In fact, lemon ice cream flavor. Lots of wood vanillin. Not as brutal on the palate. The sweetness and softness coats the wood and the alcohol. Less burn, less roughness. The fruit shows stamina. 14.5.

wt083105-04. 04 COTES DU RHONE FUTS DE CHENE BLANC (VIOGNIER), CHATEAU BEAUCHENE - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) The oak’s still a bit on top, but viognier peach, pear, melon, mango, and flowers characteristics are fully evident. Good crispness./ Feels and flavors of oak and viognier. Some oak tannin. Viognier viscosity in the middle and astringency at the back. Sassy, mineraly, assertive, and quite wonderful. Full and flavorful bargain with broad applications. 15.6.
Price each (at time of tasting) $6.49

wt083105-11. 03 UMBRIA MERLOT PESANO, FALESCO - (ITALY) Sweet merlot cherry and tea. Nice oak spices. Raspberry note too. And plum and cocoa. Very brightly focused fruit and oak./ The merlot fruit is ripe but not too ripe. And the oak is spicy and properly proportioned. Great acidity here. Almost as neatly structured as the 01, but a little plumper and sweeter and softer thanks to the warmth of the vintage. Dense, polished, handsome, serious. Craftsmanlike in a modern setting. 16.2.
Price each (at time of tasting) $14.99

wt083105-12. 03 BOLGHERI, CAMPO AL MARE - (ITALY) 60% merlot, 20% each cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc - Suggests class and sophistication from the start. Depth and concentration too. Fine French oak. This is all about breed, discretion, finesse./ Fine and racy, with very, very fine-grained tannins. Lovely fruit presented in a dignified manner. Noble to the core. The race of a grand cru claret. Everyone agreed this was the class of the tasting and worth the price. Cheap by Bolgheri (Ornellaia, Sassacaia) standards, really. 17.6+.

Engaging floral nuances. Classic. An old trouper. Not a bit sweet or modern./ Yes, dry, firm-centered, traditional Cairanne. wt082405-01. 04 MONTES RESERVE CURICO VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC - (CHILE) High toned, racy, zesty lemon-lime and grassy aroma. Steely edge. Ripe pear and vanilla (from oak or ripeness?)/ Bright, exuberant, tangy, pungent. Passion fruit, orange peel, grass, spices. Again, I sense some barrel aging. A reserve style, a mealtime style.     Price each (at time of tasting) $19.99

wt082405-03. 03 MACON CHARDONNAY, DOMAINE TALMARD - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Ripe apple, quince, citrus, and grains. Boy, I would swear up and down that this was barrel aged. But it wasn’t. Full, ripe, powerful, toasty. I guess it’s the warmth of the vintage, the sun-tanned grape peels, that give this woody impression./ Again, toasty. Broiled peach, orange. Roasted grains. Very powerful. Ripeness foiled by a racy minerality. 15.6.
Price each (at time of tasting) $11.99

wt082405-04. 04 ERBACHER HONIGBERG RIESLING, VON ERBACH liter - (GERMANY) Fresh, with that 04 malic cleanness, crispness, lift, and brace. wt082405-05. 03 CLOS DU BOIS SONOMA PINOT NOIR - (U.S.) Good, deep-woven, toasty oak and sweet cherry fruit. Dark-toned. A big improvement over the oak treatment of earlier vintages. The oak used to sit on top, superficial and glossy, and put a lid on the fruit. Now they work in tandem, and both run deep./ Sweet oak and fruit. Cherry, tea, milk chocolate. The oak contributions are admirably complex, featuring both caramel and brown spices. This is good stuff. 16.0.
Price each (at time of tasting) $15.99

wt082405-06. 03 BOURGOGNE SAINT VINCENT, VINCENT GIRARDIN - (FRANCE BURGUNDY) Opens to a really full, ripe, roasted, rustic, powerful, warm-vintage Bourgogne. Big, dense, stern. A grappler. wt082405-07. 04 MONTES RESERVE COLCHAGUA VALLEY MERLOT - (CHILE) A lot of vanilla oak and full, sweet merlot cherry and herbed tea. Demonstrative Montes red-wine styling. Bright fruit delineation spells good acidity too. There’s style and charm as well as bombast./ Yes, for all the fruit sweetness, the acidity is up to the task. Most flavorful, rangy, powerful, and generous. Cherry, blueberry, black raspberry, tea, and chocolate. Really delivers for the price. 16.0.
Price each (at time of tasting) $7.99

