INTRODUCTION

2009 BORDEAUX FUTURES - THE VINTAGE

2009 was a no-brainer vintage for Bordeaux’s winemakers. A near-perfect growing season produced wonderfully ripe, healthy red fruit of high extract, tannin, and alcohol potential. Shades of 1947. Given the state of winemaking knowledge today compared to 62 years back, it’s a virtual given that 2009's high quality fruit will yield memorable wines throughout the hierarchy of Bordeaux red-wine appellations. Sauternes and Barsac too witnessed a superior vintage.

2009 BORDEAUX FUTURES - WHAT TO BUY AND WHEN

All the world’s big money will be chasing the top 300 Chateaux and prestige cuvees. Opening prices will be high and quickly soar higher, especially following the release of Robert Parker’s ratings late this month. These wines will be pursued as trophies and investments. There are over 7000 additional Chateaux in Bordeaux, many making multiple cuvees. This will prove a memorable vintage across all appellations. Unlike the Grands Vins, most of which will not be shipped until early 2013, the rest of the 2009s will reach our shores just 6-18 months from now. Undoubtedly, prices at arrival will be higher than futures quotes, unless the euro experiences an unexpected collapse. 2009 seems to me to represent the best futures opportunity since 1982 for buying clarets that fly below investors’ radar.

ROBERT PARKER ON 2009 BORDEAUX

‘I hope readers will take a serious look at many of the less prestigious appellations and wines from those areas as they will no doubt represent fabulous bargains in 2009. Given the overall style of the 2009s, which combine creamy, voluptuous textures and sensational fruit-driven opulence with remarkable finesse, precision, purity, and vibrancy, the best of the ‘little’ wines will be delicious young, as will many of the classified growths. This is a magical vintage!’ While I applaud most of this quote, I dispute the term ‘little wines’. Are the top 300 classified growths and prestige cuvees ‘big’ wines and the other 6700+ Chateaux ‘little’? The purpose of this feature is to spotlight ‘the best of the rest’. These wines are hardly ‘little’, especially in 2009.

s0412-114. 09 CHATEAU POTENSAC, CRU EXCEPTIONNEL, MEDOC case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/2 Parker 89-91/100 - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE: ‘Probably the finest Potensac ever made, eclipsing even the stunning 1982. Dense, rich, and full-bodied with lots of freshness, the wine reveals abundant red and black currant fruit, a distinctive minerality, and a plush, full-bodied mouthfeel. It should drink well for 10-15 years.’ Jancis Robinson 17/20: ‘Minerals and great ripeness. But very much restrained by a corset of structure. Great lift and pizzazz. Really serious. This has a really long term future. 2018-2030.’

How Many: 119.00 each case

s0412-117. 09 CHATEAU LA TOUR DE BY, CRU BOURGEOIS SUPERIEUR, MEDOC case of 12 bottles
Jancis Robinson 17/20: ‘Very dark purple. Super-fragrant, scented wine. Glossy nose with no hint of excess sweetness or alcohol. Sweet palate entry and then very well managed tannins and the exotic black fruits richness of 2009 insinuates itself even on this bastion of Médoc restraint!. A bit of a kick on the end but not jagged or drying. Good harmony. Good mouthful of intense fruit. Needs a little time for the tannins to melt. Cooler and drier than most. Fresh finish.’ Tanzer 88-91/100: ‘Exotic notes of Oriental spices and cedar complicate ripe plum and blackberry jam aromas. Fresh and clean on entry, showing a peppery lift to the rich blackberry and mineral flavors. The wine's youthful tannins will require at least a couple years to resolve fully, but this is a very successful, elegantly styled wine with a persistent mineral finish.’ I go back to the 1961 vintage with this estate. I think I still have some in my cellar. It’s a keeper. DICK’S PICKS.
How Many: 219.00 each case

s0412-121. 09 CHATEAU VIEUX ROBIN CUVEE BOIS DE LUNIER, CRU BOURGEOIS SUPERIEUR, MEDOC case of 12 bottles

Decanter 16/20 - RECOMMENDED; Parker 87-89/100 - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE: Long-time readers know d’Aurilhac is one of my favorite under-the-radar Bordeaux in top vintages. This impressively made Medoc offers a lot fo quality for its price. The 2009 reveals copious black cherry, black currant, earth, and spice notes intertwined with a hint of background oak. A luscious texture, a succulent style, and a juicy, long finish suggest it will drink well for 5-7 years.’ DICK’S PICKS.
How Many: 199.00 each case

s0412-124. 09 CHATEAU BEAUMONT, CRU BOURGEOIS SUPERIEUR, HAUT MEDOC case of 12 bottles
Wine Spectator 87-90/100: ‘A fruity wine, with chocolate and berry character. Delicate finish.’ Gave us a stunning 2006 that surpassed vintage standards and revealed greater barrel complexity than previous vintages. I’ve followed this property’s wines since the 1969 vintage. It’s never made better. DICK’S PICKS.
How Many: 179.00 each case

s0412-125. 09 CHATEAU BELLE VUE, HAUT MEDOC case of 12 bottles
Parker 90-92/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘This has been one of the most consistent Medoc cru bourgeois over a number of years, and the 2009 may reach new quality heights. A big-time sleeper of the vintage, this wine of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 20% Petit Verdot boasts notes of creme de cassis and spring flowers, terrific fruit, and sweet but noticeable tannin. It can be drunk young or cellared for 8-10 years.’ DICK’S PICKS.
How Many: 239.00 each case

s0412-126. 09 CHATEAU LA BERNADOTTE, HAUT MEDOC case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/2 Parker 90-92/100 - OUTSTANDING - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE: ‘The finest La Bernadotte made to date, this 2009 reveals a big, sweet kiss of black cherries, black currants, charcoal, and spice. With layers of fruit, decent acidity, freshness, and precision, and an opulent, fleshy, succulent style, it should drink easily for a decade or more.’ DICK’S PICKS.
How Many: 269.00 each case

s0412-127. 09 CHATEAU BONNEAU, HAUT MEDOC case of 12 bottles
Wine Spectator 85-88/100: ‘Delicate and fruity, with light tannins and a sliced plum and cherry character.’

