MONCUIT LE MESNIL GRAND CRU CUVEE MONCUIT-DELOS BLANC DE BLANCS
BRUT CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) Full blanc
de blancs lift. Exuberant, fine mousse. Full Le Mesnil sort of chardonnay,
deep, burnished, penetrating. Big toastiness of long lees aging.
Apple, citrus, minerals. Burgundian./ Rich and voluminous. Full
cookie dough, biscuit, and graham flavors of long sur-lie aging.
Verve, vitality, charm. Long and accomplished. Fine right along,
Moncuit’s wines seem to be getting even finer. 17.6. wt012506-02. R-H
COUTIER AMBONNAY GRAND CRU BRUT CHAMPAGNE
- (SPARKLING) Full strawberry chiffon aroma. Lots of cream and bright,
juicy red fruit. Good toasty bottle bouquet./ Again, the strawberry
and cream. This is Ambonnay pinot. Bouzy is Pommard (cherry); Ambonnay
is Volnay (strawberry). Fluffed up, whipped up, and sweetened fruit
mousse. Nice tingle of peel extracts and acidity to whisk it off
clean. The usual good stuff here. Right in character. 17.3. wt012506-03. 03
MARKHAM NAPA VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC -
(U.S.) Tangerine, tumbo, pineapple, and other tropical fruits. Touch
of oak. Growing a little dense with age./ Sweet and smooth palate.
Not so alcoholic and heavy on the tongue. Good food wine. 14.9. wt012506-04. 03
GLASS MOUNTAIN CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY -
(U.S.) Brisk apple-citrus chardonnay fruit with a large measure
of oak chips. The fruit sweetens up with airing./ The oak is not
so obvious on the palate. Nice melange of sweet fruit and oak vanilla-and-spice
seasoning. O.K. 14.4. wt012506-05. 04
MARKHAM NAPA VALLEY CHARDONNAY - (U.S.)
Now, this is wine in oak, not oak in wine. French oak, class oak.
Fine, toasted, spicy oak complex. Butterscotch. Fresh, appley chardonnay
fruit aroma, with some peach, pear, melon, and tropical fruit extras./
Good power and glycerol. Intense apple and oak-spice flavors. Some
citrus. Fine depth. Handsome. Certainly upscale compared to the
Glass Mountain, Markham’s second wine. 16.3. wt012506-06. 03
CUVAISON CARNEROS CHARDONNAY - (U.S.)
Sleek and classy. Lovely stone fruits and touches of pear and citrus.
Laid back./ Vibrant, charming, lemony Carneros style. Throughout,
the oak is subtle and well integrated. Nice dash of peel bitterness
on the finish whisks it clean. 16.3. wt012506-07. 03
SAINT AUBIN BLANC, DOMAINE BERNARD MOREY
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Full of Morey’s liberal oakiness and of 03's
sweet, warmed fruit. Big and powerful in the 03 style. The oak is
full but the fruit is certainly ample enough to contain it this
vintage. Apple, pear, stone fruit. Toast, nut, and caramel./ Fat
and rich 03 style. Packed with flavor. Plenty of glycerol. Toasty,
smoky aftertaste. Much larger-scaled than the average Saint Aubin
thanks to vintage ripeness. 16.7. wt012506-08. 02
BOURGOGNE HAUTES COTES DE BEAUNE, DOMAINE ROLLIN - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Pretty light colored./ Sweet, bright
cherry pinot fruit, crisp and crunchy in the 02 style. In fact,
almost to the extent of the tea-like 01 style. Good peel extracts./
Grip and peel and coolness of 02. Lots of fine-grained tannin. Great
fruit acidity. Needs time. Expensive for the appellation, but, then,
it’s a superior example, without a trace of rusticity. 16.0+. wt012506-09. 02
MARSANNAY LES VAUDENELLES 1ER CRU, DOMAINE BRUNO CLAIR - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Fuller in color and body and delivery.
