Wider range of fruits and more voluptuousness and intensity. Melon, peach, and tropical stuff like mango. 03 speaking. And good acidity for 03. Great depth. Wow! Is this exuberant and intense! Definition of yum. 16.9.
Price each (at time of tasting) $14.99

WT022708-02. 03 HATTENHEIMER NUSSBRUNNEN RIESLING KABINETT, VON SIMMERN - (GERMANY) Another fabulous example of reductive winemaking from von Simmern. Especially important here due to the extreme ripeness of the 03 vintage. Wonderful floral assets. Tulip, peony. Plus peach and tropical fruits./ Full, fabulous, intense, pure, fully extracted. Fine concentration, minerality, acid support. Peach, green apple, bergamot. Totally generous. 17.5.

WT022708-04. 02 NIERSTEINER PETTENTHAL RIESLING KABINETT, J&HA STRUB - (GERMANY) Tight, refined Pettenthal style. Cool, racy minerals and flowers./ Shows good bouquet development while retaining floral freshness. Deep, sweet, floral flavors. Superior quality. 16.8.

Wonderfully plump./ Wow! This is auslese, not kabinett. Rich, intense, and thick. Great acidity too. Always impressive, this is the best it’s tasted. 17.5.
Price each (at time of tasting) $14.99

WT022708-06. 01 ZREKSZARDI CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MARIKA - (HUNGARY) Ripe, sweet, and pure fruited. A woody sense too–surprise. Lively and appealing./ Sweet and wholesale. Young and fresh yet. Again, that woody sense. Oak spices, flowers, dark fruits, tobacco. High-strung claret notions. Good choice for chicken paprikash. 15.6.
Price each (at time of tasting) $5.99

WT022708-07. 05 CHIANTI, FATTORIA LE CASELLE - (ITALY) Fresh fruit and flower. Very pretty and fine 05. Dried citrus and cherry sangiovese aromas./ Elegant again, with plenty of fullness and richness besides. Bramble, peppercorn, zesty spices. Fine tannins. The most accomplished vintage of this cuvee I’ve tasted. Good value. 16.1.
Price each (at time of tasting) $12.99

WT022708-08. 06 SICILIA NERO D’AVOLA, CUSUMANO - (ITALY) Deep and pure black cherry, blackberry, and licorice. Creamy-rich and concentrated fruit. This writes the book on nero d’avola./ Again, classic nero. Rich, ripe, powerful, fleshy, savory. Great extract, acid, tannin. Generosity and balance. Commands attention. Complete picture. 16.3+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $11.99

WT022708-09. 05 BARBERA D’ASTI SUPERIORE LE ORME, MICHELE CHIARLO - (ITALY) Lovely barbera fruit of the elegant Asti style. 05 fruit emphasis, clarity, purity. Cherry and tar./ Intense in flavor, silky in texture--it’s Asti, not Alba. Lovely acidity. Certainly food-worthy. 16.2.
Price each (at time of tasting) $13.99

WT022708-10. 04 DOLCETTO DI DOGLIANI SURI SETTEZONA MADONNA DELLE GRAZIO, ALDO MARENCO - (ITALY) Riper than the Bric we tasted last month. Spicy and open knit. Full, ripe cherry, plum, chocolate, and hint of pumpkin./ Ripe and powerful. Polished and generous. Youthfully muscular. Very tannic. Needs a couple of years to complete the picture. 16.0+.

WT0220-01. 06 CATALUNYA MACABEO-CHARDONNAY, RAMON ROQUETA - (SPAIN) This has both the apple-citrus aromatics and the bulk of chardonnay coupled with the lightly floral airs of macabeo. In harmony./ Apple and flowers even more prominent on the palate. Plus nut hearts and husks. The crisp bite of 06 northern Spain whites. Some lemon and peel tartness and astringency. Full textured--almost coarse-textured when drunk brut, but likely to settle in and be appreciated with the right food choices. 15.1.
Price each (at time of tasting) $8.99

WT0220-02. 06 RUTHERFORD RANCH NAPA VALLEY CHARDONNAY - (U.S.) 06 fresh and fuzzy fruit that I love so much in chardonnays this vintage. That friendly, inviting 06 style. Aromatic apples and light oak./ Nice oak caramel and chardonnay apple flavors. Like Rutherford Ranch’s cabernets, this is cleverly crafted to deliver the same goods as wines costing twice the price. Fully deserving its Napa Valley appellation. 16.3.
Price each (at time of tasting) $11.99

WT0220-03. 02 TRITTENHEIMER ALTARCHEN RIESLING KABINETT, ERNST CLUSSERATH - (GERMANY) Hallmark Trittenheimer, still remarkably fresh. Fluffy, floral airs of apple and blossom. That classic Trittenheimer levity./ Yes, very juicy in the 02 style. The apple and flowers echo on the palate. Wonderful intensity, piquancy. At a lovely stage. Textbook Trittenheim kabinett. The group was hugely impressed. 17.0.
Price each (at time of tasting) $11.04

