INTRODUCTION
TOP 100 2016
It’s been a busy December, and, as a result, our annual Top 100 feature is coming out a bit later than usual. It’s a big list at 140 entries; we think you find it worth the wait. The feature draws from several ‘Top’ lists issued by Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and Wine & Spirits magazines.

INTRODUCTION
TOP 100 2016
We’ve excluded this year list-hierarchy numbers. If it’s important for you to know where in the Spectator and Enthusiast ‘Top’ lists each wine fell, you’ll find them in order on these publications’ websites. Wine & Spirits does not sequence its ‘Best of 2016' selections.

s1225-103. 14 COLUMBIA CREST GRAND ESTATES COLUMBIA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine Spectator 91 - TOP 100 VALUES 2016: ‘Broad and generous, open-textured and inviting, with cherry, currant and red plum flavors that swirl enticingly around the fine-grained tannins and creamy oak on the finish. Drink now through 2018. $12.’
How Many: 10.99 each

s1225-104. 12 ANDREW WILL SORELLA CHAMPOUX VINEYARD HORSE HEAVEN HILLS RED
Wine & Spirits 96 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘The Sorella 2012 blend is two-thirds cabernet sauvignon, the vines close to 40 years old; the balance is merlot and cabernet franc. The flavors are dense and dark, vibrant cassis and black plum dusted with a fine powdered mineral glaze, the cabernet as much a feeling as a flavor. Everything is guided by a firm textural line, lean, refined, as elegant as a tailored suit, the finish firm and nimble at once. It’s cabernet at its most effortless.’
How Many: 84.95 each

s1225-105. 13 FIGGINS ESTATE WALLA WALLA VALLEY RED
Wine Enthusiast 93 - TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2016: ‘This blend offers beguiling, complex aromas of violets, scorched earth, cassis, black licorice and graphite. The flavors are tightly wound, showing poise and presence. It drinks well out of the gate but cellaring will be particularly rewarded. Best from 2022 through 2030.’
How Many: 89.95 each

s1225-106. 13 BLACK STALLION ESTATE NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 92 - 100 BEST BUYS OF 2016: ‘The Indelicato family makes this wine at their Napa Valley property, using grapes from Oak Knoll, Rutherford, Atlas Peak and Oakville. It shows the quality of the 2013 vintage in deep, plummy flavors and warm notes of exotic spice. The tannins add umami breadth with scents of black mushrooms and earth. Ready to enjoy with braised lamb. $30.’
How Many: 24.99 each

s1225-107. 10 HEITZ MARTHA’S VINEYARD NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 95 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘The remarkable aspect of this wine is its texture and weight, its flavors complete and fully concentrated into something as ephemeral as the brush of a silk scarf. It’s a gracious cabernet, sunny but not sweet—distinctly savory in the way its tannins cool the bright red fruit. This vineyard tucked into the western benchlands of Oakville benefits from the cooler morning sun, the vines organically farmed on alluvial gravels by the May family. Whatever eucalyptus influence there may be from the trees surrounding the vines reads in this vintage as green olive and black licorice rather than mintiness. As W&S senior editor Luke Sykora pointed out, ‘This has a gentle firmness, what people initially liked about Napa Valley cabernet in the 1950s and ’60s.’
How Many: 239.95 each

s1225-108. 13 JOSEPH PHELPS INSIGNIA NAPA VALLEY RED
Wine & Spirits 95 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘Insignia has been built as a regional blend since its first vintage in 1974, becoming an estate-grown wine in 2004. It’s based on cabernet sauvignon grown in six vineyards, from Suscol in the south to sites in Oak Knoll, Stags Leap and Rutherford, up to Phelps’s Spring Valley Home Ranch in St. Helena. Ashley Hepworth has fine-tuned the style, so Insignia is still a rich wine, but now, especially in 2013, shows the kind of firmness of structure that makes the richness profound. This vintage is fresh and lively, even while it is dense and powerful, as if the power is coming out of the black raspberry fruit as well as the bright, sparkling-fresh mineral tones of the tannins. Delicious now if you give it several hours in a decanter, this is destined to evolve into a classic. $250.’
How Many: 239.95 each

s1225-109. 12 STAG’S LEAP WINE CELLARS S.L.V. NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 95 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘Warren Winiarski planted this benchland site in 1970, a parcel adjacent and just to the south of Nathan Fay’s vineyard, which produced the grapes that had initially attracted Winiarski to this place at the rim of the Stags Leap escarpment. As it turned out, the soils at S.L.V. were different, primarily volcanic. The vineyard is best known for having produced the wine that won the Paris Tasting of 1976—from vines then three years old—and this latest vintage is a window into how that might have happened. The 35-acre site is planted to cabernet sauvignon, today at a range of ages; the oldest block, a five-acre hillside, dates to 1972 (there’s a small block of merlot that did not go into this wine). Aged in 100 percent new oak, S.L.V. has the density of flavor to completely absorb the oak and its tannins, transforming that espresso-roast scent into layers of dark and savory flavors of fresh black fruit. Even as the flavor is saturated and the texture supple, it feels airy and seamless, a wine of finesse and elegance rather than weight.’
How Many: 129.95 each