Wine Spectator 88-91/100: ‘Pretty aromas of currant and berries, with a mineral undertone. Firm tannins and a fruity finish. Nice wood under it all. Well-crafted young red. Could be best ever from here.’ That would be quite an achievement, as Cambon has given us such memorable wines in so many past vintages. I want some of this! DICK’S PICKS.

New entry on 6/2 Parker 92-94/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Looks to be the best they have ever produced. With extraordinarily elegant floral notes intermixed with raspberry, black currant, cherry, and spice box, it is not massive, but again, very seamless, with beautiful precision, sweet tannins, and an endearing fleshiness and depth of flavor that are neither heavy nor fatiguing. This wine will be relatively approachable in 3-5 years and drink well for 25-30.’ DICK’S PICKS.

Wine Spectator 87-90/100: ‘Sweet tobacco, with berry and spices on the nose. Medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins. Pretty Citran. Very good.’ Tanzer 87-90/100: ‘Fresh and floral on the nose, with ripe red fruits emerging with air. On the palate, a lovely mineral presence frames and lifts the ripe raspberry and blackberry flavors. The satisfying finish features very smooth tannins and sneaky complexity, with lingering hints of mango and cedar. A seriously made wine with considerable depth and energy, though probably best for drinking over the next decade.’

Parker 90-92/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Seems more explosive and concentrated than prior vintages. I’m not sure it is the finest I have ever tasted, but it boasts copious creme de cassis, cedar wood, underbrush, and spice notes. Beautiful opulence, silky tannins, and a long finish suggest this sleeper of the vintage will drink well for 2-3 decades.’ We go way back to 1955 with this Chateau’s wines. s0412-140. 09 CHATEAU LIVERSAN, CRU BOURGEOIS SUPERIEUR, HAUT MEDOC case of 12 bottles
Wine Spectator 88-91/100: ‘Currant and berries, with some sweet tobacco. Ripe tannins and a fruity finish. Very pleasant.’ As is the 2006, which we stock at $19.99. DICK’S PICKS.
How Many: 149.00 each case

s0412-141. 09 CHATEAU MALESCASSE, CRU BOURGEOIS SUPERIEUR, HAUT MEDOC case of 12 bottles
Tanzer 87-90/100: ‘Complex nose features delicate, almost Margaux-like aromas of cassis, fresh tomato, clove, damp earth and dried underbrush. Then smooth and sweet on the palate and weightier than the nose suggests, with a velvety texture to the cassis and blackberry flavors. Very fine tannins and a saline nuance add interest on the moderately long finish. A very good wine that owing to its ripe fruit flavors is easier to identify blind as a product of the '09 vintage than as an Haut-Medoc.’
How Many: 199.00 each case

s0412-142. 09 CHATEAU DE MALLERET, CRU BOURGEOIS SUPERIEUR, HAUT MEDOC case of 12 bottles

Petit Verdot is a superstar variety that needs a warm vintage to show its stuff. It thrived in 2009. Very informative website.

Oodles of black currant fruit are intermixed with some licorice, underbrush, and foresty notes. Great fruit, a sumptuous, fleshy texture, and plenty of succulence and length make for a big, rich, nicely textured wine to drink over the next decade.’ DICK’S PICKS.

s0412-155. 09 CHATEAU CALON SEGUR, 3ME GRAND CRU, SAINT ESTEPHE case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/14 Wine Spectator 93-95/100: ‘Delivers gorgeous aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice, with hints of tobacco and spice. Full-bodied, offering a lovely texture and refinement. Very long and beautiful, with tangy acidity and lively fruit. A rich, yet very balanced, Calon. This is almost all Cabernet Sauvignon instead of the normal blend with 40 percent merlot. The chateau is now using 100 percent new wood. Like the changes.’ Parker 92-94+/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Made in a very different style for this estate, the 2009 is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest I have ever seen here), 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. It is a big, rich, tannic, structured wine offering a sweet kiss of creme de cassis, loamy soil, and spice box. Remarkably, despite the use of 100% new oak because of 2009's power and intensity, there is not a hint of wood in either the aromatic or flavor profile. Never that showy from cask, this traditionally made St.-Estephe should be forgotten for 10-15 years, and drunk over the following 40-50 years. My rating is very conservative, and I expect it to rise considerably as this wine comes out of its infancy.’
How Many: 1049.00 each case

Full-bodied and unctuously textured, with an ethereal personality, tons of nuances, and a burgeoning complexity, it is an enormously well-endowed, fresh, perfectly balanced tour de force in winemaking. It should drink well for 50-60 years.’ NOTE: THIS IS A CASE OF 6 BOTTLES.

Drink 2014-24.’ Jancis Robinson 17/20: ‘Very dark and concentrated. Super-ripe. Thick and sweet. Very glamorous and heady. Not a trace of St-Estèphe austerity. Extraordinary indeed! Drink 2018-2032.’

Wine Spectator 91-94/100: ‘Blueberry and licorice aromas follow through to a full body, with a dense and powerful palate and a long, flavorful, velvet-textured finish. Very well done. From the owner of Leoville-Poyferre.’ Parker 90-92/100 - OUTSTANDING - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE: ‘The 2009 is the finest wine I have tasted from this vineyard, with its picture-postcard chateau sandwiched between Cos d’Estournel and Montrose. It displays an opulent nose of black and blue fruits intermixed with licorice, crushed rocks, and flowers. Fat, plush, and fleshy, with terrific fruit purity and a long, layered finish, this sleeper of the vintage can be enjoyed over the next 15+ years.’ DICK’S PICKS.

