INTRODUCTION

ORGANIC WINES

Here is a presentation of over 200 organic wines that are either in stock or available to us on a weekly basis. It is just the tip of the iceberg, really. Most of the wineries and brands included have more wines available from other vintages, grape varieties, and/or origins. There are most certainly additional brands that encompass organic wines. As we learn of these, we will add them to the list. We solicit both consumer and trade input.

INTRODUCTION

Biodynamic. Wine Enthusiast 92: ‘This is the white equivalent to Bonny Doon’s successful red Rhone blend, Cigare Volant. A blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Marsanne, it shows Randal Grahm’s touch in the way the richness has balance and complexity, going well beyond well-ripened peach, melon and spicy apricot fruit. There’s a stony minerality, a tangy taste of stone, that makes this wine distinctive and compelling.’

Biodynamic. Wine & Spirits 93: ‘Fine-boned and elegant, this plum-scented pinot is supported by sumptuous oak and a dusting of fine-grained earth. The ripe cherry flavor concentration feels as generous as it is poised, the finish graceful and lifted.’
How Many: 49.99 each

ORG-127. 05 DOMAINE DROUHIN LAURENE OREGON PINOT NOIR
Biodynamic. Wine Enthusiast 92: ‘It requires some patience at first, because it is quite tight, almost inscrutable. With many hours of breathing it fleshes out and opens up, revealing a wine with interesting nuances of cured meat, mushroom and light earth. The fruit is a notch more concentrated and full than the regular Drouhin Pinot, but retains a sense of tart berry and light cherry rather than being sweet or jammy. This absolutely must be decanted well in advance.’
How Many: 64.95 each

Wine Enthusiast 96 - CELLAR SELECTION: ‘A fantastic Cabernet that stuns now for authenticity and power, and should develop for many years. The wine shows classic Oakville elegance and precision. Serve this with grilled quail.’

Wine Enthusiast 96 - CELLAR SELECTION: ‘Made from 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, with no merlot or Cabernet Franc for the first time, the ‘05 Rubicon tastes bigger and more impenetrable than any previous vintage. It’s thick and heavy at this time, with furry tannins and undeniably ripe flavors of blackberries, black currants, cherries, violets, chocolate and cedar, and a tang of melted minerals. Desperately needs time in the cellar. Nowhere near ready for at least four years, and that may be conservative. Tasted three times, and better each time, a seriously good sign, and potentially a perfect wine.’

ORG-208. 02 SOKOL BLOSSER DUNDEE HILLS PINOT NOIR
Decanter - Best American Red Wine of the Month: ‘From its estate vineyards, Sokol Blosser has turned out an outstanding example of Pinot Noir from the Dundee Hills in Willamette Valley. This 2002 is made from relatively young vineyards, and it was the first vintage at the winery to be organically grown. The wine was aged in small oak (59% new) for 16 months and was aged in bottle for a year prior to being released. Though youthful and closed-in, this lovely wine gradually reveals black cherry and earthy aromas with a hint of truffle and spice. Silky, delicate and supple, it has similar flavours backed by light tannin and light oak. The winemaker suggests it will age 10-15 years. It definitely needs 3-4 to evolve, and could in fact be reaching its peak in a decade.’