s1225-110. 13 DIAMOND CREEK RED ROCK TERRACE DIAMOND MOUNTAIN DISTRICT CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 95 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘Sexy cabernet. That may sound like a contradiction in terms, but Red Rock manages to find exotic bliss within the gravitas of cabernet’s structure. Farmed on a north-facing, terraced vineyard of iron-rich, rocky soil, this 2012 is immediately luscious and delicious, holding its cool power in a wild, gamey savor. The sophisticated, earthy flavors last for minutes, bringing the Mayacamas mountains into the glass. Humming with the energy of the vintage, this is a great tribute to Al Brounstein, the man who planted the original vines on the site, many of them still thriving today.’
How Many: 224.95 each

s1225-111. 12 KEENAN RESERVE SPRING MOUNTAIN DISTRICT CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine & Spirits 95 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘Michael Keenan believes there are two sides of cabernet, one fruity, one savory and herbal. He works to balance the two in the grapes from his Spring Mountain vineyards, consistently growing one of the greatest Napa Valley cabernets in his Reserve. The 2012 contrasts herbal notes of sage and forest floor with bright fruit that energizes the wine. That plump fruit creates a compelling texture against the stone-hard tannins, matching their austerity with silken grace. In the end, the flavors have the blackness of a well, mossy, stony, cool and deep. Compelling now, this is a wine that will benefit from a decade in the cellar.’
How Many: 99.95 each

s1225-112. 12 KATHRYN KENNEDY ESTATE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine Enthusiast 97 - TOP 100 2016: ‘A thoroughly elegant, serious and yet immensely enjoyable wine that stays lively many days after opening, this bottling from a regional icon shows dried violets, dried strawberry, crushed pepper and touches of leather and soy on the wondrous nose. Lithe black plum and elderberry fruits ride along a tight but forgiving tannic structure, with support from crushed gravel, asphalt, potpourri, sandalwood and cedar flavors. $100.’
How Many: 84.95 each

s1225-113. 14 HAHN CENTRAL COAST CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 100 BEST BUYS 2016: ‘A slightly herbal, minty character gives personality to this full-bodied, generous and richly textured wine. It is attractively dry, nicely tannic, layered with black cherry, wild berry and rosemary notes. Great to drink now through 2020 with rich meats or mushrooms.’
How Many: 14.99 each

s1225-114. 13 DAOU SOUL OF A LION ADELAIDA DISTRICT CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Wine Enthusiast 95 - TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2016: ‘Deep, lavish and creamy aromas of fudge, espresso, cola, vanilla and perfectly ripe black currants and berrries greet the nose with measured force. The wine lands on the palate with aplomb, framed by silky yet grippy tannins and boasting flavors of espresso, dense blueberry, black peppercorn, bay leaf and pencil shavings. The woody angles will intensify with age; drink 2018–2032.’
How Many: 114.95 each

s1225-115. 14 LEMELSON THEA’S SELECTION WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR
Wine Spectator 92 - TOP 100 2016: ‘Polished, expressive and deftly balanced, this is generous with its baby powder—accented cherry, lingonberry and floral flavors. Remains open and inviting through the long finish. Drink now through 2022.’
How Many: 31.99 each

s1225-116. 13 DOMAINE EDEN SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS PINOT NOIR
Wine Enthusiast 95 - TOP 100 2016: ‘While this wine's Mount Eden sister bottling may better stand the test of time, the Domaine Eden is what most people will most like to drink right now, and it's cheaper too. Aromas of dried violets, uncrushed boysenberries and pencil lead make for an ethereal nose that seems to hold secrets one must uncover. Precise tannins on the palate offer floral yet savory flavors of black sesame, nori, violet and mulberry. It's mellow yet mysterious.’
How Many: 34.99 each

s1225-117. 14 HAHN ESTATE SLH SANTA LUCIA HIGHLANDS PINOT NOIR
Wine Spectator 92 - TOP 100 2016: ‘The texture is plush, with lots of complex flavors, ranging from plum to anise to dusty, cedary oak. Satisfying from start to finish, ending with dusty, nutmeg-scented tannins. $30.’
How Many: 23.99 each

s1225-118. 13 GRAMERCY LOWER EAST COLUMBIA VALLEY SYRAH
Wine Enthusiast 93 - TOP 100 2016: ‘The aromas bring immediate appeal, with notes of brown stems, herbs, crushed flowers, smoked meat and black pepper. The flavors don't disappoint, showing purity, focus and generosity with a spot-on sense of balance and a lengthy finish that kicks it up a notch. Give it time to open up.’
How Many: 29.99 each

s1225-119. 13 SNOQUALMIE COLUMBIA VALLEY SYRAH
Wine Spectator 90 - TOP 100 VALUES 2016: ‘Sleek and seductive, this offers cherry, pomegranate, pepper and floral flavors carried by fine tannins that drape over the palate, finishing gently. Drink now through 2020.’
How Many: 9.99 each

