GAMAY
NW-2079. 08 J LOHR WILDFLOWER VALDIGUIE MTC Valdiguie was once widely planted in southwest France. Transplanted to California, it acquired the name Napa Gamay, likely for the fresh, fruity qualities of its young wines. Lohr is one of the few remaining producers of a varietal Valdiguie. Luckily, it’s a good one. This 08 has just-out-of-the-box freshness and positively glows with fruit and flower fragrances. One of the best of the series. Nothing else like it. 91/100.

RHONE VARIETALS
NW-2081. 07 BOGLE PETITE SIRAH CA Dark and deep fruited pet. Lodi like fruit sweetness but darker than the Lodi average. This is always a winner–perhaps Bogle’s best varietal. They tap old vines for this, in their neighborhood. Some sweet oak adds to the complex. And the fruit turns increasingly purple like a good pet should./ Yes, there’s oak involved. Toast, vanilla, and caramel. Black cherry and blackberry jam. Good acidity. Plenty of power. No secrets. 89+/100.

NW-2082. 07 CRANE LAKE PETITE SIRAH CA A real surprise. Sweet loganberry and flowers aroma of the best pets./ The flavor’s right too. A little tannic still–no wonder with this varietal. Very impressive. 87+/100.

Everything about this wine hangs together, fits together just right, so no cause for minus points from the judges. Wonderful combo of spicy oak and sweet fruit. Raspberry creme and cracked pepper./ Oh, yes! Fruit, and flowers too. Spices even. Sweet baking spices and sweet fruit. Handsome, lively, friendly, sweet and sassy. The feel, the composition, is so lovely. The ultimate in craftsmanship at this price. Yes, the medal lode makes sense. 91/100.

Although surprisingly approachable and soft by Petite Sirah standards, it packs a powerful punch, exhibiting massive flavors of blue and black fruits, incense, spring flowers, and truffle-like, earthy undertones. Full-bodied and rich with sweet tannin, it can be drunk now, but should easily last for 15-20 years.’

NW-2116. 05 CLOS LA CHANCE SYRAH CC Connoisseurs’ Guide 91 - TWO ROSETTES: ‘Intense themes of plums and blackberries are given a big lift in sweetness by the creamy oak that appears through the length of this very deep and well-crafted opus, and, if never a Syrah of extravagant spice, it is still wonderfully juicy and rich. Full on the palate and still impeccably balanced, it shows uncommon polish for the big wine that it is, and its fine-grained finishing tannins are overlain by layers of lingering fruit. Although so mannerly as to tempt early drinking, it has the depth and reserve to grow for five or more years.’