More main-Cote amplitude. Deep, dark cherry scent, wild, intense,
very pure. Also layered and complex./ Rich, lush, loaded. Lots of
heavy Clair framing. Cherry, cherry juice, cherry blossom. Full
fruit material, acid, and tannin. Loaded indeed. Has really put
on weight since last tasted a year or so ago. 17.0+. wt012506-10. 03
CUVAISON CARNEROS PINOT NOIR - (U.S.)
Clear, crisp, bright Carneros pinot cherry aroma. Carneros fruit
acidity gives bite, and oak gives a mellowing milk chocolate and
caramel coating. Strong and linear in the Carneros mode./ Juicy,
sweet, flavorful, voluminous, even explosive. The palate shows ample
enough fruit to handle the oak. Lush, deep, lovely, confident, well
poised. Oak and fruit sets should merge in a few months to make
a complete package. 16.3+. wt012506-11. 02
GLASS MOUNTAIN CALIFORNIA MERLOT - (U.S.)
Sweet and candied merlot fruit with oak garnish. Heart on sleeve
styling./ Plenty of sweet merlot fruit and sweet oak. Lively acidity.
Engaging.15.4. wt012506-12. 02
MARKHAM NAPA VALLEY MERLOT - (U.S.) Ripe,
sweet black cherry. Fleshy fruit with soft, peppery wood spice.
Violets, cassis, blackberry. Intense. Tightly wound core./ Palate
shows tight and tough fruit compaction. Brooding rather than eager
like many 02s. Will require some aging to open it up. 15.6+. wt012506-13. 01
CUVAISON CARNEROS MERLOT - (U.S.) More
forward, with ripe, sweet red raspberry and loganberry jam aromas
and smoky, toasty oak. Large-scaled./ Black and red cherry flavors.
Weighty, intense, and structured. Classy, tensile 01 style. Fine
acidity, tannin, depth. 16.3+. wt012506-14. 01
GLASS MOUNTAIN CALIFORNIA CABERNET SAUVIGNON
- (U.S.) Sleek, high-strung black fruits. On the juggy side./ Vinous
and generous. Pleasant enough, but without coastal panache. 13.5. wt012506-15. 01
MARKHAM NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
- (U.S.) Smoke, earth, and ripe black fruits. Lush and attractive
plumminess, with reserved, sweet berry core./ Flavors of currant
and blackberry. Very lively fruit acidity of 01 and compact tannic
structure. Plenty of oak seasoning. 15.7+. wt012506-16. 00
SCHWEIGER SPRING MOUNTAIN DISTRICT CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S.) Deep, dark, secretive, purple, vital. Currant,
black olive, tobacco, tar, and leather–quite a complex aromatic
set. Only a little bouquet peeking around the edges. Very pure cabernet
fruit. A great 00./ Rich and concentrated. Pure, dark, velvety.
Great density. Has it all. A super bargain at this closeout price.
16.9. wt012506-17. 01
CUVAISON NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
- (U.S.) Bright, brilliant even. Majestic, big framed 01 with great
acidity and power and dignity. Stylish oak, with cigar-box overtones.
Lovely, pure black currant fruit. Total 01./ Great, suave cabernet
fruit, very well managed. Blackberry, loam, bitter chocolate, spices.
Fine 01 acidity and framework. Big, noble, cool, aloof, loaded.
17.4+. wt012506-18. 01
GLASS MOUNTAIN CALIFORNIA SYRAH - (U.S.)
Nutty, lively black fruits with touches of herbs and leather./ Big,
sturdy California style of syrah. Generous. Some hefty tannins for
a wine in this price range. 14.5.
Wednesday, January 18, 2006 wt011806-01. COUTIER
AMBONNAY GRAND CRU BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) Full, nutty, long-on-lees Montagne de Reims
style of blanc de blancs. Certainly unique from the Cote des Blancs
styles. Big and forceful nose. Seductive and generous bouquet of
baked apple, peach cobbler, nuts, and brandy./ Lots of biscuity
bottle bouquet, with more to come. Fine, refreshing blanc de blancs
fruit acidity. l6.8. wt011806-02. E.