s1225-120. 14 HAHN CENTRAL COAST GSM
Wine Spectator 90 - TOP 100 VALUES 2016: ‘Offers plenty of personality, with aromas of cherry, white pepper and smoky herb leading to zesty flavors of raspberry and licorice. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2022.’
How Many: 14.99 each

s1225-121. 13 QUPE A MODERN CENTRAL COAST RED
Wine & Spirits 91 - 100 BEST BUYS OF 2016: ‘This is a new wine from Bob Lindquist, a blend of grenache, syrah and mourvedre grown throughout California’s Central Coast, from the cool Santa Maria Valley to the warm hills of Paso Robles. The range of climates gives a wine that’s generous and tart at once. There’s a simple, delicious clarity to its flavor, a red raspberry juiciness that hints at gamey savor at the edges. It’s polished and ready to drink, with none of the overt sweetness that muddles many California red blends at this price. Buy a case for summer cookouts. $17.’
How Many: 14.99 each

s1225-122. SOKOL BLOSSER EVOLUTION BIG TIME RED
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 100 BEST BUYS 2016: ‘This nonvintage mélange includes Syrah, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and a splash of Evolution white for a wine that's totally unique, and totally cool. Ripe raspberry and cherry-candy flavors also carry a note of fresh mushroom. The wine rolls into a darker, black-cherry component as it comes through the back palate. It delivers big flavors at a budget price.’
How Many: 14.99 each

s1225-123. 14 FROG’S LEAP NAPA VALLEY ZINFANDEL
Wine & Spirits 94 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘John Williams is on a roll, following his exceptional 2013 Zinfandel with an equally delicious 2014. He dry-farms his 40-year-old vines, harvesting them at the same time as his petite sirah so he can co-ferment the fruit. That brings the tannins together in a refreshing, gentle structure that lifts the fruit flavors, presenting them as perfectly ripe forest berries. The tannins feel plush, even as they carry a note of black-peppercorn spice and manzanita. This is a beautiful Napa Valley red that happens to speak with an accent of zin. $32.’
How Many: 29.99 each

s1225-124. 15 DRY CREEK VINEYARD SONOMA FUME BLANC
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 100 BEST BUYS 2016: ‘The wine that started it all for the producer, first bottled in 1972, this was 100% stainless-steel fermented and drips in fruity citrus. Lemon pith continues the theme, accented by notes of pineapple salsa and crisp green apple, remaining vibrant and fresh throughout.’
How Many: 14.99 each

s1225-125. 15 RODNEY STRONG ESTATE CHARLOTTE’S HOME NORTHERN SONOMA SAUVIGNON BLANC
Wine Spectator 90 - TOP 100 VALUES 2016: ‘Up-front peach and apricot flavors segue into a juicy lemon core, with whiffs of smoke and dried flowers. Finishes with a charming note of yellow raisin. $17.’
How Many: 11.99 each

s1225-126. 14 MERRY EDWARDS RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC
Wine Spectator 93 - TOP 100 2016: ‘Succulent, lush and rich, with fleshy mango, melon and peach flavors up front, leading to a core of pineapple, lemon and honeysuckle notes. The smoky edge and nervy acidity weave in and out, giving this a fresh finish.’
How Many: 38.99 each

s1225-127. 14 ROBERT MONDAVI NAPA VALLEY FUME BLANC
Wine Spectator 90 - TOP 100 VALUES 2016: ‘Juicy and crisp, with green papaya and lemon flavors that are bright and refreshing, highlighting fresh lemon thyme notes on the finish. Shows a good balance of intensity and restraint. $20.’

s1225-128. 14 TANGENT PARAGON VINEYARD EDNA VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 100 BEST BUYS 2016: ‘Classic and yet distinctive in aromatics, this bottling from the Niven family's cool-climate vineyard shows cut grass, wet cement and a touch of struck match on the narrowly focused nose. The palate intrigues, with fresh-cut thyme and oregano lifted by a white pepper element.’
How Many: 12.99 each

s1225-129. 13 DOMAINE SERENE EVENSTAD RESERVE DUNDEE HILLS CHARDONNAY
Wine Enthusiast 95 - TOP 100 2016: ‘This is a sensational vintage for this cuvée, which is part of the winery's extensive Chardonnay lineup. It offers intense fruit concentration and retains the opulence for which the winery is known. Rich in a buttered, toasted nut flavor, the mouthfeel is creamy and sensual. The finish lingers for several minutes, and the wine drinks as well or better on the second day it's been open.’
How Many: 57.95 each

s1225-130. 14 PARDUCCI SMALL LOT MENDOCINO CHARDONNAY
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 100 BEST BUYS 2016: ‘Nicely balanced, full of tasty fruit flavors, and accented by light vanilla and nutmeg, this is a seamless wine that has lots of appeal. At this reasonable price, it will make a great go-to choice—the kind to stock by the case. $13.’
How Many: 11.99 each

s1225-131. 14 WAYFARER WAYFARER VINEYARD FORT ROSS - SEAVIEW CHARDONNAY
Wine Enthusiast 98 - TOP 100 2016: ‘This is yet another stunning wine from this site, guided by the capable hands of Winemaker and Viticulturalist Bibiana González Rave, who has coaxed from it beguiling layers of complex concentration and sublime notions of tang and salt. The only white from a sea of Pinot Noir grown here, it speaks to what the extreme Sonoma Coast can bring to the variety—a celebration of lemon zest, crisp apple and brioche delicately wrapped in minerality.’