WT0220-04. 02 MUNSTERER RHEINBERG RIESLING KABINETT, KRUGER-RUMPF - (GERMANY) Fine, deep, and soil inflected. Calm and elegant. A lovely example of reductive winemaking, which gives form and vitality to a riesling from a community better known for mild, earthy wines./ Super Nahe riesling that flashes some of the brilliance of a Donnhoff wine. Good body and vigor. There’s soft Munsterer fruit but also great acidity and juiciness. Some attractive bouquet development too. Drinking beautifully. The group loved this one as well. 16.8.
Price each (at time of tasting) $13.59

WT0220-05. 02 PFALZ RIESLING BIRD LABEL, LINGENFELDER - (GERMANY) More development here. Cool, citrusy, juicy Lingenfelder style of Pfalz riesling. Undercurrent of mango and something tonic too, and that’s attractive. Some edelfirne bouquet development./ Yes, even more signs of maturity on the palate. Definite spruce like leaning, right down to the pitch and astringency. I like this, but I like all the other Germans better. However, this was popular with the group. 16.1.
Price each (at time of tasting) $11.04

WT0220-06. 02 DEIDESHEIMER PARADIESGARTEN RIESLING KABINETT, VON BASSERMANN-JORDAN - (GERMANY) Oh, my god! Here’s the kabinett champion! Fresh and large. Even statuesque. Deep, serious, satiny, voluminous./ Large-scaled, large-volume, serious indeed. Round and juicy peach and honey impressions. Polished to a silky sheen too. Gads! Such class! Well liked by the group. 17.5.
Price each (at time of tasting) $15.29

WT0220-07. 06 CATALUNYA CABERNET SAUVIGNON ROSADO, RAMON ROQUETA - (SPAIN) Great cabernet blackberry and cassis–a real cabernet sauvignon rose nose, cool and clearly varietal. That nice cabernet cedar touch too./ Palate adds cranberry and cherry. Some cabernet astringency but no tannin to speak of. Dry but not austere. Eminently mealworthy. This needs no sweetening because it’s not at all tart or lean like some Bordeaux roses. Vintage raciness. 16.2.
Price each (at time of tasting) $8.99

WT0220-08. 06 CATALUNYA TEMPRANILLO ULL DE LLEBRE, RAMON ROQUETA - (SPAIN) Ull de llebre is the Catalan name for tempranillo. Eye of the rabbit. Sweet and succulent berry fruit. Lovely, balanced presentation, the fruit complete, oak seasoning very subtle./ Good acid, balance. Plenty of fruit volume and intensity. Fine tannin, nice texture. Yes! Well superior to the 05 tasted in fall. More good things to come. 16.3+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $8.99

WT0220-09. 03 CATALUNYA CRIANZA, RAMON ROQUETA - (SPAIN) 70% tempranillo, 30% cabernet sauvignon. Fine oak and time in oak. Vanilla and spices. Sweet berry fruit. That welcome fruit-oak complement of crianza./ Oak more dominant on palate, but not nearly so much so as last fall. Some grip of oak tannin still. No 03 heat or overripe though–cool Catalonia speaks. Needs time. 16.2++.
Price each (at time of tasting) $10.99

WT0220-10. 03 CATALUNYA RESERVA, RAMON ROQUETA - (SPAIN) 70% tempranillo, 30% cabernet sauvignon. The oak is more absorbed here. More bouquet, more mellowness from time in barrel. I suspect more seasoned barrels here, or the wine’s constitution is stouter and has more ability to take the oak. Again, no 03 heat./ Smooth textured. Very fine tannin. Will expound on its bouquet attributes with additional time in bottle. Fine value. 16.7+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $11.99

WT0220-11. 04 VAUCLUSE, CULTURE DU SUD - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Cool, compact 04 fruit. Plum, spices, and game./ Yes, it’s firm, reductive, still gripping. A proper 04 at this stage. A good value for the patient. 14.8++.
Price each (at time of tasting) $7.99

WT0220-12. 03 COTES DU LUBERON LE CHATAIGNIER DOMAINE DE LA CITADELLE, ROUSSET-BOUARD - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Rich, ripe fruit, peel extracts, and dark chocolate./ Ripe, sweet, and strong, like rum cake. Some warm-spice and wood attributes. And a lot of tannin yet too. 15.2+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $12.99

WT0220-13. 03 COTES DU RHONE PREMIER TERROIR, CHATEAU BEAUCHENE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Sweet and open, with southern vigor and 03 richness. Roasted meat, peppercorns and other spices./ Soft, candied fruits and flowers. Warm, rich, burly, well stuffed. Dark fruits and game. Some tannin yet. 15.6+.

