wt012506-01. PIERRE MONCUIT LE MESNIL GRAND CRU CUVEE MONCUIT-DELOS BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) Full blanc de blancs lift. Exuberant, fine mousse. Full Le Mesnil sort of chardonnay, deep, burnished, penetrating. Big toastiness of long lees aging. Apple, citrus, minerals. Burgundian./ Rich and voluminous. Full cookie dough, biscuit, and graham flavors of long sur-lie aging. Verve, vitality, charm. Long and accomplished. Fine right along, Moncuit’s wines seem to be getting even finer. 17.6.

wt012506-02. R-H COUTIER AMBONNAY GRAND CRU BRUT CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) Full strawberry chiffon aroma. Lots of cream and bright, juicy red fruit. Good toasty bottle bouquet./ Again, the strawberry and cream. This is Ambonnay pinot. Bouzy is Pommard (cherry); Ambonnay is Volnay (strawberry). Fluffed up, whipped up, and sweetened fruit mousse. Nice tingle of peel extracts and acidity to whisk it off clean. The usual good stuff here. Right in character. 17.3.

wt012506-03. 03 MARKHAM NAPA VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC - (U.S.) Tangerine, tumbo, pineapple, and other tropical fruits. Touch of oak. Growing a little dense with age./ Sweet and smooth palate. Not so alcoholic and heavy on the tongue. Good food wine. 14.9.

wt012506-04. 03 GLASS MOUNTAIN CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY - (U.S.) Brisk apple-citrus chardonnay fruit with a large measure of oak chips. The fruit sweetens up with airing./ The oak is not so obvious on the palate. Nice melange of sweet fruit and oak vanilla-and-spice seasoning. O.K. 14.4.

wt012506-05. 04 MARKHAM NAPA VALLEY CHARDONNAY - (U.S.) Now, this is wine in oak, not oak in wine. French oak, class oak. Fine, toasted, spicy oak complex. Butterscotch. Fresh, appley chardonnay fruit aroma, with some peach, pear, melon, and tropical fruit extras./ Good power and glycerol. Intense apple and oak-spice flavors. Some citrus. Fine depth. Handsome. Certainly upscale compared to the Glass Mountain, Markham’s second wine. 16.3.

wt012506-07. 03 SAINT AUBIN BLANC, DOMAINE BERNARD MOREY - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Full of Morey’s liberal oakiness and of 03's sweet, warmed fruit. Big and powerful in the 03 style. The oak is full but the fruit is certainly ample enough to contain it this vintage. Apple, pear, stone fruit. Toast, nut, and caramel./ Fat and rich 03 style. Packed with flavor. Plenty of glycerol. Toasty, smoky aftertaste. Much larger-scaled than the average Saint Aubin thanks to vintage ripeness. 16.7.

wt012506-08. 02 BOURGOGNE HAUTES COTES DE BEAUNE, DOMAINE ROLLIN - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Pretty light colored./ Sweet, bright cherry pinot fruit, crisp and crunchy in the 02 style. In fact, almost to the extent of the tea-like 01 style. Good peel extracts./ Grip and peel and coolness of 02. Lots of fine-grained tannin. Great fruit acidity. Needs time. Expensive for the appellation, but, then, it’s a superior example, without a trace of rusticity. 16.0+.

wt012506-09. 02 MARSANNAY LES VAUDENELLES 1ER CRU, DOMAINE BRUNO CLAIR - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Fuller in color and body and delivery. More main-Cote amplitude. Deep, dark cherry scent, wild, intense, very pure. Also layered and complex./ Rich, lush, loaded. Lots of heavy Clair framing. Cherry, cherry juice, cherry blossom. Full fruit material, acid, and tannin. Loaded indeed. Has really put on weight since last tasted a year or so ago. 17.0+.

Carneros fruit acidity gives bite, and oak gives a mellowing milk chocolate and caramel coating. Strong and linear in the Carneros mode./ Juicy, sweet, flavorful, voluminous, even explosive. The palate shows ample enough fruit to handle the oak. Lush, deep, lovely, confident, well poised. Oak and fruit sets should merge in a few months to make a complete package. 16.3+.

Certainly unique from the Cote des Blancs styles. Big and forceful nose. Seductive and generous bouquet of baked apple, peach cobbler, nuts, and brandy./ Lots of biscuity bottle bouquet, with more to come. Fine, refreshing blanc de blancs fruit acidity. l6.8.

wt011806-02. E. BARNAUT BOUZY GRAND CRU CUVEE EDMOND BRUT CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) Frothy, doughy style of this cuvee, which incorporates a good dose of old-vines meunier. Very sophisticated meunier indeed. Nutty and chalky. Chardonnay adds granny smith apple and pinot noir notes of cherry and strawberry-rhubarb, as well as body, density, and muscle. Even some vanillin. Old vines indeed./ Creamy, nutty, sophisticated. A lot of material packed in here. It even coats the acidity. An abundant future predicted. 17.0+.

Even catty./ Sweetish, but there’s plenty of grass and grapefruit tang to assuage. Lush and engaging, but also solid, and with good acidity. Nice bottle, if not classically varietal. Food-worthy. 15.7.

Shows style, finesse, and plenty of stone fruits./ Again, very bright. Great malic vigor of 04. Rich mineral base. Good oak toast, vanilla, and cream. Long and filling. 16.7.