How Many: 62.95 each

s1225-133. 14 KUNDE SONOMA VALLEY CHARDONNAY
Wine & Spirits 92 - 100 BEST BUYS OF 2016: ‘The chardonnay plots at the Kunde estate start at the valley floor and ascend Sonoma Valley’s eastern hills to an elevation of 1,450 feet. This comes from young vines and is made in an opulent barrel-fermented style. Yet for all its roundness, there’s plenty of structure underneath. Aromas of chamomile and damp earth freshen its hazelnut toastiness, and there’s enough acidity to hold its powerful flavors in taut, vinous clarity.’
How Many: 19.99 each

s1225-134. 14 PATZ & HALL HYDE VINEYARD CARNEROS CHARDONNAY
Wine Enthusiast 95 - TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2016: ‘This fine marriage of site and winemaker shows experience and intuition at work, presenting a full-bodied, lush and plush expression of tremendous depth and complexity. It offers notes of tart apple, licorice and a wealth of orange zest, which adds a touch of citrusy crispness to the naturally buoyant minerality and nuanced oak. It has much more to share; drink now through 2020.’

s1225-135. 13 THOMAS FOGARTY ESTATE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS CHARDONNAY
Wine Enthusiast 95 - TOP 100 2016: ‘From one of the preeminent Chardonnay producers in the country comes their least expensive yet perhaps most stunning bottling, showing strong lemon rind, sea salt, Gravenstein apple and a floral touch of honeysuckle on the nose. The wondrously zippy and saline palate is framed by a grippy, grapefruit-rind-led tension, but opens just enough to allow the slightest hints of lemon curd and delicate marzipan warmth.’
How Many: 34.99 each

s1225-136. 14 CALERA CENTRAL COAST CHARDONNAY
Wine Spectator 90 - TOP 100 VALUES 2016: ‘A delicate style that relies on subtlety and finesse, capturing the ripe essence of white peach, mandarin orange, pear and citrus flavors. Long and elegant, ending clean and refreshing.’

s1225-141. 14 DR. KONSTANTIN FRANK DRY FINGER LAKES RIESLING
Wine Enthusiast 91 - TOP 100 BEST BUYS 2016: ‘With a palate-drenching fountain of peach nectar, grapefruit and orange blossom notes, this Finger Lakes standard packs a surprising punch in the 2014 vintage. Dry, yet intensely ripe, it boasts long, lingering streaks of honey and fruit offset by zigzagging daggers of lime zest and lemon. It's penetrating and deliciously persistent.’

Saturated flavors of blackberry and chocolate finish with rooty berry, chocolate and mocha flavors. Drink from 2017–2025.’
How Many: 94.95 each

s1225-145. 13 ROTHSCHILD-CATENA CARO MENDOZA RED
Wine & Spirits 94 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘This is one of the best vintages of Caro, the joint venture between the Catena family of Mendoza and Lafite from Bordeaux. Half of the wine is cabernet sauvignon from Altamira, in the heights of Uco Valley, providing a firm structure, the other half is malbec from old vines in Las Compuertas, adding all the notes of violets and sour cherries that one can find in the best Luján de Cuyo malbec. The red fruit and floral notes outline the contours of a wine that seems athletic and tight, rather than fat. Cellar this for five years or more; it will continue to gain in complexity.’

Wine Enthusiast 94 - TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2016: ‘Lusty notes of coconut, charcoal, vanilla and herbs grace core blackberry and cassis aromas. This is massive and widespread on the palate, but the key to its success is impeccable balance. Toasty, minty flavors of blackberry and cassis are chocolaty and lightly herbal, while the finish blends lushness, power, heft and smoky, herbal flavors that go on and on. Drink this Carmenère-led blend through 2024.’
How Many: 109.95 each

s1225-156. 14 ERRAZURIZ MAX RESERVA ACONCAGUA COAST PINOT NOIR
Wine Spectator 90 - TOP 100 VALUES 2016: ‘A suave red, with a silky mouthfeel and medium-grained tannins behind the flavors of cherry, plum and hazelnut. The spicy finish is long and rich, revealing accents of sandalwood. Drink now through 2019.’

s1225-158. 12 CRAGGY RANGE TE MUNA ROAD VINEYARD MARTINBOROUGH PINOT NOIR
Wine & Spirits 94 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘This is a Narnia wine, its flavors otherworldly, their shape as regal and bold as a lion’s mane, the ruff of a strange and magical beast feeding on onion grass, herbs, flowers and then meat grilled over an open fire. It has a vibrant lightness and energy that lives in the shadows. This grows on the top terrace at Te Muna Road, where the Huangarua River left a deep bed of gravel and stones under a thin surface of sandy loam more than 20,000 years ago. Steve Smith, MW, planted eight clones of pinot noir segmented into 40 blocks, harvested late after a cool season, fermented with 10 percent whole clusters in oak vats and stainless steel tanks, and aged the wine in French oak barriques (25 percent new). All of that combines into a pinot noir with outrageous complexity and the vitality to support it for a decade in the bottle. $46.’

