SPF-107. ST JULIAN SOLERA CREAM On his ten-day visit to Michigan’s vineyards in 2002, Master of Wine Tom Stevenson paid compliments to many of the wines. In his followup article in April’s Decanter Magazine, he awards the highest rating, 5 Stars, to four wines, including this one. He comments: ‘It has the colour of a genuine old fino, the nose and palate of an extremely fine, genuinely old amontillado, albeit a tad sweeter, and amazing length and elegance, but it is its crystal-clear brilliance that entrances.’

SPF-109. BARBADILLO MANZANILLA Wine Enthusiast: ‘Regardless of style, the names Lustau and Barbadillo should be engraved in your consciousness as the most reliable producers.’ On the Manzanilla: ‘Light-bodied with a sense of roundness in the mouth. Refreshing acidity. Sea salt and nut flavors enhanced by a hint of lemon. Crisp and dry, elegant and fresh. Best Buy. 90/100.’
How Many bottles/singles: 9.99 each
SPF-110. HIDALGO LA GITANA MANZANILLA half liter (HL) Wine News 98: ‘Clean, pure, fresh appley nose. Clean, crisp, delicate and charming with nutty almond flavors, lovely mouth-feel and long, salty, green olive finish. Ethereal; a whisper of the sea.’ From a complex 17-stage criadera, manzanilla doesn’t get any better than this. Now marketed in smart half-liter bottles. Manzanilla is delicate; its qualities are fleeting. After opening, refrigerate it, and consume within a month or you will lose many of its ethereal beauties.
How Many bottles/singles: 13.99 each
SPF-111. LUSTAU PAPIRUSA MANZANILLA Parker 92: ‘A spicy, nutty nose, elegant, dry flavors, delicious purity, and a smoky intensity. It would be fabulous with sushi.’
How Many bottles/singles: 16.99 each
SPF-112. OSBORNE MANZANILLA Very dry, crisp, and sea-breeze salty. Perennial best value manzanilla.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each
SPF-113. PEDRO ROMERO MANZANILLA AURORA half liter (HL) Wine & Spirits 90 - BEST BUY: ‘This wine shows the subtleties of Manzanilla in delicate notes of limestone and white pepper framed by juicy acidity. While light in weight, this ends with seductive creaminess. A great buy to serve with smoked salmon.’
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each
SPF-114. BARBADILLO FINO Wine Enthusiast 90 - Best Buy: ‘Light-bodied. Zippy acidity. Crisp, dry and flavorful with full, nutty, sea salt and yeasty nuances. Elegant and integrated.’
How Many bottles/singles: 8.99 each
SPF-115. LUSTAU JARANA LIGHT FINO Parker 90: ‘The brilliant quality of Emilio Lustau’s sherries is indisputable. Sherry remains the world’s most underappreciated and undervalued beverage. Certainly the Fino, Dry Amontillado, and Palo Cortado would be amazing with Japanese sushi or rich soups. The crisp, pungent, potent Jarana is redolent of the smells and flavors of roasted nuts.’
How Many bottles/singles: 16.99 each
SPF-116. LUSTAU PUERTO FINO Wine & Spirits 94 - Exceptional Value: ‘Fino can be simple and fresh, saline and clean, but also massive and complex, a monument of a place like this Puerto Fino, the flagship of Lustau. The complexity here starts right from the scent, a cloud of salt, green apples and chalk. At first sip, its silky texture and salty almond flavor immediately entice; then, with air, a strong chalkiness emerges. The wine feels as if it is made of chalk and marine breezes. It’s a tremendous wine; get some fried sardines and touch heaven.’
How Many bottles/singles: 16.99 each
SPF-117. PEDRO DOMECQ LA INA FINO Wine & Spirits 92: ‘Smelling vividly of flor, this is like an archetype of fino, as one taster said; it’s traditional, with notes of fresh-cut grass, minerals and dried pear. The long, lingering finish has an appealing bitterness. Sip it alone, well chilled, and think of the warm nights of Andalucia.’
How Many bottles/singles: 16.99 each
SPF-118. PEMARTIN FINO
How Many bottles/singles: 10.99 each
SPF-119. PEDRO ROMERO FINO Ideal fino. Fuller than a manzanilla. Slivered almond, grilled almond. White and brown nuts. Flor. Very fresh as well as full./ Aromas and body confirmed. Hits all the high spots: fine spirit, race, acid, length. Nice light grip. 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each
SPF-120. OSBORNE FINO Fuller than the manzanilla, though still totally dry. A best-buy in fino.
How Many bottles/singles: 13.99 each
SPF-121. ROMATE FINO Pungent and hefty. Marl, chalk, smoke, almond paste, white raisin, honey. This is old time, classic, wanting food. Fino full versus manzanilla delicate./ Rich flor, dry nuts. A touch salty. Yes it’s a large, old time fino. And an older fino too–moving toward pasada. Takes some understanding of the traditional sort, but works in consideration. 90/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 11.99 each