New entry on 6/5 Parker 91-93/100 - OUTSTANDING - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE: ‘Perhaps the finest Lafon Rochet ever made, the purity, freshness, and sweet, rich, blueberry and boysenberry fruit and hint of pen ink that are found in this wine are impressive. Massive in the mouth, with freshness, delineation, and sweet tannin, it is a major sleeper of the vintage that should last for 25+ years .’ Decanter 17.5/20 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Black red, colour sticks to the glass, big smoky Cabernet cassis nose, excellent natural concentration, intense yet lifted fruit, lots of succulence and lots of grip, a really well-expressed, well-made wine with a very good future. Drink 2015-30.’ Tanzer 91-94/100: ‘Spicy red cherry, cedar, tar, ash and incense on the nose, complicated by a hint of coffee reduction. Then more restrained and refined in the mouth, with terrific depth and freshness to the smoky blackberry, dark plum and mineral flavors. Sound acids give this fleshy wine admirable clarity and cut on the long, youthfully tannic finish. This very pure, dense wine appears to be one of the most accomplished Lafon-Rochet wines in recent memory.’

New entry on 6/22 Wine Spectator 97-100/100: ‘Big and structured, delivering wild aromas of Indian spices, crushed berry, sweet tobacco and coffee. Full-bodied, with loads of velvety, chewy tannins and a long spicy finish. The chateau says this is like the 1990, but I think it could be even better. It’s certainly better made.’ Parker 97-100/100 - WINE OF THE VINTAGE: ‘This super-concentrated claret possesses a style reminiscent of the sumptuous 1990 combined with the structure of the 1989. The flavor profile bursts with black currant, blackberry, and boysenberry fruit intertwined with hints of spring flowers and crushed rocks. The finish is endless. Huge body, sweet tannin, and wonderful freshness make for one of the all-time great wines ever produced at Montrose. I hope to be drinking this wine with great pleasure before the Man comes for me. Kudos to Jean-Bernard Delmas.’

s0412-170. 09 LES PAGODES DE CHATEAU COS D’ESTOURNEL, SAINT ESTEPHE case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/5 Parker 91-94/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘The second wine, 2009 Les Pagodes de Cos, is better than most Cos d’Estournel vintages produced in the 1950s, 1060s, and 1970s. It is a full-bodied, opulently concentrated wine of amazing richness, density, and intensity. As with the grand vin, this possess this vintage’s classic characteristics of enormous power, massive fruit, and extraordinary freshness and precision–largely unprecedented, particularly for Cabernet-based wines in the Medoc.’

New entry on 6/14 Wine Spectator 90-93/100: ‘Deep aromas of crushed blackberries and fresh herbs. Full-bodied, with round and soft tannins and a polished texture on the finish. Rich and structured. Could be best ever from here.’ Parker 90-92/100 - OUTSTANDING - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE: ‘Like many of the top 2009s, Phelan-Segur is a huge, full-bodied effort with massive fruit as well as good freshness, precision, and elegance. This is all rather paradoxical given previous great vintages that either lean toward cooler vintage characteristics or hot ones. This 2009 possesses both styles. It exhibits lots of mulberry, boysenberry, and crushed, jammy black fruits, abundant tannin, an opulent mouthfeel, and enough structure to evolve for two decades or more.’

Parker 90-93/100 - OUTSTANDING - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE: ‘This estate has produced their finest wines to date under the guidance of Jean-Bernard Delmas (who made very Haut-Brion between 1961 and 2003). Delmas, who was coaxed out of retirement to apply his enviable talents in St.-Estephe, is a master at attaining sweet tannins, which is always a challenge in this northern appellation. The 2009 boasts a beautiful bouquet of boysenberries, spring flowers, black currants, and a hint of ink, a full-bodied, supple, opulent mouthfeel, and a long finish. It should drink nicely for 10-15 years.’ DICK’S PICKS.

It exhibits an extraordinary perfume of creme de cassis, violets, graphite, and subtle wood. The full-bodied, intense, voluptuously textured, pure, seductive wine seems more open-knit and opulent than the more structured Carruades de Lafite. New entry on 6/16 Parker 97-100/100 - WINE OF THE VINTAGE: ‘A possibly perfect 2009 of extraordinary intensity and purity. It is outrageously concentrated, with silky tannin (the sweetest I have ever tasted in a Pontet-Canet) and copious notes of graphite, cassis, licorice, and subtle smoke and forest floor. Full-bodied and unctuously textured with striking purity and definition, it is a wine of colossal weight as well as elegance. This brilliant Pauillac requires a decade of cellaring despite its voluptuous texture. It should evolve for 50-75 years.’

New entry on 6/14 Parker 91-93/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘The 2009 is the finest second wine Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has made. Flavorful and full-bodied with loads of texture and opulence, it offers up aromas of forest floor and black fruits. The fruit hits the palate with a richness, and the wine possesses sweet, velvety tannins, stunning purity, and a layered mouthfeel that builds incrementally, combining power, concentration, density, and elegance. Structured and tannic, but sweet fruit behind.’ Parker 92-95/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Certainly the most powerful Branaire ever made, and its 70% Cabernet Sauvignon showcases what a great vintage 2009 is for Cabernet Sauvignon. Raspberry, boysenberry, crushed rock, graphite, and floral notes, and an opaque, broad, dense, substantial, impressively structured wine without any hardness. It requires 4-5 years of cellaring, and should last four decades or more.’ Tanzer 93-96/100.

s0412-200. 09 CLOS DU MARQUIS, SAINT JULIEN case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/16 Parker 90-93/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Clos du Marquis is being positioned by Jean-Hubert Delon as a separate single vineyard wine rather than Leoville Las Cases’ second wine. The logic is simple. It has come from the same vineyard for over twenty years, and is not a true second wine in the sense that it is not made from Las Cases’ discarded cuvees. The 2009 exhibits sweet notes of creme de cassis, great purity, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and terrific texture as well as length. It should evolve for 20-25 years.’
How Many: 699.00 each case

s0412-201. 09 CHATEAU DUCRU BEAUCAILLOU, 2ME GRAND CRU, SAINT JULIEN case of 12 bottles