Price each (at time of tasting) $11.99

WT0220-15. 03 NAPA RIDGE NAPA VALLEY SYRAH - (U.S.) Smooth and simple. Some nice oak. No varietal character to speak of./ Yes, good oak, good body, good red fruit. A satisfying mouthful of red wine for food. Again, a better showing than at the TG affair. 15.8+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $11.99

WT0220-16. 02 SCHARZHOFBERG RIESLING SPATLESE, VON HOVEL - (GERMANY) Fresh and lovely, elegant and well scented fruit perfume, with some attractive bouquet development too. Great 02 extract. Billowing and full bouqueted indeed./ Full juice and extract of 02. Good grip. Good development. Ideal balance of sweetness, acidity, extract. Wow! Intense! Well liked by the group. 17.1.
Price each (at time of tasting) $18.99

WT0220-17. 02 UNGSTEINER HERRENBERG RIESLING SPATLESE, KURT DARTING - (GERMANY) Nicely developed honey and granola Pfalz riesling attributes. Peach-apricot and nut cream too. Plenty of freshness yet. Autumnal shades./ Sweet honey and grains flavors, plus a positive medicinal or tonic quality. Intense and fine. Well liked by the group. 17.8+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $15.29

WT0220-18. 04 SAWYER RUTHERFORD MERLOT - (U.S.) 04 sweet fruit nicely balanced with generous oak qualities./ Chewy tannins. The palate is large and tough. One of the biggest, baddest Napa merlots I’ve encountered. Thinks it’s a cabernet. Give it time. 16.4+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $39.99

WT0220-19. 04 SAWYER BRADFORD MERITAGE RUTHERFORD RED - (U.S.) A little easier approach. Very pretty oak and fruit qualities./ Which echo on the palate. Both oak and fruit tannins, neither one obtrusive. Chewy texture. 16.2+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $44.99

WT0220-20. 04 SAWYER RUTHERFORD CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S.) Great blackberry-black currant cabernet sauvignon nose. Plenty of Napa class. Power too./ Wow! Classic Rutherford amplitude, class, style. Fine tannin. A beauty. My clear favorite of the three. 17.2+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $47.99

WT021308-01. 06 CHATEAU ROQUEFORT, BORDEAUX SAUVIGNON-SEMILLON - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) Full wax, apple, melon, and fig semillon basis. Bright sauvignon citrus highlights./ Juicy, plump, delicious, succulent. The way to make a semillon white Bordeaux–no earth, sulphur sponge, wet plaster, funk. Nice sauvignon acidity, lift. This is just so lip-smackin’ good I want to drink glass after glass. 16.4.
Price each (at time of tasting) $12.99

WT021308-02. 06 CHATEAU THIEULEY, BORDEAUX SAUVIGNON-SEMILLON - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) Not so eager, so open hearted. More compact, framed. More sauvignon and less semillon, it seems. Some sense of wood, but no wood really. More citrus peel than the former./ Yes, juicy citrus peel and some botanical complications. Piquant, tensile, tightly wound. Great form. They really know how to make wine here. Of course, the owner is a professor of winegrowing. 16.2+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $14.99

WT021308-03. 02 NIERSTEINER KRANZBERG RIESLING KABINETT, FRANZ-KARL SCHMITT - (GERMANY) This has opened nicely with time. It was austere, even shrill, when it was young. Florals, peach, melon. Nice./ Juicy, flavorful. Quince and kumquat. Nut and melon. Comfortable in its development. Very useful at the table. 15.8.
Price each (at time of tasting) $10.19

Price each (at time of tasting) $15.29

WT021308-07. 06 DOLCETTO DI OVARDA ROCCO ROSSO, LA SLINA - (ITALY) Intense, dark fruit. Deep red currant and floral aromas. Very rich and bright and spicy and vigorous./ Chewy extract and tannin. Tight, tart, lively, tangy. Vital, insistent, loaded. Needs time, maybe 2-3 years. Whatever happened to dolcettos that are drinkable in youth? Do the Italians keep them for themselves? 16.1+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $11.99

WT021308-08. 03 MINERVOIS, DOMAINE DE LA TOUR BOISEE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Lovely. 03 ripeness and good, dark material and grip. Warm fruit, spices, flowers./ Rich, ripe, fruity, floral, powerful.     Price each (at time of tasting) $7.99

WT021308-09. 05 CHATEAU ROQUEFORT, BORDEAUX MERLOT-CABERNET - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) Oh, my is this pretty, pretty. Bright, bountiful, and beautiful fruit of 05, some floral highlights, and a dab of oak intricacy./ Yes, the wood and time in barrel is even more expressive on the palate. Some chewy wood tannin too. And generous fruit to counter. The nose is so enticing, but the palate says keep me awhile. 16.0+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $13.99