SPF-122. BARBADILLO MEDIUM DRY AMONTILLADO Wine Enthusiast 90 - Exceptional: ‘Inviting, nutty nose leads the palate to a sweet impression; however, the finish is dry and firm. Interesting flavor combination of orange and pecan resolves with good acidity and a clean finish.’
How Many bottles/singles: 9.99 each
SPF-123. DIOS BACO AMONTILLADO Wine Enthusiast 93 - EDITORS’ CHOICE: ‘This is sweet Amontillado in fine form. The nose is centered around a core of molasses and brown sugar, while the palate bubbles with maple and toffee. Yes, it’s a sweet-styled Amontillado, but the sugar fades on the palate, leaving only the complex residue of caramel, espresso and burnt cinnamon. A lovely wine for any fan of serious Sherry.’
How Many bottles/singles: 26.99 each
SPF-124. HIDALGO NAPOLEON AMONTILLADO Wine & Spirits 92: ‘This austere wine is all about salty minerality, its firm texture enhanced by crisp acidity. With air, the mineral side still feels dominant, while green-olive flavors and a caramel note emerge behind the stoniness of the structure. For blue-veined cheeses, such as Stilton.’
How Many bottles/singles: 26.99 each
SPF-125. LUSTAU LOS ARCOS DRY AMONTILLADO Dry and distinguished. Not a bit of youthful stickiness. This is all about sophistication of age: wood, nut, toffee, time in cask bouquet./ Yes, full dry, good acidity, good spirit. Perfect weight. Wood, nut. All in pleasing harmony. Fine craftsmanship. 93/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 18.99 each
SPF-126. OSBORNE AMONTILLADO Interesting. Shows some moscatel as a sweetener grape. Med muscat airs. Not much wood, age./ Taste confirms. Shades of Setubal. Mellow sweetness, modest strength. Friendly, rather than serious. 89/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each
SPF-127. PEMARTIN AMONTILLADO Sweet and strong and sticky nose. Toffee and dried apricot. Not showing the wisdom of an amontillado of great age./ But the palate is drier than the nose suggests, and there’s power, authority, and sophistication. Not nearly so youthful and sticky as the nose. Nut and oak and time in oak. The palate carries it. 90/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 10.99 each
SPF-128. PEREZ AMONTILLADO
How Many bottles/singles: 9.49 each
SPF-129. PEDRO DOMECQ AMONTILLADO
How Many bottles/singles: 16.99 each
SPF-130. PEDRO ROMERO AMONTILLADO Wine Spectator 91; Wine Enthusiast 90 - BEST BUY: ‘What a treat it is to come across an inexpensive Sherry that’s this well made and delivers this much purity. Toffee, peach and almond flavors are the slightest bit buttery, and the feel is lively but comfortable.’
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each
SPF-131. ROMATE AMONTILLADO Some of the sweet youthful fruit that is typical in a medium dry rendition plus the older, solera earned tones of oak, chamomile, and hickory nut. Some chalk too, pointing to quality terroir./ Sweetish but not pasty like the ordinary lot. Has tones of solera maturity too. Good example of the medium dry type. Long finish gives a mark of classicism. 91/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each
SPF-132. LUSTAU PENINSULA PALO CORTADO Parker 92: ‘One of my favorites. With great balance, intensity, and acidity as well as a scorched earth/roasted nut character, it is a stunning, flavorful yet crisp sherry.’
How Many bottles/singles: 22.99 each
SPF-133. BARBADILLO DRY OLOROSO Oh, boy, what a sophisticated nuttiness! I mean, it’s mixed nuts. Some filbert, some brazil, some walnut. Wow! Lots of subtle intricacies. Some sweet woodiness too, a subtle caramel layer./ Truly dry. Sleek, with just the right weight. The flavor goes through and through and lasts a long time. Steal of a price. If only American consumers were more receptive to the obvious mealtime applications of sherries like this. What bargains they’re missing! 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 9.99 each
SPF-134. DIOS BACO OLOROSO Wine Enthusiast 93 - EDITORS’ CHOICE: ‘Very stylish. The nose offers a full blast of maple, citrus rind and honey, while the delicious palate overflows with dried apricot, fig, dates, pepper and chocolate. The mouthfeel is lithe, almost lean and the finish, which is just spicy enough to offset the sweetness, goes on forever
How Many bottles/singles: 25.99 each
SPF-135. HARTLEY & GIBSON MEDIUM DRY OLOROSO (Limited Stock) Date, toffee, ripe apple and pear bouquet./ Date, flower, apple, spice, toast flavors. Good strength and relative dryness. Quite sophisticated. 91/100.

