RFS-2739. 16 GETARIAKO TXAKOLINA ROSE RUBENTIS, AMEZTOI
2014: Underground Wineletter - OUTSTANDING: ‘Just five minutes down the coast from San Sebastian, Ameztoi’s vineyards overlook the Atlantic Ocean. The Ameztoi family has been making wine here for seven generations, utilizing the indigenous Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Beltza grapes. Every year this rosé gets my award for having the most difficult to pronounce name. That doesn’t change. But the wine does and I find this 2014 to be the best of all the recent vintages that I have tasted or maybe I am just getting used to it! At any rate, it is unusual and very attractive. The wine has a pale pink color and a lovely perfume showing raspberry and citrus. With 11% alcohol it is very finesseful and very bright and crisp with a slight spritz that accents the crispness. The fruit is very pure and hints of raspberry and tart cherry are accented by a touch of citrus. This rosé has achieved somewhat of a cult status and if you like a very dry, crisp, and refreshing rosé you may want to join the group. $20.’

RFS-2747. ST. JULIAN SOLERA MICHIGAN CREAM SHERRY
On his ten-day visit to Michigan’s vineyards in 2002, Master of Wine Tom Stevenson paid compliments to many of the wines. In his followup article in April’s Decanter Magazine, he awards the highest rating, 5 Stars, to four wines, including this one. He comments: ‘It has the colour of a genuine old fino, the nose and palate of an extremely fine, genuinely old amontillado, albeit a tad sweeter, and amazing length and elegance, but it is its crystal-clear brilliance that entrances.’

Wine News 98: ‘Clean, pure, fresh appley nose. Clean, crisp, delicate and charming with nutty almond flavors, lovely mouth-feel and long, salty, green olive finish. Ethereal; a whisper of the sea.’ From a complex 17-stage criadera, manzanilla doesn’t get any better than this. Now marketed in smart half-liter bottles. RFS-2756. GONZALEZ BYASS TIO PEPE FINO EN RAMA 2016
2013: Parker 92: ‘The NV Tio Pepe Fino en Rama 2013 is a barrel selection of the Tio Pepe solera bottled in the spring when the flor is more active and therefore the pungent character of the wine stronger, unfiltered, unfined and released in 2013. They use a different label every year, and they also state the bottling year, so different vintages are easy to spot; this is their fourth annual release. The nose shows a fruity character, very complex, with chalk, spice, brine and smoke. The palate shows a medium-bodied wine, full, round, complex, sharp but with volume, and a pungent, dry finish. I think this is a good way to make different yearly releases of wines that people can follow-up. Even though they recommend drinking it young and fresh, depending on how you like the wines, the 2013 release has the stuffing to last. Drink 2013-2015.’

Parker 90: ‘The brilliant quality of Emilio Lustau’s sherries is indisputable. Sherry remains the world’s most underappreciated and undervalued beverage. Certainly the Fino, Dry Amontillado, and Palo Cortado would be amazing with Japanese sushi or rich soups. The crisp, pungent, potent Jarana is redolent of the smells and flavors of roasted nuts.’
How Many bottles/singles: 18.99 each

RFS-2759. PEDRO DOMECQ LA INA VERY DRY FINO SHERRY
Totally dry. Green olive, sea salt./ Mellow, nutty, woody like a Lustau fino. Very dry. 91/100.

RFS-2760. DELGADO ZULETA FINO SHERRY
Est. 1744 at Sanlucar. A good full and fresh fino. Classic, classy, big. Forget the finesse./ Big body and flavor. Fresh, new. Yes. 91/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

RFS-2761. DELGADO ZULETA DRY AMONTILLADO SHERRY
Est. 1744. Good, nutty, dry amontillado nose showing its fino parentage. Attractive, real./ A little youthful on the palate but not sticky. Fig paste. Powerful and nutty finish. Yes, good and dry aftertaste. 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

RFS-2762. DELGADO ZULETA MEDIUM DRY AMONTILLADO SHERRY
Sweeter; more fig paste./ Again. Good power. Really, what most people want in amontillado. Good, dry, and nutty aftertaste. Yes. 91/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

RFS-2763. DIOS BACO AMONTILLADO SHERRY
Wine Enthusiast 93 - EDITORS’ CHOICE: ‘This is sweet Amontillado in fine form. The nose is centered around a core of molasses and brown sugar, while the palate bubbles with maple and toffee. Yes, it’s a sweet-styled Amontillado, but the sugar fades on the palate, leaving only the complex residue of caramel, espresso and burnt cinnamon. A lovely wine for any fan of serious Sherry.’
How Many bottles/singles: 24.99 each

RFS-2764. GONZALEZ BYASS VINA AB AMONTILLADO SHERRY
Wine & Spirits 93: ‘This is the youngest Amontillado from Gonzalez Byass, with four years of aging under flor and another four years in oxidative aging. True to form, it is a delightful wine, graceful and elegant in its fine balance between acidity, minerality and a soft, almost delicate body. It takes on surprising force with air, a sense of limestone in scent and flavor that propels the wine toward something rich, like grilled sea bass.’
How Many bottles/singles: 27.99 each