BARNAUT BOUZY GRAND CRU CUVEE EDMOND BRUT CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) Frothy, doughy style of this cuvee, which
incorporates a good dose of old-vines meunier. Very sophisticated
meunier indeed. Nutty and chalky. Chardonnay adds granny smith apple
and pinot noir notes of cherry and strawberry-rhubarb, as well as
body, density, and muscle. Even some vanillin. Old vines indeed./
Creamy, nutty, sophisticated. A lot of material packed in here.
It even coats the acidity. An abundant future predicted. 17.0+. wt011806-03. 05
MAN COASTAL REGION CHENIN BLANC - (SOUTH
AFRICA) Wow! This out-sauvignons the sauvignon! Grassy and crisp.
Even catty./ Sweetish, but there’s plenty of grass and grapefruit
tang to assuage. Lush and engaging, but also solid, and with good
acidity. Nice bottle, if not classically varietal. Food-worthy.
15.7. wt011806-04. 04
MEURSAULT, THIERRY MATROT half bottle
- (FRANCE BORDEAUX) Full fruit and zesty Meursault airs of nut (Matrot’s
often show walnut instead of hazelnut), autumn, grain, and meal.
Shows style, finesse, and plenty of stone fruits./ Again, very bright.
Great malic vigor of 04. Rich mineral base. Good oak toast, vanilla,
and cream. Long and filling. 16.7. wt011806-05. 02
MONTEVINA AMADOR TEROLDEGO - (U.S.) Bright
and floral. American oak presence, but its manageable. The varietal
character is clear. Plump maraschino cherry aroma./ Soft, elegant,
mild, easy. Nice take on this varietal in a warmer setting than
it finds in northeast Italy. 15.9. wt011806-06. 04
MAN WESTERN CAPE CABERNET SAUVIGNON -
(SOUTH AFRICA) Solid cabernet build with a dose of oak it can manage.
Good cabernet form and dark material./ Bright berry and currant.
A delicious Cape cabernet. Both sweetness and grip. Nice. 15.4. wt011806-07. 03
LOS VASCOS RESERVE COLCHAGUA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (CHILE) Reserve fullness. Wood vanillin and lignin.
Dark cabernet fruit with a French coolness. Good, vital acidity
evident even on the nose./ Currant and tar. Fine fruit tannin. Made
in the refined Lafite manner. Good and full too. I’m impressed.
Best in this series in many vintages. Good price on post. 16.4+. wt011806-08. 02
FOLIE A DEUX ESTATE ST. HELENA CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S.) Very ripe fruit bomb with herbal extras. Sweet
oak. All nice and ripe and roasted. Amador comes to Napa./ Yes,
very sweet, ripe, and roasted fruit, even for 02. Good power too.
Fine tannin. The oak is well integrated. Generous wine. 16.6+. wt011806-09. 03
TRINCHERO MARIO’S RESERVE MERITAGE NAPA VALLEY RED - (U.S.) 62% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot, 7% petit
verdot - Intricate ripe fruit and spicy oak. Roasted fruit, cedar,
tobacco, and a brown sugar note./ Cohesive, stylish, well integrated
melange of fruit and oak. Sweet and smooth and balanced already.

TRINCHERO MAIN STREET VINEYARD ST. HELENA CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S.) 01 form and dark fruit. Deep vanilla and cherry
aroma. Firm, charred oak./ Good form and acidity and coolness of
01. A fine example of a Napa cabernet of this great vintage. 16.9+.
Wednesday, January 11, 2006 wt011106-01. 99
PIERRE MONCUIT LE MESNIL GRAND CRU BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) Full, creamy, toasty. Refined, deep, racy,
tensile. Lovely, brisk, vibrant blanc de blancs with Le Mesnil substance.