This sneaks up on you at the end. Structured and very, very powerful. The blockbuster tannins are sweet and fruit-coated. This is a classic, powerful style of Ducru. May be best yet. Wow.’ Parker 96-98/100 - WINE OF THE VINTAGE: ‘This compelling effort is one of the all-time great Ducru Beaucaillous. This unctuously textured 2009 reveals layers and layers of blue, red, and black fruits, and hints of licorice and spice box. Despite its substantial, massive size, it retains an elegant style, but will need 3-5 years of cellaring. It should last for 40+ years.’

Loaded with notes of Christmas fruitcake intermixed with red and black currant, licorice, spice box, and blackberries, this wine is atypically full-bodied with a viscous texture, and loads of tannin, extract, and richness. Deep and layered, it will offer thrilling sipping over the next 25+ years.’

s0412-205. 09 CHATEAU GRUAUD LAROSE, 2ME GRAND CRU, SAINT JULIEN case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/8 Wine Spectator 94-97/100: ‘Beautiful aromas of currant, black licorice and blueberry follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a long, juicy finish. Big wine. Could be better than the classic 2000.’ Parker 92-94+/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘This is the finest Gruaud Larose since the 1990. It exhibits a big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, new saddle leather, spice box, and boysenberries. Made in a rich, broad, savory, juicy style with lots of succulence, this wine is loaded with concentration and extract. The tannins are largely concealed by the remarkable intensity of fruit and density. It should be drinkable in 7-8 years, and last for 30-40.’

Parker 88-90/100 - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE: ‘The finest wine I have ever tasted from Lalande Borie, the 2009 displays lots of purity along with a boatload of black currant, raspberry, and black cherry fruit, no evidence of wood, broad, rich, deep flavors, and a velvety texture. It should drink well for a decade or more.’
How Many: 299.00 each case

s0412-208. 09 CHATEAU LEOVILLE BARTON, 2ME GRAND CRU, SAINT JULIEN case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/18 Wine Spectator 92-95/100: ‘Licorice, berry, grape and currant on the nose turns to crushed fruit. Full-bodied, with very fine tannins, pretty fruit, currant and mineral. A balanced and pretty wine. Excellent.’ Parker 93-95+/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘This behemoth possesses massive extraction, huge density, extreme tannins, and a nearly endless finish. Everything is there, but the highly extracted style and off the chart tannins ensures that no one over the age of forty will ever see this wine hit full maturity. Nevertheless, there is a lot to admire, and it’s good to taste a wine that will not be ready to drink for 30+ years. No compromise!’ Decanter 19/20 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Dense purple red, finely concentrated blackcurrant Cabernet nose with many layers of complexity, shows freshness above the controlled intensity of pure vineyard fruit, still shut in but a very great expression to come. Drink 2017-40.’ Wine Enthusiast 96-98/100: ‘Ripe, sweet but also intensely juicy; a delicious wine, full of sweetness and rich complexity. The new wood element is there, neatly bringing out the beauty of the fruit.’ DICK’S PICKS. SORRY! FIRST TRANCHE SOLD OUT. STAY TUNED.

I have never tasted such a flashy sample. I am blown away by this.’ Parker 96-100/100 - WINE OF THE VINTAGE: ‘This 2009 boasts monumental concentration and great clarity and purity of creme de cassis, black cherry, spice box, graphite, and wet rock characteristics. Extremely full-bodied with a boatload of sweet tannin nearly concealed by the wine’s power, glycerin, and awesome fruit concentration, this intense effort never tastes heavy or tiring. Hints of vanilla follow through to a full body, with layers of ripe fruit and fine, fruit-coated tannins. I love the ripe and pretty fruit to this. Very fruit-forward. The chateau cut back on the new wood, and went for a fruitier style. I like that.’ Parker 92-95/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Their greatest since the 1986, the wine reveals extraordinary density, power, and richness as well as explosive fruit, and terrific acidity, intensity, and power. Wonderful texture.’ Parker 94-96/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘The finest wine I have tasted from this estate in my 30+ year career, the 2009 from this hallowed vineyard reveals an extraordinary, intense, pure, quintessential Domaine de Chevalier style, including silky tannin, dense plum, black currant, black cherry, floral, and graphite notes, terrific acidity, sweet tannin, and a full-bodied mouthfeel with no weight, but admirable precision and freshness. This is really excellent.’ Parker 91-93/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘The finest I have ever tasted, this is an awesome De Fieuzal, with plenty of lead pencil shavings intermixed with blueberry, black raspberry, and sweet cherries. A touch of smoke also emerges from this opaque purple-colored wine. Full-bodied, with loads of glycerin, one can see the more generous, viscous nature of this vintage well displayed, but also a terrific freshness and vibrancy. It should turn out to be a superb effort that drinks well for up to 30 years.’ DICK’S PICKS.

s0412-277. 09 CHATEAU HAUT BAILLY, GRAND CRU, PESSAC-LEOGNAN case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/18 Wine Spectator 95-98/100: ‘Lovely sweet berry and plum aromas, with hints of sandalwood and cedar. Full-bodied, with milk chocolate, berry and vanilla bean character. Thick and dense tannins, but balanced and very pretty. Sneaks up on you. Really powerful in tannins.’ Parker 96-98+/100 - WINE OF THE VINTAGE: ‘The greatest Haut-Bailly ever made? Tiny yields have resulted in the most concentrated Haut-Bailly I have ever tasted. It exhibits a precise, nuanced nose of mulberries, black cherries, black currants, graphite, and a singular floral component. A wine of profound intensity and full-bodied power, yet stunningly elegant, and never heavy or massive, it build incrementally on the palate, and the finish lasts over 45 seconds. Remarkably, there is not a hard edge to be found in this beauty. The wine’s extraordinary freshness, elegance, and precision are nearly surreal. This tour de force should age brilliantly for 40+ years.’ DICK’S PICKS.