s1225-169. 13 CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE, LE VIEUX DONJON
Wine & Spirits 94 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘Claire Fabre, like her father Lucien Michel before her, makes only one red, focused on grenache with some syrah, mourvèdre and cinsault in the blend, pulled from the family’s 35 acres of vines. Most of those vines are very old, and this wine seems to channel the intensity of their fruit in its vividness. It’s not a big wine, but it feels expansive, hitting every hallmark scent and flavor of the south of France, from ripe figs to wild fennel, olives and even merguez. There’s no wood to speak of—it’s fermented in cement and aged in neutral foudres. Instead, it feels powerful in its nakedness, a bare and beautiful portrait of place.’

s1225-172. 13 DOURO PINTAS CHARACTER, WINE & SOUL
Wine & Spirits 94 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘Sandra Tavares and Jorge Serodio Borges make Pintas from an 85-year-old mixed planting in the Vale Mendiz, the heart of the Douro Valley just above the town of Pinhão. Pintas Character comes from an adjacent vineyard where the vines are 45 years old. Both wines ferment in lagares and age in a significant percentage of new oak (70 percent of Pintas, 50 percent for Character). While the 2013 Pintas is, for now, overwhelmed by its vanilla scents and oak tannins, Pintas Character is a glorious, sunny wine that’s both formidable and gentle. It’s supple, with bold purple fruit and schist dust to the tannins, needing a day to get past a touch of reduction and another day to start to sing. Catch this two or three years from now, when it should begin to open up. $40.’

s1225-173. 12 BEIRA ATLANTICO COLHEITA SELECCIONADA, LUIS PATO
Wine & Spirits 90 - 100 BEST BUYS OF 2016: ‘Luis Pato has been seeking creative ways to fully mature his baga grapes for close to 30 years. He harvests a portion of the fruit on the vines in August, to allow the rest of it to ripen more expeditiously. Some of that early harvest goes into this wine, a blend of baga (70 percent) with touriga nacional. One taster described it as a wine with both eyes open, the flavors clearly drawn in notes of herbs, bay and forest berries. The tannins are notably supple for an early-picked wine, though there are some untamed high notes and sweaty horse elements that may put off some drinkers. For baga fans, it’s a wine to drink with roast game birds.’

This wine is a good example of the move. A blend of 50 percent garnacha, 40 percent cariñena and 10 percent syrah grown in the warm hills of Gratallops, it’s filled with lush raspberry and strawberry flavors that reflect the region’s sunny, hot days, as well as mineral tones from the soils that bring freshness and depth. s1225-198. 10 IRON HORSE CLASSIC VINTAGE GREEN VALLEY BRUT
Wine & Spirits 93 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘The 2010 vintage on the North Coast was mostly cool, until a blistering late-August heat wave created sunburn challenges and uneven ripening in many vineyards. At the cool Iron Horse estate in Green Valley, the effects were less drastic. In fact, winemaker David Munksgard’s pinot-dominant Classic Vintage Brut is remarkably pure in 2010, the flavors intense and red-fruited at first, slowly receding in a delicate mousse that lasts on cool scents of chamomile, lemon blossoms and biscuit. The acidity is bright, the texture gentle, evoking the ocean breezes and undulating hills of Green Valley. $42.’

s1225-200. 10 LOUIS ROEDERER ROSE BRUT CHAMPAGNE
Wine & Spirits 96 - 100 BEST OF 2016: ‘This wine’s pale cloud-pink color is a mirror to its pale pink fruit, a pink with bass notes and brighter harmonies that fill the wine with freshness and gracious flavor impact. This gains its color from pinot noir grown in Cumières resting for a brief, gentle maceration on the skins, picking up red fruit notes without any sense of tannins or astringency. Blended with chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, it creates a wine with intensity in its structure, while it feels like nothing more than a caress. The clarity and precision of the wine allow the flavors to last unfettered. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon built a new winemaking facility devoted to rosé in 2007, and his talent with rosé wines may be unmatched in contemporary Champagne. His 2010 is all of a piece, a joyous rosé. $80.’

The wine can continue for many years, certainly to 2025 and beyond. $520.’

s1225-205. CARPANO DRY VERMOUTH liter
Wine & Spirits - BEST OF 2016: ‘Carpano Antica Formula red vermouth has been a treasured bar staple, if not a cult item, since the modern cocktail revival. Enthusiasts who have traveled to Italy’s Piedmont may know of the existence of the other Carpano vermouths, but only in the last year have they become available in the US. While the vermouth market has exploded in recent years with new products, to taste this Carpano is to sample a vermouth without an agenda or a hook. It simply and straightforwardly provides the function of a dry aromatized, fortified wine. And while it may lack the complexities or unusual flavorings of some of the new vermouths, it does the job most of us ask of our white vermouths better than any of them: It mixes beautifully. That is, it makes the best martini of any vermouth I’ve tasted. Because it integrates so well, it can be used in greater proportion than other vermouths (I like 3 ounces of gin to a half-ounce of Carpano Dry). Incidentally, don’t confuse it with Carpano Bianco, which is sweeter.’
How Many: 24.99 each

s1225-206. RANSOM SWEET VERMOUTH half liter
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 100 2016: ‘Packed with citrus and dried fruit, this bold, tawny-orange vermouth has a scent that suggests dried orange peel and dried fig, while the palate mixes grapefruit, orange and honey. The herbal finish is redolent of warm chamomile, cardamom and baking spice.’

