POTPOURRI
94. 16 DABLON ESTATE VERJUS 750 ml
         1.89 each; 5.50 case of 3

Common in Europe, this is the first Michigan-grown version I’ve seen. It’s pressed juice of unripened wine grapes culled from vines in late summer to ensure the remaining fruit will ripen fully. Pleasingly fresh, fruity, floral nose./ Totally tart. Suggestion of dried herbs. Thyme especially. Distinct salad applications. More wine-friendly than vinegar. A fine product.

95. WHITE ROCK BITTER LEMON six pack of 10 oz bottles
         5.19 each; 19.95 case of 4

Decades back, the area bottling plant stopped producing Schweppes Bitter Lemon, and I’ve been without one of my favorite mixers ever since. Bitter Lemon sold well in the East, but, it seems, it was not so popular in these parts. Nearly a year ago, White Rock Bitter Lemon popped up on one of my suppliers’ New Products lists. It took until last month for some to materialize in its inventory however. It’s made with cane sugar, and, recalling Schweppes of yore, White Rock’s has more intense flavor and bitter-sweet yin-yang. I’m enjoying it straight up as well as mixed with gin.

         10.99 each; 32.50 case of 3

90% cow’s milk, 10% sheep’s milk. The cheesemaker is on Pag island, where rough terrain supports only a special breed of sheep. The cow’s milk must come from the mainland. While buttery, toasted nut flavors dominate, the paste also reveals hints of aromatic herbs and salt of the grasses the animals have fed upon. Winner of a super gold at the 2014 World Cheese Awards and rated one of the world’s top 75 cheeses.

98. PONS PIQUILLO PIMIENTOS 8 oz. jar
         8.99 each; 26.50 case of 3

Piquillo (‘little beak’) is a chili pepper which grows around Lodosa in northern Spain and bears a Denominion Origen. I quote Wiki: ‘Typically, the peppers are hand picked during two harvests between September and December. They are roasted over embers, which gives them a distinct sweet, spicy flavour, more akin to bell peppers than chili peppers, despite their small size. They are then peeled and de-seeded by hand, before being packed into jars or tins for sale.’ Pons’ are roasted in wood-burning ovens. These were formerly marketed under the brand Mas Portell.

They produce fine-beaded black roe similar to the eggs of some sturgeon species. A mildly-salted caviar treat everyone can afford.