The 2009 reveals a big, exuberant nose of charcoal, black currants, sweet cherries, and graphite. s0412-279. 09 CHATEAU HAUT BRION, 1ER GRAND CRU, PESSAC-LEOGNAN case of 12 bottles
New entry on 7/2 Parker 98-100/100: ‘This is a kind of wine to send chills even up my spine, and I have been tasting here for nearly 30 years. An extraordinary nose of plum, blueberry, raspberry, crushed rock, and that intriguing floral as well as unsmoked cigar tobacco note (a classic sign of this terroir) is followed by a wine of creamy unctuosity reminiscent of the 1989, but there is a freshness, vibrancy and precision that is historic and possibly unprecedented. This is the quintessential expression of one of the greatest wine terroirs of the world. This wine will evolve as well as the 1959 has (which is still a perfect wine today), so we’re realistically talking 50-75 years when stored in a cool cellar.’

s0412-280. 09 CHATEAU LARRIVET HAUT BRION, PESSAC-LEOGNAN case of 12 bottles
Parker 91-93/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Juicy red currant with subtle smoked herbs, truffle, and spice box jump from the glass of this dense wine. Possessing silky tannins, seductive, ripe fruit with an opulent texture and no hard edges, but serious tannin lurking behind the wealth of fruit and glycerin, this is a classic Pessac-Leognan that can be drunk young or cellared for 20-25 years.’

s0412-281. 09 CHATEAU LATOUR MARTILLAC, GRAND CRU, PESSAC-LEOGNAN case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/5 Wine Spectator 90-93/100: ‘Very attractive blackberry, licorice and hints of toasted oak. Full-bodied, with soft and silky tannins and a milk chocolate and berry aftertaste.’ Parker 90-92/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘The best wine I have ever tasted frm this estate, the oak seems to have been subdued, or maybe it is just that the fruit level is kicked up so high that the oak is not noticeable. This is certainly characteristic of 2009. With hints of graphite, cigar box, creme de cassis, and subtle barbecue smoke, the wine is loaded, rich, opulent, and a beautiful model of a wine that makes a few concessions to the modern style of Bordeaux but retains its Graves personality totally intact. It should drink well for 20-25 years.’ Decanter 17.5/20: ‘Black red, well-concentrated cassis fruit with good florality, fine earthy/leafy/fleshy palate, with good length, presence and grip, has both vigour and class. Drink 2016-28.’ DICK’S PICKS.

New entry on 6/17 Wine Spectator 88-91/100: ‘A silky red, with plum and mineral character that follows through with fine tannins. Refined and pretty.’ Tanzer 88-91/100: ‘Lovely nose redolent of blueberry, tamarind and cedar. Enters juicy and clean, displaying sweet yet vibrant plum and blueberry flavors nicely lifted by a strong mineral undercurrent. This delicious, smooth, long wine may lack a bit of nuance but should provide immediate drinking enjoyment upon its release. I find this year's wines from La Louviere (both white and red) to be their most successful and concentrated in years.’ La Louviere is always one of the best of the non-classified Graves rouges (there are only 13 Grands Crus). New entry on 6/2 Jancis Robinson 17/5/20. Tanzer 88-91/100: ‘Showy aromas of superripe cassis, black plum, dried herbs, wet underbrush and earth. Then big and minerally on the palate, but with more restraint than the nose suggests to its juicy blackcurrant, ripe black cherry, spice and mineral flavors. Finishes very long and finely tannic, with hints of smoke and building complexity. This is the second very successful wine in a row from Olivier, if in a very ripe and rather sweet style.’

s0412-290. 09 CHATEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE, GRAND CRU, PESSAC-LEOGNAN case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/18 Wine Spectator 95-98/100: ‘Blackberry and lightly toasted oak with coffee and cedar. Full-bodied and a very, very powerful structure. Blockbuster. Massive and dense, yet remains agile. A triumph.’ Parker 96-98/100 - WINE OF THE VINTAGE: ‘The 2009 possibly eclipses any previous performance. An opaque purple color is followed by an explosive nose of graphite, black currants, licorice, incense, and a hint of black tea. The wine hits the palate with extraordinary density, unctuosity, and richness, yet it never comes across as heavy or overbearing. Deep and full-bodied with sensational concentration as well as remarkable purity and precision, this brilliant wine possesses the high, but sweet tannins that are a hallmark of the vintage, and exceptional delicacy allied to massive power and richness...a rare combination indeed. This prodigious effort should drink well for 30-40 years. Bravo!’

Parker 87-89/100: ‘A great bargain in any vintage, in 2009 this may be the best wine they have ever produced. It is a terrific sleeper of the vintage. Already seductive and lush, it displays oodles of subtle barbecue smoke, interspersed with black cherry and black currant fruit as well as silky tannins. In a larger-scaled, lusher style than usual, this is a beauty. Drink it over the next 6-8 years.’

s0412-293. 09 CLOS FLORIDENE, GRAVES case of 12 bottles
Wine Spectator 88-91/100: ‘Offers blueberry, violet and mineral on the nose. Fine tannins and a clean, silky finish. This has lots of finesse.’ Tanzer 88-91/100: ‘Vibrant aromas of raspberry, dark plum and spicy oak. On the palate, the sweet blackcurrant and dark plum flavors show an almost liqueur-like creaminess, but a peppery element and good minerality lend grip. The finish features dusty tannins, a pretty violet note and a calcaire persistence. This atypically fat Clos Floridene will probably be at its best during its first ten years of life. About 40% of the merlot used for this wine is grown on limestone, as is half of the cabernet sauvignon (the other half is on gravel), which Dubourdieu notes is rare in this area.’ DICK’S PICKS.