RFS-2765. LUSTAU SOLERA RESERVA LOS ARCOS DRY AMONTILLADO SHERRY
Parker 93: ‘The non-vintage Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Solera Reserva reveals a medium amber hue along with a nutty, honeyed, dry personality with great acid.’ My notes: Dry and distinguished. Not a bit of youthful stickiness. This is all about sophistication of age: wood, nut, toffee, time in cask bouquet./ Yes, full dry, good acidity, good spirit. Perfect weight. Wood, nut. All in pleasing harmony. Fine craftsmanship. 93/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 18.99 each

RFS-2766. PEDRO DOMECQ BOTAINA AMONTILLADO SHERRY
The Domecq range, including La Ina Fino, was bought by Emilio Lustau, re-introduced to the American market, and then withdrawn. Only sparse stocks of Botaina remain, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Parker 92/100. My notes: Sweet and nutty and caramelly. Complex of wood, hickory bowl-ful of nuts, fig paste./ Yes, dry, essential, flavorful, well bodied. Extremely complex. Very high glycerol content. Viscous. Intricacy of a well aged amontillado. Date-nut bread aftertaste that won’t quit. 94/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 12.99 each

RFS-2767. GONZALEZ BYASS LEONOR 12 YEAR OLD PALO CORTADO SHERRY
Wine Enthusiast 91; Wine Spectator 91; Wine & Spirits 91: ‘Elegant and refined, with soft touches of candied cherries, walnuts and almonds, this is a textbook Palo Cortado. Aged 12 years in botas, it falls halfway between Amontillado and Oloroso in flavor, but much closer to the former. It needs only smoked trout.’
How Many bottles/singles: 27.99 each

RFS-2768. LUSTAU PENINSULA PALO CORTADO SHERRY
Parker 92: ‘One of my favorites among the drier, lighter-styled Sherries is the non-vintage Palo Cortado Peninsula. Medium amber-colored, with great balance, intensity, and acidity as well as a scorched earth/roasted nut character, it is a stunning, flavorful yet light, crisp Sherry.’
How Many bottles/singles: 26.99 each

RFS-2769. SANTIAGO PALO CORTADO SHERRY
Lovely, elegant nuttiness. Soft sweetness. Fino almond and sea breeze, oloroso hickory nut./ Dry and delicately nutty. A proper expression of palo cortado: a rare oloroso retaining fino airs. 93/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 18.99 each

RFS-2770. BARBADILLO FULL DRY OLOROSO SHERRY
Oh, boy, what a sophisticated nuttiness! I mean, it’s mixed nuts. Some filbert, some brazil, some walnut. Wow! Lots of subtle intricacies. Some sweet woodiness too, a subtle caramel layer./ Truly dry. Sleek, with just the right weight. The flavor goes through and through and lasts a long time. Steal of a price. If only American consumers were more receptive to the obvious mealtime applications of sherries like this. What bargains they’re missing! 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles: 11.99 each

RFS-2771. DIOS BACO ELITE OLOROSO SHERRY
Wine Enthusiast 93 - EDITORS’ CHOICE: ‘Very stylish. The nose offers a full blast of maple, citrus rind and honey, while the delicious palate overflows with dried apricot, fig, dates, pepper and chocolate. The mouthfeel is lithe, almost lean and the finish, which is just spicy enough to offset the sweetness, goes on forever.’
How Many bottles/singles: 24.99 each

RFS-2772. GONZALEZ BYASS ALFONSO SUPERIOR DRY OLOROSO SHERRY
Wine & Spirits 92: ‘Walnut aromas and light touches of prunes weave into the silken texture of this wine. It moves as a whole in total harmony and smoothness, framed by the flavors of caramel. For fried bait fish.’
How Many bottles/singles: 19.99 each

RFS-2773. GONZALEZ BYASS CRISTINA ABOCADO OLOROSO SHERRY
Wine Enthusiast 91: ‘The core aroma on this semisweet Sherry is maple syrup, but overall the nose is fresh and vital. Although creamy, this is balanced as a whole. Flavors of mixed nuts and toffee are familiar, while the finish hums along with no faults or bumps.’
How Many bottles/singles: 27.99 each

RFS-2774. GONZALEZ BYASS SOLERA 1847 SUPERIOR SWEET OLOROSO SHERRY
Wine Enthusiast 91: ‘Another impressive Oloroso from Gonzalez Byass. This is a sweet, dark, brooding Sherry with prune and other sweet fruit aromas. The palate is rich but has good flow, while dark flavors of dulce de leche and burnt brown sugar are wonderful. Sweet but balanced by mild coffee-like bitterness on the finish.’
How Many bottles/singles: 19.99 each

