* 1. 05 CHATEAU LA LAUZETTE DECLERCQ, LISTRAC
         17.99 each; 211.50 case of 12

At Tasters Guild 6/16: Gets softer and more accommodating as the months pass. Was so stiff on the nose when it first arrived. Some attractive oak to complement the fruit, which is nicely forthcoming and 05 elegant. Firmer on the palate though. Ample, meaty. Going places. 91+/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

* 2. 05 CHATEAU CANTENAC, GRAND CRU, SAINT EMILION
         26.99 each; 317.50 case of 12

How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

* 3. 05 CHATEAU BELLEVUE VIEILLES VIGNES, COTES DE CASTILLON
         17.99 each; 211.50 case of 12

The Castillon slope is an eastern extension of Saint Emilion’s. ‘ Garagistes’ are moving in here with stunning results. Just as classy as at the April trade show...no, more classy. Grand Cru oak beauty and range. Cedar, sandalwood, all kinds of good stuff. Intense, deep, ample, rangy. A Super Castillon going after Grand Cru Saint Emilion. 93+/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

* 4. 05 CHATEAU HAUT MONDAIN, BORDEAUX
         7.99 each; 93.95 case of 12

Le Hauts de Palette @Beguey. Lovely petit claret set of tea, herbs, bell pepper, and cassis./ Pepper and cassis confirmed. No oak evident. Dry, with good acidity. Plenty of textural interest. Long aftertaste. Needn’t be cellared long. Good with food now. And a good value. 89+/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

* 5. 05 CAHORS, CLOS LA COUTALE
         13.49 each; 158.50 case of 12

80% malbec, 20% merlot. Better than the 04. Reflects the fruit quality and fulfillment of 05. Cherry, tar, anise, peppercorn, all. 91+/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

BORDEAUX - WHITE

* 6. 07 COTES DE GASCOGNE BLANC, DOMAINE DES CASSAGNOLES
         7.49 each; 87.95 case of 12

Starts out on the shy side, but, later, plenty of fruit surges forth. Green apple, melon, orange peel, stone, spice./ The palate shows more richness from the get-go yet remains well measured, well delineated. This is really starting to deliver now. Sassy, stimulating edginess. Great texture. Aftertaste sings of pear and tangerine. 90+/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

* 7. 05 PACHERENC DU VIC BILH SEC LES JARDINS BOUSCASSE, ALAIN BRUMONT
         12.79 each; 149.95 case of 12

Intense aromas of dusky peach, quince, and thyme. Boy, that’s got grip and tingle. Full of extract. Palpable nose. Swells the nostrils./ Full bodied. Stony, etched, and vigorous. Intriguing, distinctive, and fine expression of the mansengs and other white grape varieties unique to the Pyrenees foothills. 91/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

LOIRE

* 8. 07 MUSCADET SEVRE ET MAINE SUR LIE, CHATEAU LA CARIZIERE
         10.99 each; 129.50 case of 12

Brisk and fresh and good green pear and flowers and botanicals. Deeply textured. Rich. Blossoms fully with airing. Linden./ Great acidity. I mean, Wow! More vigor and less tenderness than the norm. The flavor range and intensity just grow and grow as the wine warms and airs. Totally rewarding. Well liked by the group. 91/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

* 9. 06 SAUMUR BLANC RESERVE DES VIGNERONS, CAVE DE SAUMUR
         9.39 each; 109.95 case of 12

All chenin blanc. Not a thick chenin; rather, lithe and uplifting. Fine Saumur limestone-born chenin clarity. Spiced apple highlight./ Fresh acidity. Crisp and classic. This is better than the cooperative Saumur blanc we used to get years back. May be the same co-op, but better winemaking today. Nice to see a typical wine of the region, not one that a winemaker has manipulated to make it ‘bigger’. This fully reveals its unique terroir. Well liked by the group. 90/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

* 10. 06 SANCERRE, ETIENNE DAULNY
         16.99 each; 199.95 case of 12

Yes, full, fresh, alert, ideal. Bright, tangy, stylish, aromatic. Lots of race, flair, zing. Citrus, minerals, white pepper./ Rich, suave texture. Just the right amounts and proportions of acidity and plumpness that 06s seem to be delivering. Fresh, floral airs. Lively and refreshing gooseberry cut and crunch. Long, juicy aftertaste. Come hither qualities. 92/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

ALSACE

* 11. 04 RIESLING MUSCHELKALCK, DOMAINE LOEW
         8.49 each; 99.95 case of 12

Some spruce aromas of mature riesling. A noble, refined presentation. Crispness and fruit clarity of 04. Full of stony vigor./ Palate confirms the fine 04 styling with its racy acidity and good extract grip. A large wine, a full-scaled Alsace riesling that will prove very useful at the dinner table. Well priced. 90/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