It has a big, powerful nose of raspberry confiture intermixed with crushed rock, licorice, and a very subtle hint of wood. A wine of enormous density, power, full-bodied richness and viscosity, it has good vibrancy and a boatload of tannin, but it is all seamlessly integrated in this colossal effort. New entry on 6/2 Wine Spectator 92-95/100: ‘Blackberry, toasty oak, coffee bean and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and very chewy, with masses of tannins that are a little aggressive. But should come around nicely. Very chewy. Ultraconcentrated.’ Parker 90-93/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Fresh, with bright acids and notes of graphite, blueberries, black currants, smoke, and charcoal, this full-bodied, intense, textured, rich 2009 should drink well for 15+ years.’

s0412-327. 09 CHATEAU FOMBRAUGE, GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION case of 12 bottles
Parker 91-93/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘The fruit for the uber-concentrated 2009 was harvested between October 6 and 22, very late in 2009, thus the super ripeness, concentration, and density. Notes of truffles, graphite, blackberries, and blueberries jump from the glass of this full-bodied, unctuously textured, thick, juicy St.-Emilion. The abundant tannin is largely concealed by the extravagant fruit and richness. It should drink well in 3-4 years, and last for 15-20.’ DICK’S PICKS.

s0412-329. 09 CHATEAU FONROQUE, GRAND CRU CLASSE, SAINT EMILION case of 12 bottles
Parker 91-93/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘I agree with Alain Moueix that this is the greatest Fonroque he has ever made. From one of the few bio-dynamically farmed vineyards in St.-Emilion, this 2009 exhibits a big, crisp, precise nose of forest floor, black and red fruits, crushed rocks, and earth. Dense, muscular, and masculine, this rich, full-bodied, deep, impressively endowed effort will benefit from 5-7 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 25+.’

The flavors are concentrated, pure, dense, thick, and unctuous with plenty of tannin lurking under the surface. However, the tannin is well-concealed by the wine’s enormous fruit, glycerin, and density. It should evolve for 15 or more years.’

New entry on 6/24 Parker 91-94/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘A big wine, the 2009 was somewhat closed the day I tasted it, but it revealed lots of minerality, blackberry, graphite, and subtle smoke notes. Meaty, rich and full-bodied, with noticeable tannins, this needs time to settle down, but everything is there to an evolution of 10-15+ years.’ DICK’S PICKS.

The 2009 reveals a generous sweet spot in the middle along with lots of glycerin, and a wonderful round opulence. Look for the 2009 to age easily for two decades.’ DICK’S PICKS. SORRY! s0412-345. 09 CHATEAU LUSSEAU, GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION case of 12 bottles
Parker 90-92/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Not much wine is made from Mr. Lusseau’s five-acre vineyard. He is also the ‘regisseur’ of all Gerard Perse’s properties, so there is no doubt he knows how to turn out exceptionally concentrated, rich, flavorful, and soulful wines. An opulent in-you-face style of St.-Emilion, with chewy, meaty flavors, and plenty of floral notes intermixed with blackberry, licorice, smoke, and fruit, this totally seamless, opulent, fleshy wine is a total hedonistic turn-on that should drink well for 10-15 years.’

s0412-346. 09 CHATEAU MAGDELAINE, 1ER GRAND CRU CLASSE, SAINT EMILION case of 12 bottles
Parker 92-94+/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘A more massive style than usual from this property, the 2009 exhibits a classic kirsch liqueur note, but the color is more saturated, the tactile impression more full, meaty, and rich, and the wine is more loaded and dense. Filled with elegance as well as power, this beauty should drink handsomely for 25+ years.’
How Many: 1229.00 each case

s0412-347. 09 CHATEAU MAGREZ FOMBRAUGE, GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION case of 12 bottles
Wine Spectator 93-96/100: ‘A blockbuster, with loads of concentrated fruit and coffee bean and toasty oak on the nose. Full-bodied, with velvety, chewy tannins and a long finish. Big and powerful.’ Parker 92-95+/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘The 2009 (100% Merlot from the best parcel of the Fombrauge vineyard) possesses a bouquet of creosote, truffles, graphite, smoke, blueberries, and assorted black fruits. It is an extreme, super-extracted, full-bodied, powerful, concentrated St.-Emilion boasting massive levels of extract, tannin, and glycerin. It needs 8-10 years of cellaring, and should last for 25-30 years. The 2000 tasted recently was showing fabulously well, giving all indications of being a 30-year wine.’

s0412-350. 09 CHATEAU MONBOUSQUET, GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION case of 12 bottles
Parker 92-94/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘What Gerard Perse has done with this property os remarkable. Absolutely no new oak is showing in the 2009, which is unusual for this wine, but that tells you how concentrated and textured the fruit is in this vintage. With plenty of exotic black fruits, jammy red fruits, some truffle, roasted herbs, and incense, the wine is full-bodied, luscious, exuberant, and opulent. It will be impossible to resist in its youth. This wine should drink well for 10-15 more years.’

New entry on 6/24 Wine Spectator 95-98/100: ‘Full-bodied, with velvety and polished tannins and fabulous fruit. Love the texture and depth of fruit to this wine. So long too.’ Parker 95-98/100 - WINE OF THE VINTAGE: ‘The wine is painfully rich, but at the same time retains an extraordinary elegance and freshness. A full-bodied wine with plenty of raspberries, red and black currants, and a cool minerality, the wine is full-bodied, powerful, yet at the same time possesses sweet tannins, a very layered mouthfeel, and dazzling purity and length. It will need 5-7 years of cellaring and will drink well for three decades.’

