WT102908-03. 07 ADLER FELS RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY GEWURZTRAMINER - (U.S.) Exotic barbershop tones of bergamot and bay. Sweet orange oil too./ Some residual sweetness, and smoothness further enhanced by glycerol. The gewurz bitter foil too. Fine effort. This has long been an Adler Fels forte. 16.8.

A complete Napa pinot./ Great acidity too. As well as pinot flow. And good power. Finishes long and delectable. 16.7.

WT102908-07. 06 VARNER FOXGLOVE PASO ROBLES CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S.) Deep and reductive. As if the winemaker took this cool, reductive route to counter the ripeness of Paso cabernet. Good oak character too, especially at this price./ Great race and acidity for Paso. Ripe, but cool and vigorous. West Side? Tremendous display of purple fruits and flowers. 16.4+.

WT102908-08. 05 MONTEVINA AMADOR AGLIANICO - (U.S.) Large wood and large, black, and ripe aglianico fruit to match. Or almost match, at least. The wood does still have the upper hand yet, particularly because the fruit is 05 compact in youth. But it deepens as the wine airs./ Full wood on the palate too. I have confidence that the fruit will well up to match given air and age. Amador warmth and power. Long, savory finish. Just needs time. 15.8+.

WT102908-09. 06 MONTEVINA TERRA D’ORO AMADOR SANGIOVESE - (U.S.) Good wood. Good sangiovese range of sweet cherry, fine herbs, and spicy savors. Deep and real sangiovese enhanced by wood extras./ Sweet fruit and oak. Good sangiovese flavor range, and acidity too. Full and savory, especially as California sangioveses go. Will improve with age. All the Montevinas were popular this evening, even among the Europhiles. 16.2+.

Good acidity for gewurztraminer, especially California, and good gewurz astringency too. Gewurz exchange of viscosity versus astringency. Mmm, long and juicy. Class act. Food wine. 16.2.

Very flavorful. Good acidity, depth, and balance. This is a full-bodied, full-textured rose for fall and winter service. In fact, we’re going to serve it at the 11/20 Tasters Guild dinner. 15.8.

Pinot value indeed. 16.4.

All coordinated. Sweet, spicy, oaky, berried./ Sassafras, vanilla, bitter chocolate. Rich in both warm and cool tones. Fine balance of the varietals and of fruit and oak. Great future. 16.3+.

WT101508-03. 07 CASTILLA Y LEON TEMPRANILLO, VIZORRO - (SPAIN) Very bright. Sweet but cool. Berry and pepper. Modern, polished style that brings to the table both ripe and cool aspects. Oak suggestions./ Very cool indeed. Young. Astringent still. And somewhat tannic. Flavors of tar, tobacco, roast coffee, and bitter chocolate. Resembles a lot of 05 northern Spain tempranillos. 15.2+.

WT101508-04. 05 VALENCIA TEMPRANILLO-CABERNET SAUVIGNON, SEQUIOT - (SPAIN) 50/50. Deep fruit with some oak and cedar rewards. Racy cabernet black currant character. Sweet vanilla oak touch./ Sweet on entry with good dryness in the middle and enough plumpness and glycerol to keep it from turning ascetic. Good acidity, especially for 05. Sweet blueberry and black currant flavors. Will appreciate another year’s aging. 16.1+.

WT101508-05. 06 BARBERA DEL PIEMONTE, BRICCO DEI TATI - (ITALY) Really dense and sweet. Tar and cherry. Nicely burnished. / Racy and sweet both. Great raw acidity of barbera. Only thing that’s missing is a daring edge of VA. This is the sort of real barbera I wish we could see more often. A versatile food wine at an affordable price. Not a barbera that tries to be too big for its boots. Bright, ripe, and tangy fruit acidity. Wildly popular among fans of a so described barbera wine. 16.2+.

WT101508-06. 06 UMBRIA RURIS, COLSANTO - (ITALY) 70% sangiovese, 20% merlot, 10% sagrantino. Wow! Some sagrantino, the Gucci grape of Umbrian reds, especially $50 plus Montefalco. But that doesn’t make this wine. I get full force, full quality, classic sangiovese in the main. Dried cherry, anise, tar, beef jerky./ Rich, racy. Great acidity and enough sweetness and glycerol to counter. Complete central Italy sangiovese augmented by merlot roundness and sagrantino meatiness. Impressively long, Energizer Bunny finish. Very popular with the group. 16.4+.

WT101508-07. 05 SICILIA NERO D’AVOLA, ALCESTI - (ITALY) Sweet black cherry and tar. Fully charged nero d’avola. Sweet cherry creme too. Vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Wow!/ And the palate is sweet and accomplished, rich, burnished, stylish. With great acidity. Fine tannin. All the right stuff. Very long also. 16.1+.