         23.99 each; 281.95 case of 12

* 13. 04 MARANGES LA FUSSIERE PREMIER CRU, BERNARD MOREY
         19.99 each; 234.95 case of 12

Maranges is at the southern tip of the Cote d’Or. Racy, spicy swarthy fruit of 04. With airing, it opens to a soft and savory array of plum, blackberry, and mixed berries that is stellar. / Meat and mushroom pinot flavors in addition to the fat and sweet Morey fruit. Good Morey power and framing. Full-bodied. Still some tightness and tartness in the 04 mode. That will diminish. Enjoyed by the group. 91+/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

         7.69 each; 89.95 case of 12

Parker 89+: ‘Offers aromas reminiscent of waxy black cherries dusted with violet petals. Juicy and satin-textured, it is packed with red as well as black cherries, blueberries, flowers, and spices. Within a year, this effort may well merit an outstanding score given its delightful concentration and depth. Drink it between 2007 and 2011.’ SUPPLIER’S CLEARANCE SPECIAL; LIST PRICE: $13.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

* 16. 05 MOULIN A VENT GRAND CRU OAK AGED, GEORGES DUBOEUF
         9.99 each; 117.50 case of 12

The oak is not as strident in youth as in previous vintages. Probably because of the huge fruit mass, but maybe also they’ve wisely lightened up. Big, rich, solid, juicy, Rhonish. Another dark, deep, somber 05 to put away in the cellar. 91++/100. SUPPLIER’S CLEARANCE SPECIAL; LIST PRICE: $20.

@ Prehy. The richness of 06 fruit (lemon, peach, pineapple, papaya) kept at home by Chablis terroir, flint, and calcaire foundations, even a walnut suggestion./ Great acidity, especially for 06. Full body and vigor. Deep, lasting, and positively DRENCHED with terroir. A ‘petit’ Raveneau. Very popular with the group. 92+/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

         14.49 each; 169.95 case of 12

Bright, brisk, and northern. Apple and pear./ Totally upbeat and crisp in spite of 100% malo. Good future, but there’s not need to defer mealtime enjoyment right now. 90+/100.

         7.49 each; 87.95 case of 12

70% grenache, 20% syrah, 10% carignan. Oh, this is rich, sultry, deep, and smoky. Dense, compact, warm, and savory. Lush but controlled,/ Rich fruit on the palate too. Good acidity and peel extract. Dark and firm and tarry to start. Opens with airing to display plenty of cool-climate fruit and the size and meaty richness of Villages./ Yes, Villages rich and dense. The wine is substantial, well proportioned, and well framed. Better and longer lived than the 04. 91+/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

* 23. 04 VALREAS COTES DU RHONE VILLAGES, DOMAINE DU VAL DES ROIS
         15.99 each; 187.95 case of 12

Warm, savory black and red fruits, dusty earth. Fine combo of beauty, plumpness, grip, and extract./ Great race and fine red fruits. The inherent Burgundy style of Val des Rois’ Romain Bouchard, as well as the full Valreas race. Rich and variegated flavor range. Olive, sage, and flowers nuances. Fine acid-sweetness balance. Like the 04, very garrigue laden, with bergamot, brandied cherry, and Cavendish tobacco airs. Spicy, sweet, and powerful nature of 05 too./ Blackberry and briar. Cool and nicely balanced. Not too heady or tannic. This is lovely, classic Chateauneuf that’s not trying to be too big for its breeches. Inviting already but no doubt a long keeper too. The Wine of the Tasting on everyone’s score sheet. 93+/100.
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

Boy, is this an adventure!/ Burst of garrigue and flowers flavors. Everything magnified on the palate. Great range. Full berry and garrigue flavor complex. Fresh, but also powerful and gripping. * 42. 06 MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO, DRAGONI
         5.79 each; 67.95 case of 12

Started out rather sullen, dark, and secretive like many 06 Central Italy reds. Then we dipped the magic Clef du Vin in it (said to age a wine a year for every second it’s dipped), and, by golly, it started to open up (or was it just aeration?). Now it has very nice floral accents that project it beyond its price range./ Cocoa and warm plum flavors. Definitely ripe, and very giving. Don’t know if the tool helped or not. Tanzer 91 - ONE OF THE WINE WORLD’S MOST AMAZING VALUES: ‘Explosively perfumed scents of red berries, flowers and minerals, plus an exotic Asian spice quality. This shows a silky texture reminiscent of a high-end New World pinot noir, with deeply concentrated raspberry and cherry flavors brightened by zesty minerals and white pepper. Sappy, sweet and strikingly pure on the long, spice finish. Brighter than the outstanding 2005 and just as good.’