RFS-2775. GUTIERREZ COLOSIA EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA DRY OLOROSO SHERRY

How Many bottles/singles: 23.99 each

RFS-2776. LUSTAU SOLERA RESERVA DON NUNO DRY OLOROSO SHERRY
Parker 94: ‘If you are looking for a dry sherry made in a slightly more oxidized style, the non-vintage Dry Oloroso Don Nuno Solera Reserva is your choice. Again, a nuttiness (in this case, walnuts) intermixed with a hint of Chinese black tea combine with salty, caramelized flavors make for a delicious glass of sherry.’
How Many bottles/singles: 26.99 each

RFS-2777. EMILIO LUSTAU RIO VIEJO DRY OLOROSO SHERRY

RFS-2778. SANTIAGO OLOROSO SHERRY

How Many bottles/singles: 14.99 each

RFS-2787. LUSTAU SOLERA EAST INDIA SHERRY
Parker 96: ‘The dark amber-hued non-vintage East India Solera is essentially an old Oloroso blended with an old Pedro Ximenez, which gives it a sweet character. It offers more mature notes of maple syrup, brown sugar, spice box, raisin and chocolate beer nuts, and its terrific balancing acidity cuts through the sweetness. This delicious effort is best drunk after the meal.’
How Many bottles/singles: 28.99 each

RFS-2788. 13 ALVEAR PEDRO XIMENEZ DE ANADA MONTILLA half bottle
Parker 93: ‘This 2013 Pedro Ximenez de Anada wine is made from 100% hand-harvested Pedro Ximenez grapes that are dried on mats in the sun, and then fermented in stainless steel, with the fermentation being halted by the addition of liquor. It is then aged six months in 500-liter American oak barrels. A medium amber color is followed by notes of maple syrup, brown sugar, honeysuckle, Chinese black tea and marmalade. This sweet, rich, heady, after-dinner wine should drink well for a decade or more. $25.’

RFS-2849. 04 WARRE’S TRADITIONAL LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT bottled 2008
2003: Parker 93: ‘The 2003 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a traditional Douro field blend, bottled unfiltered in 2007 with a real cork. It comes in at 105 grams per liter of residual sugar. Fresh, lively and quite rich, this is a Porto with a chocolaty finish, plus fine focus and precision. The delectable flavors make it a bit on the decadent side, but its sunny disposition means that it is never cloying or syrupy. Moreover, it is denser than it first appears. It's not jammy, but it is tightly wound with surprisingly fine mid-palate concentration. It takes awhile (it's better on Day 2) to open up and become more expressive. This seems young, with a long life ahead. It is far, far better on Days 2 and 3. This is pretty fine.’

Parker 95: ‘Potentially one of the most compelling wines of the vintage, this inky black/purple-colored 2000 exhibits notes of scorched earth, melted asphalt, blackberry liqueur, and a pungent, penetrating intensity that reverberates in the mouth as well as the head. Full-bodied, massive, and concentrated, with a 45-second finish, this thrilling effort should drink well between 2010-2035.’

The palate is smooth on the entry, quite velvety in the mouth with great depth, perhaps more complexity than I was anticipating, especially towards the structured blackberry and Chinese 5-spice finish that lingers long in the mouth. RFS-2926. AUBRY JOUY LES REIMS PREMIER CRU BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Parker 92; Wine & Spirits 92: ‘This is not your typical non-vintage Brut. The Aubry brothers include ancient indigenous varieties, which make up five percent of the blend; pinot meunier accounts for 45 percent, the balance in equal parts pinot noir and chardonnay. Nearly half of the blend is reserve wine, half of that coming from a solera made up of vintages going back to 1998. If all that seems complicated, the wine is not. Instead, it tastes like an essential Champagne, with scents of chalk, oyster mushroom, pear skin and lemon pulp creating a bold surround-sound of flavor. There’s purity to the expression and a healthy weight to the wine. Pour it with sea bass roasted with chanterelles.’

From the Montagne de Reims, Barnaut’s Grande Reserve consists of 2/3 pinot noir and 1/3 chardonnay. RFS-2930. BARNAUT BOUZY GRAND CRU ROSE AUTHENTIQUE BRUT CHAMPAGNE

RFS-3063. NINO FRANCO RUSTICO PROSECCO DI VALDOBBIADENE SUPERIORE BRUT
Wine & Spirits 92; Parker 90: ‘The NV Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Rustico is a rather exuberant yet steely, powerful Prosecco. White peaches, crushed rocks, smoke and flowers are some of the nuances that flow from this large-scaled, important Prosecco. A rich, textured finish rounds things out nicely. The Rustico is far from an easy-going cocktail wine, and is sure to be better at the table than on its own. Nino Franco is one of the top names in serious Prosecco. At their best, these wines will make readers reconsider the conventional wisdom that Prosecco is a simple, straightforward aperitif wine.’
