- (SPAIN) 15%; 51% garnacha, 31% carignan, 12% syrah, 6% cab sauv; aged 7 months in French oak barrels. Oh, boy, Priorat to the max. And this is just the basic cuvee of Christopher Canaan's estate. Total fruit, spice, scorch, and power./ Sweet, full, broad, deep. Smooth and well balanced. The nose is more adventuresome than the palate at this stage. 17.7/17.3+.

- (U.S. WEST COAST) 14%; vyds at 2400'; by Napa Valley's Blackbird; 100% cab sauv; aged 9 months in seasoned French oak barrels. The power, warmth, and density of a Red Hills cabernet. Cool 2017 helps to keep it in line. Still, it's a wine of place./ Sweet Red Hills cabernet fruit. Sweet for 2017. Generous. Less range and depth than I recall in the 2016. 16.8+.

- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 12.5%; second wine of Grand Cru Ch Carbonnieux; 70% sauvignon, 30% semillon. Sauvignon high acid cut right up front. Then semillon comes in play here, bringing plumpness, lanolin, and marl into the picture. Right./ Yes, the roundness of semillon, the cut of sauvignon. Well balanced, well poised. Fills with aeration and mouth warmth. And as it distances itself from the demonstrative Winkl. 16.9+.

- (U.S. WEST COAST) 13%; from 30+ yr old vineyards in northern Willamette Valley. Wow, intense, brisk, rich, full. Huge Oregon pinot cherry definition, penetration. With oak interwoven. Great acid. Full ripeness./ Crisp Oregon pinot edge too. This is all over the place yet somehow seems well managed too. Sweet fruit finish. 17.4. One participant said this was the best New World pinot noir he'd ever tasted. It's all moot though. I re-ordered, and received the 2017.

- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) 13%; 85% merlot, 10% cab sauv, 5% cab franc; aged 12 months in barrels. Starts out 2014 firm but certainly not obstinate. Aeration coaxes forth Saint Emilion flesh, merlot cherry, give, and volume./ Great sweet-acid balance. Full flavored. Grand Cru breeding. Barrel aging breadth without woodiness. This is really good. 17.0+.