WT101508-08. 04 MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO GIRONE DEI FOLLI, VILLA BIZZARI - (ITALY) Deep and smoky, with that elusive violets aura that marks good montepulciano wines and stakes a claim that this is indeed a noble variety if not from alluvial plains vineyards that pump out 20 tons per acre. Sense of oak here, or at least barrel aging. Fine and rich overall impression./ Plum, currant, tobacco, and bacon flavors. Fine acidity, balance, juice. Polished, accomplished, even sophisticated. Claret style. Overall, the most popular Italian red with the group. 16.4+.

WT101508-09. MARSALA FINE I. P. AMBRA SWEET, ALCESTI - (FORTIFIED) Sweet, toasted, and raisiny. And very spicy. Like Christmas cake. Nuts, honey, molasses, coffee./ Sweetness cooled by high alcohol. Great balance, thus. Say, this is superior to most of the stuff on the market, and the price is reasonable all the same. A bec fin in sweet marsala. I’m eager to try the dry. 16.6.

WT101508-10. 05 RHEINGAU ESTATE PINOT NOIR, HANS LANG - (GERMANY) Real northern pinot. Cool raw cherry fruit./ Not raw to the taste though. Mellow pinot, in fact. And some brett–or is it the famous pinot ‘shit’? Balanced and long. 15.4.

WT101508-11. 06 PIESPORTER GUNTERSLAY RIESLING KABINETT, ULRICH LANGGUTH - (GERMANY) Bright and fresh. Talc, powder puff, with sachet sweet spices./ Palate turns in honey and lemon. Boy, this has aromatic range! Kabinett dryness and style. This is not one of those 06 kabinetts that’s really a spatlese or auslese. Fresh acidity too. 16.3.

WT101508-12. 05 METTENHEIMER MICHELSBERG GEWURZTRAMINER KABINETT, GEIL-EIMSHEIM - (GERMANY) Good gewurz nose. It’s gentle and German rather than Alsatian. 05 form. Subtle but widespread./ Oh, now that palate is evocative! Tonic, astringent, pungent, flavorful. Some bouquet development. Good now. 16.4.

WT101508-13. 05 LANGENLONSHEIMER SCHEUREBE SPATLESE, WILLI SCHWEINHARDT - (GERMANY) Clear and cool, focused and pure scheu, lightly sweet./ Yes! Full scheu black currant and orange flavors. Fine balance of sweetness and acidity. Absolutely succulent and faithful. 16.8.

WT101508-14. 04 WENTE LIVERMORE VALLEY SYRAH - (U.S.) Since last tasted a year back, age has filled this out and added to the syrah red and black fruit characters. And there’s a kiss of oak evident too. Good acidity. Delicious. Tasty tad. 16.2.

WT101508-15. BENJAMIN MUSEUM RESERVE SE AUSTRALIA TOKAY half bottle - (FORTIFIED) Sweet and sticky classic. Raisin, spice, toffee. Alcohol has a nice, cooling effect./ Deliciously sweet. Again, the alcohol cools it, tempers the sweetness. Toast and caramel wood aspects. Very, very long and clinging–and in a positive, not cloying, respect. 17.8.

WT100808-01. 07 MACON CHARDONNAY, DOMAINE TALMARD - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Perky chardonnay yellow berry with piquant lemon and tart apple edge. Freshness and crispness in an 07 envelope of tenderness./ Good and lithe in the 07 mode. Acidity is 07 proper; doesn’t go overboard. Either does the extract and grip. This vintage is everything in moderation, and that’s to be applauded–and appreciated early on. 16.1.

WT100808-02. 02 COTES DU RHONE BLANC LES ARBOUSIERS, DOMAINE REMEJEANNE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Nice and fresh and citrusy yet. And there’s some fruit padding too. Alert and alive./ More vinous than fruity. Juicy texture. Good mealtime wine. 15.5.

WT100808-05. 01 RIESLING SCHLOSSBERG GRAND CRU LES MURETS, ZIEGLER-MAULER - (FRANCE ALSACE) Richer, with more spicy elements. Big./ Caramel and mint. Rich and dense, with a noble carriage. At a fine state of maturity. 16.5.

WT100808-06. 07 CALATAYUD GARNACHA OLD VINES FUEGO, BODEGAS ATTECA - (SPAIN) Sweet and accomplished Spanish old vines grenache with that Calatayud coolness and purpleness when compared to a grenache from Campo de Borja, and surely when compared to one from the south./ Sweet grenache indeed. Ripe and juicy, with soft smoke and sweet meats, even bacon. And caramel. Richly textured. Good acid too. Very flavorful. Why wait? 16.0.