WT021308-10. 05 CHATEAU THIEULEY, BORDEAUX MERLOT-CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) This is pretty too. That 05 quality and just a glint of oak, discreet and well integrated./ Fine and juicy fruit with elegant claret lines. Hint of cocoa. Very fine tannin. One of the best Thieuley rouges I’ve tasted. Fine. 16.3+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $16.99

WT021308-11. 05 CHATEAU DE CASSANA, HAUT MEDOC - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) Autet @Saint Sauveur. The Chateau was founded in 2003. And there’s some carmenere in the vineyard! A beauty. Stresses cabernet fruit with clarity and elegance and 05 stylishness and quality. Wow!/ Yes, cabernet is certainly in the lead here. Cabernet form and darkness lending classic Haut Medoc lines. Well fashioned and lovely. A Chateau to follow. 16.5+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $18.99

WT021308-12. 05 CHATEAU HAUT BEAUSEJOUR CRU BOURGEOIS, SAINT ESTEPHE - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) I was impressed by this estate’s achievement in 04, aided by new oak sophistication. Oak is in evidence here too–fine oak. And the fruit is more substantial, ripe, and wholesome in 05 versus 04. Wow! This is a fabulous nose./ Indeed, both oak and fruit are fine, the fruit really leading the way. Certainly a product of Saint Estephe gravel rather than clay. Fine wine. 16.8+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $26.99

WT021308-13. 05 CHATEAU DE PEZ, CRU BOURGEOIS EXCEPTIONNEL, SAINT ESTEPHE - (FRANCE BORDEAUX) Well, it’s compact, tough, and tight as always. But the fruit is clear and brilliant, up to 05 standards. And there’s more oak complexity than in the old days, which was reflected in the excellent 02 also./ Fine form of de Pez and fruit beauty of 05. Harmonious, confident, comfortable. Rich, polished, reserved. Well built, well bred. Should age very long and gracefully. 17.1++.
Price each (at time of tasting) $42.99

WT021308-14. 06 L DE LYETH SONOMA ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) Heavy Bottle Award. The usual Lyeth reliability shows in the first zinfandel we’ve seen from Lyeth. Kola and blackberry aromas./ And flavors. Ripe fruit and good warmth and power as usual here. Nothing too ambitious. Just useful and fun. 15.5.
Price each (at time of tasting) $12.99

WT021308-15. 04 RENWOOD GRANDMERE AMADOR ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) Whoa! Big step up! 16% alcohol for starters. It’s big and rich and woody and rangy. But there’s a sense of restraint, elegance, and style too. It’s not out of control. Blackberry, vanilla, coconut, nutmeg. Fabulous complexity./ Big, black, intense berry and tar. Essential strength and concentration. One big Grandmutha. And the price is very reasonable for the quality, as zinfandels go these days. Seems this used to sell for more. Lovely, accomplished. Total zin-ality. 17.8+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $26.99

WT021308-16. 03 RENWOOD JACK RABBIT FLAT AMADOR ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) This suffers a little from order, though being more expensive, I can see the numbering strategy. Trouble is, it’s ONLY 15% alcohol, so seems a little timid after the former. Jammy, singed, dense, black./ Softer and rounder, showing the extra year’s aging and the vintage accessibility. Spicy oak and warm spices. Sweet. Come hither. Fine pair, and the ones at January’s Tasters Guiild event were fine too. Renwood impresses. 17.4+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $31.99

Rich, fleshy, supple./ Full, sweet, strong presence. Round, soft, flattering 06 fruit. A chardonnay that strives for total charm and seductiveness. A success; the complete package. Better than the 05. 16.8.
Price each (at time of tasting) $16.99

WT020608-06. 06 SHENANDOAH VINEYARDS AMADOR WHITE ZINFANDEL - (U.S.) Peach and strawberry. Fresh still. Sweet and alluring nose./ The palate confirms all of this but in an slightly diluted manner. Tails off at the end. Time for a new vintage. 15.0-.

Large and hearty, but also very cabernet compact./ Charry oak and concentrated fruit. That extra dose of cabernet tannin versus the above wine. 16.2++.
Price each (at time of tasting) $25.99

WT020608-12. 05 ESTREMADURA RESERVA, QUINTA DE CHOCAPALHA - (PORTUGAL) This is special. Very aromatic. There are floral extras that set this apart from the other two. Forgot to make a comparison of the grape varieties here and in the first. Dense, ripe berry and cherry fruit, oak, time in oak mellowness, chocolate./ Like the others, plenty of new oak, plenty of extract and tannin. The extra aromatic qualities echo on the palate. This is more complex, benefitting from more time in barrel. But it too needs more time in bottle. 16.8+.