New entry on 6/24 Parker 96-100/100 - WINE OF THE VINTAGE: ‘A powerful, full-bodied, remarkably intense wine, it displays enormous creme de cassis and boysenberry fruit with some cherries, spice box, and crushed rock in the background. It is intense, with loads of minerality, huge extraction, massive power, yet agin, the vintage character seems to have given it a freshness and vibrancy despite the wine’s obvious viscosity. The minimum patience required is at least a decade, as this is another 40-year wine from Gerard Perse.’

Wine Spectator 89-92/100: ‘Intense aromas of tar and concentrated fruit, with plum and blackberry skin. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a pretty finish.’ De Pressac was the first in Bordeaux to plant malbec; it’s still called ‘noir de pressac’ in the region. Today it makes up just 1% of this Chateau’s vineyard though. And there’s 2% carmenere.

s0412-358. 09 CHATEAU QUINAULT L’ENCLOS, GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION case of 12 bottles
New entry on 6/16 Parker 90-92/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Now owned by the proprietors of Cheval Blanc, the 2009 exhibits notes of licorice, incense, raspberry, and black cherries, elegant, stylish flavors, and no hint of oak. This is a beautifully made, pure, deep wine that continues to confirm what Dr. Alain Raynaud suspected when he bought this property in 1997. The naysayers said this terroir was suspect, but that has been proven wrong by the wines that have been produced. This 2009 should drink well for 10-20 years.’ We found Raynaud’s Quinaults excellent wines and wine values. The Cheval Blanc team’s may prove even better. DICK’S PICKS.

s0412-362. 09 CHATEAU SANSONNET, GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION case of 12 bottles
Parker 90-92/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘Significant hail damage in May, 2009, led to Sansonnet’s incredibly low yields of 9 hectoliters her hectare. The 2009 reveals copious aromas of sweet, chalky, blackberry and black cherry fruit, deep, concentrated flavors, and sweet tannin. It is an amazing effort, but because of the minuscule yields, little will be available in the marketplace. The finest potential of all the offerings I have ever tasted from this estate.’ DICK’S PICKS.

New entry on 6/8 Parker 91-93/100 - OUTSTANDING: ‘This is certainly one of the top two or three wines I have ever tasted from this estate. With notes of blueberry, black raspberry, cherry, and currants, the wine displays some graphite, charcoal, and incense in a full-bodied, rich, silky, even voluptuous style, with oodles of fruit, concentration, and power, but wonderful freshness, which is again the paradoxical aspect of this vintage–massive concentration, but impressive freshness and elegance.’

The 2009 is the finest wine I have ever tasted from this property. It reveals terrific fruit intensity, along with a full-bodied unctuosity, great purity, sweet tannins, and a heady, long finish. The alcohol level must be more than 14% given the glycerin content and the wine’s thickness. It should drink well for 15+ years.’ NOTE: THIS IS A CASE OF 6 BOTTLES.

New entry on 6/22 Parker 97-100/100 - WINE OF THE VINTAGE: ‘The greatest Clinet since the incredible duo produced in 1989 and 1990, th e2009 was off the charts in terms of quality and potential. Deep, richly fruity, and medium to full-bodied, with more substance and generosity than most vintages possess, the tannins are sweet and the finish is impressive as well as long. This wine, which is enormously endowed, very rich, and full-bodied, has a chance to be the best Gazin ever made. However, patience will be a virtue, as the wine will certainly need 5-8 years of cellaring.’

Parker 87-89/100 - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE: ‘My introduction to this wine was the excellent 1982, and the 2009 is probably the finest Pitray yet made. Copious aromas of crushed rocks, red and black currants, and a hint of kirsch. Loaded with fruit with impressive glycerin and lushness, it offers a lot of flavor for its price point.’ Our introduction to Chateau Pitray was the 1966 vintage. We’re sure ready to line up for this one at under $10 a bottle. DICK’S PICKS.

The wine is deep, full, and promising, but also painfully backward and ferocious because it was still in malolactic. Expect future tasting notes to reveal more body and depth.’

s0412-463. 09 CHATEAU BOLAIRE, BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR case of 12 bottles
Parker 88-90+/100 - SLEEPER OF THE VINTAGE:: ‘This wine seems built to evolve for up to a decade or more. Of 40% Merlot, a whopping 35% Petit Verdot, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon that all tip the scales at 14% natural alcohol, the result is a wine with loads of structure that seems more backward than many of its peers, especially at this price point, but displays an impressive concentration of black currant and black cherry fruit with some licorice and spicy oak. This is a seriously endowed wine that needs to shed some tannin, but it is all there. Give it a year or so of bottle age and drink it over the following decade.’ DICK’S PICKS. SORRY! Tiny yields of 31 hectoliters per hectare as well as super attention to detail in both the vineyard and winemaking has resulted in a wine that is stunning, with notes of chocolate, espresso roast, pain grille, blackberries, and cherries. Dense, sweet and lush, with a silky mouth feel to the rich, ripe black fruit and mocha flavors. Finishes long and pure, with well above average intensity and depth for a wine simply labelled Bordeaux This is much riper and ultimately much better than last year's version. s0412-483. 09 CHATEAU CLIMENS, 1ER GRAND CRU, BARSAC case of 12 half bottles
New entry on 6/22 Parker 96-98/100: ‘Tasting through 13 separate lots, the core components of a great Climens appear to be in place. Playing particular attention to the lots that constitute a large percentage of the blend, the common themes are ones of great purity, persistency and precision. The aromatics display pure honey, minerals, occasionally a faint scent of spearmint and white peach, most with spellbinding precision. On the palate, Berenice Lurton has some stupendous lots at her disposal, with ample botrytis, ethereal definition, one or two more powerful, quite spicy lots and others that will undoubtedly lend the blend an acidic cut. It will be a joy to taste this after bottling.’ Wine Enthusiast 97-99/100: ‘Tasting from several barrels, the wine is so rich, with an almost perfect balance of acidity and ripeness, allied to a complete purity of honeyed botrytis. However the final wine turns out, it will be magnificent.’