Lovely, brisk, vibrant blanc de blancs with Le Mesnil substance. Huge, billowing bouquet that swells the nostrils with apple, citrus, and bakery sensations../ Powerful, regal Le Mesnil style. Forceful, penetrating, loaded. Very full, chewy extract. Brightness and concentration that mark this, the best vintage since 1996. A measuring rod for 99 blanc de blancs. 18.4+.

Subtly complex./ Huge, commanding palate. Very thick and creamy. Full-bore bottle bouquet and old-vines intensity. Very fine, well integrated mousse. Seems to have been longer on its lees than the above. Will reward 1-2 years’ cellaring. 18.7++.

You get the fleshy concentration and creamy lushness and also the sleek minerality. Well composed and comfortable with itself./ Yes. Both bright and rich, showing both old vines concentration and lots of flair. Fabulous composure. Seems so comfortable, like the 04 Vouvray Champalou at Wine Club. Can’t think of a vintage quite like this. There’s some of both 02 and 03 about it, but that’s an oversimplification. Tremendous depth. 17.2.

Lots of oak, but it’s French so not blatant. Big toastiness./ Big body and texture. Warm-vintage and new-wave (Girardin) Burgundy knock-off with heavy toast, nut, ripe citrus fruit, surprising acidity, fine framing and power. Well executed. 16.4.

Sleek-textured, with a soft mineral backdrop./ Brilliant, juicy fruit acidity, with a layer of fat for padding. The most outgoing, dynamic, and expressive Dessus yet. Super. 16.6.

wt011106-07. 04 CHABLIS VIEILLES VIGNES, GILBERT PICQ - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Nuttier. More backward. Not as rich and forthcoming at this stage as usual. Compact and old-vines full. Speaks volumes but in a low tone of voice. Latent./ Juicy malic acidity that marks the 04 Chablis vintage. Very high-pitched, flinty, racy. This just needs time. 16.7++.

wt011106-8. 04 CHABLIS VOSGROS 1ER CRU, GILBERT PICQ - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Yes, here’s the usual plump and pliant, creamy, enticing, vanilla-frosted style of this cuvee. Full./ Very full textured. Full malic vigor and plenty of flint and calcaire. And extract. Chewy. The palate has a lot of burnish that the richness of the nose belies. 16.9+.

wt011106-9. 04 CHABLIS VAUCOUPIN 1ER CRU, GILBERT PICQ - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Now here’s the flint and the calcaire in spades. Firm and grand. Total Vaucoupin./ Big and structured and firm. Chewy mineral-rich extract. Fabulous. The contrast between Premiers Crus is consistent with past vintages. 17.3+.

wt011106-10. 04 SAINT VERAN TERRES NOIRES, DOMAINE DES DEUX ROCHES - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Oak and grip here. Lots of power and a heavy char as usual. A very hefty and succulent Maconnais./ Yes, this is full and muscular. And dark as pertains to the oak as well as the soil. The fruit is fat, the palate showing a pleasant acidity and good depth and promise. 16.5+.

wt011106-11. 03 SANCERRE ROUGE, ETIENNE DAULNY - (FRANCE LOIRE) Oh, boy! Total saturation, power, alcohol. I think I get some oak even. Total 03 ripeness. Full, flamboyant, surging, penetrating, variegated pinot bouquet. Vaguely northern still, but the vintage’s warmth certainly moves the concept south. Cherry, tobacco, grappa, garrigue./ Ripe and rich. Mild acidity for its AC, but the wine is framed and balanced by alcohol and tannin. Stylistically, it certainly empathizes with the 03 red burgundies. Easily the ripest and biggest Sancerre rouge I’ve tasted. 17.0+.

Brilliant floral perfume and potpourri of aromatic overtones. Lovely, penetrating, classic blue fruits of Ste. Anne./ Grip, garrigue, purity, and form of Ste. Anne. Grace, charm, and confidence. Chewy, fine-grained tannins. Nice extract. Super. Like the CdR, it reminds me of the great 78. 16.6+.

A hearty wine./ Cherry, raspberry, tar, spice, straw. Rich, full, strong. Rather aggressive tannin and power still. Time should tame it. 16.7++.

Big and backward. Garrigue, lavender, cedar, mineral dust, anise. Thoroughly Vacqueyras. Wow! This is the CdR condensed. A complete Vacqueyras package./ Yes, full and textured to the extent expected of the appellation. Well balanced. Distinctive, elegant, tremendous. Total potential of the 78 style. 16.8++.

Biscuity bottle bouquet./ Rich, fat, nutty. Again, showing good en tirage aging. Paradoxically, it’s both tight and well-bouqueted. Authoritative, big, with almost a red-wine demeanor. Opens nicely as it warms and airs. Take to the table. 17.3.

Good 02 extract for grip and form./ Thick, rich, and strong. Has the alcohol, glycerol, and astringency for a nice, typical gewurz balance. Bargain price for Alsace gewurz. Given that all four of these Engels are priced the same, I know which one I’d recommend the highest. 16.4.

wt010406-17. OSBORNE OLOROSO DULCE CREAM SHERRY - (FORTIFIED) Thick. Heavy in PX but not to maple-syrup extreme. Cookie dough, honey, date, and nut cream. The alcohol cools it nicely. Relatively young, but not pasty. Strong on walnut–a good oloroso feature./ The alcohol is cooling on the palate too. Keeps the wine from being sticky. Rich and mouth-filling, with some sophistication of age. A bargain. 16.2.