Huge, billowing bouquet that swells the nostrils with apple, citrus,
and bakery sensations../ Powerful, regal Le Mesnil style. Forceful,
penetrating, loaded. Very full, chewy extract. Brightness and concentration
that mark this, the best vintage since 1996. A measuring rod for
99 blanc de blancs. 18.4+. wt011106-02. 99
PIERRE MONCUIT LE MESNIL GRAND CRU NICOLE MONCUIT VIEILLES VIGNES
BRUT CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) More depth,
nuttiness, old vines concentration and density. Thick and young
still. Subtly complex./ Huge, commanding palate. Very thick and
creamy. Full-bore bottle bouquet and old-vines intensity. Very fine,
well integrated mousse. Seems to have been longer on its lees than
the above. Will reward 1-2 years’ cellaring. 18.7++. wt011106-03. 04
SANCERRE CLOS DE CHAUDENAY, ETIENNE DAULNY
- (FRANC E LOIRE) Full, full, gooseberry nose. Both fresh and full.
You get the fleshy concentration and creamy lushness and also the
sleek minerality. Well composed and comfortable with itself./ Yes.
Both bright and rich, showing both old vines concentration and lots
of flair. Fabulous composure. Seems so comfortable, like the 04
Vouvray Champalou at Wine Club. Can’t think of a vintage quite like
this. There’s some of both 02 and 03 about it, but that’s an oversimplification.
Tremendous depth. 17.2. wt011106-04. 04
COTES DU RHONE VIOGNIER, DOMAINE STE. ANNE
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Pungent Med viognier. Full, powerful. Lots
of tangelo and dried peel essence. Bitter orange, flowers, hazelnut,
cocoa butter./ Rich, full powered (14.5%) for viognier. Big alcohol
presence. Needs food...invites food... insists on food. 16.3. wt011106-05. 05
GOATS DU ROAM GOAT DOOR CHARDONNAY - (SOUTH
AFRICA) The attempt at Burgundy styling has succeeded. Strength
and breadth of a big-time Burgundy vintage. Lots of oak, but it’s
French so not blatant. Big toastiness./ Big body and texture. Warm-vintage
and new-wave (Girardin) Burgundy knock-off with heavy toast, nut,
ripe citrus fruit, surprising acidity, fine framing and power. Well
executed. 16.4. wt011106-06. 04
CHABLIS DESSUS LA CARRIERE, GILBERT PICQ
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Very fruity, very bright, and very refreshing.
Sleek-textured, with a soft mineral backdrop./ Brilliant, juicy
fruit acidity, with a layer of fat for padding. The most outgoing,
dynamic, and expressive Dessus yet. Super. 16.6. wt011106-07. 04
CHABLIS VIEILLES VIGNES, GILBERT PICQ
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Nuttier. More backward. Not as rich and forthcoming
at this stage as usual. Compact and old-vines full. Speaks volumes
but in a low tone of voice. Latent./ Juicy malic acidity that marks
the 04 Chablis vintage. Very high-pitched, flinty, racy. This just
needs time. 16.7++. wt011106-8. 04
CHABLIS VOSGROS 1ER CRU, GILBERT PICQ
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Yes, here’s the usual plump and pliant, creamy,
enticing, vanilla-frosted style of this cuvee. Full./ Very full
textured. Full malic vigor and plenty of flint and calcaire. And
extract. Chewy. The palate has a lot of burnish that the richness
of the nose belies. 16.9+. wt011106-9. 04
CHABLIS VAUCOUPIN 1ER CRU, GILBERT PICQ
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Now here’s the flint and the calcaire in spades.
