguignon, say? Very popular with the group. 17.3+.

(WT012021-09) 18 CHATEAU HYOT, CASTILLON COTES DE BORDEAUX  $14.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 14.5%; 70% merlot, 20% cab franc, 10% cab sauv; aged 18 months in once used barrels. Yow, that bright, heart on sleeve 2018 claret appeal, enhanced by its Right Bank merlot dominance and by Castillon wine's Saint Emilion knockoff style and quality. It is, after all, an extension of eastern Saint Emilion's 'cote'./ Oh, so sweet and juicy fruited, with upscale body and grip. Barrel time extends the complexity. Best Hyot I've tasted. Deal! The group agreed. 16.8.

(WT012021-10) 17 CROZES HERMITAGE, DOMAINE DES LISES  $34.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 13%; 40+ year old vines at Les Picheres. Great color depth./ Great syrah intensity for the vintage. Positive reduction. A compact core of all the right northern Rhone syrah qualities. I'll be curious to see how it blossoms over the coming hours./ A little let up in intensity on the palate, especially from the body aspect. That's the 2017 style. The flavors are pure and accurate. Waits to blossom forth. An it surely did, becoming another group favorite. 17.0+

(WT012021-11) 13 GIGONDAS TERRASSES DES DENTELLES, DOMAINE DE FONT SANE  $31.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 15%; 73% grenache, 24% syrah, 3% mourvedre; yield: 1 ton/acre; aged a year in seasoned barrels. Whoa, another country heard from! Here's grenache in all its force and fortitude, Gigondas-style. Power, spread, openness, evolution, sweetness, harmony. If this vintage had any weather shortcomings, they're surely not evident here. Total Gigondas nose./ Equally enveloping and engaging palate from both flavor and texture standpoints. Pure harmony at this stage. This cuvee deserves such aging; best I've tasted. 17.7.

(WT012021-12) 12 GIGONDAS ORIGINE, DOMAINE SAINT GAYAN  $31.99
01/20/21 Wednesday Group Tasting Notes
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) 14.5%; 80% grenache, 15% syrah, 5% mourvedre; vines 60-100+ years old; Europvin selection. Mammoth, black, daunting. As always. Spells the estate and the vintage. Thank goodness it has had eight years to temper its tannins./ Sweet and nicely rounded for its bottle age. I like that black, compact, frank styling. Tannins suggest it will go on in the cellar. However, put them to use with the right cuisine this winter. This blossomed over the next couple of hours to become very popular with the group, which was split between preference for 11. or for 12. 17.5+.