Finishes with lots of fruit and spicy nutmeg character.’ When I started in the wine business 46 years ago, this Chateau, classified 2me Grand Cru in 1855, was shuttered, its vineyards unkempt. It’s had a startling revival since then and has given us some amazing wines. This looks to be its best in its new era. DICK’S PICKS.

s0412-515. 09 CHATEAU NAIRAC, 2ME GRAND CRU, SAUTERNES case of 12 bottles
Wine Spectator 92-95/100; Parker 93-95/100: ‘A well defined nose with apple-blossom, lime leaf, apricot and orange peel. Opens nicely the longer it remains in the glass. The palate is well balanced, very good weight on the entry with a citric thread of acidity interwoven through the pure honeyed fruit with a hint of ginger on the aftertaste. Supremely well crafted and succinct.’ Tanzer 92-95/100: ‘Racy aromas of pear, apple, peach and marzipan, with enticing floral lift and a hint of botrytis in the background. Suave and fine-grained, this Barsac displays very intense and sweet flavors of apple jelly, ripe pear and pineapple, yet remains wonderfully light on its feet for such an opulent wine. Subtle, restrained and impeccably balanced wine, offering sneaky concentration and very good finishing grip. A pretty note of apple cider lingers long. This is yet another great Nairac in the making; the wines from this estate have been magnificent in recent years, and it's hard to think of a better sweet wine for the money. If you must buy just a single Sauternes in '09, this might be the one.’

s0412-516. 09 CHATEAU PARTARRIEU, SAUTERNES case of 12 bottles
Parker 90-92/100: ‘Nascent and ‘in fieri’ on the nose, but the palate is already showing great freshness and acidity, crisp honey and lemon curd, precise and animated towards the finish. The harmony and focus is already tangible. This is a Sauternes that may surprise a few people after bottling.’ Not me. And if you’ll stop by VC and pick up a half bottle of 2006, you’ll understand why. DICK’S PICKS.

Parker 94-96/100: ‘Unfurls seductively with subtle, perfumed aromas of lime leaf, white peach, fresh apricot and touches of white flowers, very pretty and well defined. The palate is beautifully balanced, so pure and succinct with wonderful precision towards the vibrant, white peach and apricot finish. s0412-520. 09 CHATEAU RAYMOND LAFON, SAUTERNES case of 12 bottles
Jancis Robinson 19/20: ‘Very deep golden, with great tension and excitement and some green streaks, with layers of botrytis over them. Full and deep with intense botrytis. Great stuff! Unspittable, dried apricots (though so much richer than a Tokaji) and great acidity. Drink 2017-2032.’ Decanter 18.5/20: ‘Glorious wine, as great as any first growth, with the same intensity and immediate perception of the vintage quality and character. For the owner, and I share his enthusiasm, the best ever.’ Tanzer 92-95/100: ‘Very intense aromas of orange blossom, lemon curd and tangerine zest are complicated by a pretty floral nuance and show strong, clean, pure botrytis character. Enters dense, sweet and honeyed, with noteworthy depth and precision to its flavors of fresh citrus fruit, apricot and saffron. Though quite sweet, the wine's sound acidity gives it impressive clarity, and the smooth, viscous finish goes on for minutes. This extremely successful Raymond-Lafon is one of the stars of the vintage.’ DICK’S PICKS.

The palate is very well balanced, beautifully defined with real minerality showing through the viscous, botrytized fruit. Great tension here, effortlessly counterbalancing the richness to perfection.’ Wine Enthusiast 95-97/100: ‘Very spicy, packed with fresh ginger, this is a delicious wine, tasting fresh but with an additional burst of supreme ripeness.’ DICK’S PICKS.

The palate is very well balanced with superb acidity, real tension, steely with great precision with notes of apricot, white peach and honey on the beautifully defined finish. Probably the best Rieussec since the astounding 2001.’ Wine Enthusiast 96-98/100: ‘Concentrated and dense, this is a wine that is in full accord with the power of 2009. There is richness, but there is also great elegance. This structure of richness and sweetness includes a final bit of honey.’

Parker 95-97/100: ‘A well defined nose: grapefruit, nectarine, honey and lime, much more primal than some of the other 2009s. The palate is very well balanced with excellent acidity: apricot, honeysuckle, a touch of orange zest and then vibrant white peach bursting across the finish with lime flower and lemongrass on the aftertaste. Wonderful persistency, power and freshness. With question, the 2009 is the best Sigalas-Rabaud that I have tasted and this nectar comes highly recommended.’ DICK’S PICKS.

Parker 97-99/100: ‘One of the outstanding successes of the 2009 vintage, this may surpass the superlative 2007. It has a more understated nose at the moment, but is very well defined with honey, white peach, orange peel and crushed stones. The palate has a viscous entry, is very well balanced, very powerful with great depth and effervescent minerality. Layers of botrytis layered across the mellifluous finish that is beautifully defined and sensuous. Fabulous.’

Parker 94-96/100: ‘Very primal on the nose with grapefruit, nectarine and apricot aromas. The palate is very well balanced, just a little oaky at the moment but with a very fine thread of acidity. Touches of fresh apricot, a hint of nougat, lime zest and white peach. Well balanced, linear at the front palate but voluminous and expanding across the mouth in every direction on the viscous, mineral-rich finish. There is so much potential here. Superb.’ Wine Enthusiast 96-98/100: ‘A powerful, complex wine, its layers of sweetness mixed with a total dryness from botrytis. The wine is impressively rich, considerably inspired by dried fruits and spice. Certain for aging over decades.’ Decanter 19/20 - EXCELLENT: ‘My favourite of this group because it adds to the glorious constitution of the vintage a very special element of finesse and subtlety, sublime aftertaste.’