s1225-207. VICTORY GOLDEN MONKEY TRIPEL 12 oz bottle
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 25 BEERS 2016: ‘This is a bold, full, creamy beer, as a tripel should be. A gorgeous clear orange-gold color in the glass, it opens with a warm bouquet of spiced orange, honey and tangy wheat. The mouthfeel is round and generous, with a sweet spiced-citrus flavor that's framed by softer hints of honeysuckle, white tea and ginger. The warmth and spice of the finish lifts the ripe flavors and slightly viscous texture off the palate.’

s1225-208. UNIBROUE DON DE DIEU BELGIAN STRONG PALE ALE 12 oz bottle
Wine Enthusiast 96 - TOP 25 BEERS 2016: ‘This is an intense and flavorful yet remarkably balanced selection that pours a pristine golden color with a frothy white head that shows good retention. Initial scents of orange, wheat, apricot, peach and yeasty spice waft from the glass and continue through to the medium-bodied palate. A subtle hint of wild animal or barnyard character weaves in and out of perception, like a pleasant tease. Bright carbonation helps keep the mouthfeel lively and refreshing, while the finish is spicy and slightly dry, with only a hint of alcohol warmth.’
How Many: 2.89 each

s1225-209. CHIMAY GRANDE RESERVE BLUE 11.2 oz bottle
Wine Enthusiast 94 - TOP 25 BEERS 2016: ‘Originally brewed as a Christmas beer in 1948, this dark and flavorful brew has wide distribution and is thankfully relatively easy to find across the U.S. It's loaded with rich, caramel aromas and flavors, with supporting notes of baking spice, dried cherry and date, like a holiday fruit cake. Hints of buttered banana and caramelized sugar unfold on the palate, resulting in a flavor reminiscent of Bananas Foster. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with superb balance and little warmth despite the beer's significant alcohol, making it sinfully easy to drink. Lingering sweet-spice and chocolate notes grace the long finish. It's a perfect selection to bring along to any holiday party and share with friends or family; pair it with a standing-rib roast or any braised meat dish.’
How Many: 5.29 each

s1225-210. AYINGER BAVARIAN WEIZEN BOCK half liter bottle
Wine Enthusiast 94 - TOP 25 BEERS 2016: ‘This is a classic wheat ale, but brewed to be as strong as a bock or double bock, so the resulting selection is one of serious depth and intensity, while still remaining clean and refreshing. It pours a hazy amber-tangerine color, with a thick, frothy off-white head that really lingers. The aromas are all wheat beer—yeasty spice, banana, orange peel, apple and a touch of bubble gum. Those notes carry through to the medium-weight palate, supported by the core of bready malt and toasted wheat that are lifted on the close by bright, slightly prickly carbonation. Overall, this is a rich and decadent yet surprisingly drinkable and well-balanced brew.’

It’s flavorful and creamy, but then the palate livens up with a citrus oil burst on the finish, followed by a soft hint of dry, bitter chocolate. Overall, it’s remarkably balanced and easy to drink, with an endless finish.’

Aromas and flavors of toasted nut, bittersweet cocoa, butter crunch and raisin, with accents of soft hops and sweet smoke, add depth to the roasted malt core. The mouthfeel is medium weight, full and satisfying, with good carbonation to liven up the intense, roasted flavors and long finish. A drinkable, well-balanced and flavorful brew.’

Wine Enthusiast 97 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘The first product released by Eddie Russell (son of Jimmy Russell) as Master Distiller is a knockout. This powerful, flavorful, limited edition whiskey starts with a rush of rich salted caramel and goes down warming and butterscotchy. The finish is exceedingly long, with toffee, chocolate, hazelnut and a faint smoky exhale. It needs nothing more than a bit of water to balance the alcohol heat. Aged 17 years.’

s1225-217. JOHN BARR RESERVE BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY
Wine Enthusiast 91 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘A mix of malt and grain whiskies from the Highland and Speyside regions yields a fresh apple scent accented by a touch of vanilla. On the palate, this is smooth, light and easy-sipping, leading with vanilla and caramel, plus gentle peat smoke floating into a baking spice finish. Sip or mix.’

s1225-218. THE FEATHERY BLENDED MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
Wine Enthusiast 93 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Made from a blend of rare and old Highland malts, this tawny Scotch is earthy and complex. The aroma mixes baked apple, subtle smoke and toffee richness. The palate is relatively restrained, starting with unsweetened chocolate and campfire smoke that evolves into a smoky-spiced midpalate tinged with espresso. It finishes long, with subtle, earthy funk reminiscent of aged cheeses. The name refers to a predecessor of the golf ball, a leather hide stuffed with chicken feathers. $62.’