The initial vintage from the new Tchelistcheff Block, developed under the guidance of Chateau Ausone’s winemaker and vineyard manager, Pascal Delbeck. Rich, open, and powerful expression of 04 and Alexander Valley./ Ripe black cherry and blackberry. Nice, cool floral and cedar airs give complexity and lift. Lots of stuffing here. Very rangy, entertaining, and generous for the price. 91+/100.

Wow! Open, sweet, sexy oak potpourri of spices and ripe, sweet fruit to counter. Real power too./ Rich, large, sweet, powerful, expansive. Unlike many a merlot in its price range, nothing tame or herbal about it. Will compete with merlots three times the price. 91/100.

True, cool, fresh cherry and tea pinot aromas. Engaging. Cherries Jubilee suggestions come on after aeration./ Juicy and real pinot. Delicious as well as accurate. Certainly coastal. There’s a freshness and fruit purity to it, absence of heavy oak and alcohol influences. This makes it seem almost non-Californian. But there’s no Burgundian terroir here and no Oregon-New Zealand herbalness, so it kinda fills a niche of its own. I like that. 90/100.

Clearly, the folks at Windmill are on to something here, and if you are looking for a wonderfully reliable red that smacks of berries and smoked meats, and has the depth and beauty to stand up to most any dish, here it is.’

* 64. 06 CELLAR NO. 8 CALIFORNIA ZINFANDEL

Sweet, solid, dark, slightly roasted fruit expressive of its southern Mendocino-northern Sonoma origins. California appellation, but a wine of place, and that place is the Asti-Cloverdale area of the northern Alexander Valley, where the winery is located. Very nice baking spice and toast oak savors are a bonus./ Yes, pleasing toasty, sweet-spicy oak and warm-roasted, vigorous zinfandel character. More three dimensional than the 05. Food & Wine - CLASSIC: ‘In seeking out grapes from the fog- and breeze-cooled southern portion of the Napa Valley, Napa Cellars gets the benefit fo fruit that is ripe for the picking, but a touch lower in sugar (and bit higher in acid) than Chard grapes grown in warmer climes a dozen miles to the north. What this translates to in their mostly barrel-fermented 2006 Chardonnay is a near-kaleidoscopic array of aromas and flavors ranging from mouthwatering honeydew melons and fresh-cut pears to allspice, scraped vanilla beans and toasted coconut. Pair it with richer fish like swordfish and salmon, cream and butter sauces, and even a hot basket of fried chicken. Extra points if you join it with buttery corn-on-the-cob.’

Very distinctive white. $18.’

Wine Enthusiast 94: ‘Treana has enjoyed great success with this, which is one of the best Rhone-style white wines in California. The main reason is the source of the grapes. The vineyard, owned by the Wagners of Caymus, is stellar. The ‘06 is as rich and crisply acidic as ever, with fantastically complex, honeyed tropical fruit, apricot and floral flavors that taste like they have a touch of botrytis.’

Wow! Full, sexy oak incense and sandalwood. Great power. Gobs of ripe fruit; riper and more generous than the 06. And, like the 06, no earth, animal, herb, or funk, like some inexpensive carmeneres./ The palate is simply enveloped by oak spices and sweet fruit. This is carmenere with all its inherent abundance and none of its shortcomings. Well proportioned, well crafted. Great value. Wow! Well liked by the group. 91/100.

* 83. 07 MONTEVINA TERRA D’ORO AMADOR NEBBIOLO-SYRAH ROSE
         10.99 each; 129.50 case of 12

Dedicated to Italian varietals in its Sierra Foothills setting, Montevina experimented with nebbiolo as a red wine but with the same lackluster results that every other California winery experienced. So winemaker Jeff Myers crafted his nebbiolo fruit into rose and made a nice, fresh, light-bodied rendition for several years. In search of a fuller, more mealworthy rose, Myers added some syrah in 2007, and the results were so successful he elevated the wine to Terra d’Oro reserve status. Wow! This is a man-handler’s, meat-eater’s rose! Think BBQ. 92/100.

Impressive. Seems ‘99-like. A lot of pinot fruit here; seems redder even that the ‘96-dominant cuvee. Plenty enough grip and a very creamy, brioche-like bottle bouquet. Enormously appealing with heavy hors d’oeuvres. 93/100.

First vintaged Cuvee Edmond I’ve seen, and one of the best Edmonds yet. Solidly based on old-vines meunier fruit, this is a lovely and explicit representative of the rich, open style of the 2000 Champagne vintage. What I like about it especially is that it has more framework, more extract, and more grip than most 2000s. That contains the fruit abundance and supplies balance and ageworthiness. Oh, and there’s lots of doughy bottle bouquet in addition. 94+/100.