Firm and grand. Total Vaucoupin./ Big and structured and firm. Chewy
mineral-rich extract. Fabulous. The contrast between Premiers Crus
is consistent with past vintages. 17.3+. wt011106-10. 04
SAINT VERAN TERRES NOIRES, DOMAINE DES DEUX ROCHES - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Oak and grip here. Lots of power
and a heavy char as usual. A very hefty and succulent Maconnais./
Yes, this is full and muscular. And dark as pertains to the oak
as well as the soil. The fruit is fat, the palate showing a pleasant
acidity and good depth and promise. 16.5+. wt011106-11. 03
SANCERRE ROUGE, ETIENNE DAULNY - (FRANCE
LOIRE) Oh, boy! Total saturation, power, alcohol. I think I get
some oak even. Total 03 ripeness. Full, flamboyant, surging, penetrating,
variegated pinot bouquet. Vaguely northern still, but the vintage’s
warmth certainly moves the concept south. Cherry, tobacco, grappa,
garrigue./ Ripe and rich. Mild acidity for its AC, but the wine
is framed and balanced by alcohol and tannin. Stylistically, it
certainly empathizes with the 03 red burgundies. Easily the ripest
and biggest Sancerre rouge I’ve tasted. 17.0+. wt011106-12. 04
COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES, DOMAINE STE. ANNE
- (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) More restraint than shown in the 03 at
Wine Club Monday. Brilliant floral perfume and potpourri of aromatic
overtones. Lovely, penetrating, classic blue fruits of Ste. Anne./
Grip, garrigue, purity, and form of Ste. Anne. Grace, charm, and
confidence. Chewy, fine-grained tannins. Nice extract. Super. Like
the CdR, it reminds me of the great 78. 16.6+. wt011106-13. 04
COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES CUVEE NOTRE DAME DES CELLETTES, DOMAINE
STE. ANNE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) More
intense and concentrated. Bigger. Loaded. Lots in reserve here./
All the attributes of the former plus more of each. Blacker: more
pitch, black pepper, brandied plums. Yow! 16.9+. wt011106-14. 04
SAINT GERVAIS COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES, DOMAINE STE. ANNE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Riper and more powerful still.
Vanilla, nuts, peels, garrigue. Very ripe, dark fruit. A hearty
wine./ Cherry, raspberry, tar, spice, straw. Rich, full, strong.
Rather aggressive tannin and power still. Time should tame it. 16.7++. wt011106-15. 04
VACQUEYRAS, DOMAINE DU GRAND PRIEUR -
(FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Yes, dark and dense and reductive compared
to the Soleiade and definitely compared to the Grand Prieur CdR.
Big and backward. Garrigue, lavender, cedar, mineral dust, anise.
Thoroughly Vacqueyras. Wow! This is the CdR condensed. A complete
Vacqueyras package./ Yes, full and textured to the extent expected
of the appellation. Well balanced. Distinctive, elegant, tremendous.
Total potential of the 78 style. 16.8++. wt011106-16. 04
GOATS DO ROAM BORED DOE - (SOUTH AFRICA)
Dense fruit, very dense. The Bordeaux varietals show. And Bordeaux
earth and tobacco, like a Graves./ Sweet berry fruit and good oak
support. Lots of substance. Polished and nicely crafted. 15.6.
Wednesday, January 4, 2006 wt010406-01. E.
BARNAUT BOUZY GRAND CRU ROSE AUTHENTIQUE BRUT CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) Young, firm, well-extracted red fruit nose.
Subtle strawberry and cream aromas. Biscuity bottle bouquet./ Rich,
fat, nutty. Again, showing good en tirage aging. Paradoxically,
it’s both tight and well-bouqueted. Authoritative, big, with almost
a red-wine demeanor. Opens nicely as it warms and airs. Take to
the table. 17.3. wt010406-02. 05
SANTA JULIA MENDOZA TORRONTES - (ARGENTINA)
Intensely fragrant and very pure. Great clarity of perfume. Cool,
almost brittle. Citrus and other tropical fruits and flowers, loquat./
Good acidity and that welcome torrontes yin-yang of light viscosity
and astringency. 16.1+. wt010406-03. 04
MCMANIS FAMILY RIVER JUNCTION VIOGNIER
- (U.S.) Lush and exotic. Mellow, soft, floral. Yellow fruits, flowers,
touch of grain. True to varietal./ Quite full and warm on the palate.
Some waxiness and astringency as is proper. A right proper viognier
profile. 15.0. wt010406-04. 04
TOHU UNOAKED GISBORNE CHARDONNAY - (NEW
ZEALAND) Good clean fun. Bright, spirited, fruity, pleasant./ Chablis-like
form, with the riper NZ fruit flavors (pear, peach). Touch of anise.
15.1. wt010406-05. 05
YALUMBA SOUTH AUSTRALIA RIESLING - (AUSTRALIA)

Bright yellow fruits, minerals, talc. Delicate charm. Food-worthy.
