Lots of extract. Fine limestone impression. Some bouquet coming on already./ Yes, great extract, grip, chalkiness, pungence. Touch of edelfirne. The usual good stuff here. Big-structured mealtime Pfalz riesling. 16.8.

Fruit and oak in harmony./ Tight on the palate still; wouldn’t you expect a cabernet of this age to be? Good acidity, depth, and structure. Smoothness of glycerol plays against the tannin to make for an exciting mouth-feel. Balanced. Long aftertaste. Well crafted, well poised, well priced. 16.0+.

WT0725-09. 04 TOSCANA MORO, FATTORIA MONTELLORI - (ITALY) Great 04 fruit darkness but thankfully not tightness, meanness. Yes, the time is coming for the 04 Tuscans. Deep, burnished black fruits with anise, tobacco, bacon, and leather notes. Fine oak toast extras that the 03's fruit ripeness tended to obscure./ Rich and resourceful. Great race and acidity. Exceptionally sophisticated oak contributions for a wine in this price range. Lots of potential. 16.7+.

WT0725-10. 05 CORBIERES, CHATEAU PRAT DE CEST - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) I continue to be a fan. Tight, right. Spicy, briary. Bold, ripe, dense black fruit with touches of vanilla, tar, and anise. Yes!/ Racy and well balanced. Lively, forward, mouth-filling. There’s the 05 fruit ripeness without excess. Lovely, well composed; indeed, a complete Corbieres. 16.2+.

Old style like the rose./ Ripe, but also bright and nicely focused. Very flavorful. Abundant range of fruit and animal tones. Big and full. Yes, a fine savor. Commendable depth. Leans toward the rustic style of the past here; much more-so than the Liracs. Should prove a warm, endearing, and enduring treat like the 03. 16.4.

Lovely, sophisticated black fruits, floral overtones. An opulent potpourri of spices and incenses. Great saturation, subtleties, scope, and depth./ Tight on the palate too, but racier. It flows rather than grips. Full bodied and weighty. Great finesse throughout. Will improve 5-7 + years. The best Lirac of all? 18.3+.

Peach, flowers, loquat and orange zest Rheingau riesling beauties./ Full flavored. Lively, dense, racy. Exceptionally concentrated; must be a spatlese at least. Acidity still somewhat coated. No problem. Great depth. 16.6+.

WT0725-18. 06 NIERSTEINER HIPPING RIESLING SPATLESE, GEORG-ALBRECHT SCHNEIDER - (GERMANY) Alert, uplifting Hipping tangerine and stone aromas. Rich notes of peach, apricot, melon, red currant, and honey too./ Rambunctious, sweet, and savory, with tangy acidity. Full and fleshy. Botrytis notes. Spatlese concentration at least. Cool and confident and composed. Deserves time. 16.6++.

WT0718-01. 06 VERMENTINO DI SARDEGNA PALA, CRABILIS - (ITALY) Good varietal character. The apple component and the viscosity remind me of pinot gris. Toss in some floral flair and tropics and there’s a viognier resemblance. Combines several of the assets of both varietals./ Zesty, stimulating, well focused flavors. Fine depth. Balanced. Juicy, vibrant fruit acidity. Well rounded fruit ripeness and nice tender measure of glycerol. Bitter citrus peel edge. All around nice example of vermentino. 16.3.

WT0718-02. 06 COTES DU LUBERON BLANC, CHATEAU VAL JOANIS - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Good and full. Good green fruit aromatics suggesting bourboulenc, ugni, picpoul. Fine rep of the appellation./ Full. Big presence. Astringency alleviates any ponderous tendencies of a high-alcohol southern white. Fine mineral flair. Great dinner wine. 16.5.

Plenty of creamy, smoky oak./ Yes, thick and full. Nice oak caramel, toast, and vanilla. On the strong side. Chill it down good for greater refreshment, and serve with feathered, not finny, friends. 15.5.

WT0718-06. 06 VOUVRAY, CHATEAU DE VALMER - (FRANCE LOIRE) Tight, with the good quince quality of chenin and a touch of lime, which is also classic. Right. Brisker than the 05. Has real zip./ Good honey and quince flavors. Some baby fat still, but the 06 acidity is prime. Very nice Vouvray for the price. 16.3.

Heady negociant style of Cotes du Rhone./ Yes, old time solidity, structure, acidity. Dry mealtime wine and a good ager too. 16.3+.

WT0718-14. 06 CLINE CALIFORNIA ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) Young, pungent, strong. Stems and peels–marc, grappa. Ripe and fleshy, burnished black fruit with touches of briar and jam. Some oak nuances./ Sweet and jammy, with Lodi leanings, but not all Valley; some coastal suggestions too. Strong. Will need some bottle age to come up to the quality of the 05 we enjoyed in June. 14.3+.

WT0718-15. 05 URZIGER WURZGARTEN RIESLING AUSLESE #14, ALFRED MERKELBACH - (GERMANY) Stony and slatey, with Wurzgarten spiciness. Peach and apple fruit. Huge extract. This clearly has heaps of material./ Full auslese heft and sweetness. Lush, ripe peach and spices. Fine 05 structure. Youthfully plump and undeveloped, but, again, this clearly has the material and makings of greatness. 17.3++.