s1225-219. WHISTLE PIG 15 YEAR OLD STRAIGHT RYE WHISKEY
Wine Enthusiast 97 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘This remarkably complex sipper leads with caramel and vanilla, then reverberates with rounded dried fruit, sherry and almond, fading into a long, gentle baking spice finish. Made with 100% rye sourced from Canada, this is finished in barrels made from Vermont oak and bottled in Vermont.’
How Many: 199.99 each

s1225-220. GEORGE DICKEL RYE WHISKEY
Wine Enthusiast 95 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘On the smoother, sweeter side of the rye spectrum, this whiskey offers a restrained aroma that mixes vanilla and oak and luxe, bold flavors that resound with -cigar wrapper, leather, toffee and cocoa. The long finish is perked up by a fleeting cut-apple freshness, marked by allspice and clove. Cocktail friendly.’

s1225-221. MASTERSON’S 10 YEAR OLD STRAIGHT RYE WHISKY
Wine Enthusiast 94 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘The complex aroma suggests rich caramel, maple and butterscotch. The same flavors are echoed on the palate, showing a flash of sweetness, drying alcohol heat and a spicy finish. Water tames this 100% rye to a maple-almond flavor profile, finishing with cocoa and plenty of mouthwatering spice.’
How Many: 78.99 each

s1225-222. JAMESON CASKMATES IRISH WHISKEY
Wine Enthusiast 91 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Beer lovers will enjoy this Irish whiskey aged in craft beer barrels. It appears burnished gold and smells oaky and grainy. The flavor evokes a pleasing combination of beer and whiskey, accented with hops, bitter chocolate and a clove-spiced finish. It even feels slightly fizzy, like the carbonation of beer.’
How Many: 32.99 each

s1225-223. BAIN’S CAPE MOUNTAIN WHISKY
Wine Enthusiast 91 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘This unusual whiskey was built like a Bourbon—made with 100% corn and aged in ex-Bourbon casks for an average of five years—but sips like a mellow Canadian whiskey. It's supersoft, with lots of vanilla and sweet maple, plus a gentle, drying finish of allspice and clove. A surprising, rounded black cherry note suggests Manhattans in this whiskey's future.’

s1225-224. BAYOU SILVER RUM
Wine Enthusiast 93 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘This bold, unusual rum calls for tropical drinks at first sniff. The enticing aroma mixes juicy orange, cocoa, marshmallow and an earthy note reminiscent of mezcal. Look for mild sweetness and a fair amount of alcohol bite. It's made using sugar and molasses from Louisiana, one of the few U.S. states that grows sugarcane. $22.’

s1225-225. BACARDI GRAN RESERVA MAESTRO DE RON RUM
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Smooth and mildly sweet, this rum has a pronounced vanilla note, tapering off to a gentle marshmallow fade followed by a hint of white pepper heat. It's made using a ‘double aging process’—rums aged for at least one year are blended and then returned to white oak barrels for an additional three months.’

s1225-226. PLANTATION 3 STARS RUM liter
Wine Enthusiast 94 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Blended by Cognac Ferrand using rums from Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica, this elegant newcomer is expected to reach the U.S. in fall 2012. Look for sweet, candied citrus-peel aromas and flavors, enlivened with white pepper and fresh ginger. $25.’
How Many: 21.99 each

s1225-227. PLANTATION O.F.T.D. RUM liter
Wine & Spirits - BEST SPIRITS OF 2016: ‘Some of the world’s best rums are being made by a man who cut his teeth on Cognac, Alexandre Gabriel, owner of Maison Ferrand. Not long after reviving that brandy house, Gabriel turned his attention to rum, creating Plantation and endowing it with a Cognac distiller’s sense of balance, elegance and variety. OFTD (Old-Fashioned Traditional Dark), created with input from rum specialists including cocktail historian David Wondrich and tiki expert Martin Cate, is a blockbuster. Earlier Plantation dark rums had relied exclusively on Trinidadian stocks, but OFTD instead blends Jamaican rum’s oily funk with Guyana’s focused intensity and Barbados’s lithe grace—all in a powerhouse package at 138 proof. This is a mixing rum that will stand up to even the stoutest of punches.’

s1225-228. MARTIN MILLER’S WESTBOURNE STRENGTH GIN
Wine Enthusiast 94 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Crisp and classic, this gin is ideal for martinis. A light cucumber aroma leads the nose, opening up with more cucumber and juniper on the palate, finishing smooth and brisk on nutmeg and coriander accents. $40.’

s1225-229. DIPLOME 1945 RECIPE DRY GIN
Wine Enthusiast 91 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘The base spirit of this gin is distilled from sugar beets, not grain, which may explain its pronounced sweetness (note: the recipe dates back to 1945). The aroma is almost neutral, with just a faint breeze of pine. On the palate, the juniper-pine note comes forward, along with a marshmallow sweetness, though it finishes with citrus chased by earthy anise and black pepper.’ From France.