15.5. wt010406-07. 03
PINOT GRIS RESERVE, FERNAND ENGEL - (FRANCE

gris./ Flavors confirm and add apple and peach to the set. Aroma
was more of hazelnut, flavor of almond. Nice creamy texture of pinot
gris. Advanced like the pinot blanc–that’s 03. 15.8. wt010406-08. 02
RIESLING RESERVE, FERNAND ENGEL - (FRANCE
ALSACE) Good race and edelfirne development. Elegant, sleek, discreet,
charming. Good form. Just the right style and stage for an 02./
Yes, racy. Good acidity and extract of the vintage. Real flair.
Clinging aftertaste. A good dinner wine now. 15.9. wt010406-09. 02
GEWURZTRAMINER RESERVE, FERNAND ENGEL
- (FRANCE ALSACE) Intense gewurz aroma of rose, orange peel, spice,
and lychee. Good thickness. Good 02 extract for grip and form./
Thick, rich, and strong. Has the alcohol, glycerol, and astringency
for a nice, typical gewurz balance. Bargain price for Alsace gewurz.
Given that all four of these Engels are priced the same, I know
which one I’d recommend the highest. 16.4. wt010406-10. 04
MORGON GRAND CRU, GEORGES DUBOEUF - (FRANCE
BURGUNDY) Fine, fresh, alert, enticingly Morgon black cherry fruit.

MORGON GRAND CRU JEAN DESCOMBES, GEORGES DUBOEUF - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) More reticent, more serious. Deep
and nicely textured. Has real class, breed. Black cherry and blackberry
aromas./ Full bodied and full textured as a Morgon ought to be.
Real density, extract, depth, and length. My how nicely these 04s
are filling out! Very useful bridge vintage now. Very well liked
by the group. 16.9. wt010406-12. 03
FLEURIE GRAND CRU PRESTIGE, GEORGES DUBOEUF
- (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Ripe and perfumed. Loaded. Cherry, cherry pie,
kirsch. Nice light oak touch adds complexity. Immense concentration
and richness of 03./ Ripe, concentrated, loaded. Again, the oak
makes a welcome addition. Huge, powerful, condensed gamay. 17.2. wt010406-13. 03
CHATEAU RECOUGNE, BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR -
(FRANCE BORDEAUX) Huge, rich, and complete claret. The saturation
and body of 03. I hadn’t expected this at the regional-appellation
level./ Full flavored. Saturated with fruit. Compact berry core
of eau-de-vie concentration. Good backbone. No oak necessary for
complete satisfaction. Very well liked by the group. 16.4. wt010406-14. 01
FORT SIMON ANNA SIMON MERLOT-PINOTAGE
- (SOUTH AFRICA) Warm, burly, and generous, if a bit leathery. Yes,
there’s plenty of rich fruit./ Again, richly fruity. The leather
isn’t too much. A tasty little value for current drinking. 14.9 wt010406-15. 00
FORT SIMON MERLOT - (SOUTH AFRICA) Showing
more age, more animal. Heavy, earthy, oaky. Not bad./ Dry and aging.
Pretty well balanced, if a little heavy to the animal side. Milk
chocolate nuance. OK for current drinking. 14.7. wt010406-16. E.
BARNAUT BOUZY GRAND CRU CUVEE DOUCEUR SEC CHAMPAGNE - (SPARKLING) Great buttercream cake frosting nose appropriate
to a sec champagne. Lots of autolysis bouquet for a sec (they’re

And in biscuity bottle bouquet too. Great sec. 17.1. wt010406-17. OSBORNE
OLOROSO DULCE CREAM SHERRY - (FORTIFIED)
Thick. Heavy in PX but not to maple-syrup extreme. Cookie dough,
honey, date, and nut cream. The alcohol cools it nicely. Relatively
young, but not pasty. Strong on walnut–a good oloroso feature./
The alcohol is cooling on the palate too. Keeps the wine from being
sticky. Rich and mouth-filling, with some sophistication of age.
A bargain. 16.2.
