44. 05 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO, CAPARZO
         31.99 each; 187.95 case of 6

Wine Spectator 92; Parker 92: ‘Surprisingly dark in profile. A sweet, Pinot-like bouquet leads to perfumed black cherries, spices, licorice and tobacco. This graceful Brunello offers gorgeous balance, with an expressive core of fruit that flows through to a long, refined close. The 2005 is one of the best versions of this wine I have tasted. In 2005 the estate did not make either their Riserva or their La Casa, and the addition of that fruit here undoubtedly contributes to the wine’s overall sense of harmony. The rest of the fruit was sourced from the Il Cassero and Caparzo vineyards. This is a very elegant Brunello. 2010-2020. $45.’

         4.69 each; 54.95 case of 12

There’s a nostril etching here like it has some SO2, but that’s not it. It’s acidity and extract, I’m sure. Stimulating. Full and round too./ Brisk, bright apple and melon. Well, you have two class varietals here playing in harmony. Flows nicely in the 09 style. Whoa! Is this a good value, or what?! Liked by the group. 90/100. A coupon will net you $5 off a 2-bottle purchase, so the wine’s almost free!

50. 08 VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO RONDOLINO, TERUZZI & PUTHOD
         13.99 each; 164.50 case of 12

Full. Expressive. The right stuff. Good richness and vitality. Apple, quince, stone. Brisk as well as full./ Yes, the 08 yin-yang of body and vigor. Flavorful. Dense and silky, with finely tuned acid and lacings of mineral and almond. One of the best vernaccias I’ve had in some time. Of course, this is one of the best sources. Well liked by the group. 91+/100.

IBERIA

51. 09 TXAKOLI DE GUETARIA, TXOMIN ETXANIZ
         17.99 each; 211.50 case of 12

Parker 90: ‘Txomin Etxaniz’s 2009 remains the prototype. With an enticing bouquet of sea salt, mineral, baking spices, spring flowers and green apple, on the palate it is crisp, vibrant, impeccably balanced, and totally refreshing. But beware, its low alcohol and hint of spritz makes it go down very easy; in an instant the bottle is empty and you’re ready for more. If you have some ability to delay gratification, note that it should be consumed over the next 12-18 months. $25.’
How Many bottles/singles:            How Many cases:

52. 05 RIOJA CRIANZA, BODEGAS LAN
         10.99 each; 129.50 case of 12

2006 on the original list. Supplier list typo; supplier still has 2005, which earned a Wine & Spirits 90/100 rating.. Our notes from last September:: Dark and sweet fruit, leather, and barrel-earned savor. This is coming along nicely. Yes, the gaminess is growing./ And on the palate too. Ripe fruit and game. Tannic still, but that’s beginning to melt away. Useful with food now. 91+/100.

101. 04 RIOJA RESERVA, BODEGAS LAN
         14.99 each; 176.50 case of 12

This was served in error at the 7/12 Wine Club tasting. Several in attendance enjoyed it and inquired about the price and availability, so I am adding it to the list. My notes from the January 2010 Wine Club tasting: Less wood-dominant than at a trade tasting last fall. Wonderful balance and quality of the vintage. Good acidity. Great ager. Harmonious. 92+/100.
ADDITIONAL WINE SERVED AT TATING IN ERROR -- BUT YUMMY!

53. 09 BAJO ARAGON GARNACHA VINYES VELLES ESENZIA, BODEGAS TEMPORE
         10.99 each; 129.50 case of 12

2008 on the original list. 2009 now. At Wine Club: What a great wrap-around label, panorama black-and-white photo of gnarled, tree-like old vines! And smell that old-vines essence of grenache! So pure and pretty a fruit style in 09, just like in Bordeaux. Fresh and cooked strawberry aromas lead the way, complicated by other berries and cherries./ Just delicious fruit flavor. Great, juicy acidity. Only a light brushing of tannins that add texture and do not interfere in the least with current enjoyment. Irresistible! 91/100.

55. 09 LA MANCHA VERDEJO PASO A PASO, BODEGAS VOLVER
         8.29 each; 97.50 case of 12

Parker 87 - VERY GOOD VALUE: ‘The first Verdejo produced from La Mancha. The advantage is that it can be grown less expensively there with the question being how it compares in quality to those produced in Rueda. The answer seems to be so far, so good. It displays an enticing nose of spring flowers, nutmeg, cinnamon, and pit fruits leading to a crisp, vibrant tasty wine for enjoying over the next 12-18 months.’

56. 08 YECLA MONASTRELL, CASTANO

The usual sweet and sassy style even in dark-tempered 08. 08 blackness for sure. Plenty of depth. Purple fruit of mourvedre with southern warmth and ripeness. Lots of green olive and hint of licorice./ Yes! A burst of ripe fruits and exotic spices. Great acidity too. Delicious balance. And value. Well liked by the group. 91+/100.

Roriz, barroca, franca, nacional. Wine Spectator 88 - Best Value. Nice to have Aveleda back in the market. Dark and solid. Not a bit too ripe; not as you might have expected from a Douro table wine of a Vintage Port year. Must come from the high country and back valleys./ Raspberry, cassis, spice. Pleasing warmth. Impressive value and one of those rare finds: a wine under $10 that is age-worthy. In fact, well under $10. 89+/100.

Firm, with the oak still a little dominant in my Taster glass. The Mondavi gracefulness is already apparent though. And the Napa class. Time in oak is beginning to produce complexity. This is fine-tuned. / Sweet and fruity 07 style with good oak measure. Mulberry and sandalwood. The proportions on the palate are right. Style and class here, for sure. Special./ Yes, the sweet fruit and light glycerol set against the astringent botanicals like laurel. It’s full, completely dry. Long lasting, cleansing finish. This is much more serious than the price would suggest. The botanicals mark it unique. 91/100.

Sweet and berry like fruit. Comes right at ya!/ Great acidity from the south. Never a problem for Italian winemakers no matter how warm the climate, it seems. Possibly, choice of varietals clinch it. Well balanced, with a smoothness from alcohol or glycerol. Great length. Some in the group thought this rather bold for a rose–more like a red wine. I was on the side that did not feel this way. Well liked by all regardless. I wish more fresh Italian roses would come our way. Italy’s as good at them as Med France and Spain. 92/100.

Sweet and sassy. Lots of oak spice, cigar box, and vanilla. In the beginning, this covers up the fruit. But the fruit will not be denied, breaking out into sweet merlot cherry goodness. The whole presentation is awfully naughty./ Yes, sweet, sexy cherry and oak spice flavors. Layers them on, lays them on thick. Wow! Long, sweet, spicy aftertaste. Best Fetzer merlot yet, and quite a contrast from the sullen nature of many a young 08 California red. Someone brought a briny pecorino cheese to the tasting. Salt calls for sweet in my book, and this wine worked well with it. 91/100.