SPF-137. LUSTAU DON NUNO DRY OLOROSO Great Value Sherry of the Year - International Wine Challenge 2003: ‘This runs the whole gamut from candied lemon peel through Rancio character to nuts and fruitcake. It is wonderfully rich but with a clean, fresh dryness that darts energetically back and forth across the palate.’
How Many bottles/singles: 23.99 each
SPF-138. WILLIAMS & HUMBERT DRY SACK OLOROSO
How Many bottles/singles: 19.99 each
SPF-139. LUSTAU SOLERA OLD EAST INDIA bottled 01 Parker 94: ‘Readers looking for something more weighty, sweeter, and more provocative should check out the East India Solera. A blend of soleras averaging 15 to 50 years of age, it boasts a huge nose of melted toffee, caramel, figs, and prunes. This over-the-top yet surprisingly vibrant effort is best drunk as dessert at the end of a meal.’
How Many bottles/singles: 25.99 each
SPF-140. BARBADILLO CREAM Wine Enthusiast - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: ‘Caramel and almond aromas follow through on the palate, creamy and soft. Light nutty flavors linger, sweet, yet balanced.’
How Many bottles/singles: 9.99 each

How Many bottles/singles: 25.99 each
SPF-144. LUSTAU CAPATAZ ANDRES DELUXE CREAM Wine Enthusiast 91: ‘Attractive caramel, apricot and peach aromas drive straight to a pure, creamy palate of cinnamon apple, mocha, coffee and chocolate. It’s quite smooth and balanced, and very long on the finish. Avoids all the pitfalls of sweet Sherry by maintaining its balance and mouthfeel.’
How Many bottles/singles: 18.99 each
SPF-145. LUSTAU SOLERA SUPERIOR RARE CREAM
How Many bottles/singles: 26.99 each
SPF-146. PEDRO ROMERO CREAM Dry and sophisticated on the nose. Nothing sticky. No signs of PX or moscat dominance./ Impressive. Lots of walnut flavor. Not too much sugar despite the title. Price-worthy discovery, for sure. 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each
SPF-147. PEREZ CREAM Walnut, toffee, wood. Hey! This is much more sophisticated than it used to be. Used to be really sticky and PX dominated./ Yes, it’s not as sweet and sticky, the spirit gives more lift and coolness, and there’s even a degree of age refinement. Wow! Goes to show you need to go back to some of these non vintage standards once in a while to get an up to date take. 90/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 9.99 each

From Cockburn’s quinta on the north bank of the Douro superior, just across from Taylor’s Vargellas, much of it touriga nacional (50 percent) and barroca (30) recently planted on steep terraces, the balance from the old vine block on the property. It’s heady and generous in 2000, the ripeness of the upper Douro shown in chocolate and raisin flavors in the tannin, checked and balanced by the blueness of the fruit. MALAGA
SPF-280. 01 T RODRIGUEZ MR MOSCATEL MALAGA half liter (HL) Telmo Rodriguez, son of the owners of Rioja’s esteemed Remelluri Estate, has studied in Bordeaux and worked in the Rhone Valley, yet he returned to Spain not to internationalize its wines but to defend the traditional grape varieties, regions, and styles. He has grapes growing and cuvees aging from Alicante to Navarra, Rueda to Malaga. There are only six producers left to keep the tradition of Malaga alive. Rodriguez works with one of these to produce a wine from 100% moscatel that offers distinctive character. It’s a complex amalgam of honeycomb, spice, and candied fruits, all in balance and finishing neat and clean, not sticky.

SPF-281. 08 ORDONEZ BOTANI MOSCATEL SECO Sweet ripe fruits. Orange, plus some nutty suggestions. The spirit is well managed, not hot or obvious. An attractive face of muscat, and more toward the canelli than the alexandria sort. More floral than tawny orange like./ Bright and fruity. Lots of apple, lemon zest, perfume, botanicals. Firm, piquant, distinctive. Dry, even austere. Good acidity. Well made. 91/100.

SPF-282. 04 ORDONEZ SELECCION ESPECIAL #1 half bottle (H) Tanzer 92: ‘120 grains per liter of residual sugar. Vibrant melon and peach aromas are brightened by zesty minerality and citrus zest. SPF-283. 00 T RODRIGUEZ MOLINO REAL MOUNTAIN MALAGA half liter (HL) A throwback to 19th-century Malaga, the wine described in old Christie’s catalogues as ‘Mountain’. Rodriguez has discovered ancient moscatel bushes on steep slopes in the mountainous hinterland of Malaga. Their produce ferments very slowly due to the high sugar content. The fermentation stops naturally at 12% strength with lots of sugar remaining. The wine is aged in small French oak barrels. A note of orange peel in the bouquet reminds me of Portugal’s Setubal moscats, suggesting that the old vines are of the muscat alexandria variety.