wt082405-08. 02 COSTIERES DE NIMES LASIRA, VIEILLE FERME - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) At a reductive stage yet. Will reward airing and aging. Certainly shows its 75% syrah content. Very dark syrah berry fruit./ Reduction still pinches the palate a bit. Nonetheless, it’s evident that there’s plenty of sound and ripe enough fruit here. No sense of the rot that plagued so many 02s. Good triage made. Medium bodied–commendable in 02. A right decent palate. Now, give it time to throw off its reduction, and you’ll have a bargain. 14.0+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $6.49

wt082405-09. 01 CAMPO DE BORJA CRIANZA MOSEN CLETO, ARAGONA - (SPAIN) Rich in dried cherry and strawberry aromas. Shows the breadth, mellowness, and bouquet development of a wine kept long in cask. A rich and nicely mature crianza that retains good fruit yet shows barrel-aged complexity at the same time. As a good crianza should./ Rich and commendably well balanced. Lively, charming, nicely focused fruit flavors. Great acidity and the proper viscosity of a good, cask-aged Spanish red. Super bargain. The talk of the tasting. 16.0.
Price each (at time of tasting) $6.29

wt082405-10. 01 RIOJA CUVEE ESPECIAL, SIERRA CANTABRIA - (SPAIN) Heaps of new-oak complexity: vanilla, toast, toffee, incense, Asian spices. Black fruits galore, and elegant wildflower highlights. wt082405-11. 01 CAMARADERIE WASHINGTON CABERNET SAUVIGNON - (U.S.) Pac NW cool, firm, dark cabernet sauvignon. The oak is dark and charry too. Big, concentrated, and powerful cabernet. Deep-seated brett tones that are positive and complexing./ Ripe, almost dried, currant cabernet fruit. Massive and muscular. The tannins are still granular and imposing. Would appreciate more bottle age. 16.4+.
Price each (at time of tasting) $23.99

wt082405-12. 03 HMR REX GOLIATH CALIFORNIA SHIRAZ - (U.S.) Rich in seductive, brown-spice and toffee oak notes. Rich in genuine syrah fruit character too./ Yes, a lot of vanilla and oak spices.     Price each (at time of tasting) $16.99

wt082405-14. 03 RASTEAU COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES, CHATEAU DU TRIGNON - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Dark, powerful, more sullen. With airing some peppercorn and garrigue spices come through. Then blackberry and bacon. Lots of peel extracts. Big guns potential. A proper Rasteau but way too young now./ Big volume, power, mass, extract, ambition. But very miserly at present. Really clamps down on the palate. 16.4++.
Price each (at time of tasting) $18.99

wt082405-15. 03 GIGONDAS, CHATEAU DU TRIGNON - (FRANCE MEDITERRANEAN) Sweet, ripe, and full of garrigue like the Sablet. Only much more powerful. I mean, really Gigondas powerful. Crisp, lithe citrus peel piquance of Bordeaux sauvignon blanc too. Underlying mineral savor. Well crafted./ Again, I detect a light touch of oak. It’s nice. Lots of citrus and peel. 03 lush, but it’s controlled by adequate acidity and the wine’s strength. Well textured, bright, refined, stylish. You have a master winemaker here–a professor. 16.3.

wt081005-11. 03 BARBERA D’ALBA TRE VIGNE, VIETTI - (ITALY) Fabulous oak aromatics. But the real beauty of the wine is the strength and quality of the cherry-cassis fruit statement, which is not subordinate to the oak. You get both beautiful pictures, in harmony, in one package. The barbera is real: dark, zesty, properly edgy. The overall picture is big, strapping, deep, reserved./ Again, great oak finesse and clear and lovely barbera fruit statement.