s1225-230. GIN MG LONDON DRY GIN
Wine Enthusiast 91 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Ideal for martinis and G&Ts, look for a brisk, bracing aroma that mixes juniper and anise. The palate is smooth, dry and citrusy, with most of the flavor on the cinnamon-accented finish.’ From Spain.

s1225-231. HERRADURA ULTRA ANEJO TEQUILA
Wine Enthusiast 95 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘This unusual crystal-clear añejo, launched in June 2015, seems to be aiming for the premium vodka nightclub crowd. The bottling mixes añejo with extra añejo, plus a hint of agave nectar. Tequila purists likely won't approve, but the subtle coconut-pineapple-vanilla flavor profile—more drying and astringent than rum or vodka—seems ideal for mixing tropical cocktails and is addictive to sip.’
How Many: 54.99 each

s1225-232. GRAN PATRON PIEDRA TEQUILA
Wine Enthusiast 97 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Patrón's first-ever extra añejo is aged at least three years, and is named for the stone wheel (piedra) that crushes agave to make Tequila. It has an amber hue and a rich aroma that mixes caramel, dried fruit and peppery notes. The palate is silky and rounded, with lots of caramel and oak up front, tapering off gently with anise, ginger and cinnamon.’

s1225-233. VODKILA STRAIGHT
Wine Enthusiast 92 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘A blend of 80% corn vodka and 20% blanco tequila, bottled in Michigan, this offers a warm honey aroma and soft, slightly viscous texture. The palate echoes honey sweetness and layers in plenty of spice: cinnamon, nutmeg, white pepper and a long finish featuring gentle cayenne heat.’ Made in Michigan.
How Many: 34.99 each

s1225-234. ST. GEORGE ALL PURPOSE VODKA
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Distilled from grain and fruit—specifically, Bartlett pears—this complex vodka doesn't have the neutral profile some vodka drinkers expect. The warm scent suggests roasted almonds. On the palate, vanilla and almond intertwine with a mild sweetness that recalls agave, with a barely perceptible, mouthwatering salinity. The finish is malty and roasty. The overall effect is a vodka that ever-so-subtly winks at the whiskey bottle down the shelf.’
How Many: 31.99 each

s1225-235. WYBOROWA WODKA
Wine Enthusiast 90 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Overall, this rye-based vodka is neutral and pristine, with a faint sweetness on the nose and a palate that hints at bitter almond. It offers a modest peppery bite on the finish. Recommended for Bloody Marys and other savory sips. $16.’
How Many: 13.99 each

s1225-236. LINIE AQUAVIT
Wine Enthusiast 95 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Stored in former Sherry casks, this aquavit famously takes a sea voyage across the world, sailing to Australia and back, crossing the equator or ‘linie’ twice. The end result is a bright buttercup hue and mellow vanilla, spearmint, clove and oak tones, plus a silky butterscotch finish. $30.’
How Many: 25.99 each

s1225-237. CYNAR 70 liter
Wine & Spirits - BEST SPIRITS OF 2016: ‘It’s not often that you see a dusty denizen of the back bar—especially one as niche as this classic artichoke-infused amaro—given a high-profile reboot. The numeral in the spirit’s name refers to its proof, which is more than double the original Cynar’s 33. A higher alcohol content allows a spirit to carry more flavor, which Cynar 70 joyfully does. Whereas the original Cynar has a puckering, bitter crackle, Cynar 70 allows deeper, darker, sweeter notes to emerge, reminiscent of coffee and dark chocolate gilded with orange peel and cinnamon. After a silky crescendo of complex flavor, it glides into a characteristically bitter, but not puckering finish. The original Cynar is a great mixer, but creamy Cynar 70 can stand on its own. All you other amaros, watch out. $37.’

s1225-238. ST. GEORGE BRUTO AMERICANO
Wine & Spirits - BEST SPIRITS OF 2016: ‘A new year can hardly pass without another radiant offering from Lance Winters and Alameda-based St. George Spirits. Bruto Americano is an American aperitivo, bittered largely with gentian root, while California-grown Seville oranges and buckthorn bark provide orange and woodsy notes. The flavor may recall Campari (with a hint of Aperol citrus)—as does the color, a lush vermillion derived from cochineal, as Campari used to be—but the soothing texture and complexity puts it in a category of its own. BA’s gorgeous Italian futurist label shines brilliantly with a sense of novelty, as well as optimism that even crowded, old categories can be refreshed.’

s1225-239. BRANCA MENTA
Wine Enthusiast 92 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘With a concentrated spearmint aroma, this liqueur has a chocolaty core and plenty of cooling mint, like a Thin Mint cookie with a moderately bitter edge. Use to sass up a classic Grasshopper or other drinks that call for crème de cacao.’
How Many: 27.99 each

s1225-240. ANCHO REYES ANCHO CHILE LIQUEUR
Wine Enthusiast 91 - TOP 100 SPIRITS 2016: ‘Though it’s made with ancho chiles, this liqueur is modest on the spice scale. Caramel-y brown in the glass, look for a lightly herbaceous aroma similar to root beer and rounded flavors that mix caramel and cocoa with raisin and cinnamon heat, with a faint smokiness on the finish. Particularly harmonious mixed in cocktails with brown spirits like whiskey.’