WT071107-01. 92 LANGENLOISER SPIEGEL WEISSBURGUNDER TROCKEN, DR. HIEDLER - (AUSTRIA) Whoa! Up from the deep! Yes, and the recesses are dark and cool, so this one looks youthful still. Maybe because it had excess sulphur to start. Lively nose of ripe pear, with hints of pineapple, vanilla, and limestone./ Round, luxuriant, mature yellow fruits feels and flavors. Good pungence. 15.5.

And delightful./ Again, very bright, lemony tang. Big, weighty, tangy, handsome, serious, persistent. Great transparency, clarity of expression, definition. WT071107-08. 06 NAVARRA GRAN FEUDO ROSE, JULIAN CHIVITE - (SPAIN) Firm, high altitude rose. Good peels and earth tones. Not a fruit bomb. Clean, crisp, and dry./ Yes, it doesn’t have the bountiful aromatics of the Caceres. Or the Chivite 05 for that matter. Maybe we’re tasting it younger. Fine form though. And tangy red fruits evident throughout the tasting experience. Power, acid, grip, even a suggestion of light tannin. Not an aperitif, not a sipper. Mouthfilling. This is made for the dinner table. Hemingway would have liked this. 16.1.

Good acidity keeps it in balance, prevents it from getting mushy. Lots of ease, accommodation, generosity. Many zweigelts show a dry austerity. The varietal doesn’t have to be that way. 16.0.

WT071107-12. 05 BARBERA D’ASTI SURI RUSS, VILLA GIADA - (ITALY) A big, handsome, smoky, tarry reduction of black cherries. Bright and intense. Fine flair and depth. Layers of aromatics unfold as it breathes. Black and red fruits, all kinds of interesting berries and flowers, including lavender. One loaded barbera./ Nice, spicy tobacco and grape peel extras. Fruit sweetness and peel-extract grip in balance. Attractive time-in-barrel polish. Great barbera acidity. Bold, hard-hitting, mouthfilling, intense, vigorous. Fine depth and tensile strength. Delivers now, and will improve. A big group favorite. 16.6+.

WT071107-13. 04 BOLGHERI ROSSO, MICHELE SATTA - (ITALY) Sweet, ripe, and easy for an 04. Well, they are a year older now. So I guess I should expect some loosening up. The late release here may suggest more time in cooperage too. Yes, this is boisterous, soft, sexy, and bountiful, with dense, burnished fruit, barrel seasonings, and prosciutto highlights. ‘Kick-*@#!,’ comments Jorge./ Very bright, ripe berry core fruit with rich, mature oak intricacies in coordination. Nice flow to it. Good acidity besides. Friendly and fabulous. 16.5.

Cassis, prune, warm tar, ink, tobacco, and florals. Nicely controlled, especially considering the vintage./ Wow! Full, potent, complex, generous, uncompromising. Well balanced–both sweet and chewy. Will improve through winter. 16.7+.

Racy, spicy, intriguing, smoky, oaky. Old-style classic Cahors: black and beguiling malbec fruit with herbs and leather. Chewy texture. Lots of room for growth. 16.3+.

And class./ Sweet Aussie fruit controlled by Limestone Coast coolness and peels extracts. Not a lot of oak showing. More like time in seasoned oak. Well structured. The tannin is fine textured and lightly chewy. Well crafted. Will improve, but balanced well enough present use. 16.3+.

Compact black fruit, bitter chocolate, pitch, dusty earth. Positive warmth. Real complexity./ Big build. Spicy French oak flavors. Calm and confident. Ambitious indeed. 17.0+.

WT070407-01. 06 VINHO VERDE, ENCOSTAS DO LIMA - (PORTUGAL) Cooperative do Ponte de Lima. 10.5%. Medium dry. Very fresh of course, with fresh-cut melon (honeydew, watermelon) aromas. Lively, tangy citrus extras. Hints of pear and quince./ Sweet apple, lime, and melon flavors. Cool and firm in youth. Light sweetness, with good acidity and some CO2 petillance that has a drying effect. Classic. Will fill out over the next few months. 16.0+.

Still on the tight side. Good acidity. Well crafted and delightful. Needs food. Will expand steadily over the coming months. 15.6+.

WT070407-04. 06 BRYS ESTATE NAKED OLD MISSION PENINSULA CHARDONNAY - (U.S.) Lots of flair, lively expressiveness. More than the typical chardonnay perfume. Apple and pear, yes, but tropics too–not the usual cool-climate chardonnay aroma. Back label refers to tropical aromas also. How here? Clone? Yeast strain? Whatever, it’s engaging and seductive./ Smooth entry. Good tangy, lively, penetrating acidity follows. Fresh apple crunchiness. Finishes a little hot and heavy from the high alcohol (13.5%). Comes as no surprise. Reductive winemaking here./ Deep and full concentration of citrus and other tropical fruits. Spatlese sweetness and intensity. Great acidity too. Always fine. I expected it to be exceptionally fine in 05, and it is. Great future too. 17.5+.

All three varieties identifiable and presented in a balanced fashion. Light gewurz rose, riesling peach, pinot gris apple and cream. Ripe, plump, sleek, and lovely./ Well balanced and harmonious whole already, which is unusual in a cuvee of this complexity. Ripe and immediate fruit appeal, round and juicy, with a creamy lushness.