WT100808-07. 06 TOSCANA DOGAJOLO, CARPINETO - (ITALY) 80% sangiovese, 20% cabernet sauvignon. Cool and reductive as usual. Better than the 05. Meatier, less glossy. Almost a wood aged dimension to it, and complexity./ Rich, accomplished. Love it! 16.2+.

WT100808-08. 06 CHINON LES GRAVIERES D’AMADOR D’ABBE DE TURPENAY, COULY-DUTHEIL - (FRANCE LOIRE) Lightly sweet cherry and soft earth and an animal tone./ True Loire cabernet franc taut fruit, with animal strengths. Firm, with some fine tannin grip. 06 elegance. 3-4 years to peak. 15.8+.

WT100108-01. 07 STERLING VINTNER’S COLLECTION CENTRAL COAST SAUVIGNON BLANC - (U.S.) Reasonably crisp and varietal. Quince, green apple, verbena, herbs./ Very dry. Acidity on the mild side. I like these with more cut. Well liked by the group though. 14.8.

WT100108-02. 07 MERIDIAN CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY - (U.S.) Chardonnay apple and some floral overtones like there’s chardonnay musque in the cuvee...or an aromatic varietal. Oak makes its presence known./ Oak flavor stands apart from the fruit still. Needs time to settle in. Pineapple and citrus flavors. Preferred previous vintages under the Santa Barbara appellation. 14.0.

WT100108-03. 07 ERBACHER HONIGBERG RIESLING, VON ERBACH liter - (GERMANY) Fresh, appley, and crisp. Hints of lemon bar and floral perfumes./ Juicy. 07 ease. A good quaff. Fun stuff. The group thought this a good value in liters. 15.8+.

WT100108-04. 07 CHATEAU STE. MICHELLE COLUMBIA VALLEY RIESLING - (U.S.) Peach-apricot and ginger. Pear, melon, talc, and tea leaf. Cool and silky. Lovely now./ Nice, light touch of sweetness. Very juicy and racy. One of the best vintages of this. Or we’ve caught it at the right stage. Younger, and there would be fermentations odors; older, and it wouldn’t be so vigorous, bright, and fresh. Well liked by the group. 16.2.

WT100108-05. 06 GEWURZTRAMINER, THE FURST - (FRANCE ALSACE) Oh, boy! Orange oil, apricot, spice, rosewater and glycerine. Exciting depth, complexity, power. Dense and ripe. High toned./ Mild acidity of gewurz. Some glycerol and astringency but neither over-emphatic. Needs time to fill out. Well liked by the group. 16.6+.

WT100108-06. 07 CHATEAU STE. MICHELLE COLUMBIA VALLEY GEWURZTRAMINER - (U.S.) Nice rosewater and glycerine nose. Rich. Shows poise./ Soft, demur gewurz profile. Delicious balance of glycerine, spice, flowers, fruits, citricity. Clean acid carriage. Very pretty. Like the riesling, one of the best vintages of this, in addition to the best stage. Glad I tasted this before the more powerful Alsace wine. Well liked by the group. 16.4.

WT100108-07. 06 DONA SOL CALIFORNIA MERLOT - (U.S.) Sweet fruited but also dark fruited. Cherry and licorice./ Boy, the cherry flavor is great! Better and more intense than the nose. Cool and coastally inclined. Keeps this series running in high gear. The group thought this an excellent value, as they did the 05 last year. 15.2.

Spiced berries and peppercorn./ Good concentration of sweet cabernet blackberry flavor. Suggestion of oak too. Tarry, tannic, extracted. Some press wine involved? Needs a few months. 15.0+.

Black currant, cedar, wild flowers, tobacco, smoke, and game./ This is as plentiful on the palate as the nose in terms of ripe fruit and animal extras. Pretty and stylish fruit, with floral and oaky accents. Racy acidity of the vintage. Will reward 3-4 years’ aging, but can be enjoyed today. Kudos to the winemaker and winegrower. WT100108-15. 06 COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES, DOMAINE SAINTE ANNE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Oh, boy! The extra range and concentration of Villages fully apparent. Lovely, cool blueberry tones of Gard, and sweet raspberry syrah utterances too. Great nose./ Yes, this is much fruitier and demonstrative in youth than either the 05 or the 04. Fresh acid and mineral carriage focus the elements. Delicious. Gard coolness and blue fruit, with plenty of ripeness and fine tannin. Well liked by the group. 16.8+.

WT100108-16. 07 MONTSANT, CAN BLAU, CELLER CAN BLAU - (SPAIN) 40% mazuelo, 40% syrah, 20% grenache. Bright, fresh, black, creamy fruit. Intense black currant. Violets. Has no use for wood./ Rich, packed in fruit and peels. Good acidity. Well concentrated. Lush and ripe, full and supple, structured and promising. The tannins are still a little harsh. This has potential for brilliance. Well liked by the group. 16.8+.
